Sometimes there isn’t enough time for a long weekend at a destination and if you’d rather see a little bit of an area versus nothing at all this is for you. Old Town Alexandria is the nation’s third oldest locally designated historic district.

There are more than 200 independent restaurants and boutiques alongside intimate historic museums and special events.

Note: Alexandria is a short 30 minute drive from Washington DC. For easy access and to save the hassle of driving hop on the water taxi.

Fun Things To Do In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Visit the Waterfront Parks on the Scenic Potomac River

A few miles away from historic Old Town Alexandria you’ll find Jones Point Lighthouse at Jones Point Park.

The Jones Point Lighthouse is one of the last riverine lighthouses in the country and the only one still standing in the Chesapeake Bay area. 

Around the lighthouse you’ll find a few historic boundary markers for state lines.

The lighthouse is a short walk from the parking area.

Pass under the bridge, walk along the Potomac River and you’ll come to the lighthouse. It’s well worth visiting.

Walk the Quaint Historic Streets

King Street Mile is considered one of the great streets of America and is the heart of Old Town.

Here you’ll find centuries-old architecture and many independently owned restaurants and boutiques.

Queen Street is home to the cobalt-blue Spite House, America’s skinniest historic home.

It’s an entire 7-feet wide. Pose with arms wide in front of the doorway on the 500 block of Queen Street.This street is full of one lovely row house after another. 

Prince Street takes you back in time as you wander down the cobblestone street with its arched tree canopy

Explore the Art Scene

In the neighborhood of Del Ray, stroll by murals capturing Alexandrian’s history, such as the old St. Asaph Racetrack on Cheesetique’s “postcard” painting, by Chad Brady.

This is an easy walk and lets you enjoy the murals up close.

Find a souvenir or three at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. This old munitions factory turned art center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. 

You’ll find 82 artist studios where you can watch the creative process and ask questions and, most importantly, purchase original work for your own collection.

Absorb Some Alexandria History

The George Washington National Masonic Memorial is just one of many historic sites in the area. However, since we’re keeping our list short I’m only including two historic sites and one tour. 

Why this one? Well, the architecture of this historic building really draws me.

Sadly, it wasn’t open when I visited, but I would love to explore the inside and maybe go to the top of the tower. I don’t even know if that’s ever an option but I bet it has epic views.

Harry Potter fans will want to visit the historic Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum.

I would be remiss to not tell you that ghost tours take place daily with tickets available at the visitor center.

Tours were sold out during our visit, but I can only imagine the haunted stories you’ll hear in this area!

Where to Eat and Stay in Old Town Alexandria

Dinner at the Majestic Cafe will not disappoint. The historic fixture has been on King Street since 1932.

Simply look for the neon signs as you stroll along King Street and you’ll find the Majestic. Inside you’ll find a lush art deco atmosphere resplendent with rich jewel-tones. 

I started with the Heirloom Tomato Panzanelle, which includes strawberries and red onions. I had the hanger steak for my entree. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked.

Sadly, there wasn’t room left for dessert, but I’m sure that would have been just as tasty.

The Hotel Indigo is the perfect place to stay for the night. Located close to the river in the historic district and walking distance to everything Old Town has to offer. 

Plus, practically right across the street you’ll find Cafe du Soleil for your morning coffee fix!

But it’s the more than 30 independently owned local restaurants that have put this destination on the map for foodies like myself. It’s been recognized as the number one “Best Small Town Food Scene” in 2019 and 2020 by USA Today.

Abingdon’s historic downtown charm adds to any visit. But the amazing dining options take a visit to a whole new level.

After a ride along the world-class Virginia Creeper Trail or before a performance at the legendary Barter Theatre, there are plenty of food destinations nearby. You’ll find casual outdoor options, elegant, white tablecloth dining rooms, and settings filled with history and legend throughout downtown.

Long Time Favorites

While new places in town are drawing attention, the old favorites are always popular. An evening at The Tavern is a tradition for many. Located in Abingdon’s oldest building, built in 1779, the atmosphere both inside and on the courtyard are unique. The diverse menu, extensive beer and wine list, and full bar offer something for everyone.

Another local favorite, Rain, is an eclectic spot with an extensive menu and artsy atmosphere. From soups, seafood, and steaks to distinctive drinks and desserts, the menu is both creative and delicious.

Music on the Side

Another one-of-a-kind spot is Bone Fire Smokehouse & Musictorium. It is popular for both outstanding food and amazing music. This smokehouse and restaurant is located in an old hardware store. It serves succulent smoked meats and “Southern high country sides” while showcasing original music from local and regional artists.

Luke’s Cafe features fresh food in an art-and-music-inspired casual setting. The menu is filled with salads, sandwiches, and a full dinner menu, all with an artistic flair.

Fresh, Fun Flavor

The Girl & The Raven is a new addition to the local food scene. The cafe features dishes created from regionally sourced ingredients. Pair a dish with a premium craft coffee, roasted in small batches, using ethically sourced beans.

At Jack’s 128 Pecan, they pride themselves on both taste and service. They serve unique twists on popular sandwiches, special dinner entrees, and house-made desserts. The friendly, quirky atmosphere enhances your visit.

