I was born and raised in Cadillac and while growing up here there was not much to do. You basically had like three options, go to the movies, bowling, or do an outdoor activity like swimming, hiking, taking out a four wheeler on the trails, fishing, skiing or snowboarding. You get the gist of it and a lot of people couldn’t afford the fancy outdoor toys including my family.

I spent a lot of time outdoors, hanging out with the neighbors and riding my bike. Thinking back on it, I now realize how few activities Cadillac had compared to the places I’ve lived since. It kind of makes me sad.

After a number of years away, I moved back last year and I’m rediscovering my hometown through fresh eyes and finding that there are so many things to do now compared to a decade ago.

Camping

Cadillac offers great places to camp with a tent or camper, there are even cabin rentals on the lake!

Right between the lakes you have Mitchell State Park that offers many sites as well as some cabins. The benefit of staying at this one is you’re right between two lakes and across the street from Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center. The center offers hiking trails and numerous events throughout the year. This summer you can take a fly fishing seminar in July. Be sure to check out the other numerous activities available this summer. Another benefit of staying at the state park is the accessibility to nearby restaurants, and most importantly, coffee. Also, downtown Cadillac is just on the other side of Lake Cadillac about 10 minutes drive away.

Another campground to check out on the lake is Hemlock Campground. I haven’t stayed at Hemlock, but I’m definitely curious to try it. It looks perfect for campers that like a bit more privacy.

Outdoor Activities

One thing that hasn’t really changed, but has significantly improved is all the outdoor activities you can find in Cadillac year round. During the summer months you’ll find:

Hiking

Fishing

Boating

ATV Trails

Kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding

Disc golfing

Golfing

The Cadillac Area ATV trails are ready to welcome you with updates way signs, 2 trailhead staging areas, and more than 100 miles of mapped scenic ride miles. Don’t have an ATV? No worries, there are a number of rental facilities to help you out.

For those that love biking, you’ll want to ride the 200+ miles of multi-terrain trails. There are trails for families, fat-tire biking, and road biking.

Our personal favorite outdoor activity is kayaking with camping coming in a close second. When I want to get out on the water I tend to drop our kayaks on the Big Manistee River. Local outfitters can fit you with a kayak, canoe, and even a float tube if that is more your style.

If you’re feeling artistic, head over to Up North Arts, where you can take classes on everything from watercolor painting to ukulele strumming. Last year, my mom and I took a Nature Watercolor Journaling class, and I highly recommend it.

The Wexford Conservation District and Lake City-Missaukee County Conservation District both offer affordable classes on outdoor and gardening topics, and while most are held in the fall, winter, and spring, I encourage you to bookmark them for future visits.

Head Out To The Farm

Growing up, I had cornfields, dairy farms, as well as berry and pumpkin patches. But over the years, things have changed, and now visiting a farm is an experience in itself. Here are a few spots to check out:

Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery – Play with baby goats, attend a class, and most importantly, buy some delicious goat cheese.

Double L Farms in Cadillac and Blueberry Hill Harrietta both offer U-Pick blueberries usually starting in mid-July.

3rd Day Farm you can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

Brinks Family Creamery a family dairy farm that creates premium milk and cheese products directly from the registered Holsteins. When you stop in be sure to get some ice cream.

A Little Lavender offers a roadside stand with lavender bundles, steam distilled hydrosol, lotion bars and more.

Cotton Creek Farms is an alpaca farm where you can visit with the alpacas and buy alpaca made goods.

Of course, if you’d like a one-stop shopping experience I highly recommend visiting the Cadillac Farmers Market to find the above products and so much more.

Explore the Live Music Scene

Since moving back I’ve learned there are a number of music venues now in town. I haven’t been to all of them, but they are on my list.

The Greenhouse at the Willow In addition to live music, they also host trivia and music bingo on Wednesday nights. Watch their facebook page for other events like wine tasting, silent disco dance parties, and more.

The Venue at the Truckstop: This is one of the larger venues in town and they host some decent sized events and concerts. From cover bands to magic shows and all kinds of entertainment you’ll want to look over the upcoming shows and buy tickets now as they tend to sell out.

Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion: The UpBeat Cadillac Summer Music Series returns at the Pavilion. Starts on 06/19/2025 and runs every Thu through 08/28/2025. Begins at 7:00pm.
Shopping and Eating

Cadillac’s charming downtown is a delightful mix of retail shops, restaurants, and coffee spots. Some of our favorites include:

Serendipity and The Bird House: Great for unique finds.

