All of them are serving up good food and a good time. Most are located in or very near downtown Beaumont making it easy to visit while you’re in the area. 

I’m sharing the restaurants I’ve personally tried and enjoyed, with a couple I want to try next time!

Places to Eat in Beaumont Texas

Katharine & Co

Katharine & Company, located in the historic Mildred Building in Beaumont, is a gourmet restaurant that serves some of the best food throughout the week.

The menu includes fresh salads, homemade soups, house-made sandwiches, and from-scratch desserts, as well as beer and wines.

New York Pizza & Pasta

Pizza and pasta barely begins to describe what you’ll find on the vast menu at New York Pizza & Pasta. 

Have a hankering for fried calamari? Mediterranean salad? Ribeye steak? Salmon fillet? Shrimp Modo Mio? 

They’ve got all the gourmet Italian eats to satisfy every palate. They pride themselves in their Old-World cooking style, making dinner here an unhurried, quality experience.

Rao’s Bakery

Rao’s Bakery brings the sweet taste of Italy to Beaumont, Texas. They are famous for their Mardi Gras King Cakes that they ship out all throughout the United States.

They were also the first in Texas to produce and sell Gelato, Italian ice cream.  Rao’s is a great place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and of course a delicious variety of pastries, cakes, and desserts of many kinds.

J. Wilson’s

J. Wilson’s is known around Beaumont for its attention to detail. Fresh ingredients, carefully crafted in house, adorn every plate.

Fried shrimp, flank steak, stuffed chicken breast… everything is served like artwork on cast iron plates. J. Wilson’s has a great bar menu and offers brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Tacos La Bamba

Tacos La Bamba offers up typical Mexican food. Not the kind you might find up north in my neck of the woods, mind you.

But the authentic Mexican eats that take Taco Tuesday (and everyday) to a whole new level at a great price. They even offer breakfast tacos! Burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, and more can be found at this Tex-Mex restaurant.

Carmela’s Mexican Restaurant

Visit Carmela’s for traditional Mexican cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The menu includes all your favorite Mexican food options like flautas latinas, enchiladas, and classic tacos. Let me recommend Carmela’s famous fajitas!

Floyd’s Cajun Seafood Company

Floyds fuses Texas and its Louisiana neighbor with its southern hospitality and cajun way of life. The Floyds of Floyds have perfected their passion: the Crawfish, committing their lives to finding just the right flavor combinations to wow even the harshest critic. If you enjoy oysters you absolutely must try their famous Oyster Nachos. Happy hour is offered Monday-Friday

Struggle Street Brewing Company

Crafting their own beer right in Beaumont, Texas, Struggle Street Brewing Company is proud to be Texan. Stop in to try out their beer on tap. Their creativity keeps the tap options exciting.

Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp

Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp, right next to Mamma Tia’s on Calder Ave. in Beaumont, offers a lively and fun dining experience with great music and casual vibes. Specializing in Mexican Cajun seafood, their must-try dishes include the Catfish Basket and Steak Nachos.

Mamma Tia’s Bistro

Mamma Tia’s Bistro, a newly opened gem in Beaumont, Texas, offers a fresh twist on dining with its unique “Mex-Italian” fusion. Combining Mexican and Italian favorites like pizza, pasta, wings, and sandwiches, the bistro serves up flavorful dishes in a newly renovated space. Be sure to try their famous Peach Bellini—it’s a must!

Ouachita Live Concerts

Downtown West Monroe puts on a fabulous evening at the Ouachita Live outdoor concert series held the last Friday of the month (September and October) in Alley Park. Bring your own chair and feast from the food trucks, Beer, and wine will be on-site. Come shop downtown before the show. 

Landry Vineyards Concert Series

Landry Vineyards Fall Concert Series – Multiple Dates Wine and live music – it doesn’t get much better. Landry Vineyards hosts not to be missed concerts throughout the fall season. Hear live music by local bands, sip on delicious wine, and eat from local food trucks. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie the day away.

Indian Village Harvest Farms

Fall farm bounty and frights: At Indian Village Harvest Farms Find all types of produce for sale from the Cooks, neighboring farms and other area small farmers. Don’t leave without some of their homemade ice cream.

Skeleton Lane

For shivers down your spine all October long, drive through Skeleton Lane, October 1-31, 2024, when giant 12 feet tall skeletons line Tower Drive in Monroe. Skeletons are purchased and decorated by local businesses in the community to benefit the Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum and ARCO.

Scarecrows in the Garden at the Biedenharn Museum & Gardens

Have a spooky good time at the 5th Annual NELA Scarecrow Competition at the Biedenharn Museum and Garden, October 8 -12. Area non-profits create imaginative and fun Halloween displays for celebrity judges and for visitor admiration. Games in the garden and more details on the website above. Additional events for kids, crafters and foodies can be found on the calendar. Biedenharn was the first to bottle Coca-Cola – don’t miss more memorabilia in this dual museum that also features his daughter’s Bible collection.

