Enjoy Lake View Cemetery—Cleveland’s Outdoor Museum

Lake View Cemetery has been compared to an outdoor museum, and for good reason. The elaborate grave markers, monuments, and chapels located on the grounds provide some of the most stunning funerary architecture in Ohio.

Highlights of the cemetery include the impressive James A. Garfield Memorial, which is the final resting place of the twentieth president of the United States; Wade Memorial Chapel, whose interior was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York; and the eerie Haserot angel, which looks as though it has black tears streaming down its face.

Catch the Buzz on Buzzard Day

As proof that Clevelanders will celebrate anything, I give you Buzzard Day in Hinckley. The day starts with a scrumptious all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, followed by a different kind of arts and craft show filled with the interesting and unusual.

After browsing, head out on the city streets for some good old- fashioned games. A guest buzzard makes a special appearance at the park during the spotting event.

Experience Wizbang! A Circus Like No Other

Locals Danielle and Jason Tilk have taken their oddball sense of humor, placed it on steroids, and created a memorable, one-of-a-kind, knee-slapping fun circus like no other.

Dubbed the Wizbang!, the circus, which started out performing for small audiences, has now grown to include bigger theaters.

Wizbang! is a pop-up theater that entertains guests with outrageous antics, circus acts, dance, music, cabaret, and nonstop fun.

The one thing to expect during a Wizbang! show is the unexpected. From one act to the next, you never know what will happen, but you know you’ll have fun finding out.

Meet Fuzzy, Giant Monsters at the Cleveland Kurentovanje

Kurentovanje (koo-rahn-toh-VAHN-yay), a Slovenian-style Mardi Gras, is held each winter in the Slovenian neighborhood. During the one-day festival, the streets fill with vendors, activities, food, and music.

The highlight of the festival is the parade, which features the release of Kurent, a seven-foot-tall abominable snowman–looking creature wearing bells, feathers, and streamers, whose job it is to chase away winter and usher in spring.

Seriously, does life get any better than attending a festival that celebrates a Yeti adjunct creature? I think not!

Prepare to Get Messy with the Polish Boy

What’s a Polish Boy? Well, it’s unlike anything else—a marriage of kielbasa, French fries, coleslaw, and Barbeque sauce.

This messy creation is available around town, and a few joints even offer their own unique rendition of the Polish Boy.

Head over to Hot Sauce Williams to try their verison topped with their special sauce. Best known for their appearance on Man v. Food in which the Polish Girl (like the Polish Boy but add a helping of pulled pork on top) was featured.

Of course, there are many other locations throughout the area that serve out their own version of the Polish Boy. Tip–Be sure to grab lots of napkins, it’s going to get messy.

Cheer On Your Favorite Caterpillar at the Woollybear Festival

In the science world, the woollybear is a fuzzy little caterpillar. In the Vermilion, Ohio, world, it’s a reason to throw a really big festival.

The Woollybear Festival, which happens every fall, is one of the largest one-day festivals in the entire state.

The huge parade is the star, well besides the Woollybear, of course, of this festival and lasts almost two hours and includes pets, marching bands, radio and TV personalities, vintage cars, floats, a royal court, and so much more.

Unique to this festival is the opportunity to cheer on your favorite woollybear in the Woollybear 500 Race.

Delve into the World of Rock and Roll

Immerse yourself in the world of rock and roll in the nationally renowned Rock and Roll Hall fo Fame museum full of memorabilia that preserves the history of “rock and roll,” a term popularized by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed in 1951.

Stroll through exhibits packed with instruments played by the artists, lyrics hand-scribbled on everything from napkins to notebooks, gold records, and stage outfits.

Step Inside The World’s Largest Geode

Rock hounds and gem collectors will be astounded to discover that the world’s largest geode can be found a short drive and ferry trip away from Cleveland.

Located on South Bass Island, Crystal Cave lies beneath the surface of Heineman’s Winery, Ohio’s oldest family-owned and -operated winery.

Tour guides lead visitors on an adventure forty feet below the surface to share how the cave was discovered when digging a well and how that discovery saved the winery during Prohibition.

How to View the Stars Tonight

Located on the campus of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Shafran Planetarium and Mueller Observatory take stargazing to a whole new level.

