Now, I know the famous beach and the NASCAR races might be what brings you to Daytona Beach, with good reason, but there is so much more to do here. 

At minimum, you’ll want a long weekend, but if you can swing it a week would be best.

Daytona Beach is broken into two main areas, beach side and mainland.

The beach side is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River. 

The mainland is the area west of the Halifax River. 

Additionally, the Daytona Beach area includes the communities of Ormond-By-The-Sea, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, Wilbur-By-The-Sea, Ponce Inlet, Holly Hill and South Daytona.

DAYTONA BEACH BOARDWALK AND PIER

You absolutely must check out the boardwalk and pier at the beach. From adrenaline pumping rides to salt water candy to the clock tower and band shell.

This is iconic Daytona Beach and a must-see.

BIKE OR DRIVE THE BEACH 

You can rent pedal bikes from Blue Coast Shop Bicycle Rentals, but if you have a car you’ll want to drive the beach as well.

The hard packed sand makes it easy to do either.

Biking is very popular activity on the beach and it’s easy to see why so many people enjoy it. 

The only downside, the wind can be strong and make the ride a bit more of a struggle than you might like.

Be sure to check weather conditions before renting.

Plus, there is just something really memorable about biking along the Atlantic Ocean on one of the best beaches on the East Coast.

To drive along the beach, there are a number of entrances where you’ll pay a small fee.

Be sure to follow the signs and obey traffic laws the same as if you were on the road.

BEACH DAYS

One of the best things to do in Daytona Beach is to enjoy the beach.

Grab a good book, cooler packed with your favorite drinks, a beach umbrella and your beach chairs and plan an afternoon of pure rest and relaxation.

If it’s warm enough you could play in the surf, take a swim in the ocean, or even enjoy a paddle board adventure for a bit.

Personally, we spent a lot of time walking for long stretches along the beach. It was so relaxing and we’d walked miles without even realizing it.

SEE SEA TURTLES

From May – October is sea turtle season when these amazing animals head to the beach at night to lay their eggs in nests dug in the dry sand, then return to the sea.

Usually the nests are located up in the dune area of the beach and, most likely, have been roped off to save the nests. 

There is still plenty of beach to enjoy even during turtle season and the chance of seeing a sea turtle is the perfect reason to visit during the season.

ENJOY THE SPA AT THE SHORES RESORT AND SPA

Because you always deserve to pamper yourself when you’re on vacation. Order some chocolate covered strawberries to enjoy during your spa experience. 

We really liked the boutique spa at The Shores Resort and Spa. The entire staff was so friendly and accommodating. I would book another appointment here without hesitation.

If time allows plan an entire spa day with massage, facial and mani/pedi.

SIP AT SUNSET

Honestly, one of our favorite things to do is enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun kiss the horizon and say goodnight.

There are a couple great places to make this happen, Top of Daytona with 360 degree views from the 29th floor (the tallest buildings on the strip), Sky Rooftop Bar  with incredible views and NASCAR history, The Roof above Joe’s Crab Shack on the Daytona Beach Pier.

Additionally, any place along the Halifax River on the beach side or in the Ponce Inlet area along the water.

WHERE TO STAY IN DAYTONA BEACH

I’ll be sharing a longer post shortly, but we loved our stay at The Shores Resort & Spa. It is towards the Ponce Inlet end of the beach and was a bit quieter which I loved. 

The beach is gorgeous here and the pool deck at the resort is simply perfect with pools, swim up bar, fire pits and more.

At the resort they have everything you need. A  full service restaurant, boutique spa, Starbucks coffee, great location, oceanfront rooms and weekly evening entertainment.

Port St Joe is also the starting point for those visiting the ever-popular Cape San Blas with its uncrowded white sand beach and is also home to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. This is a great place to spend at least a day, but, fair warning, once there you may realize you never want to leave.

CAPE SAN BLAS LIGHTHOUSE

Built well over a 100 years ago the lighthouse ensured the safe journey for many ships along the cape. It survived vicious storms, Union troops, and salty weather all while being a beacon to passing vessels. In 2012, Mother Nature reclaimed the remaining shoreline forcing the lighthouse to close.

