Take A Color Driving Tour

Color driving tours are kinda the gold standard when it comes to fall fun and that is no exception in the Cadillac area.

The region has two fall color routes that you don’t want to miss. Each route is a perfect day trip that allows you to explore Cadillac and the greater area to find some of our best hidden gems.

The in-town Cadillac route is an 18-mile loop that takes you around both Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. Did you know we had two lakes in the heart of downtown Cadillac?

Before you begin your fall color drive grab a cup of coffee at one of the many local coffee shops and then start your tour at Cadillac Commons. Drive along the lakes and part of the Manistee National Forest before arriving in “Cadillac West.” There you can visit Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and take a jaunt on the Heritage Nature Trail. The route will loop you back into downtown Cadillac in time for lunch and shopping.

The Around Cadillac color tour loops total about 200 miles. There is both an east and west segment that will wind you to scenic overlooks, beautiful hiking trails, fall canopies, farm markets and boutiques.

The western side of the loop will have you stopping at seven overlooks and take you past a few farms and hiking trails while the eastern loop is focused on the agricultural aspects of the region.

Where To Have Family Fun Down On The Farm

Dick Family Farm in McBain is a centennial dairy farm open on Fridays and Saturdays in October that offers lots of family fun in the fall. Pick out the perfect pumpkin from over 20 varieties, explore the Pure Michigan corn maze, climb the hay bale mountain, play in the corn bin, and pet the animals. Homemade donuts and cider are also available!

Brinks Family Creamery located in McBain is a 4th generation farm, creating premium milk and cheese products directly from the Grade A milk of top quality, registered Holsteins. They also have play areas for kids and animals to pet along with a fully stocked bakery. If that is too far of a trip for you, keep your eyes peeled as they have just opened a frozen yogurt shop in downtown Cadillac, Benny’s Froyo and Mo!

This next stop truly has something for everyone. Maple Leaf Farm and Creamery in Falmouth is an artisan goat milk creamery & farm, take an afternoon to discover their on-site classes and demonstrations, to educational activities and camps, festivals and gift shops, hayrides, wagon rides and more! No shortage of fun on this fully operational farm. This is one of our favorite farms to visit. Throughout the year you’re always welcome to visit the goats, pssss, spring is great for that!

Norman’s Farm in Tustin is a small family owned farm in operation since 1889! You will find a variety of pumpkins, squash, gourds, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes on site. This farm yields not only quality produce and livestock, but also seven generations of agricultural knowledge and ability.

The Hudson Farm in Cadillac features seasonal events and a gift shop cleverly named “Ewe-niquely U”, with plenty of fun activities to explore. Their Fall Festival entertainment includes: feeding & petting farm animals, wagon rides, hay maze, free crafts, pumpkins, hot & cold refreshments and much more!

The mission at 3rd Day Farm in Lake City is clear -“learn, love, & give…REAL food!”. You can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

The Poplar Pines farm in Mesick produces a variety of farm fresh organic duck eggs, chicken eggs, and home baked breads, available on a first come, first serve basis at their seasonal farm stand. Other fall activities on site include a petting zoo, sandbox, playground, and hayrides with cider and donuts!

Hikers on the Hunt for Fall Colors

While Cadillac offers some remarkable driving tours that show off the best color, some prefer to view the scene on foot.

Our favorite hike is at the High Rollway on the Manistee River. Incredible views with an easy walk, pack a picnic and stay awhile. The color views are amazing from here. This article shares more about the high rollaway plus four additional hiking trails to check out!

ORV Fall Trail Fun

Cadillac and the surrounding region has 120 miles of off-road vehicle trails along 10 ORV trail systems, which makes it a great way to get deep in the woods and see fall colors missed by many.

Cadillac also has new wayfinding signs making your adventure in the woods easier to navigate. There are also a number of outfitters in the area to rent an ORV from so you don’t have to own one to get out on the trails.

We went with Bigfoot Epic Adventures, because of course we did, but the Cadillac CVB has a list of rentals listed so you can find the one that works best for your up north adventure.

