Buying a new mattress is a long-term investment so it should not be approached lightly. It is never a good idea to buy the first mattress that you see on sale, or one that has been recommended by a friend of yours.

Your needs are different than theirs unless you are twins in every way.

You need to pick the mattress that will work the best for you so before you set foot in a mattress store you need to know 10 basic things.

10 Things to Know Before You Set Foot in a Mattress Store

BUDGET

Before you set foot in a mattress store you must know your budget. If you do not already have one set in stone now is the time to do it. You do not want to spend more money on a mattress than you can afford, so know what you must work with before even trying.

SIZE

Take the time to measure the area where your bed will go. You should allow two to three feet in every direction, excluding the sides that you will have pushed up against a wall. Take some measurements and figure out which size will work the best for your specific location.

BED FRAME

If you are working on purchasing a good bed frame, or if you already have one that you do not want to ever part with, you will need to match the mattress to it. If you have a platform base you can go with a foam or hybrid mattress, or if you have a frame that requires a box spring you will have to find a good set that will fit. Make sure that the mattress dimensions that you buy match the measurements of the pre-existing frame.

TYPES

You need to know that there are three types of beds that you can purchase, and all of them have different styles and firmness levels. The three main types are inner spring, foam, and hybrids. All of them have their own specific advantages, and disadvantages. Know what you need before you step foot into the mattress store.

LABELS NOT ALWAYS 100% ACCURATE

You will need to keep in mind that not all the labels are going to give you accurate information. Each company has their own way of rating the firmness of the bed, so even though you need to look at the tags when you are browsing through the store, do not assume that they are one hundred percent accurate.

RESEARCH

You need to spend some time researching brands and firmness ratings. The prefect mattress for your brother or sister may not be the best one for you. Dig into some of the charts found around the internet that tell you what each level of comfort is best for, and which brands would be the best pick for you.

CONSUMER REVIEWS

While you are online doing your research make sure to read some customer reviews on the brands and types that you have chosen to look for. Just remember that people do get paid to write reviews, so go through a platform such as Consumer Reports that gives a detailed review that includes real customer reviews.

GAME FACE ON

When you do go into the mattress shop you will be greeted by at least one salesperson, if not more. You need to be ready for their pitches because they are there to make money. That is not to say that they are not people to listen to, because they do have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mattresses. But beware of the salespeople that only focus on the high-priced styles.

RECYCLE OLD MATTRESS

Not all companies offer to take your old mattress away so that they can have it recycled. You need to do some searching around and find a company that has that option. You need to be aware of the time and space that a mattress can take up when thrown away.

GO FOR COMFORT

The main reason that you are shopping for a mattress is to get one that is comfortable to you, and your partner if you have one. There are so many models available to you from so many sellers that you should never settle for a mattress. Take your time and find the one that is perfect for you.

It is as simple as that. You will want to have done your homework and know what you are looking for. You need to have your budget in hand to use as a bargaining chip and remember that all merchandise for sale has been marked up. Do not ever be afraid to try and get a better deal on the item that you want. If they want the sale, they will at least haggle with you over the price.

Keep in mind that you will spend about one third of your life sleeping. You do not want to get stuck with a mattress that makes sleeping a task, rather than an enjoyment.