Chunky Bear Coffee: A cozy spot to sip a cup of coffee.

Wildflour Bakery: A perfect place to send a letter to your future self.

For when you’re feeling hungry, you can stop by Indian Spice, Clam Lake Beer Co., or Mi Mezcal Mexican for a delicious meal.

Gardening Stops You Should Visit This Summer

If you’re into gardening, Cadillac and the surrounding area are home to some great greenhouses and garden centers:

Christie’s Potting Shed: Located in Marion, Christie’s is a small town florist, greenhouse, and antique shop.

Walravens: A great blend of farmers market, butcher shop and greenhouse, located on Cadillac’s west side.

Sassafrass: Located in Lake City, Sassafrass has a beautifully curated gift shop, loads of outdoor decor and all the plants you’d ever want for your yard and garden.

Backyard Blossoms Greenhouse: I just discovered this one this year through a facebook post. Located in Tustin just a few miles from US 131 this Amish run greenhouse is simply adorable. Flowers, garden plants and indoor plants are all available as well as other gardening needs. It’s worth a visit just for the vibe. 19418 220th Ave, Tustin. They are open seasonally Monday-Saturday from 10a-6p. On your way to the greenhouse do yourself a favor and stop at the Yoder’s of Tustin store. Their bread and bakery items are top notch. Grab a sandwich if you are there around lunch time. You wont be disappointed. Note, Yoder’s is closed on Thursday and Sunday and only takes cash or check.

Located in the heart of downtown Woodstock, it offers diners a premier steakhouse experience complete with crafted cocktails, elegant dining and a spacious patio featuring a 20-foot stone fireplace.

Century House

Serving up some of the best steaks in the country along with the freshest fish available, chefs Michael Wutz and Joshua Coker have created a menu that celebrates the flavors of the meats that are finished off in the restaurant’s Mugnaini wood ovens. Housed in the landmark Hubbard House, originally built in 1894, this local favorite serves up fine casual cuisine in an atmosphere that pays homage to the historical roots of the beautiful property. From classics like Shrimp and Grits and Chicken Fried Chicken to interesting twists on old favorites such as Chatel Farms Short Rib Ragu and Parmesan Fonduta Fettucine, there’s no way you’re leaving hungry.

Save Room For Dessert

Pie Bar

Stop in at the award winning Pie Bar and treat yourself to a hand crafted sweet pie. With options like rustic peach crumble pie, brown sugar chess pie, apple streusel pie and s’mores pie, there’s no way you can go wrong.

Kilwins Chocolates, Fudge & Ice Cream

One of my favorites due to its Michigan roots, Kilwins offers a variety of products including Heritage Chocolates, hand-paddled fudge made in store, caramel apples, chocolate dipped treats, Kilwins Original Recipe Ice Cream and much more, choosing just one treat will be your biggest challenge.

Fun side note, if you ever find yourself in Petoskey, Michigan be sure to check out Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen and see how it all began.

Visiting Woodstock

Come for the dining and stay to experience so much more. Woodstock offers a variety of lodging options, shopping and more.

Once upon a time my favorite thing to do was read book after book. I used to consume books like they were my required oxygen and it wouldn’t be any problem to read 5-8 books a week.

Then, I quit my boring job and became self-employed. Time for reading quickly fell to the side as every minute of every waking hour was used to work and travel.

However, that is going to change this summer. I’m going to make sure to set time aside to enjoy reading and McLean and Eakin booksellers is going to help.

This small bookseller in Petoskey, MI is one of the top 5 booksellers in the United States according to Publishers Weekly.

Authors and readers alike flock to the store in Petoskey’s Gaslight Distict for their knowledgeable staff, warm atmosphere, and excellent author events.

While the store is small the offerings are huge with a large display of employee recommendation situated near the entrance and new releases nearby. The employee recommendations are the place to look though.

These books have been read, vetted and recommended and if they are displayed on the Staff Recommendations shelf you know it’s going to be a good read.

There are so many great reads available I’m not sure where to begin, but I do know the employees can help me narrow it down and find the right place to start.

If you are in northern Michigan this summer make sure you stop at McLean & Eakin for one of their upcoming author events and to browse the store and leave with a bag full of summer reads.

Details for author events can be found on the McLean and Eakin website. Some of the events are free and others have a minimal fee and require a reservation.