We try to take a break every couple of hours during long road trips and we are always looking for odd roadside attractions.

I found these roadside attractions along I-80 that make a great place to stop and stretch your legs for a few minutes. Don’t miss these roadside attractions along I-80.

I’m sharing some of the best stops from New York to San Francisco.

Roadside Attractions I-80 Pennsylvania

The Boulder Field, Lake Harmony, PA

Get out and stretch at this boulder field in Pennsylvania.

There are different sized and shaped rocks, some up to 26-feet long in a field that was created by glacial action.

This is a great spot to get out of the car for a bit. Be sure to wear good shoes.

T-Rex and Bigfoot, DuBois, PA

I found Bigfoot in Pennsylvania!!!! Now I can say I spotted Bigfoot. You can find him at DooLittles Station. In addition to Bigfoot, you’ll find his friend, T-Rex. Be sure to grab lunch or a treat while you’re there.

Sharon, Pennsylvania: Daffin’s Chocolate Kingdom

Chocolate lovers are going to love this stop. A 400-pound turtle, frog, deer and other woodland creatures. So very sweet.

If you have some extra time, head over to Winterset, IA and visit the Bridges of Madison County. It’s about 20 minutes south of I-80 and worth the stop if there’s time. A fun stop to see the covered bridges.

This used to be the smallest town in America with a population of 1, but that resident left over a decade ago and it’s now considered a ghost town.

Pine Bluffs, Wyoming: Tee Pee House

Shores & Islands Ohio Highlights

Volstead Bar

This speakeasy is probably one of my favorite places to go for a great cocktail and to relax. Only noted by its green door and the red and green light bar in the window (red means no seats are available) it is an easy place to miss, but once you find it you will quickly fall in love and want to stay.

Cedar Point

Home to the tallest, fastest and most exhilarating coasters in the world. If you need an adrenaline rush this is the place to go.

I’m not a fan of coasters, but my friends that are absolutely LOVE going to Cedar Point numerous times throughout the summer.

Five Water Parks

The Sandusky area is home to five water parks and also takes the honor of having the largest indoor water park in the Midwest.

Head over to Kalahari Resorts to experience the largest water park and so much more. It’s definitely a resort worth visiting.

There are three indoor water parks at Great Wolf Lodge, Castaway Bay and Kalahari and two outdoor water parks at Cedar Point Shores and Monsoon Lagoon.

Lake Erie Islands

There are three islands off the shores of Sandusky. 

All of them offer something a little different, but they are all worth a visit. Put-In-Bay (South Bass Island) is probably the most popular destination and has plenty to offer singles, couples & families.

Kelleys Island offers lots of green space, but fewer resources than South Bass Island, but is lovely to visit.

Middle Bass Island is home to a state park and glacier grooves which are absolutely worth a visit.

The Goodtime I provides beautiful sunset cruises with views of Cedar Point and the Lake Erie shore.

A 2 hour cruise includes live entertainment as well as happy hour drinks and pizza available for purchase.

This is a great way to close out your adventure filled day in Sandusky.

Hike Sheldon’s Marsh

Located off of US-6 this nature area is a hidden gem in the region. Home to a variety of birds, butterflies and wildlife you’ll want to bring your camera for your hike.

If you can find a nature guide to go with you the experience will be that much richer as they are able to spot and identify so many animals and birds along the path.

The hike is an easy 1/2 mile, one way, on a paved path. When you get towards the end of the path take the trail to the left to go out to the Lake Erie shore.

Explore Historic Downtown Sanduskuy

Explore Washington Park, downtown architecture, Schade-Mylandar Plaza, Facer Park, and the Lake Erie waterfront.

Be sure to find the garden clock and note the date. Every day an employee changes the date. It is a great place to document your visit to Shores & Islands.

Go Birding

Did you know Sandusky is the Warbler Capital of the World? From Magee Marsh to Old Woman Creek, you’ll discover so many reasons to spend another day in Shores & Islands Ohio, one of the nation’s best areas for birding.

Each year, the Biggest Week in American Birding happens in the Sandusky area. Make sure to mark your calendar for next May when you can join birders from around the world to explore American Birding.

