1. Airboats & Alligators Airboat Tour

If you’ve never been out on an airboat now is your chance. These Lake Charles swamp tours complete with airboats and alligators are so much fun. Skim across the water as you look for alligators and learn about life in the bayou.

2. Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway

Here at Just Short of Crazy we LOVE a good wildlife refuge hike and the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway does not disappoint. An easy 1.5 mile loop through marsh wetlands that includes an observation tower overlooking the refuge.

The refuge includes informational kiosks, covered benches, water and most importantly, a bathroom.  The walkway is ADA friendly and is open from sunrise to sunset.

3. Seafood Sensation Trail

You can’t visit Lake Charles and not try the seafood and this seafood sensation trail let’s you try the best of the best. Everything from fish to oysters to shrimp and crabs make their way into local dishes.  Follow the trail and savor the seafood.

4. Boudin Trail

Prior to my visit to Louisiana I had never heard of Boudin. For those who are curious Boudin is made of varying amounts of pork meat, liver, rice, onions, parsley and dry seasonings like salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic powder. It is THE snack food of southwest Louisiana. I tried Boudin as both a link sausage and as a Boudin ball. This is definitely a culinary dish that is a must-try when you are in Louisiana.

5. Mardi Gras Museum

See Mardi Gras costumes up close and learn the history and traditions of this Louisiana festival. And if you happen to be in town at the right time of year, here’s a complete guide to Mardi Gras in Lake Charles.

Located in historic city hall the 1911 Historic Arts and Cultural Center showcases traveling exhibitions from around the world, as well as regional and local artists. There are three floors of exhibit space, a clock tower and gorgeous courtyard. A definite must when you visit and won’t cost anything but your time as admission is free.

Spend a Day at the Beach

26 miles of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico offers sun, surf and shelling fun.

Peruse Prien Lake Park

Overlooking Indian Bay, the park is located on the east side of Prien Lake. Here you can enjoy an idyllic setting complete with trees, grass, flowers, fountains, and streams. Enjoy a scenic view of the lake and the I-210 bridge. It is also the perfect location to have a picnic, take a stroll or watch the sunset.

Important to note: the nearby Prien Lake Mall has some of the best shopping in Lake Charles

Tour and Taste at the Bayou Rum Distillery

The folks at Bayou Rum know exactly what they are doing when it comes to making rum. The Satsuma Rum is so very good!! Mix some with a little Blueberry Lemonade and it’s sunshine in a glass.

The people in Lake Charles have perfected the art of having fun. Next time you visit Lake Charles, be sure to stop by one of their festivals. The area hosts more than 75 events and festivals each year. Everything from culinary events to one heck of a Mardi Gras event (2nd largest in Louisiana).

Stroll or Bike the Creole Nature Trail

This is one of the best places to hit the road and explore some of the best nature trails in Louisiana. Spot alligators and numerous bird species, go sea shelling or crabbing. The Creole Nature Trail is well worth exploring!

Play at Millennium Park

Located on the lakefront the park is complete with splash pad (so important in the summer), swings and play sets. There is also plenty of room to run and a walking path, restrooms and picnic area to make a complete day.

Take a Carriage Ride Through the Charpentier Historic District

Seriously, does it get any more romantic than a carriage ride?  Without hesitation this is one of my favorite things to do in Lake Charles for couples. The Charpentier Historic District in listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The district includes more than 40 blocks of turn-of-the-century Carpenter-style buildings. The tour is only available during the day so that you can best see the architecture and gorgeous gardens. It’s a must tour if you are visiting with the one you love.

Get a Couples Massage at the Spa du Lac

Y’all probably know that going to the spa is one of my favorite things. The Spa du Lac is a blissful experience and one worth adding to the memory books.  Covering 8,700 square feet with facial, massage and body treatment rooms, seperate men’s and women’s locker rooms, saunas, whirlpools and more.  After visiting the spa be sure to indulge in a dip in the pool or take a float on the lazy river.

What is Lake Charles Louisiana known for?