The event list is being added to as well so if you don’t see your favorite author check back in a week or two and see if someone new is on the calendar.

If you can’t make it to Petoskey for an event you can still benefit from all the knowledgeable employees.

Be sure to sign up for their e-newsletter (sign up is on the left side of their website) to stay up to date on all the new releases and to see what the employees recommend.

Yes, the employees here actually read the books and can recommend titles to you. I love that about this independent books store.

Best of all you can support this fantastic bookseller regardless of where you live through their online store !

Blandford Nature Center is a 264-acre natural preserve located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The center is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and offers a variety of educational programs and activities for people of all ages.

The history dates back to the early 1900s, when Mary Jane Dockeray, a local school teacher, began taking her students on field trips to explore the natural world.

She eventually acquired the land that would become the center, and began developing it as a place for people to learn about and appreciate nature.

(c)Blandford Nature Center

HOW TO HAVE FUN IN THE WOODS AT BLANDFORD NATURE CENTER

Today, the center offers a wide range of programs and activities for visitors.

The center’s trails are open year-round and provide opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography.

There are also several designated picnic areas, making Blandford a great place for a family outing or a peaceful afternoon in nature.

In addition to its outdoor offerings, there are several educational programs for both children and adults.

ADULT CLASSES

For adults, there are a range of classes and workshops on various nature-related topics.

Some of the classes include Bird Watching Basics, Introduction to Herbal Medicine, and Intro to Backyard Beekeeping.

These classes are taught by experts in their fields and provide an opportunity for adults to deepen their knowledge of the natural world.

(c)Blandford Nature Center

FOREST BATHING

One of my favorite classes offered for adults is Shinrin Yoku, also known as forest bathing.

This class is run by Katie Venechuk from In Your Element Wellness. This class involves immersing oneself in the natural environment and connecting with the forest through the senses.

During the Shinrin Yoku class, participants are led through a series of exercises designed to heighten their awareness of the natural world.

These exercises may include mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, and sensory experiences such as smelling the forest floor or feeling the texture of tree bark.

The class is based on the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, which has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including reducing stress and improving immune function.

You are encouraged to slow down and take in the natural environment around them, allowing you to experience the calming effects of nature.

(c)Blandford Nature Center

WILDLIFE REHABILITATION PROGRAM AT BLANDFORD NATURE CENTER

One unique feature of the center is its wildlife rehabilitation program.

The center provides medical care and rehabilitation services for injured or orphaned wildlife, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild once they are healthy and able to survive on their own.

Visitors can often see these animals up close and learn about their rehabilitation process.

(c)Blandford Nature Center

DEMONSTRATION GARDENS

Blandford Nature Center is also home to several demonstration gardens, including a butterfly garden, an herb garden, and a native plant garden.

These gardens provide a beautiful backdrop for learning about different types of plants and their role in the ecosystem

BLANDFORD NATURE CENTER VISITOR CENTER

The center’s main building, the Mary Jane Dockeray Visitor Center, is a LEED-certified building that was designed with sustainability in mind.

The building features a green roof, rain gardens, and solar panels, and serves as an example of how sustainable practices can be incorporated into everyday life.

Blandford is a great place to learn about and appreciate the natural world.

Camp: Some of the best camping in the state is found in the Upper Peninsula

Waterfalls: More than 300 waterfalls dot Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Some are visible from the roadside and others take a bit of a hike.

The falls range in height from 5′ to 48+’. Pack a lunch and extra water because you can easily spend an entire day visiting and viewing a handful of the falls.

Rockhounding for Agates: Rockhounds flock to the Lake Superior shoreline to hunt for these iron-stained banded stones.

If you are new to searching for agates I find it easiest to look in very shallow waters for the stones since the water helps the banding and colors shine through.

View Northern Lights, maybe.

THINGS TO DO IN MICHIGAN | STATEWIDE

Kayak: With over tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams there is always a river nearby to go kayaking.

Fly a kite: With so many Great Lakes shoreline miles there is always a place to go fly a kite.

Swim in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes: Erie, Huron, Superior and Michigan all touch Michigan giving you the opportunity to swim in 4 of the 5 great lakes.

Micro breweries, wineries, and distilleries: There are over 100 wineries, over 100 breweries, and 20 distilleries. Both Southwest Michigan and the greater Traverse City region have a large number of brews, wines, and spirits.

Drive in movie: It’s a throwback to another era, but there are still a few drive-in movie theaters in the state. My favorite is the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor.

