We’re sharing all the best activities on Mackinac Island plus many of them are FREE! 

Start packing because there are many things to do on Mackinac Island and you won’t want to put it off another summer!

Although, fair warning, the island is busy during the summer months. If you can visit this unique place in the fall during the week it will be a bit quieter.

Grab a ferry in either St. Ignace (in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) or in Mackinaw City (in Michigan’s lower peninsula).  Both offers multiple ferries a day to and from the island.

You’ll want to plan, at a minimum, an entire day trip to the island, but if it’s possible plan at least a 2-day, 1-night visit. I recently stayed for 3-nights and wanted to stay longer.

The island life is definitely for me 😉

ALL THE FUN THINGS TO DO ON MACKINAC ISLAND

Visit Fort Mackinac

Even if you aren’t a history buff you are going to enjoy a visit to this very historical site.

Make a day of it at Fort Mackinac while you learn about life during the early days on the island and the history of the fur trade. Arrive early and ask if you can fire the 9 am canon, have lunch at the tearoom which offers excellent views of downtown Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac.

Take a Hike

The island has miles of excellent hiking trails.

The best part? Since you are surrounded by water it’s hard to get lost. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes.In the early summer look for Lady’s Slipper and Trillium in bloom.

Visit Anne’s Tablet

Walk past the back entrance to the Fort, take a right on the road that leads to the Fort administrative offices and then veer to the left onto the hiking trails.

You’ll pass the Somewhere In Time Gazebo, follow the path into the woods to the right.

Continue on and you’ll discover a historic marker with a great overlook of the Straits.

Anne’s Tablet is a tribute to author Constance Fenimore Woolson who spent her childhood summers on the island and became a well-known, early 19th-century author.

Her first published novel, Anne (which is currently FREE on Amazon Kindle), is based on the Island and was published in the late 1800’s.

The entire island is very photogenic.

From selfies to landscapes to action shots your island experience demands to be captured on film.

Since Mackinac Island is a bit of a throwback to another time it’s only fitting that you use a camera that is the same.

Visit the Somewhere In Time Movie Locations

It’s a cult classic and fans flock to the island every year to visit the movie locations and attend the Somewhere In Time Festival held at the Grand Hotel.

Located near the Fort Mackinac administrative offices is the gazebo from the movie. A great place to sit a spell.

Enjoy One of the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours

This is a great way to see many of the islands popular sites as well as hear entertaining stories and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride.

You can pick up a carriage tour on Main Street as soon as you get off the ferry.

Go for a Bike Ride

Want to explore the island on your own time?

Bring your own bike or rent one on the island and spend the day pedaling around this roughly 4 square mile island.

By the way, Mackinac Island is very pet-friendly so bring fido with you while you explore the island!

Visit Fort Holmes

Fort Holmes is part of the Fort Mackinac Historic State Parks and is located on the highest point on the island. It has recently been restored and provides an excellent view of the island.

This is an island favorite. Arch Rock is lovely any time of day but at sunrise, it’s quiet and has a pretty golden glow.

Admiral Dave’s Arcade

Rainy day? No worries, head over to Mission Point Resort and introduce the kids to classic arcade games and play some video games.

A change machine is available in the arcade.

Find Sunset Rock

There is a trail behind the Inn at Stonecliffe that winds its way through the woods and eventually leads you to Sunset Rock.

From here you can see the mighty Mackinac Bridge and watch as the sun sets over the Straits.

Take Up Square Dancing

On Tuesdays during the summer head over to St. Anne’s church and get your do si do on as your swing your partner round and round on the church deck.

Wawashkamo Golf Course for a History Lesson

Wawashkamo is an interesting blend of history and today.

It is Michigans oldest, unchanged, private nine-hole golf course. It was founded in 1898 and that way you see it today is mostly how it was over a century ago.

This is also the land of the great 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island. This was once a farmer’s field where American soldiers attempted and failed to drive the British from their hill.

When you tee off at the first hole you are teeing off on historic ground.

FREE to view, a fee to play.

Paddle the Straits

Great Turtle Kayak Tours offers two locations and many tour options for getting out on the water to explore the Straits of Mackinac.

The first option is to take a tour from the mainland before heading to the island. Go the Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City and enjoy a paddle to the Fort and under the mighty Mackinac Bridge. That is definitely a bucket list item.

Once you are on the island join Great Turtle Kayak Tours for a paddle to famous Mackinac Island landmarks. SUP is also available.

TIP: Be sure to check out the crystal clear waters of the Straits!

Take a Stroll Around Sugar Loaf Rock

This 75-foot tall rock stands strong in the middle of the island. View it from afar to appreciate its beauty and then take a walk around it to appreciate its immense size.

Sample ALL the Fudge

There are approximately 13 fudge shops on Mackinac Island and they all offer free samples of fudge.