Fall River Floats 

Soak up all that the fall season has left to offer by taking to one of the Cadillac Area’s two magnificent rivers. The Big Manistee River, a wide, smooth flowing river with many great places to get out and enjoy picnics, camping, and fishing; or give the Pine River a try, more narrow, swift and a true challenge. Can’t make a float this fall? No worries, come on up this winter and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with a winter rafting trip on the Pine or nearby East Jordan. It’s our favorite winter activity.

Fall Fishing in Northern Michigan

The section of the Big Manistee River below Tippy Dam is designated a National Scenic River. The changing colors of the leaves and wildlife visible along the river banks as autumn moves into early winter make for a beautiful float. In the fall, the Steelhead are feeding heavily for the onset of winter; you will also find Coho Salmon and Brown Trout. Read more about it here.

One of the most unexpected discoveries in Cadillac is the KISS memorial at Cadillac High School. You can read about the why it exists here, but it’s definitely worth a stop for 70s Rock n Roll fans and all those who appreciate some seriously good hard rock music.

Honestly, most of it defies description, but if you love Appalachian Art OR you’re a fan of Cabbage Patch dolls this is the place for you.

A Very Brief Cabbage Patch History

BabyLand is free to visit and when you enter the “waiting room” be sure to take your time exploring the displays of Cabbage Patch dolls that showcase the history.

Afterwards, walk through the nursery to see the hand-stitched works of art up close, feel free to pick them up and hold them and appreciate the craftsmanship involved.

Did you know Cabbage Patch dolls were started as an art form?

In the beginning each doll was hand stitched by Xavier Roberts using “needle molding” a German technique for fabric sculpture from the early 1800.

The very first doll, Dexter, won a first-place ribbon for sculpture at the Osceola Art Show in 1978.

Xavier then began delivering his hand made Little People Originals and exhibiting them at arts and crafts shows in the southeast with an “adoption fee” of $40.

By the early 1980’s the popularity of Cabbage Patch dolls had exploded and the demand far outpaced supply.

Eventually, the boom simmered down, but the dolls popularity remained.

Forty years later and the Cabbage Patch brand is still strong.

Enjoy farm bounty eight months of the year in Georgia’s mild climate. U-picks and family activities abound.

From April through early November Washington Farms offers everything from a spring strawberry U-pick to a fall pumpkin patch and flower fields, wrapped in a daylong entertainment experience of more than 25 activities for kids and adults, from a vortex tunnel and human foosball to pig races, jumping pads and a zip line.

In June and July, head over to Hadden Estates at DGD Farms for U-pick or pre-picked blueberries on a family-run farm that’s also a captivating wedding venue.

From mid-June to mid-August, choose from eight varieties of irrigated blueberries and two varieties of irrigated blackberries at Miller Blueberry Farm, a certified bee friendly U-pick farm.

At Twin Run Flower Farm, pick from rows and rows of blooms. Early spring brings daffodils; a variety of blooms are growing summer through fall.

For provisions to take back home or to your room, choose from locally grown meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and more at the Oconee Farmers Market, 9 a.m.-noon, every Saturday from May to November, in front of the Oconee County Courthouse.

Oconee Chamber Fall Festival, October

Held the third Saturday in October, (October 21, 2023) all items are handmade at this premier arts and crafts showcase featuring 200 vendors from all over the United States. A wide variety of food vendors and fun activities make this a must-attend event. 

Georgia Bushcraft Gathering, November

Learn ways to survive in the woods at a family friendly event. This is a weekend-long experience where you can learn from 50+ different Bushcraft pros and workshops, shop various vendors and artists, listen to live music and eat great food.

Watkinsville Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting, First weekend of December

I’ve visited Wytheville a couple times now and I keep wanting to go back! There is so much to explore, and the mountain views are incredibly gorgeous.

I’ve put together a list of ten things to do when you visit whether its for a day, a weekend, or a week. After you get a taste of this unique mountain town you’ll want to visit again and again.

17 Absolute MUST Things You Have To Do In Wytheville in Southwest Virginia + Where to Stay

1. Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum

As one of only eight historic sites across the country dedicated to the interpretation of a First Lady, the museum tells the story of Wytheville native Edith Bolling Wilson.

