This is the only place in Cleveland with a rooftop experience.

Blues fan or not, a visit to the Gateway to the Blues Museum will certainly leave you with an appreciation for this truly American music and the moving history surrounding it.

On sight, you’ll immediately be transported to the past as this rustic, 3,500 square foot museum is set in the midst of farmland.

At one time a train depot, the small building has been around for as long as the Blues!

The History of The Blues

The Blues is so much more than simply a musical genre. In fact, it is arguably the music that made America.

A stroll through the museum will introduce you to the life and the people that created this soulful music. The Blues is an outpouring of their lives, their experiences, their survival.

See the faces. Read the stories. Let them bring the Blues to life for you.

Meanwhile, you can admire the beautiful collection of guitars throughout the museum. Each of the guitars (and various other instruments including harmonicas) was used by the famous and the not-so-famous across a variety of genres.

Interactive Exhibits

Speaking of guitars, one of the interactive exhibits allows you to try your hand at playing a lap steel guitar and a diddley bow.

If learning all about the Blues has you itching to try it yourself, the Gateway to the Blues Museum has an exhibit for that, too!

Local Bluesman, Memphis Jones, will walk you through how to write and record your very own Blues song. Take it home (via email) and show it off to all your friends who didn’t have the pleasure of joining you on your trip to the Gateway to the Blues Museum.

An Introduction to the Mississippi Blues Trail

The museum is just the beginning to all that the Mississippi Blues Trail has to offer. Equipped with an understanding of the history of the Blues through the artwork and exhibits of the museum, you’ll glean so much more from the rest of the nearly 200 Blues Trail markers.

These markers span across the state and even throughout the world, six of which are right in Tunica.

As a faithful fan of all things music, I couldn’t wait to explore this musical town!

There is so much you can pack into a weekend. I’m sharing some of my favorite things to do. I highly recommend getting to the Grammy Museum if at all possible (they are open on weekends). 

Also, grab some take-away lunch at Crave or Delta Meat Market and drive over to Dockery Farms for a picnic. It’s an incredible historic site and the refurbished cotton gin is worth the visit. Be sure to watch the video that plays on a loop during your visit. There is also the option to hear some blues music while there. Such a cool stop on my Cleveland, MS visit. 

If you can’t fit everything into a 2-night, 3-day visit I, personally, think you should stay an extra day or make plans to return. I was there for a 1-night, 2-day visit and can’t wait to go back!

Just a note, this also makes a great destination for a girlfriend getaway.

Where to Stay In Cleveland

I enjoyed a comfortable stay at The Cotton House which is right in the middle of downtown. I had easy access to so much that Cleveland has to offer right outside the doors of this modern, Southern hotel.

The Cotton House offers free wifi, premium TV channels, and comfortable robes. My favorite bonus amenity was an old-style record player complete with vinyls of some of my favorite blues musicians.

The suite I stayed in had a spacious sitting area where I could snuggle up in my robe and relax to the sounds of the blues.

Where to Eat in Cleveland

You will not have a hard time finding something to eat in Cleveland. The hard part will be deciding where to go. I’m sharing my favorites here and wrote more about Cleveland dining options that you’ll want to check out. 

Hey Joes & Mosquito Burrito are sister restaurants that are a must-visit in downtown Cleveland. Hey Joe’s offers classic burgers, salads, and sandwiches while Mosquito Burrito, obviously, has your Tex-Mex favorites. The open-air, outdoor patio with local, live music made this a favorite stop!

This is also the home of Keep Cleveland Boring, which is a non-profit organization on a mission to make Cleveland exciting through unique events throughout the year.

For coffee, Mississippi Grounds is the place to go for your morning cup o’ joe. Once the home of a service station, this unique coffee spot also offers breakfast, lunch, and dessert. 

Backdraft is an award-winning restaurant with, as its name suggests, a firehouse theme. They specialize in steaks and seafood, and boast a full service bar.  