Bike Sandusky

A Pedego Electric bike rental is a great way to experience Sandusky and beyond! The nearby bike trails are safe and breathtakingly beautiful.

Sandusky Mini Lighthouse Tour

There are a dozen mini lighthouses strategic placed around the Sandusky area.

Take an hour or two and see how many you can find. 

Marblehead Lighthouse

When your done with the your mini lighthouse tour head to Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.

This is the second smallest, but one of the most popular, State Parks in Ohio.  It is said that the lighthouse is the most frequently photographed building in the state.

Fun On The Islands – Ferry Services

First you’ll need to plan transportation to the islands. There are two ferry choices and which one you pick will really depend on where you want to go and if you’d like to take your car or not.

I recommend not taking a car as golf carts really are the transportation of choice once you’re on island. 

Millers Ferry

If you want to take a car to the island or you’d like a shorter ferry ride Millers Ferry is the way to go. Millers Ferry departs from Catawba Island and takes 18 minutes to go over to Put-In-Bay/South Bass Island.

Millers Ferry also transport passengers to Middle Island  which is a 40 minute cruise. This island is known as the “Relaxing Island for Active People.” The Lake Erie Island home of historic Lonz Winery and State Park, kayaking & swimming beach, nature preserves, restaurants, lodging & camping. 

Jet Express

This Jet Express is a passenger only ferry and takes about 40 minutes to go to the islands. It makes stops at Cedar Point, Kelleys Island,  and Put-In-Bay/South Bass Island. It departs from either downtown Sandusky or Port Clinton.

Fun On The Islands – Which Island to Visit

Put-In-Bay/South Bass Island

Put-in-Bay, a Victorian era village that offers family fun, outdoor recreation, and special events. I think one of the best thing about Put-in-Bay is the main means of transportation—-golf carts!!!

The island is home to two world’s biggest attractions that you absolutely do not want to miss. 

Hop in your golf cart and head over to Crystal Cave to stand in the World’s Largest Geode

The World’s Longest Permanent Bar is the 405-ft-10-in-long. counter in the Beer Barrel Saloon. Belly up to that bar and order yourself a cold one. 

Of course, you should also explore the history of the island by visiting Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial operated by the National Park Service.

The memorial was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812, and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. There are also really great views from the top.

Middle Bass Island

This island is known as the “Relaxing Island for Active People.” The Lake Erie Island home of historic Lonz Winery and State Park, kayaking & swimming beach, nature preserves, restaurants, lodging & camping.

Kelleys Island

The largest of the three islands Kelley’s Island is the perfect escape for nature and bird lovers as well as those looking for a quiet getaway. Here you’ll find a  sandy state park beach, a popular winery and brewery, and historic homes.

Fun Around Shores and Islands Ohio – Port Clinton

Safari Wildlife Park

Drive to Port Clinton and drive through the Safari Wildlife Park where you get up close and personal with some adorable animals. 

Plus they have giraffes and since the likelihood of me actually getting to African to see them in their natureal habitat is slim to none, I’m grateful I can see these majestic animals here. 

Marblehead Lighthouse

Don’t skip on visiting Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes.

The lighthouse is open during the week for tours. I love how it is built right on the rock. I highly recommend visiting both places.

Fun Around Shores and Islands Ohio – Sandusky and Beyond

Merry-Go-Round Museum 

Feast your eyes on intricately carved “painted ponies,” and don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch one of the master carvers bring one of these beautiful pieces of historical art back to life.

Climb aboard the working “fully restored” Allan Herschell Carousel with the band organ playing and enjoy a throwback to childhood. 

Oh, and while you’re there, ask about the paranormal activity rumored to take place within the walls of this former Sandusky post office turned museum!

Schoepfle Gardens

A 77 acres of botanical gardens and natural woodland bordered on one side by the Vermilion River located in Wakeman. There is a 2-mile hiking trail that is worth walking after you are done smelling the flowers. About a 40-minute drive from Sandusky.

Seneca Caverns

While not immediately in the downtown area, Seneca Caverns is just a short 30 minute drive south.

It is one of  largest underground caverns in the area, and considered to be one of America’s most fascinating geological wonders.