Play Ball: Summer is baseball season and there are games happening all across the state. If you prefer to watch instead of play there are great teams here. I prefer watching minor league baseball, it’s a lot more family friendly.

Minor league teams include Great Lake Loons, Lansing Lugnuts, and West Michigan Whitecaps. Of course, if you want to watch a major league team you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Detroit Tigers.

Putt-Putt: Michigan is full of championship golf courses, but for those of us who are more comfy on the putt-putt courses there are plenty to choose from. In my opinion, putt-putt is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful.

Camping: Tents, RV’s or camping cabins are all great ways to overnight in the great outdoors. I still do some tent camping, but I’m slowly converting to a cabin.

I appreciate the quick set up of cabins, basically just show up with bedding and enjoy time outdoors. My favorite places to camp are in the Upper Peninsula and Upper Lower Peninsula, but there are plenty of campsite across the entire state.

Picnic: Pack a basket and head to a local park to enjoy lunch or dinner outdoors. There is just something very relaxing about getting away from the hustle and bustle of home to enjoy eating outside.

Visit Paradise and Hell: It’s true, you can go to Hell or Paradise or both during your visit to Michigan.

Geocache: Go on a modern day treasure hunt with geocaching. Containers of all shapes and sizes are hidden in forests, parks, and urban areas just waiting for you to find them and take a treasure from inside.

More information at geocaching.com

Roast marshmallows over a campfire: We are lucky enough to be able to have a small campfire in our backyard and marshmallow roasting is a regular summer event.

Check fire laws for your area and always take safety precautions. If your backyard isn’t an option, look for a hotel that offers patio fires and s’more making. Two that come to mind are Boyne Mountain and Harbor Grand.

Pick Your Own Fruit: Cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and more are available to pick during the summer and fall.

My favorite site is PickYourOwn.org which lists the farms and what fruits and veggies are ripe for the picking and when.

Shop quaint downtowns: Some of the best shopping is found in quaint downtowns around the state. I, personally, enjoy shopping in Traverse City and Petoskey, but other great areas include St. Joseph, Royal Oak and Grand Rapids.

50 Things You’ll Want To Do This Summer In Michigan

MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA

1. Visit Mackinac Island: Located between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula Mackinac Island is a throwback to another era. This car-free island is home to many festivals, ghost stories, fudge, horses, gorgeous scenery and, of course, the Grand Hotel. Plan at least a 2-day visit and spend the night on the island. Shepler’s Ferry will boat you from the mainland to the Island and back.

2. Climb Castle Rock: One thing that Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has in spades is kitschy attractions. One of our favorites is to climb the rock near St. Ignace.

3. Soo Locks: View the locks in action as they allow freighters to pass between Lake Superior and lower Great Lakes. brand-new observation platform situated at the Lock’s edge, enjoy an up-close-and-personal glimpse of life aboard freshwater and ocean-going freighters

4. Tahquamenon Falls: Breathtaking waterfalls in the middle of the wilderness. Visit both the upper and lower falls, located 4 miles apart and connected by a hiking trail. Parking areas are also available at both areas if you prefer to drive. The Upper Falls has an impressive 50,000 gallons of water per second spilling over the falls.

5. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Located on the shores of Lake Superior near Munising, MI the Pictured Rocks area offers scenic beauty, hiking, and waterfalls.

6. Marquette: Surfing, whitefish, cliff jumping and more wait for you. Be sure to click the link to read the other crazy reasons to visit Marquette this summer.

7. Porcupine Mountains: Some of the most scenic natural beauty in the state. Miles of beaches, 100’s of waterfalls, and home to bears, wolves, moose and deer.

8. Palms Books State Park: Home to the one-of-a-kind attraction, Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s largest freshwater spring. Board the hand powered raft and pull yourself across the spring and enjoy views beneath the crystal clear water.

The resort was featured on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters season 7, episode 6 and is worth a visit.

11. Rockhounding for Agates: Rockhounds flock to the Lake Superior shoreline to hunt for these iron-stained banded stones. If you are new to searching for agates I find it easiest to look in very shallow waters for the stones since the water helps the banding and colors shine through.

STATEWIDE

36. Kayak: With over tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams there is always a river nearby to go kayaking.

37. Fly a kite: With so many Great Lakes shoreline miles there is always a place to go fly a kite.

38. Swim in 4 of the 5 great lakes: Erie, Huron, Superior, and Michigan all touch Michigan giving you the opportunity to swim in 4 of the 5 great lakes.