However, a community group came together to save this important part of the Cape’s story. In 2014 the lighthouse and its two Keepers’ Quarters and Oil House was moved from its location on the cape inland to Port St. Joe for preservation purposes.

Today, visitors can explore the houses, view exhibits and the brave can climb the 100+ steps to the top of this skeletal lighthouse. The views allow you to see for miles and it’s completely worth the climb.

I made the climb up the spiral metal staircase in no time at all and found myself ducking through the door onto the platform that circles the light. Now, I really hate heights, but I also love scenic views so it’s always a bit of a love/hate when I’m at the top of lighthouses.

Stepping out, the wind was strong, but I simply put my back to the wall and scooted along until I could see St. Joseph Bay. Once I could see the view, I snapped a quick photo and went right back inside and back down the stairs.

Some notes about climbing the Cape San Blas lighthouse:

• Wear close-toed shoes
• There are stair indicators painted on the walls letting you know how many more steps you have to go
• The staircase is a pretty tight spiral so use caution.
• There are a couple of landings where people can pass slower movers or those going in the reverse direction

Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center

The beaches around Port St. Joe are home to hundreds of sea turtles who make an annual pilgrimage to the shore to lay eggs.

Because of this, homeowners and businesses are diligent about keeping the shoreline dark. The lights out success is due in part to the work being done at the Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center.

The center works to educate, conserve, and protect. They offer a number of education classes, spearhead beach clean-ups, and organize volunteers to mark turtle nest so that they remain undisturbed by locals and visitors.

By doing one or two small things we can seriously make a difference in the health and wellness of our marine life. Let’s be honest, it’s up to all of us to make an impact.

Turtle Trail

You can pick up a free stainless steel straw from the visitor’s center when you find turtles on the turtle trail. The turtle sculptures are placed around town just waiting for you to take a selfie with it.

Take a photo of 6 different turtles, post the images to social media using #TurtleTrail and #InGulf, then stop by the visitors center and pick up your straw.  So easy to do and a fun way to do your part to help all marine life.

Donna Kay Shipwreck Cape San Blas

UPDATE: On August 23, 2021 the Donna Kay Shipwreck was deconstructed and removed from Cape San Blas. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to visit this popular spot while it was still on shore.  Leaving this section here so that others who didn’t have a chance to visit the Donna Kay can see images of the wreck.

If you want to see a really cool beachside attraction head out to Cape San Blas to explore the beached shipwreck of the Donna Kay, a shrimper/tug boat.

Stories vary on the shipwreck from when it happened to why it’s still there. All I know is that it makes a fun little adventure with you’re at the Cape.  The vessel is located near the southern tip of the Cape.

I don’t know the exact location as a local drove me there, but ask at the visitor’s center and they’ll be happy to share how to access the wreck.

PSJ Clear Kayak

For more water fun head over to PSJ Clear Kayak on St. Joseph Bay for a paddle when the weather is calm.  I’m an avid paddler, but even I won’t go out there when the winds are kicked up a bit. I was so bummed that I wasn’t able to kayak with them on my visit. I can’t think of anything more fun while kayaking that being able to watch the underwater marine life.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN PORT ST JOE

Back in Port St Joe take some time to shop along Reid Avenue. This historic downtown has delightful boutiques, restaurants, and the beach town vibe we all love. Stop in at the Indian Pass Raw Bar Uptown for fresh grilled oysters and shrimp, steamed lobster tails, some crab and corn chowder or even chicken wings and salad.

Grab a drink from the coolers or even pour your own beer from a tap. The restaurant works on an honor system for beverages. The open air kitchen lets you watch as your meal is prepared and the food is exactly what you’d expect from a seafood restaurant on the coast. Fresh and delicious!

For another great meal head over to Grille 19, the restaurant at St. Joseph Bay Golf Club. Grab a seat by the window to watch golfers perfect their swing, grab a cocktail from the bar and enjoy a leisurely dinner. When you’re at the coast you’re going to be spoiled by the freshest seafood. However, if seafood is not your thing there are many non-seafood options available.