Northeast Louisiana Celtic Festival

Highland Games, celestial Celtic music, food, art and jewelry: The Northeast Louisiana Celtic Festival is back October 5 at Lazarre Park on the riverfront in West Monroe. The fest features artisans and craft vendors, live music, a kid’s zone, and more. Food trucks will be selling Celtic themed menu items for all to enjoy. Register to participate in the free Highland Games at the festival.

Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge Annual Fall Celebration 

Celebrate Nature Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge Annual Fall Celebration on October 19 is an exciting, educational, and fun day on the bayou with wide range of activities, including opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, annual photo contest exhibit, animal displays, a nature book sale, free face painting, engaging science-based fun and the turning of the Blue Goose Migration Marker.

Lazy Dog Acres 

This respite is a place for guests to experience the pastoral life while gathering for weddings, for solitude and rejuvenation. It’s located on 15 acres near Ehrhardt, a tiny town that has preserved much of its history and slow way of life.

The renovated farmhouse has also retained its character and charm, offering a cozy yet elegant ambiance. Each of the three rooms are designed to accommodate a different getaway style. Stable View

For an in-town experience with plenty of dining and attractions, head to Aiken. In the late 19th century, as the railroads pushed farther south, Aiken became the home of the famed Winter Colony where Vanderbilts, Astors and other Golden Age notables vacationed. Rates from $99 to $139 for one-and two-bedroom, one bath cabins with equipped kitchens.

Save On Lodging

Wisteria Cottage Bed and Breakfast is a rustic two-bedroom, one bath 1940’s Bed and Breakfast cottage on a picturesque 25-acre farm. Wander the native and heirloom plants and herbs at Lill’s Herb Garden. Room rates start at $50 per night. Call for reservations.

Things To Do In Thoroughbred Country

Free and low-cost activities

Bring a jug and refresh at God’s Acre Healing Springs. Indigenous people believed in the springs’ natural healing powers and brought wounded Revolutionary War soldiers here. The acre of land surrounding the springs was legally deeded to God by its owner in 1944. The nearby Mennonite Church welcomes all to enjoy a Sunday morning or evening service.

Stop in front of the Barnwell County Courthouse and see the unique vertical sundial that was given to the town by a former state senator. Legend has it that this is the only vertical sundial in the U.S. Although it was erected two years prior to standard time, it keeps within two minutes of that. A fun challenge: it’s harder than you think to try and tell the time.

Stop and smell the Lavender at King George Lavender Farm and Mercantile, open seasonally for U-pick lavender, oil distillation demonstrations, events and weddings. Inside the Mercantile is a warm, welcoming atmosphere filled with lavender products, olive oils and home decor.

Find exquisite local art and craftsmanship at Little Red Barn Pottery and Art Gallery, owned by Master Potter Liz Ringus, who showcases works of 35 South Carolina artists and artisans. Explore Ringus’ traditional South Carolina face jugs and Paw Print Pottery. Also find local honey, jams, antiques and gorgeous hand-stitched quilts made by area Mennonite women.

Where To Eat in Thoroughbred Country

Miller’s Bread Basket is a family run Mennonite restaurant serving daily meats and vegetables, such as meat loaf and fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, fresh homemade breads, pies and more.

Country Cupboard is an authentic Pennsylvania style deli, with bulk foods, a bakery and health food store. Meat and cheeses are from Ohio’s Amish Country, and a selection of take-home meals are deliciously prepared. Deli opens for lunch.

Peruse gifts and hand-made items and have a quick lunch of sandwiches, hot dogs, seasonal soups and soft serve ice cream at Healing Springs Country Store.

No trip to South Carolina is complete without barbecue! Have a taste-test at several, including Bobby’s Bar-B-Q Buffet, which also serves fried chicken and other favorites.

Duke’s is a local chain with a faithful following in multiple locations. Their all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet restaurants can be found at the following locations: Bamberg; Blackville and Aiken. Both offer traditional Southern vegetables and desserts.

Before the Robertsons there were the Biedenharns and they have left quite a legacy here. The Biedenharn Museum & Gardens encompasses a historic home, beautiful garden and two museums that combine to create a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors. Joseph A. Biedenharn was the first bottler of Coca-Cola® and the museum showcases memorabilia including a collection of vintage signs and a Model T Coca-Cola delivery truck.

A friendly soda jerk tells stories of “Mr. Joe” in a replica soda fountain. Next door, visitors will find an amazing collection of Bibles that began with a single gift to Emy-Lou Biedenharn, Joe’s daughter. Today the Bible Museum includes a permanent collection of rare and historically important Bibles along with changing exhibits throughout the year.

