This is a place where nature and vintage cars intermingle to create the world’s largest classic car junkyard and one of the most photogenic stops you’ll ever find.

Located a short jaunt off of I-75 and a little less than an hour north of Atlanta is this under appreciated roadside attraction that appeals to car lovers and photographers everywhere.

Pull up to the nondescript, ramshackle building and enter a colorful, nature-loving world.

Here you will find 6 miles of trails on 34 acres with 4,000+ cars. Beyond the cars, there are a plethora of oddities to be discovered.

The trails hold so much more than cars as you’ll find words of wisdom scratched onto pieces of metal and wood throughout your adventure.

Wander around the grounds and see what treasures you can discover. I only had a short amount of time to visit. I covered as much as I could but I know I missed so much more.

Old cars, trucks, buses, artwork, folk art, and so much more.

This is truly a unique attraction that you won’t want to miss.

TIPS FOR VISITING OLD CAR CITY USA

1. Visit during cooler months to avoid stifling heat and ticks.
2. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes.
3. Make sure your camera battery is fully charged.
4. If you are a car aficionado or just love finding unique photo opportunities allocate at least 2 hours to your visit.
5. Try to get a lay of the land before wandering around as it can be a bit of a maze once you begin to wander.
6. Old Car City USA is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9a-4p.
7. Do your research and check out images about Old Car City USA to get an idea of what you’ll find and what you’ll want to photograph.

Pro Tip: Inside the building be sure to take a peek upstairs to check out a massive styrofoam cup collection consisting of 1500+ cups that each have a unique hand-drawn design.

This collection is the result of 36 years of creating and collecting.

Admission starts at $20 with discounts offered for military and children under 13. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday 9a -4p, closed on Sunday and Monday.

The Pacific Northwest had been my siren song for so long and stepping foot on that soil was a balm to my soul. 

Our first task, pick up our Escape Campervan. Yes, part of the dream was to drive around Oregon in a decked out campervan, waking up in nature or to the sounds of the ocean and exploring. No hotels required. It was epic!

Renting the Escape Campervan was exactly the right decision!

The Escape Campervan is Surprisingly Affordable

When we first started planning our trip I quickly realized that a car rental was going to be crazy expensive. Add that to hotel costs and I started to hesitate on my decision to vacation in Oregon. 

I’d always made the assumption that a Campervan would far exceed my budget even though I’d always wanted to travel in one. So, instead of guessing, I jumped on the site, put in my info and was pleasantly surprised. 

There are a couple different campervan models. We went with the largest campervan, the Big Sur model, with a pick up and return in Portland. We added a bedding and kitchen kit (more on that later) as well as a couple of camp chairs.

All told, we paid around $1800 for 9 nights/10 days.

While it ended up only saving us a couple hundred dollars it was worth it for the experience.

It’s a vacation home and rental car in one

The campervan comes kitted out with a queen size bed, a camp stove and a small sink. For additional fees, we rented a kitchen kit and bedding kit from Escape Campervan.

The kitchen kit included pots, pans, plates, cups, and utensils and worked perfectly well for our road trip. We bought a pour over coffee maker because for us coffee is life and an absolute must.

A solar panel on the roof powered the refrigerator so we didn’t have to lug around a cooler and worry about our ice supply and keeping things cold.

The bedding kit was a sheet, light comforter, and two pillows. We traveled in September and the nights were cool and in some areas it was COLD. The bedding kit did not work for us and we wouldn’t rent it again. 

Instead, we stopped at a large box store and bought a heavy duty blanket, a 2-inch memory foam topper (because the bed was way more comfy with it) and an extra pillow. Our nights were much cozier after that investment.

Now that we know we can pack accordingly for our next trip.

It’s A Picnic Every Day

Because we had a kitchen with us we were able to picnic at some really lovely locations. We simply found a spot we liked and set about making lunch or dinner. Sometimes, we simply stopped to make a cup of coffee and enjoy the view.

No waiting in line for a table, no crazy expensive food cost, simply find a spot, open the back of the campervan, and cook up your next meal. 

If there is inclement weather the queen bed can be converted back to seating and the van table set up to work or dine at.

I know for some that eating out is part of the travel experience and while we did go out a couple times we really enjoyed the experience of spending our time outdoors for our meals.

Sleep Under the Stars

We, unfortunately, visited the PNW while the wild fires were raging through the region which meant a LOT of hazy, smoke filled days and nights. 