Watch the fudge makers twists and flip hot fudge on a marble slab while nibbling on their delightful creations.

This is great to do right before leaving the island so you can find your favorite flavors and take home a couple of tastes of the island for family and friends.

Fudge is the best selling souvenir on the island.  (Start and end at Ryba’s….just sayin’)

If fudge isn’t your thing there is no shortage of ice cream on the island.

Play Golf

There are three golf courses on the island. One at the Grand Hotel with a front and back 9, a historic 9-hole course at Wawashkamo, and an 18-hole putting course at Mission Point.

Discover New Artists 

The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, a part of the Mackinac State Historic Parks is located on Main St. at the east edge of Marquette Park and offers art that is centered around Mackinac Island.

The Art Museum also offers hands-on art activities for kids for a small fee. Contact them to sign up.

Watch Wings take Flight at the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House 

This 1800 sq ft tropical garden is filled with hundreds of live butterflies from four continents.

Watch them hatch from a chrysalis and take their first flight.

Go Window Shopping

There are a variety of shops along Main St. that offers everything from souvenirs to home decor to fashion. The Grand Hotel offers quaint stores both inside the Grand Hotel and on the street leading up to it.

Fly A Kite

Bring your kite and let it fly high.

The great lawn at Mission Point is a great kite flying location as is Marquette Park in front of Fort Mackinac.

Go to Church

The Little Stone Church was built of local fieldstones in 1904.

There are stained glass windows in the front of the church that depict the history of Mackinac Island. Stop and read the historical marker for more history when you visit.

Visit the Library

This library may have the best waterfront view on the entire island.

A small deck on the back of the library invites you to sit and enjoy a book while watching freighters and ferries pass by.

Be sure to check the used book sale section at the library to buy a book to take home or enjoy while you are there.

See Skull Cave

A small squat-ish style cave that was once believed to be the burial ground for Native Americans and was a hiding spot for a fleeing fur trader.

Today the cave is free of bones and visitors are asked to view the cave from behind the fence and not try to climb inside.

Enjoy A Concert In The Park

Every Thursday at 6:30 PM from June 27- August 22 in Marquette Park you can enjoy music in the great outdoors. No worries if it rains, the concert moves indoors to the Center for the Arts at Mission Point.

Take a Ghost Tour

The Haunts of Mackinac offers a look at the eery side of Mackinac Island with stories of days gone by. The walking tour is around downtown and is an easy pace for all fitness levels.

Cheer a Team at a Vintage Baseball Game

This annual event is held at the oldest continuously used baseball field in the state. Fort Mackinac Never Sweats will compete against Rochester Grangers at the game in July.

Interpretive signs dot the bike trail around the island sharing the native history that makes this island such a special place to visit.

Take the reins in hand and experience a horse and carriage ride around the island as you guide the horse.

This unique experience is a unique way to truly experience life on Mackinac Island.

Fun Things To Do In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Visit the Waterfront Parks on the Scenic Potomac River

A few miles away from historic Old Town Alexandria you’ll find Jones Point Lighthouse at Jones Point Park.

The Jones Point Lighthouse is one of the last riverine lighthouses in the country and the only one still standing in the Chesapeake Bay area. 

Around the lighthouse you’ll find a few historic boundary markers for state lines.

The lighthouse is a short walk from the parking area.

Pass under the bridge, walk along the Potomac River and you’ll come to the lighthouse. It’s well worth visiting.

Walk the Quaint Historic Streets

King Street Mile is considered one of the great streets of America and is the heart of Old Town.

Here you’ll find centuries-old architecture and many independently owned restaurants and boutiques.

Queen Street is home to the cobalt-blue Spite House, America’s skinniest historic home.

It’s an entire 7-feet wide. Pose with arms wide in front of the doorway on the 500 block of Queen Street.This street is full of one lovely row house after another. 

Prince Street takes you back in time as you wander down the cobblestone street with its arched tree canopy

Explore the Art Scene

In the neighborhood of Del Ray, stroll by murals capturing Alexandrian’s history, such as the old St. Asaph Racetrack on Cheesetique’s “postcard” painting, by Chad Brady.

This is an easy walk and lets you enjoy the murals up close.

Find a souvenir or three at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. This old munitions factory turned art center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. 

You’ll find 82 artist studios where you can watch the creative process and ask questions and, most importantly, purchase original work for your own collection.

Absorb Some Alexandria History

The George Washington National Masonic Memorial is just one of many historic sites in the area. However, since we’re keeping our list short I’m only including two historic sites and one tour. 

Why this one? Well, the architecture of this historic building really draws me.

Sadly, it wasn’t open when I visited, but I would love to explore the inside and maybe go to the top of the tower. I don’t even know if that’s ever an option but I bet it has epic views.

Harry Potter fans will want to visit the historic Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum.