An hour guided tour takes you through the “The Earth Crack” and view “Ole Mist’ry River“, the crystal clear flowing stream which is part of the vast ground-water system which underlies the surrounds region.

The cave is always a cool 54 degrees so dress accordingly and where comfortable shoes. Note-there are lots of stairs involved so check in with your knees to see if there up to the task.

Firelands Adventure Tours

If you’d prefer a guided tour experience in the area Firelands Adventure Tours has your back.They offer 6 different tours on a regular basis and two seasons tours. Tours range from wine and beer to the underground railroad and museums. 

Seasons tours include Haunted Sandusky and Holiday Lights. Two great reasons to come back for a visit in the winter.

Book A Stay At Castaway Bay

This waterpark hotel is located right outside of Cedar Points gates.

Castaway Bay is a fun hotel that families with young children will love. 

The waterpark is the highlight of your stay at Castaway Bay where it’s always 82 degrees.  Don’t miss the 100,000 gallon Castawave Pool and be sure to experience the plunges and twists of Rocket’s Canopy Coaster – Ohio’s water coaster.  There is also an area for the littles in your group.

Six on-site restaruants, an arcade, escape room, black light mini golf, and mini bowling all await when you’re done at the waterpark.

And let’s not forget the rooms.  Each floor of the hotel is themed to match a specific island setting – Air, Land and Sea.

However, we’re sharing a list of places that we recommend that will make this decision so much easier. 

8 Places You’ll Want To Dine in Shores and Islands Ohio

Zuppaman 

Don’t let its location in a strip mall deter you from grabbing lunch. The colorful logo window design grabbed our attention, but its the customer service and fantastic food that has us recommending this place to everyone we know. 

We ordered the Turkey Jive and the Cheesy Pickle with a garlic/black pepper aioli. Yes and yes!!! It’s going to be hard to order something else because those sandwiches were so good. 

Oh, and if you prefer soup and/or salad they have a number of choices available.

Small City Taphouse

Small City Taphouse offers over 40 beers on tap and an asian infused menu.

Great decor, high ceilings, large seating and bar area.

This is a fantastic place to have a drink and dinner while visiting with friends.

OH Taco ?

Located inside the Hotel Kilbourne in downtown Sandusky. OH Taco is an authentic Mexican restaurant and tequila bar with over 75 different tequilas.

You’ll find everything from house-made Guacamole and Tacos to a gigantic Quesadilla and Burrito. OH Taco is also known for having the “best damn margaritas.”

Saucy Brew Works

One of the newest additions to downtown Sandusky, Saucy Brew Works started in Cleveland and expanded to Sandusky.

Here you’ll find 16 fresh beers on tap, along with fine wines and signature cocktails. Food offerings include food their award-winning New Haven-style Apizza.

The Saucy coffeehouse has a full selection of craft coffee offerings including our single-origin house roast, pour overs, and espresso.

Volstead Bar

Chances are you would pass right past this speakeasy without a second glance.

There is no big sign, no big banner announcing its presence, just a green door on a nondescript building.

However, if you look up you will see a small neon bar sign perched on the ledge of a window. When the speakeasy is open the bar sign is lit up.

Be sure to check the set of lights next to the bar sign to see if seats are available inside. Note, seating is very limited. 5 green lights = at least 5 seats, 3 green lights = 3 seats and a red light means don’t enter.

No cell phones, no outside worries, just you, some friends, and a retro cocktail or two.

Seriously, if you go no other place in the region, go here. When I hang up my traveling shoes I’m opening a speakeasy just like this.

The Upper Deck (Put In Bay)

Great views of the water with indoor and outdoor seating.

Near the ferry landing and a great place to people watch.

The lobster bisque is a must order.

The Forge (Put In Bay)

This restaurant is in an old forge building and original building materials and blacksmithing tools are used in the décor.

Old tools on the wall, an anvil in the hostess station and more.

The Forge is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and probably one of the only places on the island to order a delicious crepe.

The Goat Soup & Whiskey (Put In Bay)

The name alone should be enough to bring you here, but it’s the food and drinks that make sure you return.

A fun place to dine when you visit Put In Bay.

Outdoor covered seating is a nice bonus.

