I was born and raised in Cadillac and while growing up here there was not much to do. You basically had like three options, go to the movies, bowling, or do an outdoor activity like swimming, hiking, taking out a four wheeler on the trails, fishing, skiing or snowboarding. You get the gist of it and a lot of people couldn’t afford the fancy outdoor toys including my family.

I spent a lot of time outdoors, hanging out with the neighbors and riding my bike. Thinking back on it, I now realize how few activities Cadillac had compared to the places I’ve lived since. It kind of makes me sad.

After a number of years away, I moved back last year and I’m rediscovering my hometown through fresh eyes and finding that there are so many things to do now compared to a decade ago.

Summer Fun For Locals and Visitors Alike

Camping

Cadillac offers great places to camp with a tent or camper, there are even cabin rentals on the lake!

Right between the lakes you have Mitchell State Park that offers many sites as well as some cabins. The benefit of staying at this one is you’re right between two lakes and across the street from Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center. The center offers hiking trails and numerous events throughout the year. This summer you can take a fly fishing seminar in July. Be sure to check out the other numerous activities available this summer. Another benefit of staying at the state park is the accessibility to nearby restaurants, and most importantly, coffee. Also, downtown Cadillac is just on the other side of Lake Cadillac about 10 minutes drive away.

Another campground to check out on the lake is Hemlock Campground. I haven’t stayed at Hemlock, but I’m definitely curious to try it. It looks perfect for campers that like a bit more privacy.

Shopping and Eating

Cadillac’s charming downtown is a delightful mix of retail shops, restaurants, and coffee spots. Some of our favorites include:

• Chunky Bear Coffee: A cozy spot to sip a cup of coffee.
• Wildflour Bakery: A perfect place to send a letter to your future self.

Take A Color Driving Tour

Color driving tours are kinda the gold standard when it comes to fall fun and that is no exception in the Cadillac area.

The region has two fall color routes that you don’t want to miss. Each route is a perfect day trip that allows you to explore Cadillac and the greater area to find some of our best hidden gems.

The in-town Cadillac route is an 18-mile loop that takes you around both Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. Did you know we had two lakes in the heart of downtown Cadillac?

Before you begin your fall color drive grab a cup of coffee at one of the many local coffee shops and then start your tour at Cadillac Commons. Drive along the lakes and part of the Manistee National Forest before arriving in “Cadillac West.” There you can visit Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and take a jaunt on the Heritage Nature Trail. The route will loop you back into downtown Cadillac in time for lunch and shopping.

The Around Cadillac color tour loops total about 200 miles. There is both an east and west segment that will wind you to scenic overlooks, beautiful hiking trails, fall canopies, farm markets and boutiques.

The western side of the loop will have you stopping at seven overlooks and take you past a few farms and hiking trails while the eastern loop is focused on the agricultural aspects of the region.

Where To Have Family Fun Down On The Farm

Dick Family Farm in McBain is a centennial dairy farm open on Fridays and Saturdays in October that offers lots of family fun in the fall. Pick out the perfect pumpkin from over 20 varieties, explore the Pure Michigan corn maze, climb the hay bale mountain, play in the corn bin, and pet the animals. Homemade donuts and cider are also available!

Brinks Family Creamery located in McBain is a 4th generation farm, creating premium milk and cheese products directly from the Grade A milk of top quality, registered Holsteins. They also have play areas for kids and animals to pet along with a fully stocked bakery. If that is too far of a trip for you, keep your eyes peeled as they have just opened a frozen yogurt shop in downtown Cadillac, Benny’s Froyo and Mo!

This next stop truly has something for everyone. Maple Leaf Farm and Creamery in Falmouth is an artisan goat milk creamery & farm, take an afternoon to discover their on-site classes and demonstrations, to educational activities and camps, festivals and gift shops, hayrides, wagon rides and more! No shortage of fun on this fully operational farm. This is one of our favorite farms to visit. Throughout the year you’re always welcome to visit the goats, pssss, spring is great for that!