I would be remiss to not tell you that ghost tours take place daily with tickets available at the visitor center.

Tours were sold out during our visit, but I can only imagine the haunted stories you’ll hear in this area!

Where to Eat and Stay in Old Town Alexandria

Dinner at the Majestic Cafe will not disappoint. The historic fixture has been on King Street since 1932.

Simply look for the neon signs as you stroll along King Street and you’ll find the Majestic. Inside you’ll find a lush art deco atmosphere resplendent with rich jewel-tones. 

I started with the Heirloom Tomato Panzanelle, which includes strawberries and red onions. I had the hanger steak for my entree. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked.

Sadly, there wasn’t room left for dessert, but I’m sure that would have been just as tasty.

The Hotel Indigo is the perfect place to stay for the night. Located close to the river in the historic district and walking distance to everything Old Town has to offer. 

Plus, practically right across the street you’ll find Cafe du Soleil for your morning coffee fix!

We’re lucky enough that we live near the SCRAP, a creative reuse store, which is crafting supplies sold at very affordable rates. We love it and highly recommend finding something similar near you.

Go Ghost Hunting

You can use our master list of ghost tours/paranormal investigations near you to find an event in your area. If you don’t find anything usually a quick Facebook events or EventBrite search will net you exactly what you are looking for.

TikTok Ghost Painting

If you’re on TikTok you’ve probably watched many ghost painting videos. In short, you purchase a framed piece of art from your local thrift store and then update it for spooky season complete with ghosts, witches, bats, pumpkins and fall colors. Honestly, the sky is the limit and it’s a great way to repurpose those old, tired prints.

In addition to the art print, some additional supplies you’ll need include:

Make Halloween Friendship Bracelets

Swifties are pros at making friendship bracelets, but even if you’ve never made one before they are easy enough to do. As Taylor says, “So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it,”

Stay at A Haunted Hotel 

Grab Your gear and go stay at one of these Haunted Hotels   for a ghostly adventure. These hotels have so much character and history that even if you don’t have any activity during your stay.

You are still able to enjoy the beauty and history of the properties. One of our favorites is the Historic Windsor Hotel in Americus, Georgia. Dubbed one of the most haunted hotels in the state. I’ve spent a couple nights there and, sadly, had no encounters, but I’d definitely love to go back and try again.

Enjoy A Bonfire With A Movie

I don’t know about you, but I love watching movies and what  better way to spend  the month of October than watching Halloween movies outside.

You have the crisp  fall air and  if you are doing it right you have a bonfire.  What could be better than movies and s’mores, I’ve compiled a list of items to help you get started on this movie night adventure.

Tie One On with A Halloween Tie Blanket

These are the easiest blankets to make and are perfect for those cool fall days. Grab some fleece at your local craft store and a pair of scissors and you’ll have everything you need to make a Halloween tie blanket. 

Paint Pumpkin Pottery (or take a pumpkin glass blowing class)

Grab pumpkin pottery at your local craft store or do a quick search on EventBrite or FB events to find a local pottery class near you. 

If you prefer glass blowing call around to you local glass shops to see what’s available. 

Take Ghost Photos For You and Your Pets

This is one of our favorite things to do. Dig through your linen closet and grab some sheets. If you don’t find any you like stop by the thrift store and buy some. Then head out to some of your favorite places, set up the camera on a tripod and start taking photos. 

Best thing about these is you don’t have to worry about hair or makeup plus the pets can be involved!! 

Let your creativity go wild and see what fun photos you can create.

Be sure to add some props like pumpkins, witch hat, sunglasses, etc.

Tasting At Cider Farms

Check your local cider farms and see if they do any tasting events, here are a couple places local to me that you can visit Blakes, Virtue Cider, Uncle Johns Cider Mill, and try out some of their hard ciders.

Make Your Besties A Boo Basket

We’ve curated a great list of items to include in a boo basket, but honestly it can include anything you want. From flamboyant to simple everyone loves getting a boo basket on Halloween.

Remember, Boo Baskets should be delivered in secret and let with no indication of who it is from. Be sure to include a “You’ve Been Boo’d” card or tag with the basket.

What Americus Georgia is, is a place rich with history, the arts, some of the friendliest people I’ve come across, and an incredible entrepreneurial spirit.

If you love art and culture, learning about history, visiting national parks, or even hunting for ghosts, Americus is THE place to be.

How To Get To Americus Georgia

If you’re not within driving distance the cheapest way to explore Americus/Sumter County is to fly into Atlanta.

Once in Atlanta grab a rental car, which in itself, is a bit of an adventure as you’ll take a train to the arrivals/luggage area, grab your luggage and then take another train to the car parking structure.

From there it’s an easy drive, about 2 1/2 hours southwest, of the city.

