After all, as far as entertainment options go, gaming is one of the biggest. It should, therefore, come as no surprise to see homeowners everywhere deciding to go with a gaming-inspired garden design. From console favorites like Elden Ring and iconic franchises like the Zelda series to online blackjack games like Touchdown Blackjack and battle royale masterpieces like Fortnite, almost everyone is gaming these days, and there are some special titles to bring into the home. 

Of course, not all gamers necessarily want to gamify their gardens, but some do. So, if you’re considering doing the same to your backyard, below are some ways to create a gaming-themed garden.

Focus on layout 

First and foremost, you need to assess the layout of your garden to see what could work and what might not. For instance, if you’re keen to add a classic maze as you see in Pac-Man, then it might not work if you don’t have the required space. Likewise, if you want a donkey theme, given your love of Donkey Kong, then you’ll need to ensure you have enough trees. Additionally, do you have the right layout to add colored paving stones that represent game paths? These playful elements can really make or break your design, making it important to focus on the layout of your outside space before embarking on your build. 

Consider adding statues of familiar characters

A sure-fire way to bring a gaming theme to your garden is by adding some familiar characters to it. You’ll need to check whether the product you’re interested in is suitable for the outdoors, but if it is, then throwing in some iconic gaming faces into your bushes and on your patio can really go a long way. From a Fallout Dark Horse PVC Ghoul Statue to classic Spider-Man creations, you’ll be filled with potential acquisitions to make here should you decide to adopt this particular approach.

Create a wildlife-friendly space 

Some of the most iconic games out there also feature large populations of loveable creatures, including animals. If you want to bring some wildlife into your home, then consider making it inviting for local wildlife to frequent. Bird feeds work, butterfly gardens are lovely, and you even go with a bee hotel.

Add interactive features 

To make your gaming-themed garden even more spectacular, you should consider adding some interactive game elements that mirror the real-life offering in the virtual world. You can turn ordinary garden features into playful additions. For instance, some people consider snapping up stepping stones that are based around a particular title. Likewise, you can add a life-sized chessboard or an outdoor bowling alley, while some people even add a mini racing track or a wizard’s chessboard from iconic productions like Harry Potter. There are so many avenues you can go down here. 

Don’t forget to update it 

In the same way that game updates can transform a title, gardens with a strong gaming theme should also be refreshed from time to time. Don’t be afraid to go with a new gaming theme at certain times of the year, while you could also add the same seasonal events many products have to your garden’s design. For instance, in the summer, you could add a sprinkling of anime art from Genshin Impact, while for Halloween, you might prefer a darker theme from Resident Evil.

A Small Town Meets a Legendary Band

Picture it: small-town Michigan in the early ‘70s. Autumn weekends mean crisp air, changing leaves, and a packed stadium for Viking football. The community rallies behind its team, which just wrapped up a flawless season. Hopes are sky-high until the following year begins with back-to-back losses. Spirits sink, and coaches Dave Brines and Jim Neff know they need something different to fire up their players.

That’s when Jim Neff, the assistant coach with a passion for rock and roll, turns to music. Not just any music, though something bold enough to shake things up. His pick? A rising band called KISS. Their thunderous sound, explosive energy, and in your face style were unlike anything Cadillac had seen before. And as fate would have it, their name lined up perfectly with an old football saying: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

The effect was immediate. The locker room buzzed with adrenaline, the team roared back with new confidence, and Cadillac unknowingly carved its name into KISS history. What started as a coaching experiment soon turned into a legendary connection between a small Michigan town and one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

When KISS finally rolled into Cadillac in 1975, the town went wild. Fans lined the streets to see the band in full makeup, and the players got a once in a lifetime pep boost when the group joined them on the field. Autographs were signed, photos were snapped, and Cadillac suddenly found itself on the national radar, all thanks to a bold rock band and a small-town team looking for a spark.

Now, fifty years later, Cadillac is ready to celebrate that legendary connection. For four days this October, our little town in Northern Michigan will be filled with KISS spirit, music, stories, and plenty of rock and roll nostalgia. In between the events, you can soak in the fall colors, stroll downtown, or explore the lakes and trails that make Cadillac such a perfect autumn getaway.

This October, we’re bringing that legendary energy back to life! From downtown displays and museum exhibits to live music, tailgates, and even a KISS-themed drone show, the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion lets fans experience the spirit of 1975 all over again. Whether you’re reliving the memories or discovering Cadillac’s rock history for the first time, every moment of the weekend is packed with music, fun, and nostalgia.