The raspberry basil mojito was a hit during my visit and the perch fish tacos are a local and tourist favorite.

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF CEDAR POINT

Started in 1870 Cedar Point is the second oldest amusement park in the United States.

Originally it began as a beach destination where families enjoyed the golden sandy beaches of Lake Erie.

As it grew in popularity rides were added to the park.

In 1978 the Gemini roller coaster was opened and was the first roller coaster that went above the trees.

Cedar Point continued to build the fastest, tallest, and biggest adrenaline filled coasters ever since.

They have been voted the best Amusement Park in the WORLD 13 times and it shows in the pride and attention to family fun that shines through at Cedar Point.

CEDAR POINT TODAY

There are 70+ rides, 18 coasters, 8 theatrical shows, character interactions, and over 35 places to grab a drink or bite to eat.

I like the rides that stay on the ground so I’m a big fan of merry-go-rounds (Cedar Point has 3), the train, and cars that drive around a track.

Even though I like the mild side of the park I still have a great time visiting.

CEDAR POINT FOR ADRENALINE JUNKIES and TEENS

If you feel the need for thrills and speed this is the park for you!

The tallest and fastest coaster at Cedar Point is Millennium Force which comes in at a dizzying 310′ tall and moves at speeds up to 93 mph. It’s a quick ride at only 2 minutes long.

Coming in just behind Millennium Force for speed is Valravn at 75 mph and climbs to 223′. This ride lasts 2 minutes and 23 seconds.

CEDAR POINT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

For families with young children there are over 30 rides and attractions just for children.

Be sure to check out Kiddie Kingdom, Planet Snoopy and Camp Snoopy.

The kids will be thrilled with all the great rides.

To ensure you have a worry free visit to the park Cedar Point offers a kid tracking wristband system.

If your child is ever separated from you they can go to the nearest park employee and be reunited with you in no time at all.

FUN BEYOND CEDAR POINT AMUSEMENT PARK

In addition to the amusement park, there are 2 marinas, 4 resorts, an RV park, cabin rentals, and a mile of sandy beach.

Cedar Point Shores Water Park is located right next to Cedar Point and is a great way to cool off during the hottest part of the day.

The park is 18 acres of outdoor water park fun and has 4 capsule drop slides.

We took the Jet Express ferry from Sandusky to Put-in-Bay, a quick 40 minute ride with a short stop at Kelley’s Island to pick up and drop off passengers.

One of the best ways to get around either island is by golf carts, but those that spend a significant amount of time on either island know that golf carts come in all kinds of styles.

This is just a fun post to showcase some of the cool golf carts we spotted while visiting the island.

Golf Carts of Put-In-Bay

Growing up in Michigan I have been to Mackinaw Island numerous times. Mackinaw Island is known for being a car free island and transportation is by bike or, the main mode, horses.

Just as Mackinaw Island is known for its horses, Put-In-Bay is known for its golf carts.

And, yes, there are lots and lots of golf carts on Put-in-Bay.

 Instead of cars, golf carts line the streets of Put-In-Bay.

To be fair, most of the golf carts are just the plain, run of the mill, standard golf carts.
 

Now those standard carts do come in a variety of sizes. From carts that carry 4 passengers to ones that carry 8 or more people. 
 

 However, some residents either have luxury models or have taken the time to make their golf cart unique. I’m kind of a fan of this futurist looking white one.

 This takes beer cart to a fun new level.

Pretty sure this one might be able to go off road for a bit more fun.

Kind of looks like the limo of golf carts.
 

Even the shade covers for the carts add a bit of flair to them.

 There is even an awesome cart for the National Parks Service. YAY!!

When you visit Put-In-Bay, OH be sure to rent a golf cart. They are available by the hour or by the day.

10 ADVENTURES FOR FAMILY FUN IN SHORES AND ISLANDS, OHIO 

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SANDUSKY

Explore Washington Park, downtown architecture, Schade-Mylandar Plaza, Facer Park, and the Lake Erie waterfront.

Be sure to find the garden clock and note the date. Every day an employee changes the date. It is a great place to document your visit to Lake Erie Shores and Islands.