Specialty Galore

Abingdon’s tasty options also include beverages, of course! In downtown’s The Spring House, there is a trio of tastes to be enjoyed. Wolf Hills Coffee, Tumbling Creek Cider Company, and Appalachian Teas & Botanicals all offer specially curated beverage menus.

Additionally, you’ll find local shops featuring olive oils, wines, cheeses, specialty meats, and more.

There is so much to explore and enjoy in Abingdon. The culinary scene is a vital part of the experience. There are also plenty of lodging options, including the historic Martha Washington Inn and Spa.

Petals Wine Bar

I dined at Petals for the first time earlier this year and I’m thrilled to add it to the best places to eat in Wytheville list. Petals serves up excellent food, good service and house-made desserts, oh my. Enjoy gourmet grilled paninis, salads and cheese boards made with the freshest ingredients.

Be sure to check their Facebook page for special events including live music. Located off Main Street in Petals Florist.

Ghetti’s Cafe

Get your NY Bagel fix at Ghetti’s. Offering up a variety of bagels from plain to savory and sweet. Additionally, there are a number of flavored cream cheeses on the menu. They serve BlackLine Coffee, which is so good.

This is a great place to grab a quick breakfast to go before heading out to climb the Big Walker Lookout tower.

Grayson Restaurant

This locally owned and operated restaurant offers up home-cooked southern-style meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner as well as great service. The diner totally gives off the vibe of being right at home. And as a great bonus, breakfast is served all day. 

Crossroads Social House

This is a full entertainment complex that not only has great food and drinks, but is also a great spot to burn off some excess energy and have so much fun. This is a great place to kick back, have some great food and bowl and play billiards and darts. There’s also a really nice arcade room to let the kid in you have some fun. 

If you’re in town during a big game, they have two areas complete with large tv’s and comfy seating for small groups you can reserve. Open 7 days a week, Crossroads also features a full-service restaurant and bar with a seasonal outdoor patio area.

Log House 1776 Restaurant

The vibe of the Log House 1776 restaurant is hard to describe with its maze of dining rooms, nooks, crannies, gift shops and resident bunnies and doves. It is one of the oldest remaining structures in Wytheville with portions of the building dating to 1776, its eclectic charm and delicious food make it a must for anyone visiting the area.   

This is easily one of my favorite places to dine when I’m in Wytheville. Be sure the visit the gift shops and gardens before or after dinner.

Skeeter’s World Famous Hot Dogs

Skip the fast food chains and head over to Skeeters Hot Dogs in downtown Wytheville on Main Street. Established in 1925 and considered World Famous, this is one of Virginia’s oldest continuously operating restaurants. 

When you step into Skeeter’s it is a bit like taking a step back in time. To your right is a vintage lunch counter counter that faces the grill and to the left a scattering of tables which are almost always full. This joint is hoppin’ from open to close serving up red dogs, house-made hot dog chili, and coleslaw.

High Plains Barbecue

Specializing in slow-smoked meats and homemade sides, this laid back establishment is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy authentic Southern-style BBQ.

If you’re in Wytheville on a Saturday head over for lunch and grab their brisket burnt ends. Remember, like most great BBQ places once they sell out they sell out so I recommend getting there when they open so you’re not disappointed.

Peking Chinese Restaurant

I love finding a good Chinese restaurant and Peking does not disappoint. Peking has plentiful seating for everyone which is good because this a favorite spot for locals and travelers alike .

This ornately decorated building is adorned with red lanterns & dark woods which gives off a warm vibe. You’ll be warmly greeted by a hostess when you step inside and, with any luck, you’ll be seated at one of the comfortable red leather booths that line the wall. There is a great menu the offers up familiar fare.

Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre

In a town of less than 10,000 you don’t often find a dinner theater, but Wytheville likes keeping things unique and the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre does not disappoint. This family owned and operated German-themed dinner theatre is an all-encompassing entertainment venue producing musicals, plays, concerts, and other special events.

You’ll enjoy a three-course meal cooked and plated in our kitchen and served at the table by a dedicated waitstaff. After dinner the show begins. The dinner theatre has a rotating schedule of shows. I’m kind of hoping I can get back for the production of If I Could Turn Back Time, a tribute to the 80s. Yes, please!!!

Graze on Main

Located in the historic Bolling Wilson Hotel, Graze on Main. They are serving up some of the best food with southern twist on some favorites; like pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, and finely prepared steak, daily seafood specials, chicken and salmon.

Offering a casual but elegant dining environment, the décor features wood floors, luxurious fabrics, comfortable seating, unique art, and lighting. You can choose to dine indoors or enjoy the outdoor seating area. If you don’t have time time for dinner be sure to at least grab one of the specialty cocktails at the fabulous bar OR head up to the Perch Rooftop bar to enjoy a cocktail with a view.

5 Things To Do in Arlington, Virginia

Explore Public Art

Stroll around Arlington’s Rosslyn neighborhood and discover a variety of public art within one square mile. There are 14 art installations in this area, but overall Arlington has 60 works of art in their permanent collection. Even if you don’t have time to find all the art make sure you enjoy a least a few of them.