All weekend long, take time to wander through the museum and check out the Kisstory Tour stops around town. Each stop has its own unique KISS-themed treat, from a bag of KISS coffee at Owl Eye Coffee Shop to KISS-inspired chocolate at The Sweet Shop. It’s the perfect way to sip, shop, and celebrate a piece of rock history.

I was born and raised in Cadillac and while growing up here there was not much to do. You basically had like three options, go to the movies, bowling, or do an outdoor activity like swimming, hiking, taking out a four wheeler on the trails, fishing, skiing or snowboarding. You get the gist of it and a lot of people couldn’t afford the fancy outdoor toys including my family.

I spent a lot of time outdoors, hanging out with the neighbors and riding my bike. Thinking back on it, I now realize how few activities Cadillac had compared to the places I’ve lived since. It kind of makes me sad.

After a number of years away, I moved back last year and I’m rediscovering my hometown through fresh eyes and finding that there are so many things to do now compared to a decade ago.

Summer Fun For Locals and Visitors Alike

Camping

Cadillac offers great places to camp with a tent or camper, there are even cabin rentals on the lake!

Right between the lakes you have Mitchell State Park that offers many sites as well as some cabins. The benefit of staying at this one is you’re right between two lakes and across the street from Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center. The center offers hiking trails and numerous events throughout the year. This summer you can take a fly fishing seminar in July. Be sure to check out the other numerous activities available this summer. Another benefit of staying at the state park is the accessibility to nearby restaurants, and most importantly, coffee. Also, downtown Cadillac is just on the other side of Lake Cadillac about 10 minutes drive away.

Another campground to check out on the lake is Hemlock Campground. I haven’t stayed at Hemlock, but I’m definitely curious to try it. It looks perfect for campers that like a bit more privacy.

Shopping and Eating

Cadillac’s charming downtown is a delightful mix of retail shops, restaurants, and coffee spots. Some of our favorites include:

• Serendipity and The Bird House: Great for unique finds.
• Chunky Bear Coffee: A cozy spot to sip a cup of coffee.
• Wildflour Bakery: A perfect place to send a letter to your future self.

For when you’re feeling hungry, you can stop by Indian Spice, Clam Lake Beer Co., or Mi Mezcal Mexican for a delicious meal.

Gardening Stops You Should Visit This Summer

If you’re into gardening, Cadillac and the surrounding area are home to some great greenhouses and garden centers:

This cozy bakery is the perfect place for anyone with a sweet tooth, a love for tea (boba or hot), and a desire to perhaps write a letter to their future self (more on that soon).

The quirky and fun decor greets you before you ever step foot inside with the rolling pin door handle. The unique use of tea cups and baking items continues throughout the bakery lending a very fun aesthetic to your visit.

Once you step inside you’ll find a welcoming and warm atmosphere. Part of the fun during your visit is finding all the ways they use everyday baking and kitchen items as decor throughout the bakery. Also a great game of “I Spy” to play with kids.

There are little Easter eggs everywhere you look from their tea cup clock to their rolling pin wall and so much more. You may also immediately notice a calendar wall at the front of the bakery which is where you’ll drop the note to future you in the date of your choice. There is plenty of relaxing spots to sit and hangout with friends or to use as your work office for an hour or two.

At Wildflour Bakery, you’ll find canolis to scones to cookies and a variety of other choices. Every item is baked in house and there is a lunch menu available on most days. Themed afternoon teas are in the works.

Speaking of tea, that is what truly sets this bakery apart. They offer up a diverse tea menu with a wide selection of boba and hot teas. Whether you’re a tea connoisseur or just looking for something new to try, Wildflour Bakery has something to tempt your tastebuds.

Of course, the highlight really is their boba tea. If you’re not familiar, boba (aka bubble) tea consists of tea accompanied by chewy tapioca balls (“boba” or “pearls”), but it can be made with other toppings as well, such as popping boba. Boba tea has many varieties and flavors, but the two most popular varieties are pearl black milk tea and pearl green milk tea (“pearl” for the tapioca balls at the bottom).

Boba tea is a fun and refreshing treat that’s perfect for any time of day. Choose from a variety of flavors and then customize your drink with chewy tapioca pearls or fruity popping boba. Take A Color Driving Tour

Color driving tours are kinda the gold standard when it comes to fall fun and that is no exception in the Cadillac area.

The region has two fall color routes that you don’t want to miss. Each route is a perfect day trip that allows you to explore Cadillac and the greater area to find some of our best hidden gems.

The in-town Cadillac route is an 18-mile loop that takes you around both Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. Did you know we had two lakes in the heart of downtown Cadillac?