Both museums are flanked by the Historic Biedenharn Home and exquisite ELSong Garden. The home was built in 1914 and its rooms reflect the life of Emy-Lou, who loved music, nature and family. Outside, the English garden adds beauty and seasonal variations.

Chennault Aviation & Military Museum tells the stories of three historic chapters in the nation’s and Monroe’s history. The museum is in the last remaining classrooms of the Selman Field Navigation School, the largest school of its kind in the U.S. during WWII. More than 15,000 navigators were trained here during WWII.

The story of the birth of Delta Airlines from a regional crop-dusting service is also told through exhibits and memorabilia. And lastly, the life and career of Louisiana native General Claire Chennault, leader of the famed Flying Tigers of WWII, is told here.

The extensive exhibit showcases the world’s largest collection of Chennault artifacts. The museum grounds also feature a growing outdoor display of historic aircraft and vehicles.

If you have little with you that need to burn off some energy head to Excalibur Family Fun Center, a popular spot for vacationing families. A soaring rock wall, host of arcade games, giant indoor playground and 3,000-square-foot laser tag course are all a part of the fun. Outside, two go-kart tracks, batting cages and miniature golf add even more options. 

Where To Eat & Drink

Monroe native and award-winning Chef Cory Bahr is a Food Network Star and Food & Wine “Best New Chef”, as well as chef and owner of Parish Restaurant & Bar. Outdoor dining is available which is always my choice when the weather is nice.

For lighter fare head to Standard Coffee Co. , which is much more than a coffee shop. In addition to a curated coffee selection, the shop also has a creative lunch menu of soups, sandwiches and bowls.

Where To Stay

There are plenty of popular regional and national hotels to choose from in Monroe-West Monroe.

In addition, there are unique options like Logtown Estate a stunning bed & breakfast. The home was built in 1847 and, surrounded by a pecan orchard, a corn field and the Ouachita River, exudes Louisiana character.

For a downtown bed & breakfast experience, Hamilton House Inn is the perfect spot. This two-story historic building offers five unique guest rooms and outstanding homemade breakfasts.

Where To Shop In Downtown West Monroe

Of course there is shopping. In historic downtown West Monroe you find Antique Alley. They offer a diverse shopping experience with their antique malls and individual stores, boutiques and specialty shops. The variety of shops here also includes the creative collection of local artwork in Courtyard on Cotton’s art gallery and sculpture garden, furniture and home décor at Walsworth & Company and the wide-ranging assortment of goods at The Shoppes on the Alley. Adding a little spice to the collection of specialty businesses is JAC’s Craft Smokehouse, Louisiana’s first smokehouse restaurant. They serve everything from finger-licking good sandwiches to large meat entrees, all featuring gourmet sauces and seasonings.

Where To Shop In Downtown Monroe

Downtown Monroe has variety, too. Art Alley features vibrant hand-painted murals on the buildings which house an eclectic variety of shops. There is an exclusive selection of apparel, accessories and housewares, both vintage and modern, at The Good Daze. For a retail excursion like no other Revival Design and Consign, is the place. A stellar combination of home and garden items fill the shop. These are only the beginning and there are so many options, shoppers might want to take a break and plan their retail strategy with a beverage at Standard Coffee Co.. Created by local chef Cory Bahr, the shop has cool vibes and an impressive menu selection. 

Where To Take An Art Stroll

Art lovers have plenty to appreciate here. The variety ranges from the historic setting of the Masur Museum of Art, which features permanent collection of paintings, prints and sculptures as well as different exhibitions throughout the year, to the interactive fun at The Makery, a studio specializing in prints, notebooks, coloring books and workshops. 

Downtown Gallery Crawls are held on the first Thursday bi-monthly (starting in February) in both Monroe and West Monroe. These festive events are a great time to discover the amazing collections of art from the eight galleries that participate. Food, drinks and live music are always a part of the evening events. 

Where To Dine In Monroe-West Monroe

Downtown dining offers plenty variety, too. Waterfront restaurants here give diners a range of menu options along with views of the river. 

Trapp’s is on the Ouachita in West Monroe, with views of downtown Monroe, and serves Cajun favorites in a casual atmosphere. Mom Bourque’s Seafood Nachos, with its fresh-made chips piled high and covered in creamy goodness, is a local favorite.

In Monroe, the inventive menu at Planter’s Gastropub includes duck pizza, gas station fried chicken and more and it keeps flavor at the forefront. 

At Parish Restaurant & Bar the creations of award-winning Chef Cory Bahr show off his passion for food and local ingredients through seafood dishes, steaks and more. He uses a variety of techniques to put his own spin on classic dishes from his beloved Delta region.

For a more casual dinner, Victory Pizza & Flying Tiger Brewery is a favorite. The pizzeria is located inside this locally themed brewery and serves handcrafted pizzas using fresh ingredients and dough made daily.