Note, check with Visit Arlington as guided walking tours are sometimes offered.

These are some of my favorites:

Liquid Pixels (1801 N Lynn St.)- Located on the side of a building there are six panels covered with 630,000 one-inch disks that move freely in the wind. It really looks like water cascading down the side of the building.

Anna and David (1525 Wilson Blvd) – Brightly painted 3-story high sculptures are a fun addition to Wilson Blvd.

Cupid’s Garden (Wilson Blvd & Clarendon Blvd. between Oak St. & Nash St.) – This one was my absolute favorite. Located at a busy intersection the arrows seem to be directing the never ending traffic.

Arlington County Fire Department – Located on Wilson Blvd is this incredible torch sculpture. I didn’t find any information on the Arlington Public Art Walking Tour about it, but feel it’s worth a stop to see.

Someone’s Shot of Whiskey – I spotted this on the walk back to my car. If memory serves me right it was on N. Lynn St. between Wilson and 19th St. Absolutely adore it, mostly because that is one of my favorite quotes.

Grab lunch at Open Road

After you finish exploring the public art scene grab a table at Open Road. It’s a great place for lunch and/or cocktails.

I’m always on the hunt for a good salad and Open Road did not disappoint. It was exactly the energy I needed for the next adventure. The outdoor seating was perfect as we were able to watch planes fly overhead on their approach to the airport.

Take A Bike Ride Along the Mount Vernon Trail

After your delicious lunch, grab a bike at Capital Share Bike Rental, located in the same outdoor area as Open Road.  Simply download the app, enter your credit card information, follow the instructions, and you’ll be off. Try to find a bike with a basket to toss your purse, water bottle and/or backpack into.

The entrance to the Mount Vernon trail is just a couple of blocks away and downhill. Once you are on the trail you’ll enjoy a leisurely ride along the Potomac River. You’ll pass by sculptures, green spaces, picnic areas, across wooden bridges and enjoy views of our nation’s capital and its iconic landmarks. You can bike as much or as little of the trail as you’d like. The bike rental is charged by the hour.

We ode our bikes back to the parking lot for the Mount Vernon trail where there is another Capital Bikeshare location.  Our walk back to the car was uphill so returning our bikes at a different location made the most sense for us. I think our total for this outing was around $10 per person, so totally worth it.

Visit the brand new Air Force Memorial

We arrived just as it started to rain and it wasn’t long before the skies really opened up.  The three stainless steel spires reach a height of 402 feet above sea-level and it’s impressive to see up close. We weren’t able to visit for long, but I’m so glad we went.

Watch planes land at Ronald Reagan National Airport from Gravelly Point Park

Once you stand under a massive passenger plane as it is coming in for a landing it gives you a whole new appreciation for pilots. Honestly, I didn’t think I would enjoy this as much as I did. I could have spent hours watching the planes land.

You stand pretty much at the end of the landing strip. The planes are so close to the ground when they go overhead. It’s amazing and one of the best things to do when you’re in Arlington! This is a popular spot, but there is plenty of parking at Gravelly Point Park or you can ride your bike along the Mt Vernon trail to the park.

History, culture and the holidays all collide to make the season even more special for the entire family.

Almost everyone traveling from the Midwest to the beaches of the southeast coast will pass through here, but many fail to stop and explore this amazing destination.

I’ve visited Wytheville a couple times now and I keep wanting to go back! There is so much to explore, and the mountain views are incredibly gorgeous.

I’ve put together a list of ten things to do when you visit whether its for a day, a weekend, or a week. After you get a taste of this unique mountain town you’ll want to visit again and again.

17 Absolute MUST Things You Have To Do In Wytheville in Southwest Virginia + Where to Stay

1. Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum

As one of only eight historic sites across the country dedicated to the interpretation of a First Lady, the museum tells the story of Wytheville native Edith Bolling Wilson.

She was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson, and played a pivotal role in the White House at an important moment during World War I.

What you might miss reading on museum placards and why it’s so important to have a docent give the tour is that Edith Bolling Wilson was a badass! 

Widowed fairly young, she took over her husband’s jewelry business and ran it very successfully.

Then, one day, after having tea with the President (arranged through mutual friends), the widowed Ms. Bolling started dating President Wilson. I’m assuming she took some heat for that (cause y’all know people put her on blast even back then).

She was the first female in the DC area to own and operate an electric car and, my favorite fact about her, she drank bourbon daily.

Oh, and she refused the President’s first marriage proposal. I do love stories of independent women. And in some utter cuteness, #relationshipgoals news, while the President was courting her he wrote her daily love letters and sent frequently sent her orchids, her favorite flower. #RelationshipGoals

There’s also some that claim her as America’s first acting female President. It’s believed that she took over many of the behind the scenes tasks to make sure her ailing husband remained stress-free. 

I mean, she’s kind of my new hero and I learned so much about her. A must-visit when you are in Wytheville and is worth an hour of your time.