39. Microbreweries, wineries, and distilleries: There are over 100 wineries, over 100 breweries, and 20 distilleries. Both Southwest Michigan and the greater Traverse City region have a large number of brews, wines, and spirits.

40. Drive-in movie: It’s a throwback to another era, but there are still a few drive-in movie theaters in the state. My favorite is the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor.

42. Putt-Putt: Michigan is full of championship golf courses, but for those of us who are comfier on the putt-putt courses there are plenty to choose from. In my opinion, putt-putt is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful.

43. Camping: Tents, RV’s or camping cabins are all great ways to overnight in the great outdoors. I still do some tent camping, but I’m slowly converting to a cabin. I appreciate the quick set up of cabins, basically, just show up with bedding and enjoy time outdoors. My favorite places to camp are in the Upper Peninsula and Upper Lower Peninsula, but there is plenty of campsite across the entire state.

44. Picnic: Pack a basket and head to a local park to enjoy lunch or dinner outdoors. There is just something very relaxing about getting away from the hustle and bustle of home to enjoy eating outside.

45. Visit Paradise and Hell: It’s true, you can go to Hell or Paradise or both during your visit to Michigan.

46. Geocache: Go on a modern day treasure hunt with geocaching. Containers of all shapes and sizes are hidden in the forest, parks, and urban areas just waiting for you to find them and take a treasure from inside. More information at geocaching.com

48. Pick Your Own Fruit: Cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and more are available to pick during the summer and fall. My favorite site is PickYourOwn.org which lists the farms and what fruits and veggies are ripe for the picking and when.

49. Shop quaint downtowns: Some of the best shopping is found in quaint downtowns around the state. I, personally, enjoy shopping in Traverse City and Petoskey, but other great areas include St. Joseph, Royal Oak and Grand Rapids.

50. Visit Michigan Lighthouses: There are 129 lighthouses along the shores of Michigan. How many can you see this summer?

WHY PETOSKEY?

This resort community, located on the shores of Little Traverse Bay, has an air of relaxed, casual fun that invites visitors to enjoy all that Petoskey has to offer.

This is the land of Hemingway’s youth and Petoskey stone hunts, where the most important thing you have to do is take a stroll along the waterfront or go window shopping in the Gaslight District.

The way of life here is a bit slower and more relaxed and you can’t help but fall in love with this little piece of paradise in northern Michigan.

The Delights of Morel Mushrooms

You can’t visit a place without discovering the taste of place and I had the opportunity to do exactly that when I attended the Annual Morel Mushroom Festival in Boyne City.

This annual event is held every May to celebrate the abundance of wild morels found in the surrounding woods.

Of course, a wild morel mushroom dinner is the perfect way to be introduced to this delicious food.

Chefs created a variety of morel based foods for us to try and they were all delicious, but my favorite was the mushroom soup.

After trying this delectable offerings I now know why people get so excited about morel mushroom season.

Petoskey Stone Hunting

Getting outside and hunting for Petoskey stones is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Even though I’m a lifelong resident of Michigan I’ve never been very good at finding them.

Lucky for me Nikki from the Chamber of Commerce stopped by the Petoskey State Park to give me a lesson in finding these local stones.

She is a pro at finding them and spotted many during our visit.

Sadly, even with her excellent guidance I was still unable to find a stone, however she was generous and sent me home with some of her finds.

She was even brave enough to shed her shoes and wade in the icy cold water to gather stones she spotted.

NIKKI’S PETOSKEY STONE HUNTING TIPS

1. Have a cup of water or another water source nearby {hint, the Lake works really well}

2. Look for stones that have dark dots on a light background or light spots on a dark background.

3. Dip the stone in water. The spots should be easily visible on the stone (see image above).

Petoskey’s Gaslight District

Window shopping through the boutique stores of the Gaslight District is an opportunity to find fun and unique gifts for friends and family back home.

Grandpa Shorter’s offers a plethora of souvenirs and the bear that stand guard out front makes a great photo opp. Everything from t-shirts to these fun hanging displays. You are sure to find something for yourself and anyone else on your list.

At McLean and Eakin, one of the top 5 bookstores in the United States, you’ll find a beach read or three. I love browsing the Staff Recommends shelf and finding new authors and books to read. I wrote more about McLean and Eakin here.