Norman’s Farm in Tustin is a small family owned farm in operation since 1889! You will find a variety of pumpkins, squash, gourds, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes on site. This farm yields not only quality produce and livestock, but also seven generations of agricultural knowledge and ability.

The Hudson Farm in Cadillac features seasonal events and a gift shop cleverly named “Ewe-niquely U”, with plenty of fun activities to explore. Their Fall Festival entertainment includes: feeding & petting farm animals, wagon rides, hay maze, free crafts, pumpkins, hot & cold refreshments and much more!

The mission at 3rd Day Farm in Lake City is clear -“learn, love, & give…REAL food!”. You can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

The Poplar Pines farm in Mesick produces a variety of farm fresh organic duck eggs, chicken eggs, and home baked breads, available on a first come, first serve basis at their seasonal farm stand. Other fall activities on site include a petting zoo, sandbox, playground, and hayrides with cider and donuts!

Hikers on the Hunt for Fall Colors

While Cadillac offers some remarkable driving tours that show off the best color, some prefer to view the scene on foot.

Our favorite hike is at the High Rollway on the Manistee River. Incredible views with an easy walk, pack a picnic and stay awhile. The color views are amazing from here. This article shares more about the high rollaway plus four additional hiking trails to check out!

ORV Fall Trail Fun

Cadillac and the surrounding region has 120 miles of off-road vehicle trails along 10 ORV trail systems, which makes it a great way to get deep in the woods and see fall colors missed by many.

Cadillac also has new wayfinding signs making your adventure in the woods easier to navigate. There are also a number of outfitters in the area to rent an ORV from so you don’t have to own one to get out on the trails.

We went with Bigfoot Epic Adventures, because of course we did, but the Cadillac CVB has a list of rentals listed so you can find the one that works best for your up north adventure.

Fall River Floats 

Soak up all that the fall season has left to offer by taking to one of the Cadillac Area’s two magnificent rivers. The Big Manistee River, a wide, smooth flowing river with many great places to get out and enjoy picnics, camping, and fishing; or give the Pine River a try, more narrow, swift and a true challenge. Can’t make a float this fall? No worries, come on up this winter and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with a winter rafting trip on the Pine or nearby East Jordan. It’s our favorite winter activity.

Fall Fishing in Northern Michigan

The section of the Big Manistee River below Tippy Dam is designated a National Scenic River. The changing colors of the leaves and wildlife visible along the river banks as autumn moves into early winter make for a beautiful float. In the fall, the Steelhead are feeding heavily for the onset of winter; you will also find Coho Salmon and Brown Trout. Read more about it here.

KISS Fans

One of the most unexpected discoveries in Cadillac is the KISS memorial at Cadillac High School. You can read about the why it exists here, but it’s definitely worth a stop for 70s Rock n Roll fans and all those who appreciate some seriously good hard rock music.

This ranks right at the top of my “must experience for myself” list. I love camping and I love waterfalls and Dismal Canyon is offering a unique, one-of-a-kind experience the puts both things together. The Sleeping Water campsite features a grotto AND a private waterfall!!!

Dismal Canyon is a National Natural Landmark offering up rugged wilderness, secluded campsites, hiking, kayaking/boating, gorgeous wildflowers and more.

A 1.5 mile hiking trail on the canyon floor follows the stream through sky-reaching boulders, past thundering waterfalls, into a secret world of mossy-green and pearl gray filled with ferns and giant trees. Its waterfalls, natural bridges, cliffs and boulders give this place a magnificent splendor.

Totally swoon worthy.

Hunt for Glow Worms When You Visit North Alabama

Since you’re already camping at Dismal Canyon stay up late and search for glow worms (aka Dismalites). This is the only place in the world you can see them!

These “glowworms” can only survive in very specific habitats and are unique to only a few places on Earth. They are “close cousins” of the rare glowworms found in Australia and New Zealand.

