Of course there is shopping. In historic downtown West Monroe you find Antique Alley. They offer a diverse shopping experience with their antique malls and individual stores, boutiques and specialty shops. The variety of shops here also includes the creative collection of local artwork in Courtyard on Cotton’s art gallery and sculpture garden, furniture and home décor at Walsworth & Company and the wide-ranging assortment of goods at The Shoppes on the Alley. Adding a little spice to the collection of specialty businesses is JAC’s Craft Smokehouse, Louisiana’s first smokehouse restaurant. They serve everything from finger-licking good sandwiches to large meat entrees, all featuring gourmet sauces and seasonings.

Downtown Monroe has variety, too. Art Alley features vibrant hand-painted murals on the buildings which house an eclectic variety of shops. Where To Take An Art Stroll

Art lovers have plenty to appreciate here. The variety ranges from the historic setting of the Masur Museum of Art, which features permanent collection of paintings, prints and sculptures as well as different exhibitions throughout the year, to the interactive fun at The Makery, a studio specializing in prints, notebooks, coloring books and workshops. 

Downtown Gallery Crawls are held on the first Thursday bi-monthly (starting in February) in both Monroe and West Monroe. A local favorite, Trapp’s, is on the Ouachita in West Monroe. This casual spot overlooks the river and has views of downtown Monroe. Cajun favorites abound on this menu. Two great ways to start any meal here are Mom Bourque’s Seafood Nachos, with fresh-made chips piled high and covered in creamy goodness and the amazing Fried Ravioli, stuffed with cheese and covered in Crawfish Marlee.

With a river view from Monroe, there’s Restaurant Cotton, which prides itself on showcasing Delta cuisine. The menu items capture the diversity of this region. This is a Warehouse signature, this filet of broiled catfish is topped with shrimp, a rich & creamy herbed sauce, and parmesan cheese. Yes please! Try it with their famous jalapeno cheese grits & fresh vegetables for the full Catfish Sierra experience.

Waterfront Grill, featured in Southern Living and located on the banks of Bayou DeSiard, it is known for its Catfish DeSiard, named for the bayou that flows beneath the deck. The grilled catfish filet is topped with seasoned breadcrumbs, mushrooms, green onions, and a crispy layer of parmesan cheese. To kick it up a notch, all of this comes on top of a bed of boiled shrimp. Try it with their delicious stuffed potato and you will not be disappointed. So good!

2. Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway

Here at Just Short of Crazy we LOVE a good wildlife refuge hike and the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge Wetland Walkway does not disappoint. An easy 1.5 mile loop through marsh wetlands that includes an observation tower overlooking the refuge.

The refuge includes informational kiosks, covered benches, water and most importantly, a bathroom.  The walkway is ADA friendly and is open from sunrise to sunset.

3. Seafood Sensation Trail

You can’t visit Lake Charles and not try the seafood and this seafood sensation trail let’s you try the best of the best. Everything from fish to oysters to shrimp and crabs make their way into local dishes.  Follow the trail and savor the seafood.

4. Boudin Trail

Prior to my visit to Louisiana I had never heard of Boudin. For those who are curious Boudin is made of varying amounts of pork meat, liver, rice, onions, parsley and dry seasonings like salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic powder. It is THE snack food of southwest Louisiana. I tried Boudin as both a link sausage and as a Boudin ball. This is definitely a culinary dish that is a must-try when you are in Louisiana.

Seriously, does it get any more romantic than a carriage ride?  Without hesitation this is one of my favorite things to do in Lake Charles for couples. The Charpentier Historic District in listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The district includes more than 40 blocks of turn-of-the-century Carpenter-style buildings. The tour is only available during the day so that you can best see the architecture and gorgeous gardens. It’s a must tour if you are visiting with the one you love.

Get a Couples Massage at the Spa du Lac

Y’all probably know that going to the spa is one of my favorite things. The Spa du Lac is a blissful experience and one worth adding to the memory books.  Covering 8,700 square feet with facial, massage and body treatment rooms, seperate men’s and women’s locker rooms, saunas, whirlpools and more.  After visiting the spa be sure to indulge in a dip in the pool or take a float on the lazy river.

It’s never a hardship to visit Natchitoches. Plus, it’s our favorite Christmas destination in Louisiana, they throw one heck of a party for the holidays.