Symons General Store offers gourmet foods, a deli and candy by the pound. I found some great fig jam to use on my goat cheese and fig bites. You can also pick up a fifth of whiskey from Traverse City Whiskey Co., which I highly recommend.

I’m not much of a shopper, but there is something about the unique stores in Petoskey’s Gaslight District that just pulls me in.

Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery

One of the most unique wineries in Michigan can be found just outside of downtown Petoskey.

This is the only winery in the entire United States that makes Maple wine and it is so very good!

Each year Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery taps 100s of Maple trees to make maple syrup and their specialty maple wine.

A small boutique winery, the Maple Gold is my favorite, but you’ll want to try all their varieties to find yours.

Kilwins Chocolates

Stop by Kilwins of Petoskey and try their hand-crafted fudge and home made ice cream.

Here you can find displays full of chocolate candies, watch fudge being made (and maybe have a taste of two) and indulge in a cool treat.

Hemmingway in Petoskey

During summer weekends the city park is always bustling with activities.

From festivals and concerts to movies in the park and more. The park is located right downtown and an easy stroll from area restaurants and shopping.

Hemingway fans will be thrilled to learn that the author spent a great deal of his youth in the area and had a cottage in Walloon Lake. Plaques mark Hemingway spots and a self-guided tour map is available through the Petoskey CVB or by clicking this link.

WHERE TO STAY IN PETOSKEY

Of course, a day in Petoskey isn’t nearly enough so you’ll need a place to stay.

The Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa at Boyne Mountain Resort is a great spot. All the resort amenities you could possibly want and a few you probably haven’t thought of.

Enjoy s’mores by the campfire, zip line, golf, take a chair lift for a scenic overlook and so much more.

If traveling with small children book a suite completely with an upper and lower level and an adorable castle area for the kids to sleep in.

WHERE TO EAT IN PETOSKEY

There are many great places to eat in the area.

My favorites include Barrel Back in Walloon Lake, Cafe Sante in Boyne City, City Park Grille and Palette Bistro in downtown Petoskey, and Stafford’s Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs.

Are you ready to plan your escape to nature and fun this summer in Petoskey?

A two lane road through northern Michigan led me to Petoskey and the lovely Stafford’s Bay View Inn. Sometimes the best off the beaten path road trips lead you to the most beautiful places.

Located on the shore of Little Traverse Bay it provides lovely views of the bay.

Arriving at Stafford’s it’s impossible not to relax and unwind. It was exact invite I needed after three weeks of non-stop travel.

Arriving at the Inn we were greeted by a lovely employee who checked us in and filled us in on the details of the hotel.

We made our way up a flight of stairs to the second level and quickly found our room, the Aster Suite with Porch.

Facing the bay and complete with fireplace and two-person whirlpool tub in was a nice indulgence for a weekend getaway.

Settling in our room the first thing I do is grab the info packet to read about the history of the Inn.

Built in 1886 it was a simple 16 rooms boarding house located one block from the train station.

Over the years additions were made to add more rooms and, of course, electricity and indoor plumbing were added.

In 1961 Stafford Smith became the youngest hotel operator in west Michigan when he purchased the property at age 22.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was 22 so I’m incredibly impressed and grateful that Stafford had a vision to continue to offer unparalleled hospitality services to visitors.

He not only kept Stafford’s Bay View Inn operating since 1961 he also has Stafford’s Perry Hotel and a number of restaurants in the area.

The second floor of the Inn offers a wonderful library and welcoming meeting area for visiting with new found friends. You’ll also find water, coffee & tea in the library.

Pour a cup of tea, grab a book and relax a few hours. Of course, if you are staying in the Aster Suite with a porch I highly recommend sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful view.

After a very restful night we enjoyed a lovely breakfast prepared by Chef Richard who was been creating delicious foods for guests at the Inn for 45 years.

We started with sticky rolls, no hardship there. The Inn has been serving these up for many years and they are a guest favorite for completely understandable reasons.

After enjoying a very delicious breakfast that came complete with a beautiful view we headed back to our room to laze around and let our food settle.

I hope you have the opportunity to stay at Stafford’s Bay View Inn when you visit Petoskey. You can find more information or book at stay here.

Petoskey is Michigan at it’s finest and you won’t be disappointed with a visit to this quaint northern Michigan town. Located four hours NW of Detroit and a short 35 miles from the famous Mackinac Bridge, on the shores of little traverse bay, Petoskey, MI is the perfect destination for your summer adventure. This is “Up North” at it’s best, but you’re still in the lower peninsula making it an easier trek from home.