What Are Dismalites (aka glow worms)

According to Dismal Canyon:

They are the larvae stage of a unique, native, and endemic species of insect (North American Orfelia fultoni) that emits a bright blue-green light to attract food, in the form of other flying insects.

What habitat to Dismalites/Glow Worms need to survive?

• Humidity to prevent them from drying out

• Hanging surfaces to allow them to build sticky webs to trap their food

• An adequate food supply of insects

• A still atmosphere to prevent webs from tangling

• Darkness to allow their light to show

And lucky for us, Dismals Canyon provides the perfect habitat for these unique insects to survive.

As an added bonus the Dismalites share their cavern with bioluminescent Firefly larvae that live in the creek beds giving visitors a one-of-a-kind experience.

How To See the Dismalites/Glow Worms?

You’ll need to sign up for a guided night tour to see these critters for yourself. They only offer four tours a night with a max of 15 people per tour. Much like the campsite mentioned above, the sooner you call the better!

Go to “Church” at Cathedral Caverns State Park

The stalagmite forest and frozen waterfall are the classic views at Cathedral Caverns State Park. The cave, which maintains a 60-degree temperature all year long, has a huge opening that measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high. Cathedral Caverns is definitely a spiritual experience if you take a few moments to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. It really is simply stunning.

Human habitation can be traced back 8,000 years in the cave. It is home to one of the largest stalagmites in the world measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.

Outside the cave the park offers gemstone mining, an activity for any age, but especially popular with younger visitors. Beyond that, the park encompasses 493 acres with hiking trails and improved campsites along with primitive tent camping areas.

Enjoy Music and Dinner In A Cave

At Rattlesnake Saloon the swinging doors lead to a cave in what is referred to as “a watering hole under a rock.” The chow time menu consists of burgers and sandwiches, usually accompanied by local live music.

Located near Tuscubmia, the dining area is situated under a bluff. Interestingly enough, when you arrive at the Saloon, after you park, you hop in a flatbed truck for a ride into the cavern.

Important things to know about your visit:

• Open Thursday-Sunday, the seasons affect open hours, check website for complete details
• Wait in the parking area for the saloon taxi to take you to the saloon as table are available.
• Live music most nights after 5p. That is also when alcohol (beer, cider, wine only) is available.
• Kitchen closes at 9pm
• Most importantly, horses can be tied to the hitching posts outside…it’s a real saloon

Have a BLAST in Huntsville

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center has long been a favorite attraction. The Smithsonian Affiliate is the Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and has one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia on display anywhere in the world.

This is where rockets were originally developed to launch the Apollo spacecraft that first took mankind to the moon (or did it?????lol)

The scope of what they do here is amazing. The Marshall Space Flight Center is home to development of the Space Launch System, the most powerful rocket ever designed to carry human explorers, their equipment and science payloads deeper into space than ever before, to an asteroid and to Mars. 

There is so much to do here from flight simulators and a multi-axis trainer to a g-force accelerator and a moon shot.

You could seriously spend the entire day visiting especially if you love all things space exploration related.

Dig For Treasure at Unclaimed Baggage Center

The Unclaimed Baggage Center is where all “lost” luggage goes to die or be rehomed. It’s the only lost luggage retailer in the United States. 

I always wondered how they could have so much luggage all the time and now I know. Even though the airlines use sophisticated tracking technology and reunite almost ALL the luggage (over 99.5% of bags) with their owners if a bag is truly lost, airlines pay out a claim to the passenger.

It’s only after an extensive three-month search that an unclaimed bag is deemed “lost.” Thankfully, this only happens to less than 0.03% of all checked luggage….whew.

Now this means that there is a slim percentage of luggage available to be bought by Unclaimed Baggage, sorted and the good stuff put up for sale. 

You’ll never know what you’ll find there but if you’re in the area it probably worth a visit. Note, they are closed on Sunday. Always check the website or call for current hours of operation.

Pay Your Respects at the Coon Dog Cemetery

More than 300 coon dogs have been laid to rest in the scenic “Freedom Hills.”