However, spending our evenings tucked in the campervan (I would say around the campfire, but those were banned during our visit except for one location), reading a book, and falling asleep to the sound of nature is everything. Waking up in the trees and quiet is seriously everything for us. 

We mostly stayed in National Forest and State Campgrounds

If you love camping this is the way to go. We are not RV people (a whole list of reasons why, but for us, it just doesn’t feel like camping), however, the campervan is a great compromise between a tent and an RV. 

Traveling In The Escape Campervan Is A Lot of Fun!

It is perfect for long road trips as we proved during our epic trip around Oregon. We picked up our Campervan in Portland and from there we explored as much of the state, from mountains to shore, as we could over 10 days and drove about 1100 miles. 

Picnicking with epic views of the ocean, sleeping tucked in the woods under the shelter of some of the tallest trees, and driving to waterfalls was all part of our adventure.

Plus, the campervans all have unique and fun exterior designs. They are painted by local artists. You’ll find different designs on each van. Next time I’d love to pick my van based on the art work.

Niagara Falls Ontario Winter Festival of Lights Details

DATES: November 18, 2023 – February 07, 2024

While sipping your way around the Hot Chocolate Trail be sure to enjoy the 3+ million lights and 75+ spectacular displays the transform Niagara Falls into an incredible winter wonderland. 

Drive or bundle up and walk through NEW displays and themed illumination areas, including the Royal Promenade, Frosted Falls, Enchanted Forest, and Great Canadian North with downloadable maps for planning.

We try to take a break every couple of hours during long road trips and we are always looking for odd roadside attractions.

I found these roadside attractions along I-80 that make a great place to stop and stretch your legs for a few minutes. Don’t miss these roadside attractions along I-80.

I’m sharing some of the best stops from New York to San Francisco.

Roadside Attractions I-80 Pennsylvania

The Boulder Field, Lake Harmony, PA

Get out and stretch at this boulder field in Pennsylvania.

There are different sized and shaped rocks, some up to 26-feet long in a field that was created by glacial action.

This is a great spot to get out of the car for a bit. Be sure to wear good shoes.

T-Rex and Bigfoot, DuBois, PA

I found Bigfoot in Pennsylvania!!!! Now I can say I spotted Bigfoot. You can find him at DooLittles Station. In addition to Bigfoot, you’ll find his friend, T-Rex. Be sure to grab lunch or a treat while you’re there.

The Roller Coaster Capital of the World, Cedar Point, is what it’s best known for worldwide.

But Sandusky isn’t all rollercoasters.

In fact, Sandusky and the surrounding area (a.k.a. Shores & Islands Ohio) is filled with good eats and great fun.

There are so many reasons that you’ll want to visit Sandusky this summer.

There is fun for everyone from the youngest to the oldest in your group.

Paddle Bar & Daiquiri Dock 

It’s so much more than a sporting goods store. Paddle & Climb is all about an active lifestyle. Conveniently located right along Sandusky Bay. 

Head inside to climb their 32′ climbing wall, grab any outdoor gear you need to update, replace or add to your gear and then head outside to sip a daiquiri while enjoying views of Sandusky Bay and, if you’re there on the right night, maybe some live music.

The Sandusky State Theatre 

This beautiful, historical landmark holds shows and special events all year long. You’ll be able to enjoy all sorts of entertainment from youth productions, to a symphony, to classic movie showings.

The State Theatre also offers a children’s educational series and workshops that invest in the next generation.

Also, the theater is reportedly haunted making it one of my favorite places to visit 🙂 

NOTE: The theater is currently shuttered due to storm damage. However, check their Facebook page for other theater offerings in the area.

Sunset Cruise 

Hop aboard the Goodtime I cruise ship for a beautiful, 2 hour trip around Lake Erie at sunset.

There’s nothing quite like a midwest sunset! While soaking up the stunning views, enjoy light entertainment and Happy Hour specials.

Merry-Go-Round Museum 

Learn all about the art and history of the carousel, and step back into childhood by climbing onto the beautifully restored Allan Herschel Carousel.

Feast your eyes on intricately carved “painted ponies,” and don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch one of the master carvers bring one of these beautiful pieces of historical art back to life.

Oh, and while you’re there, ask about the paranormal activity rumored to take place within the walls of this former Sandusky post office turned museum!