Steel Magnolias – 1989

Natchitoches was the filming location for the fictitious town in “Steel Magnolias”, starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis. I mean, what a star-studded film. And, lucky for you, you can walk in the footsteps of these amazing women throughout Natchitoches.

When Steel Magnolias arrived in Natchitoches to start filming, they took great effort to involve many locals in the filming of the movie. Many of the secondary characters are folks that lived in or still live in Natchitoches today. Ask any long time, older resident if they were part of the movie and there’s a good chance, they might have a story or two to share.

Steel Magnolias Girlfriend Getaway Trip Idea

The Horse Soldiers – 1959

Of course, Steel Magnolias wasn’t the first time Hollywood visited Natchitoches. Natchitoches started its Hollywood journey all the way back in 1959.

That’s when popular leading man, John Wayne, arrived on the scene to film Horse Soldiers, a historic fact-based story about a Union mission to destroy a railroad junction deep within Confederate territory set in 1863.

Briarwood is the birthplace and home of Caroline Dormon. Who’s that you may wonder and why does she matter. Well, she was a world-renowned naturalist, author, artist, and the first woman to be hired in the United States Forest Service and she is the reason Kisatchie National Forest exists in Louisiana today.

I wish I lived in a world where Caroline and my paths could cross because I have a feeling her and I would become fast friends. To her, it she was just living her life. To me, she is an incredible example that strong, persevering women can make impactful changes that live on well past their time in this realm.

Her legacy lives on at the Briarwood Nature Preserve where they continue to do the work that she started in the early 1900s by preserving wildflowers native to the south and educating the public.

Meet Caroline Dormon

Born in 1888, Caroline grew up exploring the woods that surrounded her family’s farm, Briarwood. She spent her childhood outside learning as much as she could about the world around her.

In 1907 she graduated with a fine arts degree and went on to do the adulting thing and became a schoolteacher.

Let’s be honest, women in Louisiana in the early 1900s had limited opportunities, but you’ll soon find that Caroline was going to bust through some ceilings and carve a new path for herself.

Eventually teaching led her to Kisatchie Elementary School, located in the town where she had spent her childhood playing in the woods and the place of her family home, Briarwood.

It was during her tenure as a teacher that she watched the destruction of her beloved forest and started working hard to save it.

How She Started In Conservation

From her diary:

In 1920 the Southern Forestry Congress met in New Orleans. This was my opportunity to learn what —- if anything —- was being done to save the southern pines from destruction. The lumbermen had found them and were mowing them down like fields of wheat. Because they nearly always grew in pure stands, all of merchantable size, nothing was left in the wake of the loggers. The inevitable fires followed, and the beautiful longleaf pine country was becoming a desert. -Caroline Dormon

She was met with roadblock after roadblock as she advocated to save the forest. Even then money talked and trees for lumber equaled a lot of money. However, it didn’t stop her from continuing to work to find a way to save some of the land and the longleaf pines.

Eventually, the Louisiana Department of Conservation hired her to devise plans for teaching forestry in public schools, to paint posters, and write bulletins. This was a significant step in the direction of realizing her dream of a national forest.

Over the years she worked to pass a law vital to the creation of National Forest in the state of Louisiana and worked within the state forestry system. Eventually her dream was realized and in the early 1930’s the Kisatchie National Forest was born.

When Caroline wasn’t working to save the forest she wrote nature books, collected rare and native plants, and helped the state write and publish, “Forest Trees of Louisiana.” That book ended up becoming a textbook for many state schools.

Her books include Wildflowers of Louisiana, Flowers Native to the Deep South, Natives Preferred, Bird Talk, and Southern Indian Boy, and countless magazine articles.

Over the years, due to her passion for nature and teaching her home, Briarwood, became the “go-to” place for botanists to learn and had the state’s largest collection of rare native plants.

Caroline passed in 1971, but prior to her death she willed her beloved land and home to a non-profit to carry on her work.

Visiting Briarwood Nature Preserve Today

This is the legacy of Caroline Dormon.

Today, Briarwood is the most complete botanical and wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana and is visited by guests from around the world.

Visitors come to walk down forest trails, see the beauty of the Louisiana iris bog, admire the reflection pool, and to continue to learn about conservation. The forest at the preserve is dominated by Loblolly pines that range in age from 120-300 years old.