Lake Charles is the 5th largest city in the great state of Louisiana. Conveniently situated on Lake Charles, Prien Lake, and the Calcasieu River. And, honestly, not that far from the Gulf of Mexico, only about 30 miles!

Home to the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the state. It is also the epicenter for major petrochemical refining, has a massive tourism industry due to its location is SW Lousiana, and is the education center for this corner of the state.  Once you’re in Lake Charles New Orleans and Houston are a day visit away.

Use your street smarts, kids, and you’ll be fine. Like any other city, petty crimes exist, but if you’re ok visiting New York City, Miami, Houston, or LA you’re good to go to Lake Charles.

When I travel I enjoy visiting different distilleries around the United States and on a trip to Lake Charles, Louisiana I was able to visit Bayou Rum Distillery and it was here that I was able to find a very tasty silver rum to make this amazing ginger lime martini recipe.

Ginger Lime Martini Recipe

This is such a fun twist on a classic martini.  I love this recipe and love how easy it is to make.  If you like cranberry and lime, you’ll absolutely adore this different drink recipe! It’s perfect for cocktail parties around the holidays!

Ginger Lime Martini Ingredients

2 oz Bayou Silver Rum2 oz Califia Ginger Limeade
1 oz Cranberry simple syrup (recipe below)
One fresh squeezed Lime

Ginger Lime Martini Directions

Combine all ingredients into a martini shaker add ice and shake for about 30 seconds, then pour into sugar rimmed Martini glasses.

Cranberry Simple Syrup

In a small saucepan combine 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup sugar and bring to a boil and allowing sugar to dissolve completely.

Once the sugar has dissolved turn heat down to a medium simmer and add 1/2 cup of cranberries, continue to simmer for 10 minutes to allow the cranberries to flavors the syrup.  

Cranberries will most likely break apart during this process.  

Remove from heat and allow to cool.  

Once the syrup has cooled use a fine strainer to remove cranberry pieces from your syrup.

How to rim your glasses in sugar or salt

Rimming your glasses adds a nice touch to any cocktail.  This can be done relatively easily by either purchasing a rimming dish from amazon for $8 or using a plate.

 If you choose to use a plate make sure that you have it wide enough in diameter to dip your glass.  For me, I prefer to use the rimming dish as it makes life easy.  

Once you have either your rimming dish or plate turn your glass upside down and dip the rim your glass into a citrus juice. Then dip in your sugar or salt.  

There are two schools of thought when dipping your glass one is to just dip in the rim and the other is to dip and twist your glass. 

It works both ways so I say test it out and choose which you like best.

It offers a little local flavor and produces some of the best rum in the region.

Their rum is crafted the Louisiana way in copper pots using 100% natural unrefined Louisiana cane sugar and molasses.

Touring the distillery I could tell that they take pride in their product and knows how to do rum right.

The tour starts with a quick video in the viewing room and then you’ll have a chance to tour the distillery.

There were quite a few barrels of rum aging.

Some of the rum is aged for 18 months, but most are bottled within 5 to 6 weeks.

During the tour, you’ll have the chance to see how the rum is aging in the barrel and maybe give it a little sniff test or taste.

Be sure to check out this fantastic painting on the wall during your visit.

They offer a varieties of rum including: Silver, Spiced, and Satsuma.

The Satsuma recipe is created using Satsuma fruit and is, hands down, my favorite of the three rums.

After the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to taste each of the rums.

The staff and owners are excited to share their product with visitors and happily pour you samples while sharing stories of life in the bayou.

During my visit, they created a few different cocktails for us to try and I’m sharing my favorite recipes with you.

The cocktail recipes are simple and only require a few ingredients.

Both of the recipes I’m sharing are Satsuma cocktails. 

SIGNATURE BAYOU RUM COCKTAIL RECIPE

1-8ounce glass of Simply Lemonade
1 shot Bayou Silver Rum
1-2 shots of Bayou Satsuma Rum

Directions:

Pour the lemonade in a cup, add the Bayou Silver Rum.

