We’re sharing all the best activities on Mackinac Island plus many of them are FREE! 

Start packing because there are many things to do on Mackinac Island and you won’t want to put it off another summer!

Although, fair warning, the island is busy during the summer months. If you can visit this unique place in the fall during the week it will be a bit quieter.

Grab a ferry in either St. Ignace (in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) or in Mackinaw City (in Michigan’s lower peninsula).  Both offers multiple ferries a day to and from the island.

You’ll want to plan, at a minimum, an entire day trip to the island, but if it’s possible plan at least a 2-day, 1-night visit. I recently stayed for 3-nights and wanted to stay longer.

The island life is definitely for me 😉

ALL THE FUN THINGS TO DO ON MACKINAC ISLAND

Visit Fort Mackinac

Even if you aren’t a history buff you are going to enjoy a visit to this very historical site.

Make a day of it at Fort Mackinac while you learn about life during the early days on the island and the history of the fur trade. Arrive early and ask if you can fire the 9 am canon, have lunch at the tearoom which offers excellent views of downtown Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac.

Take a Hike

The island has miles of excellent hiking trails.

The best part? Since you are surrounded by water it’s hard to get lost. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes.In the early summer look for Lady’s Slipper and Trillium in bloom.

Visit Anne’s Tablet

Walk past the back entrance to the Fort, take a right on the road that leads to the Fort administrative offices and then veer to the left onto the hiking trails.

You’ll pass the Somewhere In Time Gazebo, follow the path into the woods to the right.

Continue on and you’ll discover a historic marker with a great overlook of the Straits.

Anne’s Tablet is a tribute to author Constance Fenimore Woolson who spent her childhood summers on the island and became a well-known, early 19th-century author.

Her first published novel, Anne (which is currently FREE on Amazon Kindle), is based on the Island and was published in the late 1800’s.

The entire island is very photogenic.

From selfies to landscapes to action shots your island experience demands to be captured on film.

Since Mackinac Island is a bit of a throwback to another time it’s only fitting that you use a camera that is the same.

Visit the Somewhere In Time Movie Locations

It’s a cult classic and fans flock to the island every year to visit the movie locations and attend the Somewhere In Time Festival held at the Grand Hotel.

Located near the Fort Mackinac administrative offices is the gazebo from the movie. A great place to sit a spell.

Some FREE (fee for Grand Hotel entrance).

Enjoy One of the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours

This is a great way to see many of the islands popular sites as well as hear entertaining stories and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride.

You can pick up a carriage tour on Main Street as soon as you get off the ferry.

Go for a Bike Ride

Want to explore the island on your own time?

Bring your own bike or rent one on the island and spend the day pedaling around this roughly 4 square mile island.

By the way, Mackinac Island is very pet-friendly so bring fido with you while you explore the island!

Visit Fort Holmes

Fort Holmes is part of the Fort Mackinac Historic State Parks and is located on the highest point on the island. It has recently been restored and provides an excellent view of the island.

This is an island favorite. Arch Rock is lovely any time of day but at sunrise, it’s quiet and has a pretty golden glow.

Admiral Dave’s Arcade

Rainy day? No worries, head over to Mission Point Resort and introduce the kids to classic arcade games and play some video games.

A change machine is available in the arcade.

Find Sunset Rock

There is a trail behind the Inn at Stonecliffe that winds its way through the woods and eventually leads you to Sunset Rock.

From here you can see the mighty Mackinac Bridge and watch as the sun sets over the Straits.

Take Up Square Dancing

On Tuesdays during the summer head over to St. Anne’s church and get your do si do on as your swing your partner round and round on the church deck.

Wawashkamo Golf Course for a History Lesson

Wawashkamo is an interesting blend of history and today.

It is Michigans oldest, unchanged, private nine-hole golf course. It was founded in 1898 and that way you see it today is mostly how it was over a century ago.

This is also the land of the great 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island. This was once a farmer’s field where American soldiers attempted and failed to drive the British from their hill.

When you tee off at the first hole you are teeing off on historic ground.

FREE to view, a fee to play.

Paddle the Straits

Great Turtle Kayak Tours offers two locations and many tour options for getting out on the water to explore the Straits of Mackinac.

The first option is to take a tour from the mainland before heading to the island. Go the Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City and enjoy a paddle to the Fort and under the mighty Mackinac Bridge. That is definitely a bucket list item.

Once you are on the island join Great Turtle Kayak Tours for a paddle to famous Mackinac Island landmarks. SUP is also available.

TIP: Be sure to check out the crystal clear waters of the Straits!

Take a Stroll Around Sugar Loaf Rock

This 75-foot tall rock stands strong in the middle of the island. View it from afar to appreciate its beauty and then take a walk around it to appreciate its immense size.