A couple books to read if you’re interested in learning more about her: My Memoir by Edith Boling Wilson (you’ll probably need to find this gem at a local library or, if you’re lucky, a used bookstore) and President in Love: The Courtship Letters of Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Wilson

2. Crossroads Social House

Wytheville’s newest attraction, Crossroads Social House is a family entertainment center with 14 lanes for bowling, a laser tag arena, multiple party rooms, an arcade, a billiards and darts area and a trampoline jump zone.

This is a great place to kick back, have some great food and bowl and play billiards and darts. There’s also a really nice arcade room to let the kid in you have some fun. 

If you’re in town during a big game, they have two areas complete with large tv’s and comfy seating for small groups you can reserve.

Open 7 days a week, Crossroads also features a full-service restaurant and bar with a seasonal outdoor patio area.

3. Thomas J. Boyd Museum 

Honoring Thomas Jefferson Boyd, the “Father of Wytheville,” the Boyd Museum focuses on local history, including local craftsmen, abundant natural resources and the area’s1950 polio epidemic, called the “Summer Without Children.”

There are a couple really interesting, in my opinion, exhibits you’ll want to stop in and see. The first is the above mentioned “Summer Without Children.” It tells the story of the polio epidemic, and the lengths locals went to to ensure the safety of the community.

A story shared with me and one that just intrigues me so much is that of a mom who filled a room in her house, known today as Rock Hall, with sand so the kids could play without being outside It’s said that the family didn’t leave the house for a very extended period and all survived the pandemic.

I have so many questions–where does one find enough sand to fill a room, was she sweeping up sand every day, all day long, did the sand have to be replenished/replaced, how much sand does it actually take to fill a room. I could go on and on. That being said, I love the ingenuity of a mom finding a way to stay sane during a crazy time.

Another exhibit that’s really cool is the indoor beehive. As an avid gardener and wannabe beekeeper, I thought this was fascinating.

And maybe my favorite badass female story from the museum is that of Molly Tynes who we’ve never heard of because, if I had to guess, she’s female. But she’s basically the female version of  Paul Revere.

She rode forty-four miles, on horseback, at night, over four mountains, telling everyone along the way “The Yankees are coming in the morning,” and basically saved the town, railroad, and mines.

Wytheville is full of badass women stories…I love it here!

4. Historic Millwald Theatre 

This 1928 theatre had fallen into some serious disrepair and hadn’t operated as a full-time theater for many years. All that changed when they reopened the fully renovated theater in 2022

The theatre is bringing arts and culture events to the 515-seat auditorium with both live and filmed events. 

From comedians to concerts to classic films and so much more. Definitely try to grab a show while you’re in town.

5. Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre 

In a town of less than 10,000 you don’t often find a dinner theater, but Wytheville likes keeping things unique and the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre does not disappoint.

All the theatre productions are musicals and I’m here for it. The minute I catch wind they are doing a production of Mama Mia I’m buying the tickets and making the drive.

Our four-course meal was served and enjoyed while we relaxed in the comfort of the theatre. Plates were cleared right before the production began.

I’ve been able to see “The Sound of Music” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and loved both.

6. West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard

After a fun packed day take some time to unwind at West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard.

With award-winning wines, this beautiful fourth-generation family homestead is welcoming and encourages guests to stay away and enjoy a glass or two of wine and the ambiance. 

Absolutely try the Galena Creek Peach wine. It’s the perfect refreshing drink on a hot summer day.

There were also a number of red wines I enjoyed and if I hadn’t flown, I would have taken a number of bottles home with me.

Instead, I just brought home the Galena Creek Peach for a girlfriend’s brunch event.

7. 1870 Octagon Mansion History Museum/Gallery

This right here was another surprising find for me. The construction for this unique building started way back in 1866 by a doctor and was then sold to a minister before completion in 1874.

Side wings were then added to the house in the 1890s by the next owner and is how you’ll see the layout of the house today.

On display is a private life-time collection of John Cushman who started collecting when he was just 5 years old.

The displays are mostly Civil War memorabilia, but there are a few other world conflicts represented.

The different rooms in the mansion each house a specific collection with the most interesting the uniform room. 

While the historical items in the home are interesting and worth the stop it’s the hauntings of the building that seriously caught my attention.

It’s believed that numerous spirits call this mansion home, and you’ll find paranormal investigators in the building almost every weekend. I was able to join a group and I’ll have a story on that soon!

Additionally, the owners, John and Debbie, host “Dinner with a Ghost” events in the mansion dining room. The room is resplendent with decor and table settings complete with a royal table set just for the ghosts.

8. Big Walker Lookout 

It’s a twisty and curvy drive to the top of the mountain and Big Walker Lookout but it’s completely worth it.

The views are incredible from the parking lot, but from the top of the tower they are jaw-dropping stunning.

You used to be able to see five states from the top of the tower and still happens on occasion, but you can definitely see  Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

If it’s an absolute pristine clear day you might be able to see Kentucky and Tennessee as well.

If you visit on a weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy the musical stylings of regional musicians and browse artisans booths. You’ll find artists and musicians there every weekend from May to October.

Absolutely do not leave without getting an ice cream cone.

9. Fort Chiswell Animal Park 

What is one to do when they have a love for animals and want to share that joy with others? Well, they open a park, of course. This interactive animal park is home to animals from six continents, most of who freely roam the abundant 45-acre parcel of land. 