Americus Center for the Arts

Run by the Americus-Sumter County Arts Council, and features the work of local, and young, artists. The Arts Council also puts on workshops, camps and events.

Americus Hot Glass Beer Fest – April

Each April Americus combes their love of craft beer with the history of glass blowing and throws one heck of a party.

This is a not to be missed festival!

Tapping Americus’ rich history of artisan glass blowing and combining it with Georgia’s innovative craft brewing culture, Hot Glass Craft Beer means to bring these two artisan worlds together in one epic event.

This event will feature at least 20 regional breweries with three to four different beers from each.

Americus Music Fest – October 

Enjoy a wide variety of musical genres from Rock to Country, Hip Hop to Soul, Jazz to Blues, and so much more in between.

For the second year, we will welcome back the Food Truck Fest to Jackson Street, as well as craft vendors and area nonprofits. New this year?

The Americus Arts Council will host the Art Fest down Finn Street in the Americus Arts District, plus J & R Rentals are pulling out all of the stops with a MEGA Kid Zone on the green! IT’S FREE!!

SAM Shortline Excursion Train will be offering trips to and from Plains, as well as a ride from the park to Americus to enjoy the festivities! Plus, in between sets, walk the short two blocks to downtown and do a little shopping!

Bring lawn chairs and blankets but leave the coolers at home. Don’t worry- wine, beer & spirits will be for sale!

Andersonville National Historic Site

Home to the Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the final fourteen months of the American Civil War.

During their confinement, almost 13,000 died from disease, overcrowding (the prison was built to house 10,000 prisoners), bad sanitation, malnutrition, and exposure (yes, it gets COLD in the winter and it’s blazing hot with no shade in the summer).

National Prisoner of War Museum

At the same location as the Andersonville National Historic Site giving you the opportunity to visit both places with one stop.

This museum showcases the men and women who have suffered in captivity. This is a place where their story is told. The stories are heartbreaking but important that they are not forgotten.

Andersonville National Cemetery

Located 300 yards north of the prison site it was established in 1864. The 12,920 men who died at the prison camp are buried in the cemetery.

Principal characteristics and features of the cemetery landscape include the 4-1/2 foot high brick wall that surrounds the site and is an integral part of both the aesthetic and historical scene; the regular and rhythmic rows of marble headstones; the large canopy trees; and the large monuments that are spaced around the entire site.

Art Hive Studio

Located in the heart of historic downtown Americus, Art Hive Studio is a boutique process art studio offering a variety of family friendly art experiences that encourages guests to connect, create and celebrate.

This has become a popular spot for families looking for a fun activity in a whimsical environment.

Georgia Southwestern Fine Arts Building Gallery

The gallery showcases the work of students, as well as visiting artists, in the Department of Visual Arts. It contains a second gallery, as well–the James Earl Carter Gallery.

Haunted History Tour of Americus Georgia

Speaking of ghosts, during the month of October there are a number of ghost walking tours taking place.

The tour walks your around historic downtown and shares some colorful ghost stories.

Remember, you are in the south, so some of the stories might be a trigger for you, but they are all historically accurate and interesting.

Sadly, I didn’t see any ghosts on my tour, but it wasn’t from lack of trying.

Ghost Hunting Tips:

• Turn off cell phone during investigations and tours. Your phone can interfere with the reading on a K2 meter.
• When attending a group tour always try to be towards the front of the group.
• Go with an open mind and just plan on having a great time!
• Invest in high-quality equipment including an EVP recorder and headphones.
• When asking questions, ask pertinent questions to the building/area or era.
• Visit the same place multiple times. You’ll undoubtedly get a different experience.

Hot Glass Academy

Plan a creative date and explore the artsy side of Americus. Mobile Glassblowing Studios is a one-of-a-kind business that creates portable furnaces for everyone, from the hobbyist to the professional.

The Americus location has a small gallery of pieces and offers classes to the public.

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site

You can’t visit Americus without making the 20-minute trek west to the agricultural community of Plains, GA that President Carter still calls home. You’ll pass his residence if you drive from Americus to Jimmy Carter’s boyhood home.

Most of the town of Plains can be considered a National Historic Site. You can visit the boyhood home, his high school which is now the park museum and visitor center, the Plains train depot which served as the presidential campaign headquarters, and the Plains Historic District.

Mobile Glassblowing Studios

Offers workshops, a gallery space and events throughout the year. Workshops are by appointment only and require a minimum of two people.

Stop by the gallery to see many locally made glass items including cups, bowls, vases, jewelry, sculptures and more.

Rylander Theatre

Catch a show at this hub for the performing arts, carefully restored and renovated from its early days as a vaudeville theater to a modern venue.

Reopened in 1999, the theater has their own troupe and also hosts concerts and plays. Note, there are many haunted stories from employees. Definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

The SAM Shortline Excursion Train 

This is a great rail experience in 1949 vintage train cars. A great glimpse of yesteryear paired with the best of today’s South visiting sweet towns brimming with attractions, shopping and eateries.