Mix and then slowly add the Bayou Satsuma Rum to the top.

The satsuma will stay towards the top of the drink creating a pretty cocktail to serve to your guests.

SATSUMA BLUEBERRY LEMONADE COCKTAIL RECIPE

8 ounces of Simply Blueberry Lemonade
1-2 shots of Bayou Satsuma Rum

Directions:

Fill glass with ice.

Add Lemonade.

Add the Rum.

Stir and Enjoy.

Cathedral of St John the Evangelist – 515 Cathedral St, Lafayette, LA 70501

I’m a sucker for beautiful churches and the Cathedral of St John does not disappoint.

Even if you don’t have time to tour the interior the outside is stunning and is listed on the National Register of Historic Properties.

There is a cathedral cemetery which dates back to the 1820’s.

The giant oak tree to the right of the cathedral is said to be one of the largest Live Oak trees in the United States and is estimated to be 500 years old.

Guided tours every Friday, from 11am until 2pm; and the 4th Saturday of the month, from noon until 2pm. Free.

World Famous Tabasco Sauce Plant Tour – 32 Wisteria Rd, Avery Island

Most everyone loves Tabasco Sauce, but did you know it’s made in Louisiana, right next to Lafayette?

Head over to Avery Island and walk through the Tabasco Sauce Visitors Center for a first-hand look at how all that sauce is made.

In addition to the tour be sure to buy all your souvenirs at the gift shop.

Rip Van Winkle Gardens – 5505 Rip Van Winkle Rd New Iberia

The Joseph Jefferson mansion, the author of Rip Van Winkle, was built in 1870 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tour of the gardens and mansion is well worth the price of admission.

The house is beautiful, but the stories about Mr. Jefferson are the best part of the tour.

Atchafalaya Basin Swamp Boat Tour – 1337 Henderson Levee Rd, Henderson

Take a tour through the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin while looking for wildlife and learning about the history of the area.

During your tour with McGee’s Landing enjoy authentic Cajun cuisine, relax and enjoy live music in the bar, or stay overnight in a basin cabin.

Vermilionville Living History Museum – 300 Fisher Rd, Lafayette

A living history museum about the Acadian, Native American, and Creole people from 1765 to 1890.

The museum is on the banks of the Bayou with 19 attractions, including seven restored homes with local artisans that provide demonstrations of crafts.

Stop into the different houses to listen to music and see how early settlers lived in the bayou.

Blue Moon Saloon – 215 East Convent Street, Lafayette

Blue Moon Saloon offers nightly entertainment most Wednesday-Saturday nights.

There isn’t just local, small town acts either. The Saloon brings in Grammy nominated groups (Bonsoir Catin) and non-Cajun bands like Dick Dale (American Surf Rock Guitarist) and T-Birds and the Breaks (Funk) to name a few.

Seriously, this may just be the perfect vacation destination for those looking for a bit of an escape from the everyday. My 2-night visit was way too short and I find myself making plans to return this fall.

Usually, I try to gather all my story ideas during a two-night stay and then write as much as I can from that experience.

There are simply too many places to go and share about to usually return to a destination regardless of how much I love it.

However, there have been exceptions over the years; Lake Charles, LA, Hatteras Island, NC, and northern Georgia come to mind.

Now I’m adding Abingdon, VA to that shortlist.

There is simply too many one-of-a-kind experiences to not return and give them a try.

Our first visit was in December and while that is a great time to visit it’s not really conducive to playing outside.

I want to go back during the summer so we can check as many of these epic adventures off our list as possible.

Seriously, there is everything here: culture, outdoor fun, music, art, and food.

Pull out that calendar and find some dates because you are going to want to check these adventures off the list.

Here’s 8 Epic Adventures To Have In Abingdon, VA

1. Take a Ghost Walk

It’s probably no surprise that this is first on my list. Honestly, a good ghost walk usually gives a really great history of the area, lets you chat with a local to get an inside scoop, and if you’re really lucky maybe bump into the things that go bump in the night.