Here you’ll see unique headstones and epitaphs that pay tribute to man’s best friend. Coon dogs have been laid to rest here since 1937. 

Open year-round during daylight hours. Admission is free.

Hiking and Biking Trails

Walk or rent bicycles and ride the 20 miles of the Greenprints Trail System, a series of multi-use trails along shaded creeks in and around Woodstock.

At Olde Rope Mill Park on the Little River, take the paved and dirt trails around the cotton mill ruins, over a bridge across the river and read the historical markers highlighting the area’s history. The serious mountain bike trails at Olde Rope Mill Park are consistently rated in the top 10 trails in Georgia by Singletracks.com.

One of the most popular mountain bike trails in the U.S. is the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trail System in nearby Canton.

Red Top Mountain State Park is a biking and hiker’s haven with its own unique recreation and programming. More than 15 miles of trails wind through the forested park, providing opportunities for exercise and nature photography. The gravel-topped, four-mile Iron Hill Trail is open to both hikers and bikers, offering pretty views of the lake’s shoreline.

The Noonday Creek Trail runs from the center of downtown Woodstock, allowing families to park in town and ride along the 1.43 miles at their leisure. The whole family will enjoy exploring by scooter, bike or on foot.

Summer Berry Picking

If visiting during the summer, don’t miss Berry Patch Farms. This family -owned and -operated pick-your-own farm located in Woodstock is situated on over 50 acres of land and has been a popular destination since it opened in 1978. Hand pick blueberries during the summer. Admission to the farm is free, just pay for what you pick. Hours vary.

Weekly Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, April 20 – December 28, 2024, the Woodstock Farm Fresh Market, located on Market Street in Downtown Woodstock, showcases a variety of locally grown products spanning various cultures. It’s a can’t-miss celebration of fresh food and local love.

Outdoor Music Events

From April through July, the Lantern Series takes place on the Woodstock Arts Event Green in Downtown Woodstock and features world-renowned artists. The series consists of different genres, backgrounds and ideologies. From folk to pop, from jazz to funk, there is great music to be heard!

From May through September, enjoy the Woodstock Summer Concert Series. The 2024 season is a mix of music genres. The hits you’ll hear on the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater stage this year span music eras from the 60s to today. The Pacific Northwest had been my siren song for so long and stepping foot on that soil was a balm to my soul. 

Our first task, pick up our Escape Campervan. Yes, part of the dream was to drive around Oregon in a decked out campervan, waking up in nature or to the sounds of the ocean and exploring. No hotels required. It was epic!

The Escape Campervan is Surprisingly Affordable

When we first started planning our trip I quickly realized that a car rental was going to be crazy expensive. Add that to hotel costs and I started to hesitate on my decision to vacation in Oregon. 

I’d always made the assumption that a Campervan would far exceed my budget even though I’d always wanted to travel in one. So, instead of guessing, I jumped on the site, put in my info and was pleasantly surprised. 

There are a couple different campervan models. We went with the largest campervan, the Big Sur model, with a pick up and return in Portland. We added a bedding and kitchen kit (more on that later) as well as a couple of camp chairs.

All told, we paid around $1800 for 9 nights/10 days.

While it ended up only saving us a couple hundred dollars it was worth it for the experience.

It’s a vacation home and rental car in one

The campervan comes kitted out with a queen size bed, a camp stove and a small sink. For additional fees, we rented a kitchen kit and bedding kit from Escape Campervan.

The kitchen kit included pots, pans, plates, cups, and utensils and worked perfectly well for our road trip. We bought a pour over coffee maker because for us coffee is life and an absolute must.

A solar panel on the roof powered the refrigerator so we didn’t have to lug around a cooler and worry about our ice supply and keeping things cold.

The bedding kit was a sheet, light comforter, and two pillows. We traveled in September and the nights were cool and in some areas it was COLD. The bedding kit did not work for us and we wouldn’t rent it again. 