MERRY-GO-ROUND MUSEUM

Sure to be a hit with young and old alike. A ride on the indoor Merry-Go-Round is a must.

The museum is full of antique carousel animals which is really interesting to see. Be sure to ask the docent which one is worth the most.

I think you will be shocked by the answer, I know I was.

There is also a workshop area that is very interesting. If you’ve ever wondered how carousel animals are carved this is the place to visit.

CEDAR POINT

I’d be remiss not to include Cedar Point in my list. It is the perfect destination whether you love roller coasters, riding family fun rides or people watching while being the “bag holder” (hey, THAT is completely acceptable…says the designated “bag holder”)

Cedar Point has something for everyone in the family.

NORTH COAST PARASAIL AND JET SKI

Located on Cedar Point Beach take your adventures to the next level with a parasail and jet ski experience. Parasailing gives a great birds eye view of the park and downtown Sandusky while a jet ski takes you along the shore for a different view of the area.

CRYSTAL CAVE

Stand in the world’s largest Geode. All you need is the ability to walk down and then back up 45 steps to access the cave, but it’s well worth it.

The cave holds about 25 people and the tour is about 10-15 minutes long. It’s not very much time, but how many of your friends can say they’ve stood in the largest geode in the world? 

Be sure to stop by the on-site winery and try a glass of Catawba wine before you leave.

HIKE SHELDON’S MARSH

Located off of US-6 this nature area is a hidden gem in the region. Home to a variety of birds, butterflies and wildlife you’ll want to bring your camera for your hike.

If you can find a nature guide to go with you the experience will be that much richer as they are able to spot and identify so many animals and birds along the path.

The hike is an easy 1/2 mile, one way, on a paved path. When you get towards the end of the path take the trail to the left to go out to the Lake Erie shore.

VISIT PUT IN BAY AND KELLEYS ISLAND

If you can’t escape to the Caribbean take Miller Ferry over to Put In Bay or Kelleys Island. Both islands are fun, relaxing, offer good food and so much to do.

Golf carts are the favored mode of transportation on either island and are a lot of fun to drive. Please note: If you are traveling with young children during the weekend I would recommend Kelleys Island over Put In Bay.

Put In Bay is a lot of fun, but has been known to be a  bit of a frat party on summer weekends. Of course, my last visit was pre pandemic so maybe things have changed since then.

PERRY’S VICTORY AND INTERNATIONAL PEACE MEMORIAL

Built to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812 and to celebrate peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. 

Take an elevator to the top and enjoy the fabulous views of the island and of Lake Erie. On a clear day you can see all the way to Canada.

KAYAKING AT SOUTH BASS ISLAND STATE PARK.

Explore parts of Put In Bay that are only accessible by kayak.  Enjoy a few hours on the water while kayaking into coves and places that boats cant’ access.

Miller Ferry offers both passenger and car ferries to the islands for a very reasonable price.

Pets are allowed so feel free to bring Fido with you on your visit.

But Sandusky isn’t all rollercoasters.

In fact, Sandusky and the surrounding area (a.k.a. Shores & Islands Ohio) is filled with good eats and great fun.

There are so many reasons that you’ll want to visit Sandusky this summer.

There is fun for everyone from the youngest to the oldest in your group.

Paddle Bar & Daiquiri Dock 

It’s so much more than a sporting goods store. Paddle & Climb is all about an active lifestyle. Conveniently located right along Sandusky Bay. 

Head inside to climb their 32′ climbing wall, grab any outdoor gear you need to update, replace or add to your gear and then head outside to sip a daiquiri while enjoying views of Sandusky Bay and, if you’re there on the right night, maybe some live music.

The Sandusky State Theatre 

This beautiful, historical landmark holds shows and special events all year long. You’ll be able to enjoy all sorts of entertainment from youth productions, to a symphony, to classic movie showings.

The State Theatre also offers a children’s educational series and workshops that invest in the next generation.

Also, the theater is reportedly haunted making it one of my favorite places to visit 🙂

Sunset Cruise 

Hop aboard the Goodtime I cruise ship for a beautiful, 2 hour trip around Lake Erie at sunset.

There’s nothing quite like a midwest sunset! While soaking up the stunning views, enjoy light entertainment and Happy Hour specials.

