Houmas House Plantation

Houmas House in Darrow, LA is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway. Built near the banks of the Mississippi River Houmas House offers guests exquisite rooms tucked away from the historic home and gardens. Houmas House offers 38 acres of gorgeous landscaping, ponds and a live oak alley. Enjoy a mint julep while exploring the grounds and home of Houmas House.

The beautifully landscaped grounds are apparent as soon as you arrive at the plantation. As you turn onto the drive you’ll be treated to vibrant displays of color lining the entryway.

Wandering the grounds is absolutely delightful. There are water features, landscaping, a secret garden, a parrot, sitting areas, bridges, arches, sculptures, and, oh, so much more.

We spent all our time just wandering around exploring the grounds. As someone who loves gardens this place was wonderful to visit. Grab a cocktail from the on-site bar and pull up a chair at an outdoor table and just enjoy the scenery.

Water lilies are abundant and provide perfect photo opportunities.

There are two on-site restaurants available. The Carriage House is open for breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner seven days a week. The Turtle Bar is located in the same building if you are looking for a more casual atmosphere. Latil’s Landing is located in the 230 year old French House. Latil’s Landing is open for dinner Wednesday-Saturday from 6p-10p.

I enjoyed breakfast at the Carriage House as part of my B&B experience. Breakfast offered an option of 3 different entrees and was served on gorgeous branded china. Breakfast at the Carriage House was a very relaxing and enjoyable way to start my day at Houmas House.

Staying overnight at the Houmas House B&B is an extra special treat. 4 poster beds, top of the line amenities, soothing colors, and comfortable beds make a stay at Houma House a night to remember.

Accommodations are located on the opposite side of the property and are tucked away in a small wooded area offering guests privacy.

A few tips for staying at Houmas House B&B:

  • Check in for Houmas House B&B at the gift shop. A bell hop will escort you and your luggage, via golf cart, to your accommodations.
  • Be sure to ask the bell hop for ice. I searched the immediate area around my room for an ice machine without success. I attempted to call the gift shop to ask about ice, but they were closed for the night and I was unable to reach anyone else on the premise for assistance. Note, be sure you have all questions answered before closing time.
  • The next morning a bell hop is available to take you to breakfast via golf cart. If you opt to walk be sure to get specific directions to the Carriage House restaurant so you don’t encounter any locked gates (just saying). In all honesty, it’s probably best to accept the ride and then walk back.
  • Prepare to have a wonderful stay. Even with a few snafus the Houmas House was a very indulgent place to stay and I highly recommend it.