Instead, we stopped at a large box store and bought a heavy duty blanket, a 2-inch memory foam topper (because the bed was way more comfy with it) and an extra pillow. Our nights were much cozier after that investment.

Now that we know we can pack accordingly for our next trip.

It’s A Picnic Every Day

Because we had a kitchen with us we were able to picnic at some really lovely locations. We simply found a spot we liked and set about making lunch or dinner. Sometimes, we simply stopped to make a cup of coffee and enjoy the view.

No waiting in line for a table, no crazy expensive food cost, simply find a spot, open the back of the campervan, and cook up your next meal. 

If there is inclement weather the queen bed can be converted back to seating and the van table set up to work or dine at.

I know for some that eating out is part of the travel experience and while we did go out a couple times we really enjoyed the experience of spending our time outdoors for our meals.

Sleep Under the Stars

We, unfortunately, visited the PNW while the wild fires were raging through the region which meant a LOT of hazy, smoke filled days and nights. 

However, spending our evenings tucked in the campervan (I would say around the campfire, but those were banned during our visit except for one location), reading a book, and falling asleep to the sound of nature is everything. Waking up in the trees and quiet is seriously everything for us. 

We mostly stayed in National Forest and State Campgrounds

If you love camping this is the way to go. We are not RV people (a whole list of reasons why, but for us, it just doesn’t feel like camping), however, the campervan is a great compromise between a tent and an RV. 

Traveling In The Escape Campervan Is A Lot of Fun!

It is perfect for long road trips as we proved during our epic trip around Oregon. We picked up our Campervan in Portland and from there we explored as much of the state, from mountains to shore, as we could over 10 days and drove about 1100 miles. 

Picnicking with epic views of the ocean, sleeping tucked in the woods under the shelter of some of the tallest trees, and driving to waterfalls was all part of our adventure.

Plus, the campervans all have unique and fun exterior designs. They are painted by local artists. You’ll find different designs on each van. Next time I’d love to pick my van based on the art work.

1. Airboats & Alligators Airboat Tour

If you’ve never been out on an airboat now is your chance. These Lake Charles swamp tours complete with airboats and alligators are so much fun. Skim across the water as you look for alligators and learn about life in the bayou.

2. Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway

Here at Just Short of Crazy we LOVE a good wildlife refuge hike and the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway does not disappoint. An easy 1.5 mile loop through marsh wetlands that includes an observation tower overlooking the refuge.

The refuge includes informational kiosks, covered benches, water and most importantly, a bathroom.  The walkway is ADA friendly and is open from sunrise to sunset.

3. Seafood Sensation Trail

You can’t visit Lake Charles and not try the seafood and this seafood sensation trail let’s you try the best of the best. Everything from fish to oysters to shrimp and crabs make their way into local dishes.  Follow the trail and savor the seafood.

4. Boudin Trail

Prior to my visit to Louisiana I had never heard of Boudin. For those who are curious Boudin is made of varying amounts of pork meat, liver, rice, onions, parsley and dry seasonings like salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic powder. It is THE snack food of southwest Louisiana. I tried Boudin as both a link sausage and as a Boudin ball. This is definitely a culinary dish that is a must-try when you are in Louisiana.

5. Mardi Gras Museum

Seriously, does it get any more romantic than a carriage ride?  Without hesitation this is one of my favorite things to do in Lake Charles for couples. The Charpentier Historic District in listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The district includes more than 40 blocks of turn-of-the-century Carpenter-style buildings. The tour is only available during the day so that you can best see the architecture and gorgeous gardens. It’s a must tour if you are visiting with the one you love.

Get a Couples Massage at the Spa du Lac

Y’all probably know that going to the spa is one of my favorite things. The Spa du Lac is a blissful experience and one worth adding to the memory books.  Covering 8,700 square feet with facial, massage and body treatment rooms, seperate men’s and women’s locker rooms, saunas, whirlpools and more.  After visiting the spa be sure to indulge in a dip in the pool or take a float on the lazy river.

Just as its one-of-a-kind name suggests, an escape to Wytheville offers unique options for an active getaway for couples or groups of friends.