During your visit you will have the chance to see critically endangered species, native plants, and a variety of wildlife. Tours include the viewing of Caroline’s cabin, Wing’s Rest Pond, Bay Garden, Grandpappy, and other unique places.

Briarwood is shown by guided tours, which last 1-2 hours, and are available year-round. There is a small gift shop and restroom on site.

What You’ll Find Inside The Store:

Walking through the store is taking a step back in time. Part hardware, part gift shop, part museum, Kaffie Frederick is a unique attraction and a must when you visit Natchitoches.

Stepping through the door of Kaffie Fredericks and knowing it’s been a part of history since 1863 is a really cool experience.

Imagine women in big hoop skirts walking through the store or farmers looking for parts to fix farm equipment.

It’s definitely one of those “if this building could talk” moments.

Think about it this way. The store opened right in the middle of the Civil War, lived through the Great Depression, World War 1, World War 2, the invention of electricity, telephones, automobiles, television and, most recently, a global pandemic!

Now, don’t you wish you could sit down with this building and have a chat?

The store was remodeled in 1932 and there has only been one update since then.

In my opinion, the most unique item in Kaffie Frederick are the two cash registers from 1917 and 1919. These registers are still used on a daily basis to ring up sales.

There is also a platform elevator from 1892 that is used on a daily basis.

Be sure to look up high and on shelves behind the counter along one side of the store to see products from years past that the store used to sell. 

I’ve visited this store a couple times and I always see something new on my visits.

During the holiday season there is a nice selection of Christmas decor upstairs, along with a selection of unique gift items and home decor.

The lower level offers customers everything from nuts and bolts to cast iron pans, kitchen ware and toys.

Not going to lie, this chicken almost came home with me.

The Kaffie-Frederick building is considered one of the best preserved properties in the historic district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I can’t think of a better place to get in the holiday spirit than in the city of Natchitoches. They have been perfecting the art of the holiday season for almost 100 years.

97th Annual Natchitoches Christmas Festival – Louisiana

What started as a one-day festival 97 years ago has grown into a 6-week festival kicking off on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and concluding on the Epiphany, January 6th.

This is a fun-filled, family friendly event that is jam packed with live entertainment, over 300,000 Christmas lights, 100+ holiday set displays, a visit from Santa and more merriment than should be legal. 

All this happens in the historic district and along the historic downtown riverbank.

TURN ON THE HOLIDAYS – NOVEMBER 18

This year they’ll turn on the lights on Saturday, November 18.

Things will kick off with a Holiday Kids Fest and the official “Turn On The Holidays!” starts at 4:30 and goes until 9:30.

There will be live music and fireworks. 

Once the holidays are turned on the lights will light up Natchitoches, LA every evening through Epiphany (January 6th) and spectacular fireworks show happens every Saturday nights through the end of December.

Monday through Friday access to the riverfront is free. However, on Saturdays you’ll need to purchase armbands for anyone over the age of 6.

NATCHITOCHES CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL FUN

On Saturdays, the riverbank area is lined with kid’s activities and food booths. There are also artisan markets happening a couple of times throughout the holiday celebration. This is a perfect time to take a bit of Natchitoches home with you or purchase last minute Christmas gifts. 

Food vendors will be available on the Riverbank 7 days a week throughout the festival.

As you walk along the riverbank enjoy the holiday light displays and set pieces lit up across the river.

NATCHITOCHES CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL ADMISSION

Sunday through Friday access to the riverfront is free.

On Saturdays you’ll need to purchase armbands for anyone over the age of 6

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN NATCHITOCHES

If there isn’t a market happening during your visit you’re still in luck because you’ll find several lovely boutiques and shops in historic downtown. One of my favorite places to shop is Kaffie General Store–Louisiana’s oldest general store.

For a different view of downtown and the riverfront be sure to enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride, available for a fee. 

Hungry? There are any number of restaurants within an easy stroll of the festival area.

CHRISTMAS TOUR OF HOMES

The Christmas Tour of Homes is a holiday tour of uniquely decorated properties in Natchitoches, Louisiana. 

The event will feature docent-led commentaries on the history of each property as well as the unique holiday decorations.

The Christmas Tour of Homes is a self-guided walking tour that you begin at one of these 3 properties:

There will be docents to guide you through the interior of each venue. The entire tour takes can take between 2.5 and 3 hours.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS CHRISTMAS PORCHES TOUR

Enjoy a uniquely curated Christmas tour of “Steel Magnolias” porches.