The Delta Meat Market is both a specialty grocer and a full-service restaurant. I didn’t even have to leave the Cotton House to enjoy some of their meats and cheeses, to take advantage of their grab-and-go options, or to sit and stay awhile.

Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be glad you did. Chef and owner, Cole Ellis, is a James Beard award-nominated chef, and it shows in his delectable offerings!

Also located within The Cotton House is Bar Fontaine. Actually, Bar Fontaine is on top of the Cotton House!

This rooftop bar and restaurant is not to be missed. Not only does it offer European-style cuisine and an extensive array of wines, cocktails, booze, and draft beer, it also offers a one-of-a-kind rooftop view of Cleveland.

Things To Do In Cleveland

Cleveland is a beautiful town, with meticulously manicured landscaping, brick walkways, and victorian lighting. There is nothing quite like strolling along the historic downtown walking trail. 

I could have spent my entire weekend shopping, visiting art galleries, admiring antiques, and enjoying the unique dining. And, well, I did just that! And so much more.

The Sculpture Garden, located in the front of the Bologna Performing Arts Center, is unique and fascinating. Born of a vision to draw noteworthy attention to Delta State University, the Sculpture Garden is home to both temporary and permanent sculptures. You’ll find some of the sculptures scattered about downtown, as well.

McCarty’s Pottery is a stunning collection of handmade pottery. Offering one-of-a-kind pieces that range from artistic to functional, McCarty’s is the ideal place to pick up something to remember Cleveland by.

Be sure to stroll through the gardens and grab a bite to eat at The Gallery Restaurant. I ended up buying a number of gifts while here. There are so many great options you’ll have a hard time deciding which ones to take home. 

Dockery Farms is a must-see stop in Cleveland! It was once a thriving cotton plantation, widely considered the birthplace of the blues. Check out the newly refurbished Cotton Gin and be sure to watch the video there, as well as the video located underneath the service station. I enjoyed exploring Dockery Farms at my leisure and also enjoyed a picnic lunch. I was there mid-week and had the entire place to myself. 

At the Delta Center for Culture and Learning, an entire wall displays face casts of blues legends both living and deceased. These incredible plaster castings were created by a blind artist named Sharon Mcconnell. The Delta Center for Culture and Learning is also the home of the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area.

The Grammy Museum is 26,000 square feet of interactive and exciting exhibits celebrating the power of music. You will also find some sculptures that made their way to the grounds of the Grammy Museum from the Sculpture Garden. This was closed when I was in town, but I’ve heard so many great things about this museum. I’ll be sure the go back when the museum is open. 

The Railroad Heritage Museum celebrates the fact that Cleveland owes its existence to the railroad. Thousands of artifacts, photographs, and documents bring the significance of the railroad back to life. Walk through the 1941 Illinois Central caboose and admire the largest O gauge model railroads in the Southeast.

Here’s some of my favorite things to do in Vicksburg.

WHERE TO STAY IN VICKSBURG, MS

To kick off the weekend, I found the perfect place to stay: The Duff Green Mansion. This Civil War era mansion is the ideal setting for a weekend full of hauntings and history.

My room, The Dixie Room, is also the home of the lost soul of a Confederate soldier who is said to rock the night away next to the fireplace.

Unfortunately, he did not make himself known during my stay.

But everything else about this Bed & Breakfast suited me just right.

A three-course breakfast is served every morning, followed by a complimentary tour of the mansion.

During the tour, I learned all about the couple who built the mansion and how it became a designated hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

The Duff Green is ripe for paranormal activity, and I thoroughly enjoyed searching it out during our stay!

WHERE TO EAT IN VICKSBURG, MS

Vicksburg has no shortage of fantastic places to dine. Everywhere we ate graced us with the southern flair both in hospitality and in cuisine that I’ve come to expect. 

Cottonwood Public House is where you go for pizza and beer. Or buffalo wings and a cocktail.

The Walnut Hills Restaurant is a staple in the area, known for its “World Famous Southern Plantation Cuisine.”