Abingdon VA does not disappoint with its ghost stories.

We lucked out and took a tour with the Haint Mistress herself, Donnamarie, from Abingdon Spirit Tours.

She is a master storyteller and knew so many great historic and haunted stories from the area.

We walked through historic downtown as she told stories about different buildings and possible hauntings.

When you take a tour with her be sure to ask her about her ghostly ,experience at the Barter Theater.

2.Barter Theater

Speaking of the Barter Theater, it’s not something that would typically make my epic adventure list, but just wait until you read more about the Barter.

The Barter Theater started in the 1930s and was called the Barter Theater because people would barter food in exchange for entrance into the theater.

The cost of entry was 40 cents or the equivalent in produce. This method is still used at least one time each year when theatergoers can barter (donate to an area food bank) for admission.

In 1946 the Barter Theater was designated the State Theater of Virginia and today has over 160,000 annual visitors.

The Barter Theater now includes the Barter Theater 2, a small, intimate setting for smaller production.

The good thing is that the Barter doesn’t have a theater “season.”

There is ALWAYS something happening at the theater ensuring that when you visit you can experience a production.

If you visit the Barter be sure to keep a watch for actors that may have never left and still reside there today.

3. Bike the Virginia Creeper Trail + Whitetop Station

The Creeper Trail is just over 34 miles long with 47 travel bridges that starts in Abingdon Virginia and ends near the Virginia and North Carolina border at Whitetop Station.

The coolest part of this trail is that you can rent a bike in Abingdon, they’ll transport you to Whitetop Station where you can then coast and maybe peddle 17 miles downhill to Damascus, VA.

Wait? WHAT?!?!? Coast or peddle DOWNHILL.? I’m so totally a go for that!

Start at Whitetop Station and coast downhill to the town of Damascus. Once there simply call the bike rental company and they will pick you up and transport you back to Abingdon.

For those that have more energy, you can bike the additional 17 miles back to Abingdon. The trail ends right next to the bike rental shop for convenience.

The bike ride can take anywhere from 2-4 hours from White Top to Damascus depending on your pace and the number of stops you make along the way.

There are historic sites, hiking trails and places to stop for a snack. This trail is so epic that it’s been inducted into the rail to trail hall of fame for its scenery, history and trailside amenities.

Why it’s called the Creeper Trail?

It’s said that the name was inspired by the steam engines that slowly crept up the mountainside while others will argue that it comes from the native Virginia Creeper vine found along the trail.

I’ll leave it up to you to determine why it’s called the Creeper Trail. I just call it FUN and I can’t wait to bike from White Top to Damascus.

4. Go Fly Fishing

There are a number of award-winning rivers to fly fish in the Abingdon area. Whitetop Laurel Creek is a favorite among fishermen and women.

Whitetop Laurel Creek is one of the state’s largest and most beautiful wild trout streams. There are regulated sections of the river that are stocked with brook, brown, and rainbow trout making it an excellent choice for fly fishing.

Some sections of the Whitetop Laurel Creek are accessible from the Creeper Trail, just saying.

5. Hike the Great Channels of VA -A One Of A Kind Experience

This natural 20-acre labyrinth is located in the Channels State Forest. This is the only place in Virginia you are going to find something like this.

People say that is reminiscent of the slot canyons and gorges of the Southwest. It’s definitely a place you’re going to want to hike and see. There are two trails that take hikers to the top of Middle Knob where the Great Channels are located. 

Both hikes are not for the casual walker. The shortest of the hikes via the Brumley Mountain Trail is a 6.6-mile hike round trip with a 1,219-feet of elevation gain.

The longer hike via the Channels Trail is an 11-mile round trip hike. Regardless of which trail you pick, plan to make a day of the hike to account for travel time to the trailhead and playtime in the Channels.

Be sure to take note of where you enter the Channels so you don’t get turned around or lost within the labyrinth.