Maritime Museum of Sandusky 

Right across from the Battery Park Marina is a perfect place to learn all about the rich maritime history of Sandusky. You’ll travel back in time to the early days of boating, fishing, and shipping on Lake Erie through several interactive exhibits.

You’ll also learn about a variety of topics closely related to maritime history including Sandusky’s connection to the Underground Railroad and everything there is to know about wetlands. On your way out, be sure to step foot on one of the many vessels on display.

Ghostly Manor Thrill Center 

What started as a haunted house has now become an entertainment center that literally has something for everyone, including mini golf, roller skating, an arcade, bounce houses, a jungle gym and more!

All year long you can enjoy being scared half to death walking through the featured haunted house, or test your bravery in the 4D Motion Theater. This place holds all the thrill you can imagine in one huge, dragon-laden castle!

It’s really no wonder it was featured on The Travel Channel’s “Best Places I’ve Ever Been” series.

Cedar Point 

What is a trip to Sandusky, Ohio without a day or two (or three!) spent at one of the biggest and most thrilling amusement parks in the world? Cedar Point has 18 world-class roller coasters that are so diverse, you’ll never want to leave.

The Roller Coaster Capital of the World is so much more than just amazing, unforgettable roller coasters, though! There’s carnival-type rides, family rides, kids rides, special events, shows, and even dinosaurs!

To cool off, visit the Cedar Point Shores Water Park for even more thrills or spend the day at Cedar Point beach, lounging in the pool or jet skiing on Lake Erie. Yep, one day at Cedar Point just won’t be enough!

Hiking Trails

There are so many nature preserves that offer hiking trails along Lake Erie. One of our favorite is Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve located near Sawmill Creek Resort.

Simply Google “Nature Preserves Near Me” and then click on the map to see all the locations available. Be sure to pack bug spray and water.

Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center

Located on the quiet side of Put-in-Bay, visit the famous indoor turtle pond, be fascinated with the observation beehive, improve your birding skills with the birdwatching window, learn about island geology, or explore our exhibits of North American animal diversity and our nature trail and ponds.

There is also a short nature trail at the center.

Goofy Golf

Enjoy a fun day out with the family. Show off your mad driving skills with go-karts on the radical raceway or big track. There is also a junior big track for younger kids.

Tee off at two different 18-hole mini golf courses, Old Town and/or The Lost Castle. 

If things get too hot, jump into the bumper boats for a refreshing activity.

Don’t miss the indoor, air-conditioned arcade for even more family fun.

This is easily a 2-3 hour visit while you are in the Sandusky area.

Beagle Bay Knot Works

It may have started with a bracelet, but today Beagle Bay Knot Works is know home to all the things about nautical knots. We aren’t boaters by any stretch but I loved watching the knot making in process.

Beagle Bay offers quality cordage. rope, tools and books to pass down those knot tying techniques to the next generation. 

There are even classes to tie one on with them.

Market on Main

If you happen to find yourself in the area on the last Saturday of the month between June – September be sure to visit Main Street in Huron, Ohio. Located just a few minutes East of Sandusky.

This charming area creates a unique shopping district where brick and mortar merchants welcome a variety pop-up market artisans/merchants.

Seneca Caverns

While not immediately in the downtown area, Seneca Caverns is just a short 30 minute drive south.

Located in Bellevue, it is one of  largest underground caverns in the area, and considered to be one of America’s most fascinating geological wonders.

Take an hour guided tour of up to seven levels of the cavern system. While on the tour you’ll walk and climb natural stone steps and pathways through the “The Earth Crack” and view “Ole Mist’ry River“, the crystal clear flowing stream which is part of the vast ground-water system which underlies the surrounds region.

The cave is always a cool 54 degrees so dress accordingly and where comfortable shoes. Note-there are lots of stairs involved so check in with your knees to see if there up to the task.

Firelands Adventure Tours

If you’d prefer a guided tour experience in the area Firelands Adventure Tours has your back.They offer 6 different tours on a regular basis and two seasons tours. Tours range from wine and beer to the underground railroad and museums. 

Seasons tours include Haunted Sandusky and Holiday Lights. Two great reasons to come back for a visit in the winter.

Main Street Vermillion

Located a quick 30-minute drive east of Sandusky you’ll find Main Street Vermillion. This historic photogenic downtown complete with a lighthouse is straight out of a Hallmark movie.

From boutique shopping to great eats and incredible views. Be sure to swing by before making the drive back home.