Where To Stay in Wytheville

Wytheville’s inviting downtown has unique lodging options to make any stay special.

Outdoor Attractions and Parks to Experience in Wytheville

With its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it should be no surprise that outdoor activities, from sight-seeing to fly fishing to mountain biking, are popular here.

A short drive from downtown, Big Walker Lookout is an attraction known for its outstanding views and authentic local charm. The family-owned-and-operated attraction is the oldest and highest private attraction in Virginia.

It features a country store and, at an elevation of 3,405 feet, offers a spectacular view of the Appalachian Mountains and Virginia farmlands.

Several area waterways offer some outstanding options for fly fishing. Cripple Creek, Dry Run and Venick Run are all known as outstanding trout fishing locations. The New River is another favorite for anglers.

The beautiful and unique New River Trail State Park is home to the New River Trail, one of America’s premier rails-to-trails routes. This 57-mile rails-to-trails park runs adjacent to the river and offers a host of recreational opportunities for bikers, horseback riders, canoers and kayakers as well as fishermen. Camping, bikes and canoe rentals are available on site.

Another park landmark, the Historic Shot Tower, tells the history of the surrounding lead mines and how that lead was transformed into ammunition. 

More outdoor adventure can be found at Crystal Springs Recreation Area, located just three miles from downtown Wytheville. The 1,800-acre preserve appeals to both hikers and mountain bikers with its diverse trail options. The mountain bike terrain park has more than a dozen features such as balance beams, a teeter totter and a wooden berm wall. Hiking trails offer easy half-mile options as well as the more challenging seven-mile boundary trail.

Just over the ridge from Crystal Springs is Beagle Ridge Herb Farm. This is Southwest Virginia’s premiere lavender farm, which features 14 themed display gardens and the Flying Flowers butterfly house. 

Where To Eat and Drink in Wytheville

Whether out-and-about or exploring downtown shops, visitors can find a variety of local establishments to satisfy their hunger and thirst.

Just minutes from New River Trail, West Wind Farm Vineyard and Winery is a family farm in a beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain setting. The fourth-generation farm produces and harvests grapes for its annual small batch wine collection and visitors can sample the family-crafted wines, then choose a favorite to complement a charcuterie board made with local cheeses, Virginia peanuts and gourmet pickled veggies from the tasting room shop. 

Downtown, there are plenty more options for wine, beer and more. 

Petals Wine Bar offers evening Sipping Hour specials and more. Customers can choose a bottle from the wall of wine or choose from the variety of craft beers on the menu. Speaking of the menu, gourmet grilled cheese paninis, charcuterie and cheese plates are among the options to enjoy. Check the calendar for workshops, too, pairing an evening of wine with charcuterie creation, wreath-making and more. 

7 Dogs Brew Pub is the perfect spot to enjoy snacks, burgers or sandwiches and taste the local brews.

Nearby Seven Sisters Brewery has brews of its own. Visitors can enjoy the game hall, live music and fare from a rotating food truck lineup.

Chau’s Corner Bakery has a modest storefront on the outside and a surprising and mouthwatering menu inside. Drawing on her heritage and different places she’s lived, Chau prepares authentic Vietnamese dishes as well as Cajun etouffee and Texas-style tamales and homemade baked goods.

Located in the Bolling Wilson Hotel, Graze On Main  is a favorite restaurant for locals. The menu features craft cocktails and an impressive bourbon list. The Southern inspired dinner menu includes steak, seafood and daily specials. The hotel also has Perch Rooftop Terrace, a favorite spot for enjoying cocktails at sunset.

For a dining experience like no other, a visit to The 1776 Log House Restaurant is in order. Fine dining in an 18th century atmosphere is on the menu at this locally owned treasure. An extensive menu is offered in this exceptional two-story log cabin. Christopher’s Lounge serves craft cocktails and a massive gift shop is overflowing with unique finds.