Where To Stay

You can stay the night at any number of local vacation rental homes in the area. Cape San Blas has many options, but if a resort is more your style head over to the Sheraton Panama City Beach Resort.

Near Port St Joe

Add extra time to your visit to Florida’s Forgotten Coast with a visit to Carrabelle, the gateway for Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Note, you’ll need to wear closed-toe shoes and make sure you follow the instructors directions because hot glass is no joke.

There are a lot of great breakfast options but we recommend The Press, which has a fantastic selection of crepes and coffee, in a great downtown location or, for waterfront dining, head over to Bayou Joe’s for it’s laid-back ambiance and “Old Florida” charm plus an amazing selection breakfast selection.

Our recommendations for lunch is either Finn’s in Little Village for fresh tacos, burritos, and quesadillas or El Weirdo for even more taco options. Hey, what can we say, we love tacos.

For dinner we have two great choices, both of which are waterfront so yay for that, Uncle Ernie’s is upscale casual and a perfect little spot for a romantic dinner or Harrison’s Kitchen, located next to Hotel Indigo, which has great outdoor waterfront dining and tasty bites.

“Eat Fresh. But Local” is the theme at the Marianna City Farmers Market. This is where growers of local fruits and vegetables, honey, dairy products, and meats sell their goods. Jams and jellies, baked goods, crafts, and flowers can be found here, too. Open every Saturday.

Specialty Shops and Tastings

Southern Craft Creamery serves up the regionally popular ice cream from local Cindale Farms. (Marianna, FL)

Green Gate Olive Grove, the first olive grove in Florida, offers tastings of their house-made products. These include olive oils, infused vinegars, sauces, spices, and rubs. They also host and cater other special events. (Marianna, FL)

Tupelo honey is a true local product. Wewahitchka is the only place this famed sweetness is harvested.

This community was established in the mid-1800s by a son of Michigan (which makes it more near and dear to my heart). I’d be lying if I didn’t say I loved the connection between my state and St. Andrews. 

The plan was for St Andrews to become a major shipping port; however, that idea was never realized and instead became famous for its healthy sea baths and fishing industry.

What To Do in St. Andrews

Outdoor Farmers Market

I love going to farmer markets. Strolling around and finding fresh produce and local artisan products is one of my favorite things to do in new places.

If you happen to be here on a Saturday be sure to stop by the market between 8a and 1p.

Self-Guided Historic Walking Tour

This audio guided, via your cell phone, historic walking trail (scroll to St. Andrews) has ten stops, and shares the stories of yesterday. The trail is just over ½ mile long and can be completed at your leisure.

Panama City Publishing Company Museum
Drug Store and Mattie’s Motel

My favorite stops along the tour are Oaks by the Bay Park and Panama City Publishing Company Museum.

The park offers gorgeous views of the bay, carved trees that died in Hurricane Michael, bird identification signs for my birding friends and a really cool ground mural around a tree. 

The museum shares the history of how St Andrews got it start which is a really good story.

Be sure to plan your tour around the opening hours of the museum. That really will be a highlight of your experience.

Mural, Mural, On The Wall

During your walking tour keep an eye out for murals that bring pops of color to town. We found a number of murals along Beck Rd (the main street through town) and on the little side streets. If you love finding murals be sure to check out the Panama City Mural Trail. 

Don’t just look for the big murals, Historic St. Andrews has a number of mini murals scattered around that are simply adorable!

Boutique Shopping

You’re going to want to explore the boutiques in St. Andrews neighborhood. It offers such an eclectic mix of options.

Here are some of my favorites.

Sunjammers – This store is for my outdoor adventure friends. It has everything you need for your next adventure with a focus on water sports and kayaking.

Floriopolis. It’s a tiny art and culture storefront but worth a visit. This is an arts cooperative that works with lots of local artists, independently and as a group, to beautifying the town? 

They have a number of hands-on classes available and you can drop in when they are open to see what is going on. 