Sample ALL the Fudge

There are approximately 13 fudge shops on Mackinac Island and they all offer free samples of fudge.

Watch the fudge makers twists and flip hot fudge on a marble slab while nibbling on their delightful creations.

This is great to do right before leaving the island so you can find your favorite flavors and take home a couple of tastes of the island for family and friends.

Fudge is the best selling souvenir on the island.  (Start and end at Ryba’s….just sayin’)

If fudge isn’t your thing there is no shortage of ice cream on the island.

Play Golf

There are three golf courses on the island. One at the Grand Hotel with a front and back 9, a historic 9-hole course at Wawashkamo, and an 18-hole putting course at Mission Point.

Discover New Artists 

The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, a part of the Mackinac State Historic Parks is located on Main St. at the east edge of Marquette Park and offers art that is centered around Mackinac Island.

The Art Museum also offers hands-on art activities for kids for a small fee. Contact them to sign up.

Watch Wings take Flight at the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House 

This 1800 sq ft tropical garden is filled with hundreds of live butterflies from four continents.

Watch them hatch from a chrysalis and take their first flight.

Go Window Shopping

There are a variety of shops along Main St. that offers everything from souvenirs to home decor to fashion. The Grand Hotel offers quaint stores both inside the Grand Hotel and on the street leading up to it.

Fly A Kite

Bring your kite and let it fly high.

The great lawn at Mission Point is a great kite flying location as is Marquette Park in front of Fort Mackinac.

Go to Church

The Little Stone Church was built of local fieldstones in 1904.

There are stained glass windows in the front of the church that depict the history of Mackinac Island. Stop and read the historical marker for more history when you visit.

Visit the Library

This library may have the best waterfront view on the entire island.

A small deck on the back of the library invites you to sit and enjoy a book while watching freighters and ferries pass by.

Be sure to check the used book sale section at the library to buy a book to take home or enjoy while you are there.

See Skull Cave

A small squat-ish style cave that was once believed to be the burial ground for Native Americans and was a hiding spot for a fleeing fur trader.

Today the cave is free of bones and visitors are asked to view the cave from behind the fence and not try to climb inside.

Enjoy A Concert In The Park

Every Thursday at 6:30 PM from June 27- August 22 in Marquette Park you can enjoy music in the great outdoors. No worries if it rains, the concert moves indoors to the Center for the Arts at Mission Point.

Take a Ghost Tour

The Haunts of Mackinac offers a look at the eery side of Mackinac Island with stories of days gone by. The walking tour is around downtown and is an easy pace for all fitness levels.

Cheer a Team at a Vintage Baseball Game

This annual event is held at the oldest continuously used baseball field in the state. Fort Mackinac Never Sweats will compete against Rochester Grangers at the game in July.

Stop and Read the Signs

Interpretive signs dot the bike trail around the island sharing the native history that makes this island such a special place to visit.

Take time during a walk or a bike ride to learn more about Mackinac Island.

Drive your own Horse & Carriage

Take the reins in hand and experience a horse and carriage ride around the island as you guide the horse.

This unique experience is a unique way to truly experience life on Mackinac Island.

Your horse and carriage will be much smaller than the one pictured above but if you are staying at the Grand Hotel this is your transportation…so pretty.

$110/hour for a two passenger carriage

Remember, 75% of the Island is Parkland so get out and Explore

Hike, bike, paddle, drive a horse and carriage.

Whichever mode of transportation you like just be sure to spend time exploring.

We took the Jet Express ferry from Sandusky to Put-in-Bay, a quick 40 minute ride with a short stop at Kelley’s Island to pick up and drop off passengers.

One of the best ways to get around either island is by golf carts, but those that spend a significant amount of time on either island know that golf carts come in all kinds of styles.

This is just a fun post to showcase some of the cool golf carts we spotted while visiting the island.

Golf Carts of Put-In-Bay

Growing up in Michigan I have been to Mackinaw Island numerous times. Mackinaw Island is known for being a car free island and transportation is by bike or, the main mode, horses.

Just as Mackinaw Island is known for its horses, Put-In-Bay is known for its golf carts.

And, yes, there are lots and lots of golf carts on Put-in-Bay.

 Instead of cars, golf carts line the streets of Put-In-Bay.

To be fair, most of the golf carts are just the plain, run of the mill, standard golf carts.
 

Now those standard carts do come in a variety of sizes. From carts that carry 4 passengers to ones that carry 8 or more people. 
 

 However, some residents either have luxury models or have taken the time to make their golf cart unique. I’m kind of a fan of this futurist looking white one.

 This takes beer cart to a fun new level.

Pretty sure this one might be able to go off road for a bit more fun.

Kind of looks like the limo of golf carts.
 

Even the shade covers for the carts add a bit of flair to them.

 There is even an awesome cart for the National Parks Service. YAY!!