Merry-Go-Round Museum 

Learn all about the art and history of the carousel, and step back into childhood by climbing onto the beautifully restored Allan Herschel Carousel.

Feast your eyes on intricately carved “painted ponies,” and don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch one of the master carvers bring one of these beautiful pieces of historical art back to life.

Oh, and while you’re there, ask about the paranormal activity rumored to take place within the walls of this former Sandusky post office turned museum!

Maritime Museum of Sandusky 

Right across from the Battery Park Marina is a perfect place to learn all about the rich maritime history of Sandusky. You’ll travel back in time to the early days of boating, fishing, and shipping on Lake Erie through several interactive exhibits.

You’ll also learn about a variety of topics closely related to maritime history including Sandusky’s connection to the Underground Railroad and everything there is to know about wetlands. On your way out, be sure to step foot on one of the many vessels on display.

Ghostly Manor Thrill Center 

What started as a haunted house has now become an entertainment center that literally has something for everyone, including mini golf, roller skating, an arcade, bounce houses, a jungle gym and more!

All year long you can enjoy being scared half to death walking through the featured haunted house, or test your bravery in the 4D Motion Theater. This place holds all the thrill you can imagine in one huge, dragon-laden castle!

It’s really no wonder it was featured on The Travel Channel’s “Best Places I’ve Ever Been” series.

Cedar Point 

What is a trip to Sandusky, Ohio without a day or two (or three!) spent at one of the biggest and most thrilling amusement parks in the world? Cedar Point has 18 world-class roller coasters that are so diverse, you’ll never want to leave.

The Roller Coaster Capital of the World is so much more than just amazing, unforgettable roller coasters, though! There’s carnival-type rides, family rides, kids rides, special events, shows, and even dinosaurs!

To cool off, visit the Cedar Point Shores Water Park for even more thrills or spend the day at Cedar Point beach, lounging in the pool or jet skiing on Lake Erie. Yep, one day at Cedar Point just won’t be enough!

Hiking Trails

There are so many nature preserves that offer hiking trails along Lake Erie. One of our favorite is Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve located near Sawmill Creek Resort.

Simply Google “Nature Preserves Near Me” and then click on the map to see all the locations available. Be sure to pack bug spray and water.

Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center

Located on the quiet side of Put-in-Bay, visit the famous indoor turtle pond, be fascinated with the observation beehive, improve your birding skills with the birdwatching window, learn about island geology, or explore our exhibits of North American animal diversity and our nature trail and ponds.

There is also a short nature trail at the center.

Goofy Golf

Enjoy a fun day out with the family. Show off your mad driving skills with go-karts on the radical raceway or big track. There is also a junior big track for younger kids.

Tee off at two different 18-hole mini golf courses, Old Town and/or The Lost Castle. 

If things get too hot, jump into the bumper boats for a refreshing activity.

Don’t miss the indoor, air-conditioned arcade for even more family fun.

This is easily a 2-3 hour visit while you are in the Sandusky area.

Beagle Bay Knot Works

It may have started with a bracelet, but today Beagle Bay Knot Works is know home to all the things about nautical knots. We aren’t boaters by any stretch but I loved watching the knot making in process.

Beagle Bay offers quality cordage. rope, tools and books to pass down those knot tying techniques to the next generation. 

There are even classes to tie one on with them.

Market on Main

If you happen to find yourself in the area on the last Saturday of the month between June – September be sure to visit Main Street in Huron, Ohio. Located just a few minutes East of Sandusky.

This charming area creates a unique shopping district where brick and mortar merchants welcome a variety pop-up market artisans/merchants.

Seneca Caverns

While not immediately in the downtown area, Seneca Caverns is just a short 30 minute drive south.

Located in Bellevue, it is one of  largest underground caverns in the area, and considered to be one of America’s most fascinating geological wonders.

Take an hour guided tour of up to seven levels of the cavern system. While on the tour you’ll walk and climb natural stone steps and pathways through the “The Earth Crack” and view “Ole Mist’ry River“, the crystal clear flowing stream which is part of the vast ground-water system which underlies the surrounds region.