Their website will say they are only open on Wednesday but there’s often someone in the building. If you want to make sure they are open during your visit give them a call or check their Facebook page.

Gypsy Beach – A showcase for 30+ artists and vintage vendors. This is the place to find a unique treasure for you or for a gift. Also important to note that they are a great rainy day stop as they have a number of make and take art classes available.

Gypsy Willow – A unique, antiques boutique that has something for everyone. The store carries everything from incense and rock T-shirts to new and vintage apparel, and candles.

Folklore – This is the stop for all my witchy, metaphysical friends. The store offers crystals, herbs, essential oils, candles, and, of course, some magical items.

Little Indigo Spa – If you desire a bit of R&R during your visit be sure to schedule a massage at Little Indigo. If time doesn’t permit for a little spa indulgence, you can stop in and browse their apothecary and shop.

Attend Salty Dog Day

Any place that has a festival called the Salty Dog Day where they celebrate all things dogs is a must in my opinion.

During Salty Dog Day visit the market with dog merchandise vendors, veterinarians, groomers, a shot clinic, a microchip booth, treat stations, dog play area, food, music, shopping, and entertainment, as well as a blessing of the dogs, adoptions, a Pup Crawl throughout St. Andrews, a silent auction, raffles, and so much fun for dogs and their humans.

In 2023 the event was held in May. Be sure to follow Panama City Publishing Company museum Facebook for updates on the next event.

Be On The Lookout For

While strolling around St. Andrews be on the lookout for Little Libraries and this Butterfly Garden that is part of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail.

Where to Eat and Drink in St Andrews

The first two restaurants are a nice blend of shopping and dining in one area!

St Andrews Bodega

Brand new to St. Andrews and first on the list because wait until you see all this bodega has to offer. You’ll find artisanal cheeses and bread, a butcher and wine shop, PLUS a cafe with a gorgeous brunch menu. 

I can’t speak for anyone else, but a really late brunch is my favorite kind of meal. Not in the mood for brunch? They offer a lovely main menu worth trying.

Lunch and Shop at Little Village

Little Village is a whole shopping and dining vibe. You’ll find items from around the world, much of it fair trade, and from local artists.  

Additionally, you can grab a bite to eat from Finn’s Island Style Grub and then find a seat on the covered patio or in the sun, the choice is yours. This is a great place to have a leisurely lunch after all the walking. 

Stop by the Taproom for a Pint

Located across from the Oaks by the Bay park the Taproom offers up beers on tap both indoors and at their outdoor patio.

The outdoor bar has 33 taps vs the 21 taps inside and does not disappoint with its location, selection, and ambiance.

You’ll often find live music or trivia at the Taproom. This is a great gathering spot to meet with friends or to cool off with a cold brew.

Fresh Oysters at Hunt’s Oyster Bar

If you’re looking for some of the best and freshest oysters and seafood in the region, be sure to check out Hunt’s Oyster Bar. They are serving up ice cold oysters and seafood daily from Tarpon Dock Seafood Market.

Grab Breakfast at Bayou Joe’s

Ok, this isn’t technically in St. Andrews, it’s just down the road a bit, but I wanted to give a great option for breakfast and where to start your adventure and Bayou Joe’s is it.

Bayou Joe’s is a casual, laid-back restaurant on Massalina Bayou offering up scratch-made, mouth-watering, Southern breakfasts.

Because everything is made from scratch, you’re going to wait a little longer for your order, but it’s going to be worth it.

You’ll find limited seating on the deck and even fewer seats inside but you’re going to have to trust me when I say you’re going to want to dine here.

Enjoy your breakfast with a view of the drawbridge and marina. If you’re lucky (I was not, but heard stories), dolphins might even splash around in the bayou while you dine.

I’m just saying that if I lived locally, I would be drinking my morning coffee a couple of times a week on the deck of Bayou Joes.

Where to Stay 

There are no flagged hotels in St. Andrews, but there are a number of vacation rentals. I haven’t personally stayed at these, but I’m considering them for my next visit.

These are all a short walk to historic St. Andrews and very affordable.