Some not to miss train excursions include:

• Wine & Cheese Train: Enjoy an hour-and-a-half long round trip train ride aboard historic air conditioned railroad cars for a wine tasting adventure with Paulk Vineyard. Trips will depart from Americus Jackson Street Station. Wine and cheese tray will be served onboard the train as you relax and enjoy the scenery.
• The Presidential Flyer: Riding in air-conditioned, 1949 vintage train cars, you will travel from Georgia Veterans State Park, across Lake Blackshear to Plains, GA and  Archery. Explore President Jimmy Carter’s hometown, go shopping and sample peanut butter treats. They you will travel to President Carters Boyhood home farm at Archery, GA.
• Murder Mystery Dinner Train: Depart from the Americus train station for a two and half hour round trip train ride to Plains. Ride aboard historic air conditioned railroad cars for an exciting, interactive Murder Mystery Dinner Train and try to solve the murder.
• Hot Glass Brewdest: Enjoy a relaxing train ride to the Hot Glass Craft Beer Festival in Americus. Let the SAM Shortline do the driving for you. Book fast as seats are limited! 

Thirteenth Colony Distilleries

Try their lineup of award-winning whiskeys, bourbons, vodkas and gins in the form of a craft cocktail from one of the local bars. The company’s name is a nod to the state of Georgia, which was the last, or thirteenth, of the American colonies.

Places To Eat & Drink in Americus, Georgia

Gladys Kitchen

If you only have time to eat at one place during your visit you need to take your happy self right on over to Gladys Kitchen for some cafeteria-style southern soul food.

The only thing you need to know is to order the butter roll dessert.

This is definitely a case where you want dessert.

The recipe is top secret (I asked), but it reminds me of bread pudding, but better.

Even when I try to eat healthily when I travel I still indulge and this was definitely worth the indulgence.

Little Brother’s Bistro & Cafe

Little Brother’s Bistro has been serving unique, fresh and delicious soups, salads, sandwiches and more since 2009.

Located in the Historic Windsor Hotel and open just for lunch they served up one of the best salads I’d had in ages.

Order at the counter and they’ll bring your food to your table.

Make sure you look at the daily specials. There were many but I’m glad I went with the salad.

Toboggan Steve’s

Well, you know I had to check this one out. I never did solve the puzzle of why a place in southern Georgia has the word Toboggan in the name.

However, it didn’t take long to discover why this pub-style spot is frequented by the locals.

Wings, burgers, wraps, craft beer, cocktails, and even dessert martinis! Live music throughout the week.

The Station

Located in downtown Americus and offering up everything from soups and sandwiches to steaks and seafood. There is also a full bar.

Wolf Creek Plantation

Sumter Counties only winery Wolf Creek Plantation features more than 2500 muscadine vines covering more than 20 acres.

A tasting room and winery tours are available. Sample their signature award-winning muscadine wines.

Where To Stay in Americus, Georgia – Historic Windsor Hotel

When the offer arrives to stay at one of the most haunted hotels in Georgia this ghost hunter jumps at the chance!

The Historic Windsor Hotel in historic downtown Americus has so many haunted stories that the front desk has a paranormal book that records the happenings.

Built in 1892 the Windsor was a 100-room, five-story Victorian structure complete with towers, balconies, and a three-story open atrium lobby.

The hotel is now comprised of 53 period-style rooms all with modern amenities instead of the original 100 rooms.

The lobby, which is a gorgeous welcome, is one of my favorite features. I love the open atrium-style in hotels and even though it’s open it still feels warm and inviting.

Windsor Hotel Restaurants

There are two restaurants on-site. We dined at Rosemary & Thyme and really enjoyed it. Be sure to check out the tile flooring that is original to the building.

Floyd’s Pub has outdoor seating on the verandah when the weather is cooperative.

Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant is a modern, upscale American restaurant located in the Historic Windsor Hotel. White linen tablecloths, candlelight and quiet ambiance welcome diners.

What Is The Most Haunted Room at the Windsor Hotel?

I asked to be in the most haunted room at the hotel and the clerk handed over keys to room 333 with a “are you sure?” look on her face.

Game on! I’m so excited to be here I’m like a kid before Christmas. I have two nights to find and record evidence of ghosts.

My room is stylish with 12-foot ceilings, a full bath and loads of space. As soon as I can I unpack my luggage while getting a feel for the room.

Honestly, nothing feels amiss, but I’m hopeful that I’ll have an encounter during my stay.

The first night I stayed awake as long as possible, wandered the halls, and absolutely nothing happened. When I finally slept it was soundly and without dreams.