She was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson, and played a pivotal role in the White House at an important moment during World War I.

What you might miss reading on museum placards and why it’s so important to have a docent give the tour is that Edith Bolling Wilson was a badass! 

Widowed fairly young, she took over her husband’s jewelry business and ran it very successfully.

Then, one day, after having tea with the President (arranged through mutual friends), the widowed Ms. Bolling started dating President Wilson. I’m assuming she took some heat for that (cause y’all know people put her on blast even back then).

She was the first female in the DC area to own and operate an electric car and, my favorite fact about her, she drank bourbon daily.

Oh, and she refused the President’s first marriage proposal. I do love stories of independent women. And in some utter cuteness, #relationshipgoals news, while the President was courting her he wrote her daily love letters and sent frequently sent her orchids, her favorite flower. #RelationshipGoals

There’s also some that claim her as America’s first acting female President. It’s believed that she took over many of the behind the scenes tasks to make sure her ailing husband remained stress-free. 

I mean, she’s kind of my new hero and I learned so much about her. A must-visit when you are in Wytheville and is worth an hour of your time.

A couple books to read if you’re interested in learning more about her: My Memoir by Edith Boling Wilson (you’ll probably need to find this gem at a local library or, if you’re lucky, a used bookstore) and President in Love: The Courtship Letters of Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Wilson

2. Crossroads Social House

Wytheville’s newest attraction, Crossroads Social House is a family entertainment center with 14 lanes for bowling, a laser tag arena, multiple party rooms, an arcade, a billiards and darts area and a trampoline jump zone.

This is a great place to kick back, have some great food and bowl and play billiards and darts. There’s also a really nice arcade room to let the kid in you have some fun. 

If you’re in town during a big game, they have two areas complete with large tv’s and comfy seating for small groups you can reserve.

Open 7 days a week, Crossroads also features a full-service restaurant and bar with a seasonal outdoor patio area.

3. Thomas J. Boyd Museum 

Honoring Thomas Jefferson Boyd, the “Father of Wytheville,” the Boyd Museum focuses on local history, including local craftsmen, abundant natural resources and the area’s1950 polio epidemic, called the “Summer Without Children.”

There are a couple really interesting, in my opinion, exhibits you’ll want to stop in and see. The first is the above mentioned “Summer Without Children.” It tells the story of the polio epidemic, and the lengths locals went to to ensure the safety of the community.

A story shared with me and one that just intrigues me so much is that of a mom who filled a room in her house, known today as Rock Hall, with sand so the kids could play without being outside It’s said that the family didn’t leave the house for a very extended period and all survived the pandemic.

I have so many questions–where does one find enough sand to fill a room, was she sweeping up sand every day, all day long, did the sand have to be replenished/replaced, how much sand does it actually take to fill a room. I could go on and on. That being said, I love the ingenuity of a mom finding a way to stay sane during a crazy time.

Another exhibit that’s really cool is the indoor beehive. As an avid gardener and wannabe beekeeper, I thought this was fascinating.

And maybe my favorite badass female story from the museum is that of Molly Tynes who we’ve never heard of because, if I had to guess, she’s female. But she’s basically the female version of  Paul Revere.

She rode forty-four miles, on horseback, at night, over four mountains, telling everyone along the way “The Yankees are coming in the morning,” and basically saved the town, railroad, and mines.

Wytheville is full of badass women stories…I love it here!

4. Historic Millwald Theatre 

This 1928 theatre had fallen into some serious disrepair and hadn’t operated as a full-time theater for many years. All that changed when they reopened the fully renovated theater in 2022

The theatre is bringing arts and culture events to the 515-seat auditorium with both live and filmed events. 

From comedians to concerts to classic films and so much more. Definitely try to grab a show while you’re in town.

5. Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre 

In a town of less than 10,000 you don’t often find a dinner theater, but Wytheville likes keeping things unique and the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre does not disappoint.

All the theatre productions are musicals and I’m here for it. The minute I catch wind they are doing a production of Mama Mia I’m buying the tickets and making the drive.