Anchuca Historic Mansion and Inn offers gourmet southern dishes in a casual yet elegant style. The tender, juicy steak is a favorite among the guests at Cafe Anchuca.

The Main Street Market Cafe prides itself in using local and seasonal ingredients. Everything is made from scratch, including Betty’s legendary biscuits.

10 South Rooftop Bar & Grill is exactly what it sounds like: a rooftop grill with a full bar and an incredible view of the Mississippi River.

THINGS TO DO IN VICKSBURG, MS

The historical significance of Vicksburg, Mississippi allows for plenty of paranormal activity. In my short weekend stay, I chased down as much of that activity as possible.

I also managed to stop into some other fascinating places that were well worth my time.

HAUNTED VICKSBURG GHOST TOUR

The Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Tour is a leisurely stroll through Vicksburg’s oldest and most haunted neighborhood.

Haunted tours are offered on Friday, Saturday, & Sunday nights at 7 and 8:30pm. Tickets are $25  and kids under 5 they are free. The neighborhood is full of beautiful homes, gardens, and churches, but it was the restless spirits we were focused on during this tour!

MCRAVEN HOUSE

The McRaven Tour Home is considered the “Most Haunted House in Mississippi,” as well as the “Time Capsule of the South.” McRaven offers 3 different tours: Historic, Haunted, and a Combination tour.

VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK

Home to Vicksburg National Military Park, this is the 2nd largest military park in the United States. During the civil war, both sides agreed that wining Vicksburg was vital to winning the war.

One of the largest Civil War battles was fought on this land.

Today you can walk, bike or drive the park, visit the monuments erected by states to honor their fallen and learn about the turning point of the war. 

For a more in-depth experience hire tour guide, Morgan (the same Morgan that leads the Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Tours) . He’ll make multiple stops throughout the park and share stories about the historical significance of each stop.

If you plan on visiting the park a guided tour is definitely the way to go for a fully 

VICKSBURG CEMETERIES

Vicksburg National Cemetery has 116 acres that hold the remains of more Civil War Union soldiers than any other cemetery in the nation.

17,000 Union soldiers have been laid to rest here, more than half of which have nothing more than a number on their grave marker.

The Cedar Hill Cemetery is where Confederate soldiers of the Civil War were buried. It is known as “Soldier’s Rest,” and is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries still in use in the United States.

DOUGLAS THE CAMEL TOMBSTONE

Within Cedar Hill Cemetery, a headstone pays homage to a special kind of Confederate soldier named Old Douglas. He was a beloved camel of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry, Company A, known as “The Camel Regiment.”

He was a one hump camel who carried whatever his regiment needed him to. He paid the ultimate price on June 27th, 1863 when he wandered too far from his post and was shot down by a sharpshooter.

Legend has it, he continued to help his fellow soldiers by being a source of much-needed sustenance.

OLD COURT HOUSE MUSEUM

The Old Court House Museum in Vicksburg holds thousands of artifacts. You’ll find the Confederate flag that was never surrendered, an original Teddy Bear given to a local child by Teddy Roosevelt himself, and so much more.

The courthouse is one of the most historic structures in Vicksburg, and it has hosted Ulysses S. Grant, Booker T. Washington, and other household historical names.

BIEDENHARN COCA-COLA MUSEUM

Anyone who has ever enjoyed a refreshing Coke will appreciate the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum. The very first Coke was bottled here in 1894.

Reminisce through a variety of original advertisements and memorabilia, then top of the visit with a Coke float from the candy store.

LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM

The Lower Mississippi River Museum will satisfy all the questions you’ve ever had about the Mississippi River.

Through interactive displays, you’ll learn about the history of the mighty river as well as the science of water flow and the fish that currently call it home.

HISTORIC VICKSBURG MURALS

On the Historic Waterfront in Vicksburg, you’ll find the Riverfront Murals. The flood wall has become a canvas that beautifully displays the past, present, and future of Vicksburg.