Zuppaman 

Stumbled across this gem after a quick Google search of “deli’s near me” and I was not disappointed. Located in a strip mall the colorful logo window design drew us right in. 

There are so many great choices and everything is made with top-quality ingredients.

I’ll just say this. Zuppaman’s is a 2-hour drive and I’m considering going for lunch on a pretty regular basis it was that good! 

We ordered the Turkey Jive and the Cheesy Pickle with a garlic/black pepper aioli. Yes and yes!!! It’s going to be hard to order something else because those sandwiches were so good. 

The Jive Turkey is Tender Turkey Breast Topped with Sage Stuffing, Cheddar Cheese Fried Potatoes, Cranberry Mayo on Ciabbatta Bread.

The Cheesy Pickle is Mozzarella Grilled Cheese on thick cut Butter Toasted Brioche with Dill Pickles, Bacon & Choice of Mayo/Aioli. Grab a lot of napkins because this is one messy sandwich but its soooo worth it. 

Emma and I split the sandwiches so we could try both. They are both sooo good, but if I had to pick a fave it’s the cheesy pickle for me. 

In addition to great sandwiches their customer service is a 10/10, which is hard to find lately.

Oh, and if you prefer soup and/or salad they have a number of choices available.

OH Taco ?

Located inside the Hotel Kilbourne in downtown Sandusky. OH Taco is an authentic Mexican restaurant and tequila bar with over 75 different tequilas.

You’ll find everything from house-made Guacamole and Tacos to a gigantic Quesadilla and Burrito. OH Taco is also known for having the “best damn margaritas.”

There are plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options as well. You’ll also want to try their “Not So Authentic Mexican” items such as Dawgitos, Fiesta Fries, and Wing Wednesdays.

Volstead Bar ?

Celebrate Sandusky’s history by being seriously the best speakeasy. I thoroughly enjoyed my all-time favorite Whiskey Sour inside this fascinating building full of historical Sandusky lore.

Small City Taphouse ?

Asian cuisine complimented by a huge selection of beers. Choose from 60 different beers on tap and more than 300 bottles. I recommend the sushi!

Dockside Cafe. ? 

The outdoor-only seating allows you to savor a nice, cold drink while enjoying live music and a stunning sunset across the Bay.

Firelands Winery ? 

This winery produces high-quality wines using locally grown grapes. Take a tour of the winery where you will have a balcony view to all of the inner workings. Tastings are included, of course!

Toft Dairy ?

This is Ohio’s oldest dairy. Inside the 76,000 square foot facility is the famous Toft’s Ice Cream Parlor. You’ll find more than 70 flavors of ice cream and yogurt all made with Toft’s own milk sourced from local farms.

It’s definitely worth stopping by for a cone full of delicious, or even a pint to take back to your hotel. “Because real ice cream tastes like Toft’s.”

Sawmill Creek Resort

Traveling with family and/or friends you’re going to want to make a reservation at Sawmill Creek Resort. This newly remodeled resort is just waiting to welcome you.

The resort lies on 235 wooded acres. It’s a convenient walk or bike ride to the 472-acre Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve, which annually attracts about 300 bird species and provides the ideal habitat for an abundance of wildflowers.

Stroll along two miles of hiking trails and watch for migrating birds, who use the preserve as a resting place before crossing the lake.

Beautiful hotel rooms, two pools (both indoor and outdoor), an outdoor fire pit, on-site dining, and books tucked into nooks and crannies.

It is a lot of fun to visit, Mackinac Island is one of the few remaining car-free zones in the United States and there are many activities that are indoor, outdoor and, yes, there are even free things to do.

Oh, and there is fudge….lots and lots of tasty fudge.

These tips are from those in the know….those that live on the island or visit quite frequently.

Insider Tips For Visiting Mackinac Island

• The island is VERY pet-friendly..yay! By the way, pets stay for FREE at Mission Point Resort.
• Bring a bike on the ferry and have free transportation around the island all day 🙂
• Grab a cheap breakfast at the Murray Hotel fudge shop, fresh donuts are only 60 cents each (prices may vary)
• The locals like to hang out at Horn’s Bar and Grill for tasty Mexican food and margaritas.

• The best time to visit the island is during the shoulder season (May and September/October). Be wary of the end of May/first part of June as hoards of school children descend on the island for year-end field trips.
• The island is basically one giant hill, be prepared to exercise those glutes walking both uphill and downhill. Good shoes are a must. My favorite are incredibly comfortable, but not very fashionable, Merrell shoes.