Before you begin your fall color drive grab a cup of coffee at one of the many local coffee shops and then start your tour at Cadillac Commons. Drive along the lakes and part of the Manistee National Forest before arriving in “Cadillac West.” There you can visit Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and take a jaunt on the Heritage Nature Trail. The route will loop you back into downtown Cadillac in time for lunch and shopping.

The Around Cadillac color tour loops total about 200 miles. There is both an east and west segment that will wind you to scenic overlooks, beautiful hiking trails, fall canopies, farm markets and boutiques.

The western side of the loop will have you stopping at seven overlooks and take you past a few farms and hiking trails while the eastern loop is focused on the agricultural aspects of the region.

Where To Have Family Fun Down On The Farm

Dick Family Farm in McBain is a centennial dairy farm open on Fridays and Saturdays in October that offers lots of family fun in the fall. Pick out the perfect pumpkin from over 20 varieties, explore the Pure Michigan corn maze, climb the hay bale mountain, play in the corn bin, and pet the animals. Homemade donuts and cider are also available!

Brinks Family Creamery located in McBain is a 4th generation farm, creating premium milk and cheese products directly from the Grade A milk of top quality, registered Holsteins. They also have play areas for kids and animals to pet along with a fully stocked bakery. If that is too far of a trip for you, keep your eyes peeled as they have just opened a frozen yogurt shop in downtown Cadillac, Benny’s Froyo and Mo!

This next stop truly has something for everyone. Maple Leaf Farm and Creamery in Falmouth is an artisan goat milk creamery & farm, take an afternoon to discover their on-site classes and demonstrations, to educational activities and camps, festivals and gift shops, hayrides, wagon rides and more! No shortage of fun on this fully operational farm. This is one of our favorite farms to visit. Throughout the year you’re always welcome to visit the goats, pssss, spring is great for that!

Norman’s Farm in Tustin is a small family owned farm in operation since 1889! You will find a variety of pumpkins, squash, gourds, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes on site. This farm yields not only quality produce and livestock, but also seven generations of agricultural knowledge and ability.

The Hudson Farm in Cadillac features seasonal events and a gift shop cleverly named “Ewe-niquely U”, with plenty of fun activities to explore. Their Fall Festival entertainment includes: feeding & petting farm animals, wagon rides, hay maze, free crafts, pumpkins, hot & cold refreshments and much more!

The mission at 3rd Day Farm in Lake City is clear -“learn, love, & give…REAL food!”. You can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

The Poplar Pines farm in Mesick produces a variety of farm fresh organic duck eggs, chicken eggs, and home baked breads, available on a first come, first serve basis at their seasonal farm stand. Other fall activities on site include a petting zoo, sandbox, playground, and hayrides with cider and donuts!

Hikers on the Hunt for Fall Colors

While Cadillac offers some remarkable driving tours that show off the best color, some prefer to view the scene on foot.

Our favorite hike is at the High Rollway on the Manistee River. Incredible views with an easy walk, pack a picnic and stay awhile. The color views are amazing from here. This article shares more about the high rollaway plus four additional hiking trails to check out!

ORV Fall Trail Fun

Cadillac and the surrounding region has 120 miles of off-road vehicle trails along 10 ORV trail systems, which makes it a great way to get deep in the woods and see fall colors missed by many.

Cadillac also has new wayfinding signs making your adventure in the woods easier to navigate. There are also a number of outfitters in the area to rent an ORV from so you don’t have to own one to get out on the trails.

We went with Bigfoot Epic Adventures, because of course we did, but the Cadillac CVB has a list of rentals listed so you can find the one that works best for your up north adventure.

Fall River Floats 

Soak up all that the fall season has left to offer by taking to one of the Cadillac Area’s two magnificent rivers. The Big Manistee River, a wide, smooth flowing river with many great places to get out and enjoy picnics, camping, and fishing; or give the Pine River a try, more narrow, swift and a true challenge. Fall color views from the water are second to none! Click here to learn more.

Can’t make a float this fall? No worries, come on up this winter and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with a winter rafting trip on the Pine or nearby East Jordan. It’s our favorite winter activity.

Fall Fishing in Northern Michigan

The section of the Big Manistee River below Tippy Dam is designated a National Scenic River. The changing colors of the leaves and wildlife visible along the river banks as autumn moves into early winter make for a beautiful float. In the fall, the Steelhead are feeding heavily for the onset of winter; you will also find Coho Salmon and Brown Trout. Read more about it here.

While you’re in that area be sure to check out the Little Mac Footbridge on the Manistee River Trail near Hodenpyl Dam.