Where To Find Local Artists and World Class Art

For local art finds, there are several galleries to explore:

• Laurel Creek Pottery is a pottery studio and folk-art gallery featuring the work of artist Laura Abbey. Abbey displays a variety of other artists’ work and hosts demonstrations and hands-on workshops.
• Formato Fine Arts, where owner Lily Formato can often be seen painting in the front windows on Main Street, features exhibits of emerging and established local artists’ work.
• At the Rose Cottage School of Art visitors are invited to connect with their artistic spirit and make unique creations of their own. The school hosts fine art and music classes, paint nights and a slate of creative workshops and camps. Rose Cottage also hosts a variety of visiting artisans’ workshops throughout the year.

For performing arts lovers, Wytheville’s Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre is a must-see experience. The 200-seat, German-themed venue is known for its year-round offerings of Broadway caliber, “all musicals, all the time” entertainment. A four-course, themed, plated meal is served before each performance. 

Visitors will also want to check out the show schedule at downtown’s historic Millwald Theatre.  Built in 1928, the theatre originally boasted Vaudeville and “moving pictures” programming and has been revived as a multipurpose entertainment and education venue.

Amicalola Falls State Park Visitor Center

Start your visit at the newly remodeled Visitor Center. This is where you can find all the happenings at the park during. From ranger programs to interactive exhibits featuring live animals, the center provides valuable insights into the diverse ecosystems found within the park. 

In addition to being an information hub, the visitor center has a nice gift shop, cafe, and clean bathrooms. 

Gather maps, embark on a GPS scavenger hunt, and kickstart your adventure in the heart of this popular state park.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Amicalola Falls State Park has an approach trail for AT thru-hikers? The southern terminus at Springer Mountain is a short 8.5-miles away making this an accessible destination for ATers. ATers can check in at the park and receive helpful advice before continuing on their 2,150 mile Appalachian Trail hike.

Even if you’re not hiking the AT you can find the trailhead behind the Visitors Center that is marked by a stone archway marking the start of life changing journeys for many hikers.

Amicalola Falls

After you leave the visitor center head to the falls. This is the centerpiece of the park and likely the number one reason for state park visits.

Its name is said to be from the Cherokee dialect and translating it to English roughly means “Tumbling Water” which is pretty accurate. The water drops an impressive 729 feet with seven cascades. 

And even though you’d never think Georgia could have one of the tallest waterfalls, Amicalola comes in as the 3rd tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi.

There is a large parking lot at the top of the falls. It’s a short walk from the parking lot to scenic views from the viewing bridge and reflection pool. This bridge spans a small creek which is the headwaters of this amazing waterfall.

It’s deceptive because you’d never guess that within seconds those drops of water will soon go from calm and gentle to chaos and power as it makes the 700+ foot drop.

However, to really embrace all that is Amicalola Falls you’ll either have to walk down 425 steps (remember if you go down, ya gotta come back up) or jump back in your car, drive to the next parking area which is significantly smaller, pray a spot is available, and enjoy a leisurely stroll to the bottom of the falls. 

The path from the smaller parking lot will lead you across the middle of the falls. Here, you can stand on the walkway and feel the force of nature. It’s amazing!!

You can continue to the bottom of the falls with only another 175 stairs for more spectacular views.

If you’re mathing, that would be a total of 600 steps from the very bottom of the falls to the very tippy top.

Honestly, you really need to see the falls from both the top and the bottom. I mean, look at that view! In fall it’s a spectacular display of colors.

Wooded Campsites

Nothing better than waking up on top of a mountain when you camp at one of the 24 campsites. Each site is roomy offering some privacy from your neighbors.

There is an updated comfort station with laundry facilities and ADA accessible restrooms and showers within the campground.

Glamping

There are 4 safari-tent style glamping sites available at the park. Two of the tents offer a king bed with 2 bunk beds, perfect for families. The other two tents offer 2 queen beds, All the glamping tents have the following amneties:

• Keurig Coffee maker
• Mini fridge
• Rugs, lamps, diffuser and other home decor
• Electrical outlets to charge your devices
• Your own Ceiling Fan, Residential A/C & Heating Unit.
• Your Glampsite will also include 2 hammocks, a wood fire ring, a charcoal grill with a cooking grate, string lights, 2 camp chairs, and a picnic table.