Our four-course meal was served and enjoyed while we relaxed in the comfort of the theatre. Plates were cleared right before the production began.

I’ve been able to see “The Sound of Music” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and loved both.

6. West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard

After a fun packed day take some time to unwind at West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard.

With award-winning wines, this beautiful fourth-generation family homestead is welcoming and encourages guests to stay away and enjoy a glass or two of wine and the ambiance. 

Absolutely try the Galena Creek Peach wine. It’s the perfect refreshing drink on a hot summer day.

There were also a number of red wines I enjoyed and if I hadn’t flown, I would have taken a number of bottles home with me.

Instead, I just brought home the Galena Creek Peach for a girlfriend’s brunch event.

7. 1870 Octagon Mansion History Museum/Gallery

This right here was another surprising find for me. The construction for this unique building started way back in 1866 by a doctor and was then sold to a minister before completion in 1874.

Side wings were then added to the house in the 1890s by the next owner and is how you’ll see the layout of the house today.

On display is a private life-time collection of John Cushman who started collecting when he was just 5 years old.

The displays are mostly Civil War memorabilia, but there are a few other world conflicts represented.

The different rooms in the mansion each house a specific collection with the most interesting the uniform room. 

While the historical items in the home are interesting and worth the stop it’s the hauntings of the building that seriously caught my attention.

It’s believed that numerous spirits call this mansion home, and you’ll find paranormal investigators in the building almost every weekend. I was able to join a group and I’ll have a story on that soon!

Additionally, the owners, John and Debbie, host “Dinner with a Ghost” events in the mansion dining room. The room is resplendent with decor and table settings complete with a royal table set just for the ghosts.

Enjoy a gourmet dinner while engaging in a paranormal investigation.

8. Big Walker Lookout 

It’s a twisty and curvy drive to the top of the mountain and Big Walker Lookout but it’s completely worth it.

The views are incredible from the parking lot, but from the top of the tower they are jaw-dropping stunning.

You used to be able to see five states from the top of the tower and still happens on occasion, but you can definitely see  Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

If it’s an absolute pristine clear day you might be able to see Kentucky and Tennessee as well.

If you visit on a weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy the musical stylings of regional musicians and browse artisans booths. You’ll find artists and musicians there every weekend from May to October.

Absolutely do not leave without getting an ice cream cone.

9. Fort Chiswell Animal Park 

What is one to do when they have a love for animals and want to share that joy with others? Well, they open a park, of course. This interactive animal park is home to animals from six continents, most of who freely roam the abundant 45-acre parcel of land. 

A safari bus slowly moves guests around the property, so they have a chance to see the animals up close and feed them if they’d like.

This is a great opportunity to see animals that you wouldn’t see in the wild in America. I’m not sure I’ll ever make it to Africa to see some of these animals so seeing them here is incredible. 

This is a great family outing. I was on the bus with two families and the young kids were simply thrilled to see, feed, and in some cases, touch these animals.

10. Beagle Ridge Herb Farm 

Love lavender? This is the place for you. Although Beagle Ridge is so much more than just lavender its definitely the star of the show. The lavender gardens are gorgeous and a life goal. 

Beyond the lavender there are a number of display gardens to walk through. Seriously, if my gardens looked half as good as these I’d be thrilled. 

If you want to learn more about growing lavender or even starting a lavender farm this is the place to learn. The farm offers Lavender Academy and teaches everything from growing to selling.

There is no gatekeeping of information, and you’ll walk away with all the knowledge you need to be successful.

Be sure to browse the selection of herbs and lavender for sale to take a piece of Wytheville home with you to plant in your garden.

11. Bike New River Trail State Park

The New River Trail State Park is a 57.7-mile rail trail and state park, extending from the trail’s northeastern terminus in Pulaski to its southern terminus in Galax.

Stop by the New River State Park campground store in Max Meadows and rent a bike to explore part or all of the New River Trail.

The trail is an easy, scenic pedal along the river.

If you brought your own bike there are a number of places to get on the trail. There is a great online trail map to help you pick part of the trail to explore.