The second night I woke numerous times but never figured out why. There were no noises, no weird movement in the room, nothing that led me to believe anything other than I was having another restless night.

Even though I never encountered a ghost I still loved my stay at the beautiful historic Windsor Hotel.

Harmony Inn

Have a hauntingly good time at Harmony Inn. They offer up great food, beers on tap, live music, and fantastic ghost stories. Seriously, what’s not to love 😉

Wunderbar Coffee & Crepes

Located in the historic opera hall in Harmony, Wunderbar is roasting up their own coffee beans and creating incredible savory and sweet crepes. It’s, honestly, a great way to start your day in Butler County.

This will fit your need for some really good Italian or indulge in their award-winning pizza. It’s a pretty popular place so if you visit during a busy time be prepared to wait, but it’s totally worth it!

Log Cabin Inn

The Log Cabin Inn is built around a historic cabin that dates back to the early 1800s. Its cozy environment and great food make it a must when visiting the area.

They are cooking up aged Black Angus beef, chops, steaks, fresh seafood, sandwiches, soups & salads. You won’t be able to say no to their homemade desserts and for my friends that enjoy a good cocktail, there is a full-service bar.

Where to explore in Butler County

Stroll Historic Harmony

Harmony has a very interesting back history. The town was founded in 1804 by a group of Harmony Society of German Lutheran Separatists who were seeking religious freedom. In the 19th century, they quickly become America’s most successful communal group.

They called themselves Harmonists and believed that Christ’s return was imminent. (Side note, someday I’ll write a story about my childhood and my religious zealot parents who, throughout my entire childhood and till this day, believe that Christ will be showing up any minute now. It will be a pretty entertaining read)

They resided in Harmony, PA for 1o years before relocating to New Harmony, IN.

The Harmonists, a celibate culture to remain spiritually pure, eventually had no one left to carry on their beliefs or way of life. By 1905 there were only three members remaining and the society dissolved.

The Harmonists community may be extinct but the footprint they left behind is not. The small historic town is fascinating to walk around.

The entire area is historic district and still retains the old architectural character of an old German village. There are more than 50 buildings with 9 of them belonging to the historical society.

Be sure to make your way over to the Harmonite cemetery where no headstones stand and a massive one-ton revolving door guards the entrance to the sacred ground where 100 souls are buried.

Maridon Museum

This is the only museum in the Western Pennsylvania region with a specific focus on Asian Art and Culture coupled with German Meissen porcelain.

Four galleries, full of incredible works of art, make it a very enjoyable museum without being overwhelming. In addition to the galleries, the museum offers many special events and activities that would be well worth attending if you happen to be in the area.

Westpark Alpacas

Be sure to check their website prior to your visit to see if they are hosting any farm days. If they are, its great fun to go out and play with the alpacas. They are so adorable and may just have you trying to figure out how to start your own alpaca farm.

Nautical Nature Boat Tour

A 45 passenger enclosed pontoon boat takes guests on interpretive boat tours on Lake Arthur. You’re able to walk out onto the front deck to enjoy the view or take photos. The guides do a great job sharing the story of the lake, area and wildlife.

Note: I abhor 8-legged critters, seriously, they freak me out, if you have similar feelings please note that a number of them joined us on our cruise. I spent a great deal of time out on the deck where it seemed to be more critter free.

Food Walking Tour in Saxonburg <<–A Must!

Combine two great things: delicious foods + a charming small town complete with historic narration. Honestly, what’s not to love? 100-year-old preserved buildings line the quaint Main St of Saxonburg.

Today restaurants, artists, boutiques and more reside in these buildings and are ready to welcome you to town.

The best way to discover the hidden gems of Saxonburg is with Burgh Bits and Bites food tour. New and old restaurants provide tastes along the tour. You’ll try everything from soup to German meats to coffee (hello!!!) and so much more.

Not to Miss Festivals in Butler County

Living Dead Weekend

This cult classic was filmed over 50 years ago in Evans City. Every year the city throws a party to celebrate the zombie film that started it all. Join the fun, take a location tour, meet celebrities, browse exhibits,  sit in on panel discussions and so much more. Held every October.

Mars New Year Festival 

The New Year on Mars isn’t the same as the New Year on Earth.  Instead, it is celebrated every 687  Earth days and the town of Mars, PA celebrates the planet’s New Year with a big celebration.

A blast off dinner celebrates the actual New Year followed by breakfast the next morning. Then, in May, the town hosts Mars Exploration Celebration Days which is a festival that partners with NASA to bring education and awareness to Mars exploration.

Great fun for the entire family.

What to See & Do in Alton, IL

Named one of the most haunted small town in America there is no shortage of strange phenomena. There are a number of guided tours available and some take you into buildings where the odd and paranormal have been known to happen.

This is one of my favorite towns to go ghost hunting and I’ve written about it a couple times.