Two others vacation rentals that have been recommended to me include:

• B Side – a darling two bedroom bungalow duplex that is walking distance to town.
• The Pearl – A bit further out of downtown but this luxury four bedroom/ 3 1/2 bath home with heated pool and private dock make it a great place for a girlfriend getaway.

If you’d prefer a hotel instead I can’t say enough good things about Hotel Indigo Panama City Marina. The hotel is located in Panama City and is a short drive to Historic St. Andrews. Recently opened, it’s the only waterfront hotel in Panama City.

It’s the only waterfront hotel in Panama City and recently opened in June 2023. 

There is a rooftop bar/restaurant that is absolutely worth visiting to enjoy a pre/post dinner cocktail. Incredible bay views with  plentiful outdoor seating. The hotel also offers dining in the bar/lobby area which is another good choices.

However, if you’d like leave the hotel but don’t want to go far, take a short stroll  across the parking lot to Harrison’s Restaurant, complete with waterfront dining options.

I enjoyed a corner room at the hotel and the views were spectacular. The room was incredibly comfortable with plush bedding and amenities.

HOW FAR IS DAYTONA BEACH FROM DISNEY WORLD AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS?

It’s not quite 90 minutes from the parks to the beach. An easy addition to your Orlando vacation.

WHERE IS DAYTONA BEACH LOCATED?

Located along the coast in central Florida, it is a short drive south of St. Augustine, a not bad drive from Miami and a really long drive north from the Florida Keys or Key West. 

WHO SHOULD VISIT DAYTONA BEACH?

Everyone from the entire family to girlfriend getaways to romantic escapes. There is something here for everyone.

WHEN SHOULD I VISIT DAYTONA BEACH? 

That really depends on what you’d like to do. There really isn’t a bad month to visit, but there are some events you’ll want to be aware of so you can either join or avoid.

Busy time: Spring Break, Summers (Mid-May through Mid-September),Bike Week, Biketoberfest, and the Daytona 500 NASCAR event

Slower time: December – February, but expect cooler temps and it’s probably not “swim in the ocean” weather, but still quite enjoyable.

HOW TO GET TO THE BEACH AT DAYTONA BEACH? 

Follow your map over to Highway A1A and simply head north or south watching for parks, beach parking or beach entrances along the way. A1A hugs the coastline and there is plenty of places to access the beach once there.

IS THERE FREE PARKING AT DAYTONA BEACH?

Yes!!! There are a number of parks and parking areas along the beach. The parks have free parking and restrooms, picnic areas and beach access. It is awesome.

HOW TO GET TO DAYTONA BEACH?

If you live close enough I would make the drive so that you have a car at your disposable without added expense. However, the Daytona Beach International Airport has a number of flights every day and car rental options so flying in is a really great option.

Plus, the airport is a short drive to the beach.

WHICH AIRPORT IS CLOSET TO DAYTONA BEACH? 

Daytona Beach International Airport puts you right at the heart of everything there is to do. However, you might find a cheaper rate in/out of Orlando airport which is about 70 miles from Daytona Beach. Easy drive and could be worth it.

DO I NEED A CAR IN DAYTONA BEACH? 

Yes, the Daytona Beach beach is 23-miles long with memorable attractions, accommodations, and restaurants along that stretch. Having a car will make it so much easier.

IS DAYTONA BEACH SAFE? 

I get this question about every place I visit and my reply is always the same. Every town (yes, even your own) has good parts and, let’s say, not so good parts, the same holds true everywhere. 

And, just like at home always take these precautions:

• Be aware of your surroundings <<–most important. Head up, be aware of what’s happening in your immediate circle and don’t go where things don’t look safe. Use common sense and stay safe.
• Don’t swim/hike/kayak alone, always have a buddy or someone that you check in with upon return that will know what to do if you don’t check in.

MUSEUM OF ART AND SCIENCE

The Smithsonian-affiliated Museum of Arts & Sciences includes a planetarium, restored train cars, and an incredible permanent collections that included decorative arts, Cuban art, African art and the only hands-on science center between Jacksonville and Orlando. 