This is the land of Hemingway’s youth and Petoskey stone hunts, where the most important thing you have to do is take a stroll along the waterfront or go window shopping in the Historic Gaslight District. The way of life here is a bit slower and more relaxed and you can’t help but fall in love with this little piece of paradise in northern Michigan.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN PETOSKEY, MI

Visit Petoskey’s Gaslight District

Find unique treasures in the Gaslight District. Everything from fashion to home to gourmet foods can be browsed and purchased in this fun downtown shopping district.

Hunt for Petoskey Stones

After you are done shopping head outside and hunt for Petoskey stones at a local beach area. Petoskey state park beach is a great location for this activity, but the downtown city park may also share a few stones.

Honestly, we find it’s easier to look for them along the shoreline. The water bring out the unique pattern you find on Petoskey stone. I always looks for a “turtle” design which isn’t as defined if the stone is dry.

Head To The Farm

Pond HIll Farm is a favorite spot for outdoor activities as well as wine, beer, and cider tastings. During the summer explore the vineyards and greenhouses, there is also cornhole and human foosball. During the fall the farm is filled with pumpkins, grape harvests and family fun. The fun doesn’t stop once the snow flies there is a free sled hill with tubes available to use. Cross-country skiing, fat tire biking or snowshoeing through groomed trails. Of course, there is hot cocoa to warm you back up after the winter fun is done.

Walk in Hemingway’s Footsteps

Ernest Hemingway fans will be thrilled to learn that the author spent a great deal of his youth in the area and had a cottage in Walloon Lake. Plaques mark Hemingway spots and a self-guided tour map is available through the Petoskey CVB.

Stop at McLean and Eakin

At McLean and Eakin, one of the top 5 bookstores in the United States, you’ll find a beach read or three. I love browsing the Staff Recommends shelf and finding new authors and books to read. I wrote more about McLean and Eakin here.

Chautauqua Community Self-Guided Tour

Take a self-guided tour of the historic Bay View Association, a Chautauqua community, is on the National Historic Register. Stroll around the neighborhood and learn more about this historic destination.

Pick Lavender

Lavender Hill Farm is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to pick lavender and enjoy the lavender fields. This is the largest lavender farm in Michigan, we are home to 30 varieties of lavender, Italian honeybees, and a restored century old barn where live music performances, weddings, lunches, and private events are held.

(c)TravelInspiredLiving

Visit Oldest Catholic Church

Stop by one of the few remaining Indian Missions in the state. St. Francis Solanus is the oldest and first Catholic church in Petoskey. Travel Inspired Living has a great post about the church here.

See One-Of-A-Kind Mushroom Homes

For unique architecture and history head over to Charlevoix, a short jaunt away, and take a self-guided tour of the Early Young Homes (aka Mushroom Homes and/or Hobbit Houses). These unique dwellings are definitely a one of a kind addition to the northern Michigan landscape.

More Outdoor Activities

During the winter months there is cross-country skiing and nearby ski resorts, but the summer season really offers some of my favorite things. From finding the perfect place for a picnic at bayfront park to taking a stroll from the historic gaslight district through the pedestrian tunnel and over to little traverse wheelway, both a foot and bike path, for a stroll along the bay.

Stargaze

In the evening you can head to the International Dark Sky Park near Mackinaw City. This is one of the few designated International Dark Sky Park in the state and offers incredible views of the night sky.

Live Entertainment

Additionally, there is always live entertainment happening in the downtowns of Harbor Springs (Street Musique on Thursdays), Petoskey (Petoskey Rocks on Fridays) and Boyne City (Stroll the Streets on Friday) throughout the summer. Local bars often offer live music as well.

Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery

Here you’ll find the only winery in the entire United States that makes Maple wine. Each year Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery taps 100s of Maple trees to make maple syrup and their specialty maple wine.

Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen

Stop by Kilwins of Petoskey and try their hand-crafted fudge and homemade ice cream.

For Lunch and Dinner

There are many local restaurants to eat in the area. My favorites include Barrel Back in Walloon Lake, Cafe Sante in Boyne City, City Park Grille and Palette Bistro in downtown Petoskey, and Stafford’s Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs. Fun fact, if you are here during the season for morel mushrooms many of the local restaurants will have morels as part of their menu.