To get the best view of the Alton and Mississippi Rivers a visit to the Melvin Price Locks & Dam is in order.

An eight story view awaits you as well as a guided tour which will let you in on all of the action on one of the busiest locks of the river.

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center is the perfect destination for anyone interested in the expedition of Lewis and Clark. An impressive 55 foot full scale replica of the keel-boat of the party will stir your imagination of the preparations that went into the famous expedition!

The Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower is the place to hear the story of Lewis and Clark while getting an amazing view of the river in 50-foot increments. Enjoy a guided tour and prepare to be amazed by the views that await you on a clear day.

During the age of slavery, a pastor in the Alton area was moved to write editorials that were so strong and moving that the slaveholding element of the area made him their object of hatred.

The Lovejoy monument stands in honor of Elijah Lovejoy, who was killed in 1837 for his views of equality. Pay a visit here to take it all in, and ponder peace for a moment.

Alton is a premier site for Eagle viewing during the winter, but a number of species of birds spend time in the area throughout the year. The Aubudon Center at Riverlands offers a great spot for bird watching and even has binoculars to borrow during your visit.

Take the free ferry over to Calhoun County, located on a narrow strip of land between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, and enjoy a taste of the region.

Roadside farm stands dot the two-lane road through the county as farmers sell fruits, veggies, jams, and more. Bring the kids and find the perfect pumpkin for home. While there shop for antique and see how many quilt barns you can find.

Drive the Great River Road along the Mississippi to the village of Grafton where the more adventurous can go ziplining.

Everyone else can visit the Grafton Winery & Brewhaus.

The Pere Marquette State Park/Lodge offers a magnificent stay for couples, families, and groups. You can get away from it all here while enjoying amazing meals, shopping opportunities, boat rentals and even a chance to play life-size chess.

Where to Eat in Alton, IL

Josephines Tearoom has been offering exceptional experiences since 1979. From shopping to mouthwatering meals, Josephine’s will become one of the places you never forget visiting.

The tea rooms and shopping experiences for ladies make this a must stop here location for a spot of tea, something delectable and a unique souvenir to take home.

Grafton Brewhaus and Winery is a spot for all seasons. It is centrally located, features so many adult beverages ranging from local wines, including many award winners to Craft and Micro-brewed beers that I never wanted to leave this place.

Oh! And you can eat here too if the liquid lunch isn’t quite your thing! I loved the family operated atmosphere and the setting.

Maeva’s Coffee is Alton’s only independent coffee shop, and it is a must stop at the place because there is so much to see and do in the Alton area, a great cup of coffee is exactly what you need to keep going!

I admired that fair trade goods are used in the shop. The Baked Goods? Oh, yeah! These are worthy of an article all on their own.

My Just Desserts is THE spot to go for dessert (& maybe lunch, but eat dessert first). The owner is simply lovely and seriously knows how to bake a great pie!

Located in historic Alton and only open from 11a-4p so make sure you don’t miss your window of opportunity.

A visit to Alton, IL wouldn’t be complete without enjoying a meal at Tony’s, an old-school Italian steakhouse and bar since 1954. Their wine list alone is worth a stop.

They offer 60 wines by the bottle and 30 by the glass. If you aren’t up for a full meal, stop in the Prohibition Lounge for a nightcap.

Look for trips that are a short drive away, and try to take advantage of any three-day weekend you have.

Even if you just have a weekend, a short trip means you can leave Friday evening and come back Sunday evening feeling refreshed and happy to have enjoyed some fall fun.

5 Fall Family Getaways

Hit a Pumpkin Patch Trail

Get out to the country and find a concentration of pumpkin patches. These farms are usually great places for family outings, and often times will feature corn mazes and hayrides.

No matter where you are, odds are good you aren’t too far from an agricultural area dotted with pumpkin farms or even farmer’s markets featuring pumpkins.

Let the kids pick out their own pumpkins to take back home and decorate.

Find a Scenic Fall Route

If you are a short drive from the mountains, there are likely many beautiful scenic routes for viewing fall foliage with the family.

Be sure to let each child pick a few leaves with bright colors to take back home and preserve in wax paper.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are great choices in the Mid-Atlantic, almost anywhere in New England is gorgeous, there are several wonderful scenic fall drives in the Midwest, and the Redwoods of Northern California are stunning this time of year.

Visit a National Park

The great outdoors is in splendor in fall in the many national parks, and they make a great destination for a fall family getaway.

The parks often have some great activities and programs geared at kids, such as learning nature hikes.

Stay at a Haunted Inn

If you think it won’t be too scary for the kids (or for you!), look for an inn or hotel reputed to be a haunted inn to get the kids in a Halloween mood.

If that is a bit too scary, spend a weekend frequenting play haunted houses. It can also be fun to couple that with destinations with candy or chocolate factories that offer tours for a real Halloween-themed vacation.