CICI AND HYATT BROWN MUSEUM OF ART

This is what happens when your personal collection of art gets to be too big. You build your own art museum to store and showcase it all and then open to the public.

I definitely appreciate that their art collections has been made available for all to enjoy. 

The works of art all gorgeously displayed in this magnificent museum.

JACKIE ROBINSON BALLPARK AND STATUE 

Baseball fans won’t want to miss the iconic park where Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated Major League Baseball spring training game way back in 1946. 

In front of the ballpark is a statue of the man himself as well as historical markers and a museum.

If you are in town while the Daytona Tortugas, a Cincinnati Red affiliated minor league team, is playing you might was to catch a game.

SHOP BEACH STREET 

Be sure to spend an hour or two browsing the fun shops along Beach Street.

Angell & Phelps Chocolate & Factory Tour 

This is a self guided tour, once you are in the store walk to the very back and read the placards on the wall while watching the employee craft delicious chocolate through the windows.

Once you finish the tour, be sure to enjoy a sample of chocolate before browsing the store and buying some tasty souvenirs to take home.

I also LOVE that Angell & Phelps were from Michigan and learned to make fudge from the iconic fudge sellers of Mackinaw Island, MI

Sweet Marley’s Coffee Shop

Coffee and tea lovers will want to stop at this adorable coffee shop for a cup to go. 

Abraxas Used Bookstore

PILES of books everywhere. This is a book lovers dream. It’s a small area, but you just know there are treasures in here to be found. 

Galerie Elan 

This recently opened art gallery features a number of local artist and is set to open the Cafe Vincent Coffee & Wine Bar and offer live music.

It’s a pretty great addition to Beach Street.

Daytona Magic Shop

How often do you see a magic shop when you travel. I think this is the first one I’ve ever come across and what a delight.

Cinematique Theater

Not just any movie theater, but an art house movie theater with couch and table seating as well as food and drinks. 

LILIAN PLACE HERITAGE CENTER  

Lilian Place, one of the oldest homes on the beachside in Daytona Beach, is a Italianate High Victorian and is open for guided tours Wednesday through Mondays. 

Additionally, they offer Victorian Tea twice a month and Winedown Wednesdays once a month. 

The best part of the house, in my opinion, is it is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lucille.

Lucille has been causing mischief for over 100 years.  Strange incidents have been rumored through the years including a woman dressed in white, laughing children, and a man resembling Stephen Crane, the famed author of the Open Boat. 

Crane was aboard his boat “Commodore” when it sank off the shoreline of Daytona Beach on December 31, 1896.  Crane made it to shore and was taken to Lilian Place to recuperate. 

Check their site to see if they are offering any ghost hunts while you are in town. 

ONE DAYTONA For Shopping and Dining

ONE DAYTONA is an entertainment center located directly across from the iconic Daytona International Speedway. 

There is a mix of dining, shopping, entertainment and lodging. 

A couple must-see/do while here:

• Grab lunch at 4 Rivers BBQ
• Take photos of the iconic Jantzen diving girl located in front of The Daytona hotel.
• Visit the hotel lobby/bar area of The Daytona for racing cars and memorabilia
• Check out Donnie’s Donuts

FUN THINGS TO DO IN ORMOND BEACH 

A few miles north of Daytona Beach you’ll find Ormond Beach. Another great little town by the sea.

Dunn’s Attic

One of the best places, maybe the only place, to sip and shop in the Daytona Beach Area. Grab a $1 mimosa or $2 sangria before shopping the 12,000+ square foot showroom at Dunn’s Attic.

There is furniture, jewelry, gifts, collectibles, art, books and so much more. 

It would be so easy to spend an afternoon browsing and Dunn’s Attic is set to open a second location nearby for even more shopping opportunities.

Tomoka State Park

The Tomoka State Park, located a few miles north of Ormond Beach, offers camping, water sports, a camp store and, most importantly, a 45-foot art deco statue to honor Chief Tomokie who lived on this land.

Chief Tomokie definitely lands in the roadside attraction list. It’s pretty impressive to see in person.