6. Look for Wild Ponies at Grayson Highlands State Park

I can’t wait to do this. We love seeking out wildlife and find wild ponies simply intriguing. We tried to see the wild horses in Corolla, NC and completely had no luck.

I’m hoping that when we go to Grayson Highlands State Park we’ll be really fortunate and see the wild ponies. More than 100 wild horses roam the area so I feel like our chances are pretty good of spotting them.

Even if we don’t see the wild ponies I know we’ll enjoy hiking this scenic stretch of land in Southwest Virginia.

7. Float the North Fork of the Holston River

What I love about the Holston River is that its flat water with no white water. Some of you may remember my white water experience and are laughing right about now. you’re welcome :).

Taking a float on the Holston River is my kind of nirvana. It’s perfect for beginner kayakers and there are many places along the river to pull over for a picnic. If you’ve never kayaked before this is the perfect place to give it a try.

8. The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail

The headquarters for the Crooked Road is located in Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Getaway which is a great place to start your Crooked Road tour.

After leaving Heartwood, head out along Route 58 and follow the road along the area’s music history and see how it’s woven into the culture and traditions of Southwest Virginia.

In addition to music history, you’ll find Appalachian crafts and coal mining heritage.

What could be better than seeing dogs dressed up in Mardi Gras costumes?

Well, besides chasing chickens, of course.

I can’t think of a better way to spend a bit of time and the reality met my expectations and the parade was a riot to watch.

Love the matching costumes.

At times it’s hard to see the parade participants through the encroaching crowds.

The dogs parade along the lake showing off costumes that range from simple to elaborate. Big dogs, little dogs, and dogs of every size in between join the fun to celebrate Mardi Gras their own way.

Working it like a pro

You can bring a couple chairs or stand along the route. I kind of recommend standing as the spectators kind of move and shuffle closer and closer to the dogs.

At some points you may need to be standing in order to get glimpses of the dogs, but even with the crowds, this is a really fun event to attend during Mardi Gras.

I love how both dogs and owners dress up for the parade and I was impressed by the “floats” for some of the dogs.

Some dogs are costume free but so cute it doesn’t matter 😉

This is a great event for families that love dogs. I adored the parade and had so much fun watching the dogs parade by.

It definitely helped ease missing BB so much during my travels.

I was about to find out as I stepped up in the parade trailer complete with a blue johnny strapped at the back.

By the vibe in the air, I could tell that I was in for a really good time.

Who knew that by the end of the parade I’d make new friends indulge in, maybe one too many, tequila-soaked gummy worms and cheer on a swarm of kids chasing chickens.

This is the kind of fun that can only be had at the Iowa Chicken Run in Iowa (pronounce Eye-Oh-Way), LA.

What Is The Iowa Chicken Run?

This rural, authentic Mardi Gras parade is a centuries-old tradition that includes riders on horseback, ATV’s and on parade trailers. Revelers and parade goers wear their absolute best Mardi Gras colors and you’ll see traditional style costumes mixed in the crowd.

A parade captain is in charge and blows a whistle for everyone to load up and head out. Stopping at rural homes along a predetermined route the captain will blow his whistle again indicating it’s time for zydeco music and dancing to entertain the homeowners.

If the music and dancing meet with homeowners approval gumbo ingredients are donated to the community gumbo dinner for later in the day. Before leaving the yard, a chicken is gently tossed into the air and as soon as the chicken’s feet hit the ground all the kids scramble to try to catch it.

Afterward, everyone loads back up on parade floats, ATV’s and horses and the parade moves on to the next lucky house. Rinse and repeat until the parade ends.

Who Started The Iowa Chicken Run

In 1978, Willie Bushnell, his son Willis Bushnell, Griffin Victorian, Rogers Bellard, Boo-Zoo Chavis, and their families started the Iowa run to keep their heritage and cultural traditions alive for their children and future generations to come.

When Mr. Bushnell passed away his youngest daughter Helen Bushnell Morris and his oldest grandsons and granddaughters continued the tradition until 2009.

