Looking for authentic meat and three dining, then look no further than Miller’s Bread Basket in Blackville, South Carolina. 

This family-owned restaurant has been serving up classic Southern dishes for over 30 years.

Miller’s Bread Basket also offers a range of other classic Southern dishes, such as meatloaf, country fried steak, cabbage rolls and baked chicken.

You absolutely MUST try their homemade bread! Delicious, freshly-baked bread is served warm with every meal.

Choose from white, wheat, butternut, cinnamon raisin, garlic onion and cheddar cheese breads.  Try one or try them all, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 

Whatever you do, make sure you leave room for dessert. Miller’s offers up everything from pies and cakes to cobblers. 

Track Kitchen | Aiken

If you’re a fan of breakfast food and you’re looking for a place the life long locals visit then check out The Track Kitchen.

However, a visit here comes with a couple caveats: It’s a bit quirky, it’s VERY informal, rustic and no frills. Food is all made to order so bring your patience and, to be honest, customer service is questionable.

That being said, if you want a chill breakfast spot and you have the time and patience for it add them to your dining list.

This is a blue collar breakfast spot where the menu is written on a white board and coffee is plentiful.   

The Track Kitchen is located inside the historic Aiken Training Track, which has been in operation for over 75 years. 

Don’t forget your wallet because this is a cash-only establishment.

Oh, did I mention they may or may not be open when you stop by. As a rule, the restaurant is only open during racing season, unless the staff wants a day off.

God’s Acre Healing Springs 

This is an artesian well that Native Americans believed had healing power. There are stories of wounded Revolutinary War soldiers being brought to the well to drink and heal.

On any given day of the week there will be people filling large bottle with the artesian water. Take your own water bottle and drink your fill.

Wisteria Cottage Bed & Breakfast

A rustic 1940s cottage with two bedrooms and a bath is a charming bed and breakfast.

The ideal setting in the beautiful countryside is reason enough to book a stay here. Be sure and peek at Lill’s Herb Garden and request a genuine, fresh Mennonite breakfast.

Miller’s Bread Basket 

A Mennonite restaurant where you can fuel up with meat and threes along with salads and homemade bread. This is a very popular restaurant and baked goods sell quickly. Their hours can vary so, as always, I recommend calling ahead to confirm.

BARNWELL, SC

Barnwell State Park

Barnwell State Park was built in the 1930s on a coastal plain and offers three lakes, five cabins (equipped with bath and bed linens, cooking and eating utensils, satellite television and many other amenities), 25 campsites, water and electrical hookups and space for a handful of RVs.

Onsite activities include a nature trail, fishing, boating, picnic shelters, seasonal swimming and meeting facilities. 

Barnwell County Courthouse & Sundial

Built in 1789, the original courthouse was succeeded by several buildings on the present-day site which was constructed in 1878-79. A state Senator from Barnwell, Joseph D. Allen, gifted the town a unique vertical sundial in 1858 and it remains a sought out town icon even today.

Located in front of the Barnwell County Courthouse. The unique vertical sundial was given to the town in 1858 by Joseph D. Allen, who was the state Senator from Barnwell at the time.

Legend has it that this is the only vertical sundial in the United States and though erected two years prior to standard time, it keeps within two minutes of that. A fun challenge for when you stop here is to try and tell the time using it. It is harder than you think, but will be an interesting break from a road trip through the region.

Little Red Barn Gallery

The historic building, dubbed Little Red Barn Gallery, was moved here in the early 1950s and is the home to the works of 35 South Carolina artisans.

Master Potter, Liz Ringus, moved her pottery business to this location in 1998 and today you can view her hand-turned Paw Print Pottery as well as the showcased works of local artisans onsite. 

King George Lavender

Growing up on a farm, George Poole has loved animals and agriculture since childhood, while his wife Elinor has had a lifelong love of gardening and horticulture, especially lavender.

This love match grew into a dream business when they bought a farm in Barnwell in 2016.

The farm currently grows 8,000 lavender plants and offers u-pick days as well. Lavender is used to create fragrant and soothing products for bath and body, pet and home care and décor.

MONETTA, SC

Monetta Drive-In 

Otherwise known as the Big Mo, this is one of only two operating drive-in movie theaters in South Carolina.

Although the Monetta theater has roots dating back to 1951, it was later closed before being revived in 1999.

Currently the theater sports three screens and shows double features.

DENMARK, SC

The par-71 course stretches over 5,000 yards and includes several doglegs, water hazards, and bunkers.

The course boasts several challenging holes, including the 338-yard par-4 fifth hole that features strategically placed bunkers and water to the right of the green.

The ninth hole, a 487-yard par-5 leading up to the clubhouse, offers a stunning view of the club’s iconic architecture and is flanked by water on both sides.

However, the most remarkable hole on the course is the par-3 17th, which demands a tee shot over water to a tiny green that is encircled by water, wetlands, and a bunker to the back right.

That summer he put a brush to paint to create his first Coca-Cola sign on the side of McCartha’s Hardware store in his hometown. 

This otherwise ordinary moment would actually begin his lifelong love for painting Coca-Cola and make him one of America’s foremost landscape artists.  

Over the next few years he would paint over 100 similar signs which, subsequently, shaped the future of his art.

As Harrison’s paintings evolved, they often depicted scenes from the local landscape and culture. These works of art have become an important part of Denmark’s artistic heritage. 

His Coca-Cola sign paintings, in particular, have gained national attention and are recognized as iconic examples of Southern pop art. 

Beyond art, Jim Harrison’s love for Southern cooking was deeply rooted in his childhood, where he fondly recalls his mother’s kitchen filled with fresh homegrown ingredients that helped him develop a genuine appreciation for the flavors and traditions of Southern cuisine. 

His cookbook, “Southern Cooking and Southern Stories,”  is a testament to his love for this cuisine and continues to be cherished by those who share his passion

Langley Pond Park has options for both those who are looking for a challenge or just want to practice. Follow along the beautiful Langley Pond on this 18-hole-course for champion level and amateur level play.