Or maybe you’re looking to drink the same water that so many successful authors grew up on in Greenville.

This high-end restaurant offers fresh and local cuisine and an excellent bar. You can choose from dishes that include lamb, shrimp, or salmon.

The steak is cooked to perfection, but tastes even more exquisite when accompanied by something from the bar.

Room service for The Lofts apartments come from the fine foods served at The Downtown Grille.

You can also book their private room, appropriately named the Blues Room, for special events.

● The Greenville History Museum – housed in another restored, historical building, the museum does an excellent job of introducing you to Greenville. You’ll walk through significant events that made Greenville what it is today, including the 1927 flood.

● Greenville Writer’s Exhibit – Inside the William Alexander Percy Memorial Library is this exhibit honoring Greenville’s rich literary heritage.

● The Mississippi Blues Trail – Take an unforgettable journey through the history of the music that made America: the blues. Several Blues Trail markers are nearby The Lofts.

● Birthplace of Kermit the Frog – This quaint museum celebrates the life of the Muppets creator, Jim Henson, and his favorite frog.

The hotel’s executive suite offers a master bedroom with a king-size bed. You’re in for a treat in the luxurious bathroom – 6 shower heads, glass walk-in shower, two vanities – one for her and one for him, and a beautiful clawfoot tub.

There’s a large sofa in the living room. There’s also a kitchenette and the covered porch is easily accessible from this suite.

Shearwater Suite

This suite has a master bedroom with a king-size bed and a private bath, a sleeper sofa in the living room, full kitchen, and entry to the patio.

Sawgrass Suite

This room has two queen size beds. It also has a private bathroom and a kitchenette. The covered patio is accessible from this suite as well.

Islander Suite

This suite is located on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible. The suite has a king-size bed and its own bathroom. It also has a kitchenette and is accessible to the patio.

Pelican, Heron and Canopy Suites

All three suites offer a king-size bed, a private bathroom, a kitchen or a kitchenette, and a way to a covered patio. Heron and Canopy may be connected for bigger groups/families – completely unique for these two suites only.

Lily, Oyster, Fern, and Palmetto Suites

All these suites are located on the hotel’s first floor and offer a king bed each, walk-in glass showers, and kitchenette. Both the Lily and Oysters have private seating areas and are accessible to the porch. The Fern and Palmetto suites lead you to the back courtyard.

If you’re a fan of the blues, you probably recognize the name John Lee Hooker. The Hooker Hotel stands in homage of this great bluesman. And he certainly was great!

You’ll find his name in the Blues Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. And that’s not even the half of it.

The Hooker Hotel is in Clarksdale because it is believed he was born in this bluesy town. You don’t need to have any idea who John Lee Hooker is, though, to thoroughly enjoy this 745-square-foot AirBnB. It is a two-bedroom guest suite in the midst of the historic Arts & Culture District of Clarksdale.

On the ground level of the former Clarksdale Telegraph Building (circa 1897), the Hooker Hotel is newly renovated to reflect its roots. It truly is a work of art in itself.

Speaking of art, the Hooker Hotel is full of artwork curated by local artisans, all true to the Delta Blues. From the bottle tree that greets you at the entrance to the painting of John Lee Hooker himself, and even the repurposed bathroom door, the entire flat is a nod to Mississippi talent.

Each of the two bedrooms in the Hooker have king size beds with vintage “Magic Fingers” included. It has all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.

But an excellent bonus is its location. Everything you’re looking for in Clarksdale is within walking distance of the Hooker’s

Stepping inside either the Hooker Hotel or the Squeeze Box is stepping back in time. The artwork and decor celebrate the blues down to the smallest detail.

The Squeeze Box is also on the ground floor and boasts a veranda right outside the door. It has one bedroom with an amazingly comfortable king size bed and an X-ray style photograph display serves as the headboard.

The Squeeze Box also has all the amenities you could hope for in an AirBnB and even more.