A safari bus slowly moves guests around the property, so they have a chance to see the animals up close and feed them if they’d like.

This is a great opportunity to see animals that you wouldn’t see in the wild in America. I’m not sure I’ll ever make it to Africa to see some of these animals so seeing them here is incredible. 

This is a great family outing. I was on the bus with two families and the young kids were simply thrilled to see, feed, and in some cases, touch these animals.

10. Beagle Ridge Herb Farm 

Love lavender? This is the place for you. Although Beagle Ridge is so much more than just lavender its definitely the star of the show. The lavender gardens are gorgeous and a life goal. 

Beyond the lavender there are a number of display gardens to walk through. Seriously, if my gardens looked half as good as these I’d be thrilled. 

If you want to learn more about growing lavender or even starting a lavender farm this is the place to learn. The farm offers Lavender Academy and teaches everything from growing to selling.

There is no gatekeeping of information, and you’ll walk away with all the knowledge you need to be successful.

Be sure to browse the selection of herbs and lavender for sale to take a piece of Wytheville home with you to plant in your garden.

11. Bike New River Trail State Park

The New River Trail State Park is a 57.7-mile rail trail and state park, extending from the trail’s northeastern terminus in Pulaski to its southern terminus in Galax.

Stop by the New River State Park campground store in Max Meadows and rent a bike to explore part or all of the New River Trail.

The trail is an easy, scenic pedal along the river.

If you brought your own bike there are a number of places to get on the trail. There is a great online trail map to help you pick part of the trail to explore.

12. Shot Tower

This is a fun piece of history to visit. Located a mile from the New River State Park campground along the trail (an easy 1 mile bike ride) or accessible by car.

“Overlooking the New River, Shot Tower was built more than 200 years ago to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. Guests may ascend the tower, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.”- https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/shot-tower

The shot tower is open every weekend and generally has a docent on site to share the history of the tower.

Try to visit when there is a docent onsite because you will learn so much about the history of the shot tower.

The construction alone is impressive, but whoever figured out how to make ammunition this way is genius.

Admission to the tower is free, however the daily parking fee applies.

13. Wytheville’s Smallest Church

This is a fun roadside attraction stop!

Located alongside I-81/77, it’s located on a service road, but is easy to visit. Most map apps will get you there easy enough.

The 12×16-foot chapel was built by volunteers in 2010.

14. Find the “LOVE” in Wytheville

Virginia is famous for their “LOVE” and Wytheville does not disappoint with three “LOVE” signs. 

The LOVE sign at Big Walker Lookout is one of my faves with its bigfoot cutout and those views!!!

15. Chautauqua Festival

Held in June complete with a Hot Air Balloon “glow”, artisan show, festival foods and so much more. w festival.

16. Vintage Baseball Games

Each summer you’ll find community members gather, some to play and some to watch, as vintage baseball is played locally and, in a few cases, in neighboring communities.

It’s interesting to see how baseball started compared to where it is today.

17. Wytheville Farmers Market

Absolutely go to the market! 

Open year round you can grab breakfast, pick up homemade breads, bakery items, jams, salsas and so much more.

Fresh vegetables and fruit vary throughout the growing season. 

TWO UNIQUE PLACES TO STAY IN WYTHEVILLE

Bolling Wilson Hotel

I loved returning to my room each night and climbing into the most comfortable hotel bed ever at this beautiful boutque hotel.

As part of the Ascend Hotel Collection, the hotel offers 30 guest rooms, an in-house Graze on Main restaurant, a rooftop lounge with incredible mountain and downtown views, and a covered front porch complete with comfortable chairs to relax and watch the world go by.

Special touches throughout the hotel pay tribute to Edith Bolling Wilson, from large photos of orchids, the flower with which President Wilson so fervently courted her, to nods to both her grandmother’s canaries she cared for as a child and her later taste for fine bourbon.

Without hesitation I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the hotel is pet friendly!!!

Inn At Foster Falls

If you prefer something a little more secluded head over to the Inn at Foster Falls.

Located within New River Trail State Park, the Inn at Foster Falls is just steps away from the 57-mile New River Trail and the New River.

The original Foster Falls Hotel opened in 1888 by the Foster Falls Mining and Manufacturing Company. While the mining company was in business it served as a post office, store, meeting hall and boarding house.

After the mining company sold the building it was opened as an industrial school for women and eventually the building served as an orphanage until the early 60’s.

Eventually the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation took ownership of the building and began renovations in 2013.

Almost a decade later the building opened as the Inn at Foster Falls.

This 10 room boutique hotel is absolutely delightful. The rooms are simply beautiful and cozy.

Long porches overlook the country side and top notch amenities make this must stay.

WHAT TO DO IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

Monticello Artisan Trail: A regional trail way that connects destinations including craft artisan studios, galleries, agri-artisan farms, markets, local restaurants, lodging, and area points of interest in Albemarle and Nelson Counties and the City of Charlottesville.

Monticello: Home of the third president of the United States this is considered to be one of Thomas Jefferson’s architectural masterpieces. Gorgeous home and grounds. A must visit when you are in Charlottesville.