12. Shot Tower

This is a fun piece of history to visit. Located a mile from the New River State Park campground along the trail (an easy 1 mile bike ride) or accessible by car.

“Overlooking the New River, Shot Tower was built more than 200 years ago to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. Guests may ascend the tower, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.”- https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/shot-tower

The shot tower is open every weekend and generally has a docent on site to share the history of the tower.

Try to visit when there is a docent onsite because you will learn so much about the history of the shot tower.

The construction alone is impressive, but whoever figured out how to make ammunition this way is genius.

Admission to the tower is free, however the daily parking fee applies.

13. Wytheville’s Smallest Church

This is a fun roadside attraction stop!

Located alongside I-81/77, it’s located on a service road, but is easy to visit. Most map apps will get you there easy enough.

The 12×16-foot chapel was built by volunteers in 2010.

14. Find the “LOVE” in Wytheville

Virginia is famous for their “LOVE” and Wytheville does not disappoint with three “LOVE” signs. 

The LOVE sign at Big Walker Lookout is one of my faves with its bigfoot cutout and those views!!!

15. Chautauqua Festival

Held in June complete with a Hot Air Balloon “glow”, artisan show, festival foods and so much more. w festival.

16. Vintage Baseball Games

Each summer you’ll find community members gather, some to play and some to watch, as vintage baseball is played locally and, in a few cases, in neighboring communities.

It’s interesting to see how baseball started compared to where it is today.

17. Wytheville Farmers Market

Absolutely go to the market! 

Open year round you can grab breakfast, pick up homemade breads, bakery items, jams, salsas and so much more.

Fresh vegetables and fruit vary throughout the growing season. 

TWO UNIQUE PLACES TO STAY IN WYTHEVILLE

Bolling Wilson Hotel

I loved returning to my room each night and climbing into the most comfortable hotel bed ever at this beautiful boutque hotel.

As part of the Ascend Hotel Collection, the hotel offers 30 guest rooms, an in-house Graze on Main restaurant, a rooftop lounge with incredible mountain and downtown views, and a covered front porch complete with comfortable chairs to relax and watch the world go by.

Special touches throughout the hotel pay tribute to Edith Bolling Wilson, from large photos of orchids, the flower with which President Wilson so fervently courted her, to nods to both her grandmother’s canaries she cared for as a child and her later taste for fine bourbon.

Without hesitation I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the hotel is pet friendly!!!

Inn At Foster Falls

If you prefer something a little more secluded head over to the Inn at Foster Falls.

Located within New River Trail State Park, the Inn at Foster Falls is just steps away from the 57-mile New River Trail and the New River.

The original Foster Falls Hotel opened in 1888 by the Foster Falls Mining and Manufacturing Company. While the mining company was in business it served as a post office, store, meeting hall and boarding house.

After the mining company sold the building it was opened as an industrial school for women and eventually the building served as an orphanage until the early 60’s.

Eventually the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation took ownership of the building and began renovations in 2013.

Almost a decade later the building opened as the Inn at Foster Falls.

This 10 room boutique hotel is absolutely delightful. The rooms are simply beautiful and cozy.

Long porches overlook the country side and top notch amenities make this must stay.

FELT MONSTER STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Draw your monster design out on a sheet of paper.

Step 2: Cut your felt piece in half and layer one on top of the other.

Step 3: Pin your main monster pattern to the 2 pieces of felt. Heart pattern only needs to be pinned to one piece of felt.

Step 4:  Cut circles out of felt or use buttons to sew “eyes” on the top layer of felt. Using the embroidery floss sew a straight line across the top layer to create a mouth.

Add your heart or other embellishments to the top layer before you sew the two pieces together.

Step 5: Using the embroidery floss sew your two pieces of felt together. When you are almost done stuff your monster with fiberfill then sew the rest of the way.

Step 6: If you are sewing a monster with arms and ears you just sew them in when you are sewing the two pieces together.

Step 7: Done! Enjoy your new Felt Monster Friend.

Enjoy farm bounty eight months of the year in Georgia’s mild climate. U-picks and family activities abound.