• Hidden behind the Inn at Stonecliffe is Sunset Point. A well-kept secret for great sunset viewing, the public is welcome.
• The library has a small deck on the back offering excellent views of the Straits. Enjoy the view while reading a book.

• There are no stop signs or stoplights on the island so be sure to look before crossing streets and entering intersections.

• Beyond fudge, the island has 2 very unique sweet treats. The Pecan Balls at the Tea Room and the Popcorn Balls at Stonecliff Hotel. I think it’s best to try them both to find your favorite.
• Mission Point Resort has the only map on the island that shows all of the Straits buoy systems in real time.
• Get your cup of joe at Lucky Bean Coffee on Market Street.

• Mission Point Resort offers wine tasting. I may have brought home a bottle of the Mission Point Cabernet Sauvignon.
• Enjoy breakfast at the Chuckwagon, I heard it’s THE place to have breakfast on the island.
• Have a nightcap at the Cupola Bar at the Grand Hotel which affords visitors a million dollar view while they sip a cocktail or champagne. On that note, the Grand Hotel does not charge a fee for entering in the evening.

• If you find a “taxi” driver you like you can request them for your next ride
• If you are planning to visit the Butterfly House, do it early in your trip as one admission gets you in for unlimited visits.

Tokyo Festival: Sanja Matsuri

Nearly 2 million people flood the streets of the district of Asakusa to take part in what’s considered one of the wildest and largest festivals in Japan. This festival, which usually takes place over the third full weekend in May, celebrates the three founders of Sensoji Temple.

Throughout the entire weekend, you’ll find the streets brimming with tourists and locals, food stalls, and festival games, all while Japanese drums and flutes continuously serenade the crowd.

It all begins on Friday afternoon with a large procession called Daigyoretsu Parade. A Shinto ceremony is held immediately upon arrival at Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine.

Male dancers are adorned in happi coats with their yukata while the female dancers are adorned in amigasa with their yukata when performing a traditional dance while holding unique instruments, called Binzasara, that have a similar vibe to an accordion but are made up of strung together bamboo.

To round off the evening, the first of the more than one hundred portable shrines takes to the streets accompanied by Japanese musicians.

These shrines, or mikoshi, symbolically carry the Shinto deities, bringing good fortune to the locals as they’re paraded through the streets all weekend long.

The fun has only begun as Saturday features the mikoshi from the 44 neighborhoods of Asakusa. The nearly one hundred shrines are also paraded to Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine then carried back to their neighborhoods to bring good luck.

You’ll even see women and children carrying their shrines.

Gear up early Sunday morning to watch a fascinating competition between the revelers, who will all be wearing matching festival attire, vie to carry one of the three main mikoshi.

Spectators are not allowed past the entrance gates as the competition can get a little crazy, posing a possible danger to outsiders.

After a couple of hours of serious competition, the mikoshi is paraded off in different directions with the goal of passing through every street by the end of the day, finally ending back at Asakusa Shrine.

Chugoku Festival: Awa Odori

“It’s a fool who dances and a fool who watches! If both are fools, you might as well have fun dancing!”

You’ll know it’s Awa Odori when you hear these words being chanted throughout the streets of Tokushima City.

Awa Odori is one of the Japanese traditional arts that has lasted for over 400 years. It is held nationwide from August 12-15th but none are larger than what you’ll find in Tokushima.

This dance festival found its roots from a whole bunch of happy drunks attempting to dance while celebrating the newly built Tokushima Castle back in 1587. Thus the Awa Odori is characterized by energetic rhythm and irregular steps.

Folk dances are also performed to welcome the souls of ancestors in the Bon season. During the day you can find several dozen dancers on stage performing the famous Selected Awa Dance.

By evening, excitement will build with great fervor all throughout the city. All sorts of musical instruments including drums and gongs and flutes fill the air.

You’ll be hard-pressed not to join in on the dancing.

Shikoku Festival: Niihama Taiko Festival

If you find yourself in Shikoku in the middle of October, don’t miss out on yet another festival full of culture and excitement.

Gigantic gold floats with huge silver tassels in the shape of taiko drums are paraded along the streets, carried by men and boys as young as 16.

These floats, representing the 47 neighborhood teams, weigh upwards of 2 tons. The main events of this festival involve “fighting” over who can perform some incredible feat with the float.