University of Virginia Historical Tours: This World Heritage Site offers daily tours. Designed by Thomas Jefferson the rotunda and lawn are simply gorgeous. The dome of the rotunda is an architectural beauty and the history of the building is very interesting.

Miche Tavern: A lodging and dining establishment that has been serving travelers for over 200 years. Miche Tavern is located at the bottom of the mountain that Monticello sits atop.

Carter’s Mountain: you’ll want to take the twisty, winding road to the top for some incredible views. There are orchards and a farm market at the top.

Ghost & Mystery Walking Tour: Hear the tale of the mayor and his wife and try to solve the crime 1904 style.

Ash Lawn-Highland: James Monroe’s home is a simple home located in a wonderful spot. The grounds are lovely to walk around and the vegetable garden is amazing.

Charlottesville Historic Downtown Mall: This fun pedestrian mall is a brick “street” lined with over 150 fabulous and unique shops, restaurants and theaters.

The Great Outdoors–There’s hiking, disc golf, and horseback riding, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. There’s even hot air ballooning, high ropes courses, and skydiving if you prefer your adventures sky-high.

Keswick Spa: Swedish massage was so relaxing and I’m pretty sure I may have dozed off for a bit. The tranquility room at the spa came complete with tea, water, and, of course, some champagne and chocolates. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

Charlottesville offers everything from casual to fine dining and I’ve tried a range of their options. 

One of the best things about dining in Charlottesville is that so many of the restaurants are tapped into the farm to table movement and almost every place you go will be serving in-season, farm fresh, made from scratch foods.

Clifton Inn: Make arrangements to sit at the chef’s table and watch as each of your courses are crafted and immediately served. I had a scallop wonton in a white truffle foam that wasa delish!

Red pump kitchen: A rustic Italian restaurant located on the downtown mall. Cozy atmosphere, beautiful bar, comfy seating and a pass through window that allows peeks into the kitchen all lend itself to the start of a great meal.

Whiskey Jar: A restaurant after my own heart. The list of whiskey, bourbon, and scotch available here is extensive and very impressive. You can also enjoy a whiskey flight to go with your meal.

Greenhouse Cafe: Located in Crozet they serve up some great sandwiches and salads. Order to go and take to Starr Hill Brewery and enjoy your meal with a pint.

Crozet Pizza: Nominated as the best pizza in the World. Yes, the world! Defintiely worth a visit.

Castle Hill Cidery: After trying their numerous varieties I decided that my favorite was the Levity.

Keswick Vineyards: The 2014 Cabernet Franc Estate Reserve was selected in 2016 as the best wine in the state and after you taste it you’ll know why.

Starr Hill Brewery: Love The Love, but the Coffee IPA was a really close second.

Albemarle Cider Works: Twelve cider varieties to try you’ll have a hard time picking a fave!

WHERE TO STAY IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

Residence Inn-Downtown: Be sure to book an extra large 2-bedroom suite. It has plenty of room to enjoy each others company PLUS a full kitchen.It’s located just off the downtown mall so there are plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby.

Clifton Inn: My room, the Thomas Jefferson, was at the top of the stairs. I was delighted to find a four poster bed, fireplace and a decanter of wine in my room. Yes, wine is included in every room. There is also complimentary bottled water as well.

Graduate Hotel: Located directly across from the UVA campus. It has a mashup of decorating styles and includes a feel of school, hunt club and fishing. So fun!

Dinsmore House B&B: The lodgings are comfortable and the staff makes sure that your stay is very comfortable. Breakfast each morning is delicious and provides a great start to your day.

Note: My visit was part of my hosted visit to Shenandoah Valley.

Arriving at Shenandoah Caverns you’ll find a gift shop, cafe, the smallest post office, and Main Street of Yesteryear.

The post office is indeed very small, but it is still an operating post office. Simply ring a bell on the counter and an employee will be happy to assist you. I should have bought something to mail from the post office just for the postmark. 🙂

 After you buy your cavern tour tickets take a moment to visit the gift shop while you are waiting and be sure to use the restroom before heading out on your tour.

To start your tour you’ll take an elevator to the cavern floor. Yes, an elevator. It’s the only cavern in the state of Virginia with an elevator making it very accessible for all levels of ability.

An hour-long tour takes you on a one-mile stroll along well-maintained walkways to see jaw-dropping formations like diamond cascades, rainbow lake, bacon formations (yes, bacon!!!), giants room and so much more.

The tour weaves and wanders through seventeen different rooms and provides a surprise discovery around each turn.

Our guide had worked at the cavern for years and was very knowledgeable about the formations, the age of the cavern, what critters live in the caverns (the answer might surprise you).

After asking for permission from the group, they will show you complete cavern darkness. Let’s just say its DARK! I held my hand in front of my face and couldn’t see it.

After you finish your tour of the caverns make sure you stop by Main Street of Yesteryear. This is a display of antique department store windows from the 1940s and 50s and is very interesting.

A Short List of Things To Do in Fairfax County, Virginia

George Washington’s Mount Vernon

If you only have time to do one thing be sure to visit Mount Vernon. This is America’s most visited historic home with good reason.