Small towns are kind of my jam. I love the slow pace, charm, and hidden gems that usually go undiscovered, for the most part, by those who prefer big city adventures.

In 2005, Katrina demolished nearly everything along the coastal road.

In fact, ground zero for Katrina is just a few miles down the road in Waveland.

New Orleans got all the Katrina press, but these small communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast were leveled and many businesses took years to rebuild.

Thankfully, Katrina couldn’t hold this town down and more than 14 years later, Bay Saint Louis is back to a vibrant community that welcomes ALL visitors with genuine kindness and openness.

I spent my brief visit chatting with locals, listening to stories of life on the coast, exploring the hidden gems and trying to figure out how to come back and do it all again.

The region is perfect for singles, couples, young families, multi-generational, girlfriend getaways, and snowbirds.

Honestly, regardless of what type of traveler you are, there is something for you here in Bay Saint Louis.

Plus, it’s location couldn’t be any more perfect.

Only an hour from NOLA there’s absolutely no reason not to add a visit here on to your New Orleans adventure.

This harbor gives boaters the opportunity to easily visit the town.

Transient slips are available for free for up to four hours.

Tie up the boat, walk across the street, have a delicious meal, go shopping, visit the beach and then head back out.

15 unique and independently owned eateries and pubs dot the tiny community of Bay Saint Louis.

These independently, mostly woman-owned, boutiques offer unique and fun items with lots of beach-themed options (adore).

Angel Trees

Live Oak trees are so important to Bay Saint Louis residents. When Katrina destroyed a number of the trees the wood was turned into Angel Trees.

Carved by an Indiana chainsaw artist, Dayle K Lewis, there are 6 “trees” located throughout town.

Stop in at the visitors center to see one and get the location of the other trees.

This Property is Condemned Movie Walking Tour

This 1966 drama starring Robert Redford and Natalie Wood was filmed in Bay Saint Louis.

Today, you can visit 5 filming locations complete with storyboards that have a photo of the scene from the movie so you can see it then and now.

All the locations are within an easy walk of the train depot. Pick up a map at the visitors center where you’ll find the first stop.

100 Men DBA Hall

A stop of the Mississippi Blues Trail the 100 Men DBA Hall is a historic music hall that welcomed the likes of Etta James and Ottis Redding.

If possible, attend an event or at least stop and check out the epic murals on the side of the building. So much history is stored between these walls.

Mardi Gras Museum

Ahhh and ooohhhh over Mardi Gras gowns that have been worn by members of the Krewe of Nereids.

The museum is free to visit and is located in the historic train depot.

Open Monday-Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm

History of Hancock County Exhibit

Another reason to visit the historic train depot. 

The exhibit showcases travel, work, education, worship, entertainment, music, and hurricanes. Well worth the stop.

Golf Carts

Arrived by boat? Want to leave the car at the hotel?

You can cruise around BSL in a golf cart. So much fun to scoot around town in these electric carts.

Stop in at the BODEGA to rent your golf cart.

Starfish Cafe

If you want to experience something more than just satisfying your hunger, go to Starfish Café. The restaurant is famous not only for its tasty food but also because of how the restaurant values the community and how they are training up and coming culinary rock stars.

The restaurant ingredients like vegetables, herbs, and spices come from their own backyard and the rest are locally sourced.

Their menu is ever-changing and will depend on the ingredients they have available.

No prices are printed on their menu either – the diners just pay what they want. This encourages all to come at Starfish. Everyone is welcome.

Farm Market

Thinking of cooking a hearty meal while in Mississippi? Or you just want to taste something homemade or something fresh?

Bay St Louis Farmers Market has loads of fresh garden produce for sale.

The community farmers market has lots of choices to offer: from organic fresh local produce to homemade baked goods, jellies, local honey, handcrafts, hot tamales, plants and more!

Rise early and be there Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon before vendors sell out.

Old City Hall

Word on the street is that the Old City Hall could be haunted.

I ran out of time and heard about this possible haunting too late during my visit to actually investigate, but if you are interested in the paranormal it’s worth a visit.