KISS Fans

One of the most unexpected discoveries in Cadillac is the KISS memorial at Cadillac High School. You can read about the why it exists here, but it’s definitely worth a stop for 70s Rock n Roll fans and all those who appreciate some seriously good hard rock music.

Although, fair warning, the island is busy during the summer months. If you can visit this unique place in the fall during the week it will be a bit quieter.

Grab a ferry in either St. Ignace (in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) or in Mackinaw City (in Michigan’s lower peninsula).  Both offers multiple ferries a day to and from the island.

You’ll want to plan, at a minimum, an entire day trip to the island, but if it’s possible plan at least a 2-day, 1-night visit. I recently stayed for 3-nights and wanted to stay longer.

You’ll pass the Somewhere In Time Gazebo, follow the path into the woods to the right.

It’s a cult classic and fans flock to the island every year to visit the movie locations and attend the Somewhere In Time Festival held at the Grand Hotel.

Located near the Fort Mackinac administrative offices is the gazebo from the movie. A great place to sit a spell.

Visit Fort Holmes

Fort Holmes is part of the Fort Mackinac Historic State Parks and is located on the highest point on the island. It has recently been restored and provides an excellent view of the island.

Find Sunset Rock

There is a trail behind the Inn at Stonecliffe that winds its way through the woods and eventually leads you to Sunset Rock.

Wawashkamo Golf Course for a History Lesson

Wawashkamo is an interesting blend of history and today.

It is Michigans oldest, unchanged, private nine-hole golf course. It was founded in 1898 and that way you see it today is mostly how it was over a century ago.

This is also the land of the great 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island. This was once a farmer’s field where American soldiers attempted and failed to drive the British from their hill.

When you tee off at the first hole you are teeing off on historic ground.

Paddle the Straits

Great Turtle Kayak Tours offers two locations and many tour options for getting out on the water to explore the Straits of Mackinac.

The first option is to take a tour from the mainland before heading to the island. Go the Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City and enjoy a paddle to the Fort and under the mighty Mackinac Bridge. That is definitely a bucket list item.

Once you are on the island join Great Turtle Kayak Tours for a paddle to famous Mackinac Island landmarks. SUP is also available.

Take a Stroll Around Sugar Loaf Rock

This 75-foot tall rock stands strong in the middle of the island. View it from afar to appreciate its beauty and then take a walk around it to appreciate its immense size.

There are approximately 13 fudge shops on Mackinac Island and they all offer free samples of fudge.

Watch the fudge makers twists and flip hot fudge on a marble slab while nibbling on their delightful creations.

This is great to do right before leaving the island so you can find your favorite flavors and take home a couple of tastes of the island for family and friends.

Fudge is the best selling souvenir on the island.  (Start and end at Ryba’s….just sayin’)

The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, a part of the Mackinac State Historic Parks is located on Main St. at the east edge of Marquette Park and offers art that is centered around Mackinac Island.

The Little Stone Church was built of local fieldstones in 1904.

There are stained glass windows in the front of the church that depict the history of Mackinac Island. Stop and read the historical marker for more history when you visit.

A small deck on the back of the library invites you to sit and enjoy a book while watching freighters and ferries pass by.

See Skull Cave

A small squat-ish style cave that was once believed to be the burial ground for Native Americans and was a hiding spot for a fleeing fur trader.

Today the cave is free of bones and visitors are asked to view the cave from behind the fence and not try to climb inside.

Every Thursday at 6:30 PM from June 27- August 22 in Marquette Park you can enjoy music in the great outdoors. No worries if it rains, the concert moves indoors to the Center for the Arts at Mission Point.

Serves: 4 (makes 8 muffins)

Banana-Chocolate Chunk Muffins Ingredients:

2 large ripe bananas, mashed
¾ c. natural almond butter
¼ c. real maple syrup
1 large egg
1 t. vanilla extract
1 T. coconut flour
¼ t. baking soda
¼ t. salt
1 3-oz. bar unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped into small chunks

Banana-Chocolate Chunk Muffins Directions

1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F and line a 12-muffin cup tin with 8 paper liners.
   
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bananas, almond butter, maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract. Whisk briskly into a fairly smooth batter.
   
3. Add the coconut flour, baking soda, and salt and stir to combine. Fold in the chocolate chunks until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
   
4. Divide the batter between the 8 muffin cups and place in the pre-heated oven to bake until cooked through and puffy, approximately 18-20 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.
   
5. Remove from oven and allow muffins to cool for 10-15 minutes before removing from the muffin tin to serve. Enjoy!