It’s the home to the first President of the United States and is an incredible site with gardens, a working farm, outbuilding.

 A riverfront mansion that is a stones throw from the banks of the Potomac River, and interactive experiences and exhibits at the museum and educational center. 

Plan to spend at least half a day touring the home, walking the grounds (there are a number of trails) and exploring the museum and educational center. 

The museum is very well done and one of the best I’ve come across in quite a few years. Be sure to watch the 4D movie and engage in the interactive displays.

Note, if you like to visit unique places for the holidays Mount Vernon offers a number of special events.

Workhouse Arts Center and the Lucy Burns Museum

The Workhouse Arts Center is housed in the former Lorton Prison which has been repurposed and is being reused as an incredible arts center.

One cool fact about Workhouse Arts Center is that it’s the largest reuse project in the US and is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Throughout the year there are 300 performances, 100 visual arts exhibits across 12 gallery spaces, and 800 classes in visual arts, performing arts, and culinary arts.

On site you’ll find professional studios for 70 artists. The art studios are open for public visits Wed-Sat from 11-6 and Sun 12-5.

In the Lucy Burns Museum, you’ll visit one of the few museums in the country that honors the story of the imprisonment of the women suffragists as well as a brief history of Lorton Prison.

The Perch at Capital One Center

This brand news(fall 2021) 1.2-acre skypark is located 11 stories up on the rooftop of the Capital One Center. The skypark is home to a sculpture garden, amphitheater, outdoor games, and even a dog park!

The Capital One Center is also home to Capital One Hall which brings in world renowned acts from concerts to broadway and more.

While you’re visiting The Perch be sure to grab a beer and a bite to eat at the Starr Hill Biergarten.

Great Falls Park

I absolutely did not expect to find these incredible waterfalls and beautiful hiking trails in such an urban area. This is really one of the many national parks that you should visit.

Here you’ll see the Potomac River fall over a series of steep, jagged rocks as it’s forced through the narrow Mather Gorge. 

As you hike the trails be sure to learn about the history of the Patowmack Canal, we also found the ghost town of Matildaville, which is located along the Matildaville Trail, here you’ll see skeletal remains of buildings from a long ago era.

Grab a coffee from a local coffee shop (see list below) or pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the many picnic areas. Be sure to stop in the visitor center for more information about the park. 

Its hard to believe but this 800-acre park is only 15 miles from the nation’s capital.

Craft Chocolate Tasting & Tour at River Sea Chocolate Factory

River Sea Chocolate Factory is such an awesome experience, we’ve all heard of beer tastings or wine tastings, but what about a delicious chocolate tasting? 

That’s exactly what you can enjoy at River-Sea Chocolate Factory.

This bean to bar chocolate shop offers build-a-bar classes, chocolate making demos, and chocolate tasting experiences. 

Don’t be deterred by it’s location. It’s a little hard to find at first as it’s located in an office-style type building behind a brewery. However, once you know you know and it will so be worth it.

The owners, Krissee & Mariano D’Aguilar, ship in fresh cocoa beans and roast them onsite to create incredibly delicious artisan chocolate bars.

During our chocolate tasting we learned about the chocolate creation process and tasted 5 different types of chocolate. If you know me, you’ll know that I’m not really a big fan of chocolate and usually always avoid it.

I think I’ve been trying the wrong chocolates all these years. I actually really liked the River-Sea chocolates, even the dark chocolate, which was so surprising to me. Thank goodness they ship!

Mount Vernon Inn

Before or after your visit to Mount Vernon stop in the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant for a delicious bite to eat. A relaxing atmosphere welcomes you and incredible food awaits. 

If you enjoy whiskey you’ll want to try the whiskey from George Washington’s Distillery. It’s available for purchase at the on-site gift store or you can visit the distillery that is located about a mile away.

The Wren

Located in the stunning Watermark Hotel next to the Capital One Center is the Japanese-American, small plates restaurant, The Wren.

We tried a variety of dishes and nothing disappointed. From the cocktails to the small plates you won’t go wrong with your choices.

Local Coffee Shops:

—Katie’s Coffee House – this one is nearest to Great Falls National Park

—The Old Brogue – serving up illy coffees, lattes, teas, and fresh baked goods.

—Lake Anne Coffee House – tucked away at Lake Anne Plaza this family-run spot serves up a full menu with
locally sourced coffee beans

—Weird Brothers Coffee – One of Fairfax County’s only coffee roasters, serving up pour-overs, cold brews, espresso drinks, and more as well as a collection of products and goods from other local makers in the area.

Archer Hotel Tysons

The Archer Hotel Tysons is one of the newest boutique property located in Tysons. It has an elegant industrial vibe with sophistication and incredible hospitality. 

Arriving at the front of the hotel I’m greeted by the valet who whisks my car away while a door man holds the door to the lobby for me.

The lobby is warm and welcoming with guest service employees at the ready to check me into my room and guide me through all the things I may want to know about the hotel.

Offers of help with my luggage are declined as I only have a small overnight tote bag and backpack. I do love that it’s an option though.