Take a Halloween or Fall Cruise

Another great option for kids and grown-ups to enjoy is to take a Halloween-themed cruise. Carnival Cruise Lines feature costume contests, ghost stories and trick-or-treating on board.

There are also several cruise lines that offer spectacular fall cruises in New England and Canada.

If you have a school-aged child, they will miss some classes. Just have them bring the classwork on board for those stretches at sea.

Here’s some of my favorite things to do in Vicksburg.

WHERE TO STAY IN VICKSBURG, MS

To kick off the weekend, I found the perfect place to stay: The Duff Green Mansion. This Civil War era mansion is the ideal setting for a weekend full of hauntings and history.

My room, The Dixie Room, is also the home of the lost soul of a Confederate soldier who is said to rock the night away next to the fireplace.

Unfortunately, he did not make himself known during my stay.

But everything else about this Bed & Breakfast suited me just right.

A three-course breakfast is served every morning, followed by a complimentary tour of the mansion.

During the tour, I learned all about the couple who built the mansion and how it became a designated hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

The Duff Green is ripe for paranormal activity, and I thoroughly enjoyed searching it out during our stay!

WHERE TO EAT IN VICKSBURG, MS

Vicksburg has no shortage of fantastic places to dine. Everywhere we ate graced us with the southern flair both in hospitality and in cuisine that I’ve come to expect. 

Cottonwood Public House is where you go for pizza and beer. Or buffalo wings and a cocktail.

The Walnut Hills Restaurant is a staple in the area, known for its “World Famous Southern Plantation Cuisine.”

Anchuca Historic Mansion and Inn offers gourmet southern dishes in a casual yet elegant style. The tender, juicy steak is a favorite among the guests at Cafe Anchuca.

The Main Street Market Cafe prides itself in using local and seasonal ingredients. Everything is made from scratch, including Betty’s legendary biscuits.

10 South Rooftop Bar & Grill is exactly what it sounds like: a rooftop grill with a full bar and an incredible view of the Mississippi River.

THINGS TO DO IN VICKSBURG, MS

The historical significance of Vicksburg, Mississippi allows for plenty of paranormal activity. In my short weekend stay, I chased down as much of that activity as possible.

I also managed to stop into some other fascinating places that were well worth my time.

HAUNTED VICKSBURG GHOST TOUR

The Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Tour is a leisurely stroll through Vicksburg’s oldest and most haunted neighborhood.

Haunted tours are offered on Friday, Saturday, & Sunday nights at 7 and 8:30pm. Tickets are $25  and kids under 5 they are free. The neighborhood is full of beautiful homes, gardens, and churches, but it was the restless spirits we were focused on during this tour!

MCRAVEN HOUSE

The McRaven Tour Home is considered the “Most Haunted House in Mississippi,” as well as the “Time Capsule of the South.” McRaven offers 3 different tours: Historic, Haunted, and a Combination tour.

VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK

Home to Vicksburg National Military Park, this is the 2nd largest military park in the United States. During the civil war, both sides agreed that wining Vicksburg was vital to winning the war.

One of the largest Civil War battles was fought on this land.

Today you can walk, bike or drive the park, visit the monuments erected by states to honor their fallen and learn about the turning point of the war. 

For a more in-depth experience hire tour guide, Morgan (the same Morgan that leads the Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Tours) . He’ll make multiple stops throughout the park and share stories about the historical significance of each stop.

If you plan on visiting the park a guided tour is definitely the way to go for a fully 

VICKSBURG CEMETERIES

Vicksburg National Cemetery has 116 acres that hold the remains of more Civil War Union soldiers than any other cemetery in the nation.

17,000 Union soldiers have been laid to rest here, more than half of which have nothing more than a number on their grave marker.

The Cedar Hill Cemetery is where Confederate soldiers of the Civil War were buried. It is known as “Soldier’s Rest,” and is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries still in use in the United States.

DOUGLAS THE CAMEL TOMBSTONE

Within Cedar Hill Cemetery, a headstone pays homage to a special kind of Confederate soldier named Old Douglas. He was a beloved camel of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry, Company A, known as “The Camel Regiment.”

He was a one hump camel who carried whatever his regiment needed him to. He paid the ultimate price on June 27th, 1863 when he wandered too far from his post and was shot down by a sharpshooter.

Legend has it, he continued to help his fellow soldiers by being a source of much-needed sustenance.

OLD COURT HOUSE MUSEUM

The Old Court House Museum in Vicksburg holds thousands of artifacts. You’ll find the Confederate flag that was never surrendered, an original Teddy Bear given to a local child by Teddy Roosevelt himself, and so much more.

The courthouse is one of the most historic structures in Vicksburg, and it has hosted Ulysses S. Grant, Booker T. Washington, and other household historical names.