When you visit Put-In-Bay, OH be sure to rent a golf cart. They are available by the hour or by the day.

We had a lot of fun driving around this gorgeous island in our golf cart.

It has been a few years since I had visited this region of the state and I loved going back.  The U.P. has an abundance of nature. Drive along Hwy 2 and you’ll follow the Lake Michigan shoreline for a lot of miles.

There are a number of places to pull off the side of the road so you can dip your toes in the lake.

Go to the northern part of the U.P. and drive along Lake Superior to hunt for agates and other pretty rocks.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a unique character all on its own.

Locals are called Yoopers and pasties and whitefish are the traditional foods.

Of all the places I have visited around the U.S. I’ve never found any place that compares to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Pet-Friendly Hotel on Mackinac Island

Dog Paddle

Here, that phrase does not refer to a swimming style. It means that when you go for a paddle you, of course, take the dog along.

Book the guided sunrise trip with Great Turtle Kayak Tours to glide in silence with just the wildlife along the later-busy ferry docks or the sunset trip to see the sun sink behind the Mackinac bridge.

Just note on your online registration form that you’ll be bringing the pooch (and his or her life jacket).

Is The Mackinac Island Ferry Pet Friendly

Dogs are free on ferries to the island if they ride on your lap, a kid’s fare if they need their own seat.

Just remember that the island’s leash law starts on the boat so there’s no heading overboard and continues on busy Main Street to avoid collisions with the horses.

“We get a lot of dogs that come up and spend the day with their owners to swim and hike, go around the island,” says Chris Shepler, Vice President of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry. “It’s very cool.”

A Trailer of their Own

Some dogs are basket-sized, and they’re good to lead the way when you rent a bike from one of the many island outfitters; for dogs who need to spread out a bit, rent a trailer to pull behind as you explore the many paved island trails.

Do Dogs Crave Fudge Too?

Some 10,000 pounds of Mackinac Island fudge is made daily during peak tourist season—a throwback to the days when Victorian vacationers got hooked on sweets, first maple syrup harvested by the island’s Native Americans, later the now-iconic fudge you’ll even find in treats for dogs.

Is Fort Mackinac Pet Friendly?

Your dog will be the best educated in obedience class after a trip through historic Fort Mackinac, where pets are welcome to linger with owners and where water bowls are liberally scattered throughout the grounds.

You need only worry if the pup is skittish around the cannon or rifle fire of the fort’s interpreters; if so, head for a walk to the more remote fort—Fort Holmes—at the island’s highest point.

It is a lot of fun to visit, Mackinac Island is one of the few remaining car-free zones in the United States and there are many activities that are indoor, outdoor and, yes, there are even free things to do.

Oh, and there is fudge….lots and lots of tasty fudge.

Insider Tips For Visiting Mackinac Island

• The island is VERY pet-friendly..yay! By the way, pets stay for FREE at Mission Point Resort.
• Bring a bike on the ferry and have free transportation around the island all day 🙂
• Grab a cheap breakfast at the Murray Hotel fudge shop, fresh donuts are only 60 cents each (prices may vary)
• The locals like to hang out at Horn’s Bar and Grill for tasty Mexican food and margaritas.

• The best time to visit the island is during the shoulder season (May and September/October). Be wary of the end of May/first part of June as hoards of school children descend on the island for year-end field trips.
• The island is basically one giant hill, be prepared to exercise those glutes walking both uphill and downhill. Good shoes are a must. My favorite are incredibly comfortable, but not very fashionable, Merrell shoes.

• Hidden behind the Inn at Stonecliffe is Sunset Point. A well-kept secret for great sunset viewing, the public is welcome.
• The library has a small deck on the back offering excellent views of the Straits. Enjoy the view while reading a book.

• There are no stop signs or stoplights on the island so be sure to look before crossing streets and entering intersections.

• Beyond fudge, the island has 2 very unique sweet treats. The Pecan Balls at the Tea Room and the Popcorn Balls at Stonecliff Hotel. I think it’s best to try them both to find your favorite.
• Mission Point Resort has the only map on the island that shows all of the Straits buoy systems in real time.
• Get your cup of joe at Lucky Bean Coffee on Market Street.

• Mission Point Resort offers wine tasting. I may have brought home a bottle of the Mission Point Cabernet Sauvignon.
• Enjoy breakfast at the Chuckwagon, I heard it’s THE place to have breakfast on the island.
• Have a nightcap at the Cupola Bar at the Grand Hotel which affords visitors a million dollar view while they sip a cocktail or champagne. On that note, the Grand Hotel does not charge a fee for entering in the evening.

• If you find a “taxi” driver you like you can request them for your next ride
• If you are planning to visit the Butterfly House, do it early in your trip as one admission gets you in for unlimited visits.