Arriving to my room, I’m welcomed by a cozy interior that includes chandeliers, a purple couch (swoon), luxe bedding, slippers and a treat.

I’m now convinced that all hotel rooms should come with chandeliers and purple couches. I felt complete spoiled and I loved it.

Sadly, I was only able to enjoy the hotel a couple hours.

I arrived very late in the evening and left early the next morning. Someday, I hope to be in a hotel long enough to enjoy the amenities.

The Archer does have a lovely looking bar that I recommend for a nightcap.

I’m going to help you narrow down your choices.  If you are an easy drive from Shenandoah Valley, VA you need to go there and, more importantly, I’m sharing how to have the best weekend getaway there.

If you don’t know already, Virginia is simply stunning. The rolling mountains are like eye-candy. Massanutten Mountain is beautiful year round.

Hiking, or at least driving up the mountain at Shenandoah National Park is an obvious choice of activity while visiting the Valley. But that is not all there is to do around this town.

Use this list to plan your next visit to Virginia so you can take in all that Shenandoah Valley has to offer there is everything from museums and great food to camping and horseback riding. You’re going to fall in love.

WHAT TO DO IN SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Fort Valley Ranch

Enjoy unplugging and soaking in the gorgeous scenery in the saddle of a horse or in a covered, horse drawn wagon.

This is definitely the way to go if you want to get in some serious rest and relaxation.

Extend that unplugged feeling a few nights by spending a night or two in one of the bunkhouses.

Shenandoah County Historic Courthouse

Constructed in 1795, the Shenandoah County Historic Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of the Blue Ridge. It saw much activity during the civil war with troops from both sides leaving their marks with graffiti on interior walls.

Shenandoah Caverns

Find out what happened when two young boys discovered an underground world. Imagine their wonderment as you follow in their footsteps and hear stories of their candlelit adventures.

Walking through the caverns leads to some jaw-dropping moments. It’s hard to believe the grandeur under your feet when your topside. The hidden gems that lie beneath are well worth the visit.

Plus, when you visit Shenandoah Caverns you’ll also see the smallest working post office and will visit Main Street of Yesteryear,  a display of antique department store windows from the 1940s and 50s.

American Celebration on Parade

A 40,000 square foot museum, home to the finest collection of parade floats from inaugurals, rose bowls, and other celebratory parades in America. This place is so much fun to walk through.

Finally, a place to get up close and see how the famous parade float are made and how they work. The workmanship and time involved in each and every float is very impressive. Young and old alike will be fascinated by the display floats.

Route 11 Potato Chips

Started in 1992, Route 11 has been producing small batches of incredibly delicious chips. Now you can stop in to see where the magic happens.

Viewing windows give you a behind the scenes glimpse into how a potato turns into crisp goodness. See the process from start to finish as workers and machinery crank out batch after batch of yum! 

My absolute favorite chip is the Yukon Gold. Its a seasonal offering, starting in July until gone, so when you see them you’ll want to stock up!

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge

Below the bridge the North Fork of the Shenandoah River runs lazy and low, perfect for skipping rocks or wading in up to your ankles.

Shenandoah Downs

Get a behind the scenes tour meeting the jockeys, owners and members of the Virginia Equine Association and National Harness Racing Association.

Place your bets on a favorite horse and carriage team with complimentary vouchers for betting.

Strasburg Murals

Take a walking tour of the Strasburg Murals where world renowned artists have painted the town. The vastness of these paintings are both surprising and stunning. Each picture has a story to tell.

Shenandoah County Artisan Trail

Head over to the town of Tom’s Brook and enjoy these three artisan trail creatives:

• Laughing Orange Studio– Susie Wilburn specializes in wheel-thrown and highly decorative, functional pottery.
• Posey Thisisit Llama Farm– “How about some llama kisses?!” owner Joyce Hall will say with a big laugh. She will joyously show you around and introduce you to all of her big furry friends and their wool. She may even give you a sample viewing of the shearing or spinning processes.
• Wolfgang Neudorfer’s studio and woodshop– With the setting at the base of the Allegheny mountain range, it’s a perfect inspiration for his oil landscapes and woodworking.

Woodstock Café

The Seasonal menu changes monthly at this favorite restaurant amongst locals and visitors alike. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, they also offer dinner on Thursday nights, Sunday brunch and special events.

Woodstock Brewhouse

Local craft brewery within a historic, 1920’s era building. Once the home of a Casey Jones Denim factory, the Woodstock Brewhouse now serves as a local gathering spot. Enjoy live music every Thursday night.

Muse Vineyards

Shenandoah County’s newest vineyard is also the winner of the 2015 Governor’s Cup. The wines are made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate and are a deliberate expression of the Shenandoah Valley.

Enjoy this modern setting against the scenic backdrop of Massanutten Mountain and the Shenandoah River.

Joe’s Steakhouse

With restaurants now located throughout the Shenandoah Valley, Woodstock is home to the original Joe’s Steakhouse. The menu features unique recipes served alongside the best cuts of meats, fresh seafood and a variety of other fare.

North Mountain Vineyards

The second oldest vineyard and winery in Shenandoah County just celebrated their 35th Anniversary.