From April through early November Washington Farms offers everything from a spring strawberry U-pick to a fall pumpkin patch and flower fields, wrapped in a daylong entertainment experience of more than 25 activities for kids and adults, from a vortex tunnel and human foosball to pig races, jumping pads and a zip line. 5691 Hog Mountain Road, Bogart.

In June and July, head over to Hadden Estates at DGD Farms for U-pick or pre-picked blueberries on a family-run farm that’s also a captivating wedding venue, 1112 Cliff Dawson Road, Watkinsville.

Christmas at Wire Park, December

Outdoor live music, pictures with Santa, s’mores and hot chocolate, food trucks and games on the lawn of Wire Park. Wire Park, an attractive live-work-play development, hosts visitors and locals in its restaurants, greenspace, gathering areas and amphitheater for music, fairs, movie nights and more.

My son isn’t in school yet, but somehow he has managed to talk his father into buying a box of Mickey Mouse cards, and he convinced me to buy a box of Cat in the Hat cards.

By the way, if making cards just sounds too time consuming, there’s no shame in grabbing a box of premade cards 😉

Emma and I sat down the other day and came up with a list of 25 boredom buster ideas for teens that would help keep her entertained. Going for a walk or cleaning the house aren’t really the boredom buster ideas she likes to hear from me.

Thankfully, we have also come up with a list of fun craft ideas for teens.

35 BOREDOM BUSTER IDEAS FOR TEENS 

1. Go to a concert. Many cities have concerts in the city park or festivals with concerts. If you live in an university town there are, most likely, concerts there. In some cases, students can receive discounted tickets so be sure to look for those options.

2. Have a movie marathon of really bad, tacky scary movies. Netflix and/or Amazon Prime movies are great options. Don’t forget the popcorn!

3. Learn to cook something new each week. Teach yourself or look for classes on YouTube. If you have a local college nearby they often offer fun classes during the summer for teens.

4. Read 100 books. Em loves to read so setting a goal of 100 books gives her a challenge.

5. Learn to read a map (NOT the gps kind, the actual paper kind). Plot a path from your home to places you want to visit. Look for non-highway routes to really start to understand how a map works.

6. Visit a National Park. The parks offer free days throughout the year. If there isn’t a National Park near you look to your State Parks. If there is a nature center at your park they often offer programs for free throughout the summer. I’m not sure how long the parks will stay open so be mindful of closures and make sure to keep 6 feet of distance between yourself and others. 

7. Train for a 5k, hike, or take a walk. Basically, get outside and stretch your legs. You’ll need it after that movie-thon and reading.

8. Learn new songs on your favorite instrument. There are lots of great tutorials for free on YouTube.

9. Bake cookies or a cake. Take it a step further and host a bake sale for a non-profit in your area. Don’t forget to note your initiative and success on your college app and/or resume.

10. Go to the beach Living in northern Michigan, where we have about 2 months of beach weather, this is a must. <<—ONLY if the beach is deserted or there are very few people there.

11. Mow the grass, wash the dishes, or clean your room. I know, chores aren’t fun, but your parental unit will definitely appreciate it and it does give you something to fill the time.

12. Invite friends over and have a picnic. It’s a great reason to sit outside and soak up some sun.

13. Stargaze, learn the constellations.

14. Find a new hobby: Drawing, surfing (in the ocean, not on the computer), cooking, crafting, camping, caving, stargazing. The possibilities are endless and there are plenty of free online resources right now. A quick google or youtube search should net hundreds of ideas. 

15. Go for a bike ride.

16. Start a blog, vlog, or live streaming show.

17. Create art.

18. Play tennis but remember to maintain a distance 🙂

19. Start a business (dog walking, lawn mowing, babysitting, etc). This is a great way to earn money for other hobbies and interests. People may need help with these chores right now as we are all trying to figure out our new normal.

22. Visit a museum. Not all museums are boring. Research the museums in your area and see what exhibits are happening right now. Look for museum that showcase your interests.

25. Attend a summer festival. From small towns to big cities, festivals can be found everywhere. Be sure to go with a group of friends (with parental permission, of course) or take the family with you.