The tour will begin at The Natchitoches Historic Foundation Headquarters (550 Second Street.).

At 5:30PM we will open our doors for self-guided tours of The Natchitoches Historic Foundation House, hors d’oeuvres, and Christmas cordials. Then beginning PROMPTLY AT 6:00PM, ticket holders will embark on a GUIDED walking tour through our National Landmark District stopping at properties and sites featured in the movie, Steel Magnolias.

The tour will make various stops at select properties where ticket holders will enjoy movie trivia, Christmas decorations, history, and signature tastings along the way.

The actual distance covered is slightly less than a mile and the tour will take approximately 2 hours. Please remember to wear appropriate walking shoes. 

Tours are available on the following dates:

• Thursday, December 7th
• Thursday, December 14th

Tickets are $25 each and available for purchase on the website. Note that you ticket purchase entitles adults over 21 to a complimentary glass of HOUSE wine at Maglieaux’s Riverfront Restaurant following the tour.

If you love boats you won’t want to miss the lighted boat parade on Saturday, December 9th at 5pm.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS CHRISTMAS PARADE

The big holiday parade happens on Saturday, December 2nd at 1pm. You’ll want to get there early to save a spot along the parade route.

VISIT SANTA CLAUS

As with all Christmas celebrations you just know you’ll have the opportunity to find Santa Claus.  Starting December 3rd until December 23rd visit with Santa Claus at the Santa Claus house from 6pm-8:30pm. Visits are free, but Saturday visits do require an armband for Riverbank access. 

The Santa House is located on the South end of the Downtown Riverbank.

Cookies with Santa (available for an additional fee) is happening from 10am-4pm on Saturday, November 18 and Saturday, December 9.

WHY YOU SHOULD GO TO THE NATCHITOCHES CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

Honestly, this is one of the best small town holiday celebrations that I’ve attended, and I’ve been to a fair share.

I love the setting in Louisiana’s oldest city with the river on one side and historic downtown on the other with its brick paved street.

It’s a magical backdrop for an incredible Natchitoches Christmas season. It’s a little step back in time and I’m here for it.

NATCHITOCHES MEAT PIE & MORE

Oh, also, be sure to grab some famous Natchitoches meat pies while in town. It’s kind of like a Michigan pastie. A handheld pie filled with delicious goodness! Or some hot gumbo. Or go wild and grab both.

I always say yes to both. As a northerner I must get my southern foodie fix when I’m in Natchitoches and I’m never disappointed.

CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK

After you enjoy the Natchitoches Christmas Festival on the Riverbank take a quick 5-minute drive to Christmas In The Park for more Christmas light fun.

Christmas in the Park is fun for the entire family with three hundred thousand (300,000) LED lights and decorations, tasty holiday treats, nightly Christmas character meet and greets, and much more. 

The event will kick off on Black Friday for its official “turn on the lights” weekend, then resume December 3rd and run through December 25th most days of the week.

Be sure to check their event calendar to make sure they are open when you’d like to visit.

It offers a little local flavor and produces some of the best rum in the region.

Their rum is crafted the Louisiana way in copper pots using 100% natural unrefined Louisiana cane sugar and molasses.

Touring the distillery I could tell that they take pride in their product and knows how to do rum right.

The tour starts with a quick video in the viewing room and then you’ll have a chance to tour the distillery.

There were quite a few barrels of rum aging.

Some of the rum is aged for 18 months, but most are bottled within 5 to 6 weeks.

During the tour, you’ll have the chance to see how the rum is aging in the barrel and maybe give it a little sniff test or taste.

Be sure to check out this fantastic painting on the wall during your visit.

They offer a varieties of rum including: Silver, Spiced, and Satsuma.

The Satsuma recipe is created using Satsuma fruit and is, hands down, my favorite of the three rums.

After the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to taste each of the rums.

The staff and owners are excited to share their product with visitors and happily pour you samples while sharing stories of life in the bayou.

During my visit, they created a few different cocktails for us to try and I’m sharing my favorite recipes with you.

The cocktail recipes are simple and only require a few ingredients.

Both of the recipes I’m sharing are Satsuma cocktails. 