You’ll see men attempting to throw the floats into the air or holding them up as long as possible to boast their strength. The teams have been known to ram each others’ floats in an attempt to knock the other over.

It’s really no surprise that this festival is often referred to as the Otoko Matsuri or “Men’s Festival.”

What To Eat While In Japan

While you are in Japan enjoying the festivals be sure to indulge in some delicious foods.

Ramen – This dish is so common and popular it has practically become a byword for Japanese food. This Ramen is nothing like the cheap packages you can find at the grocery store.

Authentic Japanese Ramen will please your taste buds with its traditional salt, soy sauce, and miso flavors, or try more exotic flavors like the pork curry.

Sushi – Get adventurous and try some authentic Japanese sushi which combines vinegar rice and seafood. Raw fish is the most common ingredient, but if you’re not so keen on that, you could try the boiled prawns or the grilled conger eel.

Be sure to find a restaurant close to a fishing port for the best tasting sushi.

Karaage – It may look like the fried chicken we know, but the soy sauce, salt, and various other spices give these starchy fried chicken bites a whole different flavor. You’ll find variations on this dish depending on where you go.

Tonkatsu – A thick slice of pork, battered, coated in breadcrumbs, and fried to perfection, is usually served alongside shredded cabbage. A rich, sweet brown sauce is drizzled on top.

Sukiyaki – Meat and vegetables are stewed in an iron pot with a sweet sauce known as warishita. This hot pot meal is often simmered right on the table and shared.

One-of-a-Kind Attractions

While you are in Japan absolutely make sure you stop by these attractions!

Arashyama Bamboo Grove – The insane beauty of this forest will leave you in awe. You’ll simply be blown away by the height of these bamboo! Listen to the beautiful sound the swaying bamboo surround you with and soak in this forest that is unlike any other.

Rainbow Karaoke – Karaoke is quite popular in Japan so you don’t want to miss out on taking to a microphone! This particular karaoke is located in Shibuya.

You’ll find several rooms each with their own themes. Some will even offer instruments. In true to Japanese style, the rooms are private so you won’t have to worry about singing in front of strangers.

Robot Restaurant – This place is sort of beyond description but I’ll do my best. There are robots and dancers and space gorillas and robotic snakes and sharks with laser beams on their heads. Make sure to book a reservations!

All your senses won’t even know what to do with it all, and you’ll find yourself looking forward to going back!

I see people hauling numerous bags through airports.

I go on press trips and, again, everyone is carrying an extra bag or twop. I’ve often wondered what is inside those bags that is so important.

Since I can’t peak in other bags I thought it would be fun to let you peak in mine and share the bare essentials of what I need when I travel beyond my clothes and shoes.

Without further ado…..here’s what I pack as travel blogger and travel pro.

Note, I feel like this is an ever changing list, but over the years I’ve stayed pretty consistent to what is listed below. The one main change is that I seldom take a DSLR camera with me unless I’m taking a road trip.

For a trip to New Orleans Plantation Country, I packed up my Follow Your Own Path Thirty-One Gifts Wander tote bag, which I absolutely ADORE, with two of their zippered pouches, to help stay organized, a Rubie mini purse and other essentials.

By the way, this is a great purse so if you need a last minute gift….this is it!

I wanted to take my gorgeous Miles of Style purse, but I quickly ran out of room. Darn Spirit Air and their limited luggage rule.

Here’s all the important stuff that goes in the tote bag:

The Carpe Diem (personalized by Thirty-One Gifts) zippered pouch held all my tech/business gear which included:

There you go, everything I pack , beyond clothes, as a travel blogger when heading out on a press trip. The bonus is, most of the stuff stays at the hotel and I’m able to use the tote bag while I wander around.

Of course, talk to five different travel bloggers, get five different responses on what to pack.

For me, this works, it’s the bare minimum so I don’t have to cart around a bunch of stuff. It fits neatly inside the Thirty-One gift bags so everything stay organized and it allows me to be mobile while capturing the best stories.

To say I’m not a fan of cold temps is probably an understatement. Dips below 40 and it’s game over for outdoor fun for me.

Alan always tells me I just need to dress for the weather. My response has always been “It’s IMPOSSIBLE to stay warm outside in the cold!!”.

To be fair, I can’t say I tried really hard. As soon as the cold hits me I’m done.