Kayak: With over tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams there is always a river nearby to go kayaking.

Fly a kite: With so many Great Lakes shoreline miles there is always a place to go fly a kite.

Swim in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes: Erie, Huron, Superior and Michigan all touch Michigan giving you the opportunity to swim in 4 of the 5 great lakes.

Micro breweries, wineries, and distilleries: There are over 100 wineries, over 100 breweries, and 20 distilleries. Both Southwest Michigan and the greater Traverse City region have a large number of brews, wines, and spirits.

Drive in movie: It’s a throwback to another era, but there are still a few drive-in movie theaters in the state. My favorite is the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor.

Play Ball: Summer is baseball season and there are games happening all across the state. If you prefer to watch instead of play there are great teams here. I prefer watching minor league baseball, it’s a lot more family friendly.

Minor league teams include Great Lake Loons, Lansing Lugnuts, and West Michigan Whitecaps. Of course, if you want to watch a major league team you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Detroit Tigers.

Putt-Putt: Michigan is full of championship golf courses, but for those of us who are more comfy on the putt-putt courses there are plenty to choose from. In my opinion, putt-putt is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful.

Camping: Tents, RV’s or camping cabins are all great ways to overnight in the great outdoors. I still do some tent camping, but I’m slowly converting to a cabin.

I appreciate the quick set up of cabins, basically just show up with bedding and enjoy time outdoors. My favorite places to camp are in the Upper Peninsula and Upper Lower Peninsula, but there are plenty of campsite across the entire state.

Picnic: Pack a basket and head to a local park to enjoy lunch or dinner outdoors. There is just something very relaxing about getting away from the hustle and bustle of home to enjoy eating outside.

Visit Paradise and Hell: It’s true, you can go to Hell or Paradise or both during your visit to Michigan.

Geocache: Go on a modern day treasure hunt with geocaching. Containers of all shapes and sizes are hidden in forests, parks, and urban areas just waiting for you to find them and take a treasure from inside.

Roast marshmallows over a campfire: We are lucky enough to be able to have a small campfire in our backyard and marshmallow roasting is a regular summer event.

Check fire laws for your area and always take safety precautions. If your backyard isn’t an option, look for a hotel that offers patio fires and s’more making. Two that come to mind are Boyne Mountain and Harbor Grand.

Pick Your Own Fruit: Cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and more are available to pick during the summer and fall.

My favorite site is PickYourOwn.org which lists the farms and what fruits and veggies are ripe for the picking and when.

Shop quaint downtowns: Some of the best shopping is found in quaint downtowns around the state. I, personally, enjoy shopping in Traverse City and Petoskey, but other great areas include St. Joseph, Royal Oak and Grand Rapids.

Visit Michigan Lighthouses: There are 129 lighthouses along the shores of Michigan. How many can you see this summer?

Lower Michigan

2o. Sand Rails: Ride the sand dunes in Silver Lake. Take a thrilling ride in a sand rail up and down the dunes along northern Michigan. This is the only place in Michigan that I know of where it is legal to drive on the sand dunes.

21 Dutch Village: In a setting filled with authentic Dutch architecture, flowering gardens, canals and windmills, and wooden shoes,  Dutch history and culture are brought to life. This theme park will spark the interest of children and adults alike. Plan on spending 2-3 hours here.

22 Musical Fountain: A synchronized display of water and lights in Grand Haven, Michigan located on Dewey Hill on the north shore of the Grand River. Shows run nightly Memorial Day through Labor Day. Free.

23 Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: A 158-acre botanical garden and sculpture park. It’s easy to spend the day exploring the grounds and indoor exhibits.

24. Greenfield Village: Entering Greenfield Village is like stepping into an 80-acre time machine. It takes you back to the sights, sounds, and sensations of America’s past. There are 83 authentic, historic structures, from Noah Webster’s home, where he wrote the first American dictionary, to Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratory, to the courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.

25 Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, oh my: Walkthrough a polar bears playground and watch them tumble and swim around you. Be sure to stop by and say hi to the zebras. Keep an eye out for the new baby foal that was born the first of the year. The zoo has plenty to offer to keep you busy all day.

26. Fox Theater: Opened in 1928 it has survived the Great Depression, wars and economic downturns, but this jewel in the heart of Detroit still stands. A magnificent theater with its gilded interior is a sight to behold.

27. Bronner’s: Located in Michigan’s Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth, it’s Christmas every day of the year at Bronner’s in Frankenmuth which is only closed 4 days out of the year.  While you are in Frankenmuth, make sure to check out Zehnder’s Splash Village for fun in the water!

28. Dow Gardens: Located in Midland the gardens offer 110 acres of walking paths and gardens. There are also a number of educational opportunities and special events.

Soo Locks Viewing Platform

You have to see the Soo Locks! You will surely admire this engineering wonder that links Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