SIGNATURE BAYOU RUM COCKTAIL RECIPE

1-8ounce glass of Simply Lemonade
1 shot Bayou Silver Rum
1-2 shots of Bayou Satsuma Rum

Directions:

Pour the lemonade in a cup, add the Bayou Silver Rum.

Mix and then slowly add the Bayou Satsuma Rum to the top.

The satsuma will stay towards the top of the drink creating a pretty cocktail to serve to your guests.

SATSUMA BLUEBERRY LEMONADE COCKTAIL RECIPE

8 ounces of Simply Blueberry Lemonade
1-2 shots of Bayou Satsuma Rum

Directions:

Fill glass with ice.

Add Lemonade.

Add the Rum.

Stir and Enjoy.

The shop, located at the corner of Jefferson and Johnston Streets, and directly across from the Blue Moon Saloon is a throwback to ice cream shops of the past.

Selections include hand-dipped ice cream, sundaes, malts, sherbet flips, ice cream sodas and more.

Many of the treats are crafted the traditional Borden way….the old fashioned way. In addition to the ice cream option, Borden’s offers a few savory selections as well (hot dogs, nachos, Frito pie, etc).

Seriously, for ice cream lovers this is the place to visit. It’s such an iconic stop on your visit to Lafayette, LA. The outside of the building is perfect for all those IG feeds out there in need of more great images.

The inside, with its retro vibe, offers up even more fab photo ops.

When you visit, place your order at the counter, pull up a chair at one of the tables or at the ice cream bar and enjoy a little sweet treat in a nostalgic setting; the one and only Borden Ice Cream shop in the entire freaking world!

I stopped by on a chilly, rainy afternoon so the only real choice, for me, was a cup of coffee with a big ole scoop of vanilla ice cream in it.It was a nice way to warm up while enjoying delicious Borden’s ice cream.

By the way, if you’ve never had a scoop of ice cream in your coffee I highly recommend it. It’s like coffee with creamer on steroids 🙂

When you visit Lafayette be sure to take the time to visit Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe.

It’s a fun and unique experience that you can’t have anywhere else!

Floating through the swamp with Cajun Pride Swamp Tours of New Orleans Plantation Country was a great way to experience nature up close and personal.

CAJUN PRIDE SWAMP TOUR

Cajun Pride Swamp Tours is located an easy 20-minute drive from New Orleans and is a short 1/2 mile off of US 10.

The dirt parking lot has plenty of free parking. It’s a short stroll from the parking lot to the ticket building and boat dock.

If you don’t have a car during your NOLA vacation, Cajun Pride Swamp Tours will pick you up from your New Orleans hotel.

We drove and arrived just in time for the tour and were able to sit at the front of the boat.

Cajun Pride introduces guests to life on the Manchac Swamp, a privately owned waterway without any other recreational boats in the area.

Nolan, our tour guide and boat captain, had us loaded and underway within a few short minutes.

Quietly gliding through the swamp waters it’s not long before we spot our first gator.

As Nolan continue to guide us through the swamp he shares stories of Cajun life in Louisiana and tells us about the wildlife we are seeing all around us.

Alligator Spotting Tip

Look for consistent ripples, like little waves, in the water
and chances are you’ll spot an alligator.

Be sure to watch the shores for masked bandits (aka raccoons). During our tour, these adorable critters watched us from the shore.

Captain Nolan tossed a few marshmallows their way, small bickering ensued until more marshmallows landed nearby and all was peaceful again in the animal kingdom.

As we continued along the swamp we saw many, many alligators and a few varieties of birds including a snake bird and a blue heron.

Nolan continues his narrative and I finally learn about the origin of Tupelo Honey and how Cypress trees are now a protected tree and can’t be easily harvested.

I also learn interesting facts about other critters found in and near the swamp and I’m pretty sure I don’t want to jump in the water anytime soon.

Nolan assures us we would be just fine in the water. I’ll take his word for it as I don’t have any desire to test his theory.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of alligators and wildlife I spotted during this 1.5-hour cruise. I lost count of the number of alligators, but they were plentiful.

Towards the end of the cruise, Captain Nolan brought out a small alligator for us to hold. It is so cute!!

The best time to visit Cajun Pride is probably Spring or Fall.

In the winter and summer, the alligators tend to stay lower in the water.

I think we were just lucky to be in Louisiana on a day when the weather wasn’t unbearably hot which is why we spotted so many alligators during our tour.