The last several years, the eldest grandsons, Rodney Louis Victorian, Kimmy Bellard and their families have preserved the event.

Chasing Chickens

Just when you think you’ve seen it all the captain throws that chicken and the kids go WILD. My number one tip is to stay out of the way of the kids when that chicken flies free.

Stay close enough to enjoy their chicken chasing enthusiasm though because there’s nothing quite like it.

Usually, the captain only tosses a chicken once during a stop, but sometimes a couple of chickens are chased.

Yes, there are multiple chickens that get to share the thrill of being chased by local kids.

The successful child that actually catches the chicken receives a small monetary token from the captain.

I Blame The Tequila Soaked Gummy Worms

Whew, the chicken run is one heck of a good time especially when it comes to a new friend offering up tequila soaked gummy worms.

Planning is key as she made a couple of jars full of these alcohol soaked treats. Just like her mama taught her she made enough to share with strangers and for that, I say THANK YOU.

At first, I declined this interesting delicacy as tequila and I am not on the best of terms.

However, by the third time, the gummy worms came my way I threw caution to the wind and accepted my fate a big, fat juicy gummy worm.

Thankfully, I had a beer chaser to help keep that gummy worm down.

I’ll just say the second worm goes down a lot easier than the first 😉

Zydeco Music

A band on a parade float keeps the music going while traversing between homes.

Once you hop off your parade float for a bit of music and dancing the music is provided by an accordion and scrub board.

Even if you don’t have an ounce of rhythm or dance skill (slowly raises hand) Zydeco music will have you moving to the beat and a couple of gummy worms will have you not caring how bad you dance.

Is It Worth Attending?

In my opinion,  the Iowa Chicken Run is a must-attend event for anyone interested in experiencing an authentic Louisiana rural Mardi Gras. I had so much fun!

The locals were warm, welcoming and made us feel like we’d been friends for years.

So thankful for the invite to join them on an Iowa Chicken Run float.

Lake Charles Mardi Gras is also known as Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana.

The Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras offers family-friendly events brings an estimated 140,000 people together to enjoy music, food, parades, fabulous costumes, carnival rides, zydeco dancing, gumbo cookoff and a children’s day, complete with their own parade. It is the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in Louisiana.

To get the most out of your Mardi Gras experience here is a quick and easy guide to Mardi Gras in Lake Charles, LA.

Mardi Gras kicks off on January 6th with 12th Night. Twelfth Night, which is twelve days after Christmas, is the traditional beginning of the Mardi Gras season prior to Lent.

As a reminder Mardi Gras day is also Fat Tuesday, with celebrations happening up to and include that day. This year Fat Tuesday will happen on February 13, 2024!

Lake Charles, LA has many different events around Mardi Gras, but they vary year to year.

The Complete List of Lake Charles Mardi Gras Parades

February 3: Knight of St. Peter Claver Mardi Gras Parade

Knights Of St. Peter Claver Mardi Gras Parade will take place on February 3rd at 11 a.m. beginning at 2526 Opelousas Street in Lake Charles.

February 4: Lake Charles Mardi Gras Parade

This is the fourth year for the Lake Charles Mardi Gras Parade. This route is over 4 miles long with registrations happening right up until parade time so the number of floats is to be determined. It sure to be a great time

February 8: Lighted Boat Parade

For a different type of Mardi Gras parade head over to the waterfront for this Lighted Boat Parade. The boats get decked out is all things Mardi Gras decoration for an incredible event.

February 9: Mardi Gras Merchants’ Parade

The Mardi Gras Merchants’ Parade is a glowing night parade with participants from local businesses and social organizations.

February 10: Children’s Mardi Gras Stroll

The Children’s Mardi Gras Stroll started in 2022 and is a walking parade designed specifically for children ages 3-12. Children are encouraged to decorate their Mardi Gras umbrellas show off their Mardi Gras spirit. There are no throws during this stroll.