The cave is always a cool 54 degrees so dress accordingly and where comfortable shoes. Note-there are lots of stairs involved so check in with your knees to see if there up to the task.

Firelands Adventure Tours

If you’d prefer a guided tour experience in the area Firelands Adventure Tours has your back.They offer 6 different tours on a regular basis and two seasons tours. Tours range from wine and beer to the underground railroad and museums. 

Seasons tours include Haunted Sandusky and Holiday Lights. Two great reasons to come back for a visit in the winter.

Tours are offered daily.

Main Street Vermillion

Located a quick 30-minute drive east of Sandusky you’ll find Main Street Vermillion. This historic photogenic downtown complete with a lighthouse is straight out of a Hallmark movie.

From boutique shopping to great eats and incredible views. Be sure to swing by before making the drive back home.

Zuppaman 

Stumbled across this gem after a quick Google search of “deli’s near me” and I was not disappointed. Located in a strip mall the colorful logo window design drew us right in. 

There are so many great choices and everything is made with top-quality ingredients.

I’ll just say this. Zuppaman’s is a 2-hour drive and I’m considering going for lunch on a pretty regular basis it was that good! 

We ordered the Turkey Jive and the Cheesy Pickle with a garlic/black pepper aioli. Yes and yes!!! It’s going to be hard to order something else because those sandwiches were so good. 

The Jive Turkey is Tender Turkey Breast Topped with Sage Stuffing, Cheddar Cheese Fried Potatoes, Cranberry Mayo on Ciabbatta Bread.

The Cheesy Pickle is Mozzarella Grilled Cheese on thick cut Butter Toasted Brioche with Dill Pickles, Bacon & Choice of Mayo/Aioli. Grab a lot of napkins because this is one messy sandwich but its soooo worth it. 

Emma and I split the sandwiches so we could try both. They are both sooo good, but if I had to pick a fave it’s the cheesy pickle for me. 

In addition to great sandwiches their customer service is a 10/10, which is hard to find lately.

Oh, and if you prefer soup and/or salad they have a number of choices available.

OH Taco ?

Located inside the Hotel Kilbourne in downtown Sandusky. OH Taco is an authentic Mexican restaurant and tequila bar with over 75 different tequilas.

You’ll find everything from house-made Guacamole and Tacos to a gigantic Quesadilla and Burrito. OH Taco is also known for having the “best damn margaritas.”

There are plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options as well. You’ll also want to try their “Not So Authentic Mexican” items such as Dawgitos, Fiesta Fries, and Wing Wednesdays.

Volstead Bar ?

Celebrate Sandusky’s history by being seriously the best speakeasy. I thoroughly enjoyed my all-time favorite Whiskey Sour inside this fascinating building full of historical Sandusky lore.

Small City Taphouse ?

Asian cuisine complimented by a huge selection of beers. Choose from 60 different beers on tap and more than 300 bottles. I recommend the sushi!

Dockside Cafe. ? 

The outdoor-only seating allows you to savor a nice, cold drink while enjoying live music and a stunning sunset across the Bay.

Firelands Winery ? 

This winery produces high-quality wines using locally grown grapes. Take a tour of the winery where you will have a balcony view to all of the inner workings. Tastings are included, of course!

Toft Dairy ?

This is Ohio’s oldest dairy. Inside the 76,000 square foot facility is the famous Toft’s Ice Cream Parlor. You’ll find more than 70 flavors of ice cream and yogurt all made with Toft’s own milk sourced from local farms.

It’s definitely worth stopping by for a cone full of delicious, or even a pint to take back to your hotel. “Because real ice cream tastes like Toft’s.” 

Moseley’s Public House ?

Located in Hotel Kilbourne but it can be accessed from the lobby or right from the lake. Grab your signature cocktail or ice cold beer and head to the roof for more stunning views of Lake Erie and the rollercoasters of Cedar Point against the horizon.

Traveling with family and/or friends you’re going to want to make a reservation at Sawmill Creek Resort. This newly remodeled resort is just waiting to welcome you.

The resort lies on 235 wooded acres. It’s a convenient walk or bike ride to the 472-acre Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve, which annually attracts about 300 bird species and provides the ideal habitat for an abundance of wildflowers.