The building is over 100 years old and once held the city jail. Stories of objects moving, doors opening and closing, footsteps, and bright lights.

St Rose de Lima

Home to one of the best Southern Gospel Choirs in the country and its altar features an extraordinary mural of an African Christ figure rising before a live oak tree. St Rosa de Lima will make you want to attend church just to hear that choir sing.

Second Saturdays

Shops and galleries of Old Town BSL are open to shop after hours. Second Saturdays feature local artwork, antiques, shopping, dining, and live music.

The Arts

The arts are alive and well in Bay St. Louis and is staying that way with the Creative Arts Center.

The center, located at the corner of Washington and Central, is a gathering space for emerging arts. Offering classes for everything from pottery to metal works.

Nearby is The Arts, a non-profit dedicated to promoting art in everyday life in Hancock County, Mississippi. They host a number of events throughout the year including the growing and popular Arts Alive festival hosted in March.

Sandy Beaches

Not only does Bay St. Louis offer up beautiful sandy beaches they do so with free parking! Unheard of in most beach communities so an extra nice treat here. Bring your beach gear and plan to stay a while.

Walkable Community

Once you park your car in Old Town Bay St Louis you are able to walk anywhere you’d like to go. I love that about this little seaside town. Restaurants, shopping, museums, Angel trees are all within a short stroll making it a perfect way to explore the town.

Oh Those Coastal Views

Honestly, I never get tired of standing on the shore of the ocean and staring out past the horizon.

There is something absolutely hypnotic about listening to the waves crash against the shore while realizing what a very big world we live in. And, oh, those Secret Coast sunsets.

They are not to be missed.

Bay Town Inn

I love this adorable inn by the sea. Seriously!

It’s comfortable, beautifully decorated and designed and located in the heart of Bay St.Louis.

Alice Mosley Museum

Located in the T&N Historic train depot on the 2nd level. Alice Mosley is a nationally acclaimed fold artist, humorist and storyteller (1909-2004).

Many of her originals on display plus there are prints to buy.

I adore her works of art and hope to have the drunk birds (shown above) hanging in my house soon (they were sold out when I visited).

The museum also includes son Tim’s 35-year-old collection of majolica, art pottery, art glass and a range of Americana.

Free to visit.

Bay St. Louis Little Theater

Bay St. Louis Little Theater is a local community theater founded in 1946. Despite the destruction of the old Little Theater due to Hurricane Katrina, a new one rose at its present location.

The theater produces shows that are truly exceptional and features talented actors.

Aside from the traditional shows staged in the theater, it can also turn into dance halls as well as a location for concerts.

This is a must-see and must-experience in Mississippi. Purchase a ticket to watch shows in this multi-awarded theater.

Kate Lobrano House

Aa 1896 Shotgun Cottage is now home to a turn-of-the-century museum located at 108 Cue St in Bay St. Louis.

There are over 30k pieces in the photo collection, county history including census, birth, marriage, deaths, etc.

Plus, the Kate Lobrano House is home to 800 reference books on the county and South Mississippi.

Waveland, MS

There are 3 things you shouldn’t miss at Waveland, Mississippi. First, visit the Lighthouse, originally built to serve as a bathroom at the beach and was finished to become a beautiful lighthouse that attracts more visitors.

Second, do some recreational fishing along the Garfield Ladner Pier with family and friends. The coastal waters offer various fishes for everyone.

Third, visit the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum which features inspirational displays of pictures as well as interactive exhibits that depict the recovery of the city and its people after Hurricane Katrina.

The MS Gulf Coast is Out of this World

Get Outside

Birding, Fishing, Biking, Walking, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Parks, Historic landmarks, shrimping, marsh tour, airboat tour, and so much more. If you love being outside you’re going to love Coastal Mississippi.

If you are ready for warm sand, blue sea, breathtaking sunsets, sun-kissed skin, sea breeze, seafood and laid back afternoons.