February 10: Krewe of Barkus Dog Parade

The Krewe of Barkus parade is all about costumed pets and their owners getting in the Mardi Gras spirit. This parade has a high attendance of both dogs and their humans and is a community favorite. This was one of my favorite parades as well! Be sure to see my take on the parade over here.

February 10: Krewe of Omega Parade

Krewe of Omega was formed to bring Mardi Gras activities to the black community. Krewe of Omega is the first and oldest Southwest Louisiana krewe to hold its own parade and should not be missed.

February 11: Mardi Gras Children’s Parade

The Mardi Gras Children’s Day Parade is one of the longest and most well-attended parades leading up to Mardi Gras Day.

February 13: Iowa Chicken Run

This is a must “see it to believe it” Mardi Gras bucket list experience. This is an authentic Mardi Gras experience that is less about the extravaganza and more about the cultural history of Mardi Gras gone country. Be prepared to chase some chickens as the parade winds through neighborhoods. February 13: Second Line Stroll

Local community groups show off their Mardi Gras spirit as they take a Second Line Stroll down Ryan Street to the tunes of Mardi Gras music in this walking parade. The stroll precedes the Motor Gras Parade and the Krewe of Krewes Parade.

February 13: Motor Gras Parade

The Motor Gras Parade is filled with hot rods, classic cars and motorcycles. This parade precedes the Krewe of Krewes parade.

February 13: Mardi Gras Southwest Krewe of Krewes Parade

Get ready for the gaudy as the Krewe of Krewes parade winds along the 4-mile parade route. Over 60 Krewes with more than 100 elaborate krewe floats. This is the perfect way to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Tips For Having The Best Mardi Gras Experience in Lake Charles, LA

Book Hotel Early (ie: NOW): Don’t wait to book your hotel room. Rooms fill quickly and if you don’t want to be disappointed I recommend making the hotel reservation now.

Know the Parade Route: Check the parade websites (linked above), grab a map and note the parade route. Pay attention to where may be the best place to see the parade. I recommend towards the beginning of the route while everyone is fresh and ready to party.

Parking: This is where knowing the parade route will help. Look for lots or street parking near the route, but be sure to follow the parking rules. The last thing you’ll want is a parking ticket at the end of the festive day.  Also note that when the parade is over there will be a lot of traffic leaving the area so plan accordingly.

Check the weather: I made the mistake of not checking the weather before flying to Lake Charles for Mardi Gras. Needless to say I wish I would have brought a heavier coat and gloves. Yes, Louisiana can cool right off so you’ll want to be prepared.

Go Early/Don’t Be Late: To get a great spot you may want to arrive early and find a great spot along the route. Arrive late and all the spots, especially parking, may be gone.

“Throw Me Something Mister”: Practice the phrase “Throw me something mister” and yell it loudly and proudly during the parade. As beads, doubloons, cups and other Mardi Gras treasures are tossed your way do your best to catch them. Be sure to take a tote bag to the parade to hold your throws.

If something lands on the ground, place your foot on it and pick it up after the float has passed. Please DO NOT run into the street to grab swag. There are many, many floats and lots of beads and swag to be had, remember to stay safe.

Wear the Colors: Get in the spirit of the season and wear the traditional colors of Mardi Gras, purple, gold and green, to the parades.

Bring snacks/water: A Mardi Gras parade experience can last a few hours. Be sure to pack snacks and water to stay hydrated and keep from getting hangry.

Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu: Largest display of Mardi Gras costumes in the world. See costumes, history of King Cake, Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana, and climb aboard a float! (Temporarily closed and should reopen in 2024, follow their Facebook for updates)

The Mardi Gras Royal Gala takes place the evening of February 12. This is a a lavish promenade of krewes’ royalty in extravagant, glittering costumes before thousands of residents and visitors. This is a high energy event that takes place the evening before Fat Tuesday!

The World Famous Cajun Extravaganza and Gumbo Cook-Off is set to take place on February 10th at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The event is a must-be-there mix of award-winning food, floor-stomping music, and the down-home spirit of Mardi Gras