Cabins

There are 14 cabins available at the park for groups of all sizes. Each cabin has heating and air conditioning, decks, fireplaces and satellite TV. Plus some of the cabins are ADA accessible and pet friendly 

The cabins are located in 2 different spots, there are Wooded Mountain Top Cabins or Creek Side Below the Falls Cabins.

Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge

The mountain resort features panoramic views of the surrounding area and comfortable resort-style rooms.  Lodge Room types include King, double Queen, Mountainview Lofts and several suite options.

Len Foote Hike Inn:

While it’s not a park of Amicalola Falls State park, the park is the trailhead for Len Foote Hike Inn.

However, finding the perfect waterside campsite isn’t always as straightforward as it seems. There are certain signs to look out for that will ensure you get the most out of your camping experience.

So when you’re searching for your dream campsite by the water, where do you start? Right here! We’ve created a list of tips and steps you can take toward identifying a waterside campsite that ticks every box.

How To Find The Perfect Waterside Camping Spot

There are plenty of campsites that are right by lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and even oceans. But simply seeing water and pitching your tent right by it can have undesirable and sometimes downright dangerous results.

For instance, many natural bodies of water attract mosquitoes or may not be safe to swim in. Others may have tides that threaten to submerge your camping ground.

However, when you know what you’re looking for, identifying an ideal campsite by the water can be an easy and straightforward process. Once you know how to do it, you’ll always have the advantage of finding gorgeous rivers, lakes, or oceans to pitch your tent next to.

1. Prioritize elevation and distance

When searching for an ideal waterside camping spot, one of the first things you need to look for is elevation. Your tent and camping area should always be elevated well above the nearest waterline.

Before pitching your tent, look for an area that is around 150-200 feet away from where the river or lake begins. Aim for a bit further if you are camping by the ocean, as tides can wreak havoc on your camping zone. But putting a bit of distance between you and the closest waterline is always a good strategy for protecting yourself against sudden changes in water levels due to dam releases or heavy rainfall.

2. Look for natural barriers

Natural barriers are another important thing to look out for when considering where to pitch your waterside tent. Empty clearings with signs of erosion will offer very little protection in the event of seasonal flooding, so aim for areas that have boulders, trees, or sections of vegetation around them.

It’s also a good idea to look for signs of a recent high watermark or tide. Often, debris will wash up to the highest point so you can see where you need to camp beyond.

3. Assess the color of the water

If you want to find your dream campsite by the water, it’s important to assess the quality and coloration of that water. The cleaner and clearer it is, the more likely it is to be good to swim in and the prettier it will look for sunset and sunrise viewing.

Most natural rivers and lakes are clear, which is a generally good sign. And if you are on official campsite grounds, it is usually very unlikely that the surrounding water is contaminated. But here are some signs you can look for when determining how clean a wild body of water actually is:

● Avoid bad-smelling water
● Avoid very murky or slimy-feeling water
● Avoid warm, stagnant, or slow-moving water
● Don’t swim with an open wound
● Look for a healthy ecosystem of bugs and amphibians
● Look for cool, clear, moving water

Generally speaking, the clearer, colder, and more active-flowing a body of water is, the more likely it is to clean. Stagnant, discolored, and off-smelling water is likely to be contaminated.

4. Research local water behavior

Strong, tall, healthy vegetation is a clear sign of a quality nearby water source. Not only that but camping around trees can drastically improve your camping experience, from providing shade during midday heat to makeshift laundry lines and all manner of campsite operations.

When assessing the grounds of your campsite, make ample trees as much of a priority as a nearby water supply. You’ll stay cool throughout the day, have more options for tent set-ups, and have a more verdant and beautiful campsite to enjoy.