Where To Stay In Monroe-West Monroe

There are plenty of well-known branded hotels to choose from when staying in Monroe-West Monroe. For a unique downtown option, many choose Hamilton House Inn bed and breakfast. This two-story historic building in Downtown West Monroe offers five unique guest rooms and outstanding homemade breakfasts.

For an off-the-beaten path option, and a chance to enjoy one of the local wineries, a stay at Grape Escape cottage at Landry Vineyards can’t be beat. The cozy cottage is located near rows of grapevines and guests even get a complimentary bottle of wine and a free tasting.

Flown in fresh daily the bagels are served up plain, toasted, with or without cream cheese, or even made into a delightful bagel breakfast sandwiches.

There are usually a dozen or more different flavored bagels to pick from and about that many cream cheese choices. The daily bagel choices are listed near the front window so you can see at a glance what’s available. There are also a few breakfast bagel options and, of course, they are very accommodating with requests.

I’ve had the breakfast bagel sandwich a couple times, usually on an everything bagel with bacon, egg, and flavored or plain cream cheese, depending on my mood.

However, they do offer seasonal cream cheeses and I’ve heard that the pumpkin cream cheese is absolutely divine. I need to get back to Wytheville in the fall to experience that.

It’s important to note that Ghetti’s also offers a number of pastries that are made in house and delicious. I’d recommend having a bagel for breakfast and grabbing a pastry for later.

Of course, you have to have coffee with your bagel, and luckily Ghetti’s serves up some of the best with Blackline Coffee. For the hard core coffee drinkers there is 0 Dark 30 coffee which will wake you right up. I prefer Sunday Morning which is a little more tame, but still delicious.

Submarine Museum

Located in nearby St. Marys, the St. Marys Submarine Museum is the largest museum of its kind in the South and the fifth largest in the country. Featuring nearly 5,000 square feet of exhibits and displays on two floors, visitors will experience history come alive with a wide variety of images, paintings, artifacts, models and rare historical documents, many of which have not been made available to the public until now. Woodbine Opry

Neutral Zone Studios

Calling all “Star Trek” fans! Previously home to the web series “Star Trek Continues,” Neutral Zone Studios houses meticulously constructed Star Trek sets under the guidance of the series’ Executive Producer, Vic Mignogna. This not-for-profit, 9,600-square-foot facility is a full-service turn-key film studio offering a full-scale suite of Constitution class starship sets including the bridge, transporter room, engineering and more. Now open to the public, “Star Trek” fans delight in Fan Appreciation Weekends giving them the opportunity to get up close and personal with the infamous sets. Blue Bridge Coffeehouse is named for the famous drawbridge on the nearby St. Marys River, begins serving its craft coffees, breakfast and lunch items and pastries early so it’s convenient for visitors traveling through or pausing to enjoy the ambiance of Kingsland.

Espresso Base serves both craft drinks and breakfast and lunch entrees from what looks like a tiki bar, so it’s a quick and easy stop. But the expansive yard on the side also invites travelers to stop and relax beneath ancient live oak trees or enjoy the occasional live music and special events.

Steffens Restaurant not only serves up breakfast dishes made from scratch (also lunch and dinner) but it’s also a treat for the senses. The restaurant dates to 1948 and its history covers the walls. Don’t miss the Southern standard of biscuits and gravy!

Wandaful Things, a Best of Georgia Award winner, Chef Wanda Clark stretches the breakfast envelope. Clark loves to bake as well, so save room for one of her pastries.

While you’re trying your hand at trivia night, for instance, sample the Frips, chef and owner Nick McCoy’s version of potato chips topped with bacon, blue cheese cream sauce, balsamic and chives. One popular dish is the Shrimp Grand Marnier, fried local shrimp with bacon, Grand Marnier sauce, sliced oranges and diced tomatoes. It’s easy to see why it’s been labeled the “Five Star Dive Bar.”

Angelo’s Italian Restaurant guests dine in-house on Italian specialties such as calzones and manicotti or grab one of their innovative pizzas to go. Either way, diners are sure to enjoy this favorite community eatery that’s centrally located near hotels along Interstate 95. Angelo’s been going strong for the past 40 years and filled with locals nightly, which speaks volumes.

Krazee’s is an experience! You’ll realize this isn’t just any ice cream parlor when walking through the doors and spotting the homemade flooring consisting of comic books. They roll their ice cream creations too, using an ice cream base with gourmet ingredients (you chose), then pile on more sweet goodness and call it Krazee Rollz. Need more enticement? Waffle cone chips topped with ice cream or yogurt and a host of ingredients make up their decadent Nach-Oh!z. But there’s so much more. And yes, it’s another Best of Georgia Award winner.