However, (don’t tell Alan I said this), I think he’s right for temps that hover around 20 to 40 degrees and prAna helped prove his point. (Note, they sent us two articles of clothing for this review)

Listen, anything under 20 degrees and I’m just going to stand firm in my decision to not play outside UNLESS it’s to see the northern lights or spot polar bears.

Luckily, prAna offers travel clothes that will keep me toasty warm on cold days. Plus, they are fashionable and don’t look like sports clothes which is a huge bonus.

I don’t want to walk around looking like I just left the gym, I want clothes that let me have fun outside but are still nice for sitting down at a casual restaurant to grab a bite to eat.

prAna for Him

I ordered a Pinnacle Jacket in Charcoal, XL for Alan. I was a bit concerned that the sleeves and coat length wouldn’t be long enough. Alan is 6’2″ and sleeves are almost always too short. Color us surprised when he tried it on and it fit perfectly. Plus, it looks really good on him (although I may be a bit partial).

Note: Prana no longer makes the Pinnacle Jacket, but we’d recommend any jackets they currently have on their site.

Alan has worn this a few times and really likes it. He wears a t-shirt under it and the jacket keeps him plenty warm.

IF he needed to work outdoors in colder temps I think a thin thermal shirt instead of a t-shirt would keep him just as warm.

Of course, prAna offers an entire line of men’s clothing so if the Pinnacle jacket isn’t a match for his wardrobe there are a lot of other options.

prAna for Her

I ordered the Crestland Pullover in the Charcoal Heather color in an XL. The sizes, in my opinion, run a bit small. I would normally order a large but after consulting their size guide I decided to go with an XL and I’m glad I did.  An XL fits perfectly.

Note–Again, the Crestland Pullover is no longer in stock, but there are some gorgeous sweater options on their site.

I toss on a tank top underneath and wear just the pullover outside and it keeps me toasty warm while I’m outside. Plus, it has pockets which may be my favorite feature!

The only con to the Crestland Pullover is that it pills very easily. I wore it once noticed pilling on the sleeves. It doesn’t stop me from wearing it, but it’s fair to note that it will take a bit of maintenance.

Add needing clothes that also travel well and I may as well be searching for a unicorn.

After searching high and low for the right travel clothes “frustrating” becomes an understatement.

There isn’t much else to do, but quit, because no one ever sees a unicorn.

I thought all was lost until a friend suggested I check out Chico’s.

I’ll admit, I’d never shopped at Chico’s in the past because I thought they only carried clothes for smaller women.

Surprise, surprise, Chico’s clothes actually fit me. Not too baggy, not too tight or short or long.

They fit me perfectly. Not only did they fit, but I looked great in them.

Y’all better sit down because I did, indeed, find a unicorn.

Of course, it helped that Hollie at my local Chico’s store helped dress me. She is quite the fashionista and she let me know what colors and patterns would and wouldn’t work with me. She is hired for life.

I love having someone that can tell me honestly what I should wear and what I shouldn’t wear. Hopefully, you’ll find a Hollie at your local store.

TIPS FOR FINDING THE PERFECT TRAVEL CLOTHES

1. Look for colors that will look great with your skin tone. If you are unsure, blacks and whites are a pretty safe bet for most everyone.
2. Don’t shy away from patterns without trying it on. Horizontal stripes are supposed to be a HUGE no-no for curvy girls. For me, they look great!
3. Select separates that can all be interchanged to have the most outfits with the least amount of pieces.
4. Find pieces that aren’t too snug and allow you to move around. I tried on many pieces to find the right fabrics that fit my body best. It may take a few tries, but you got this.
5. Make sure your pants are the proper length for your body shape. It was a big NO for me to wear pants that ended right below the knee. I needed to go a little longer, between mid-calf and ankle, to look my best.
6. STOP looking at the sizes. Oh, I know you are so tempted to toss back that great looking shirt because of a number on the tag. Stop it! Buy the shirt, cut the tag out and look and feel good. Same goes with pants if they fit perfectly the number on the tag does not matter.
7. Don’t assume a store doesn’t carry your size. Visit stores that aren’t on your radar. Look for stores that have helpful employees that look stylish.

It’s important to note that these outfits traveled in a backpack and I never once ironed any of my clothes during vacation. I’d say the clothes held up really well.

Everything I needed for two weeks away is in my backpack.

This is at the end of the trip so its a little fuller with trinkets for family and friends back home.
