ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS ALONG I-80

We try to take a break every couple of hours during long road trips and we are always looking for odd roadside attractions.

I found these roadside attractions along I-80 that make a great place to stop and stretch your legs for a few minutes. Don’t miss these roadside attractions along I-80.

I’m sharing some of the best stops from New York to San Francisco.

Roadside Attractions I-80 Pennsylvania

The Boulder Field, Lake Harmony, PA

Get out and stretch at this boulder field in Pennsylvania.

There are different sized and shaped rocks, some up to 26-feet long in a field that was created by glacial action.

This is a great spot to get out of the car for a bit. Be sure to wear good shoes.

T-Rex and Bigfoot, DuBois, PA

I found Bigfoot in Pennsylvania!!!! Now I can say I spotted Bigfoot. You can find him at DooLittles Station. In addition to Bigfoot, you’ll find his friend, T-Rex. Be sure to grab lunch or a treat while you’re there.

Sharon, Pennsylvania: Daffin’s Chocolate Kingdom

Chocolate lovers are going to love this stop. A 400-pound turtle, frog, deer and other woodland creatures. So very sweet.

Warren, OH: David Grohl Alley, World’s Largest Drumsticks

This is the PERFECT stop for music fans. An entire alley of art dedicated to David Grohl plus you’ll be able to see the World’s Largest Drumsticks.

Clyde, Ohio: Ice Cream Cone-Shaped Building

Stop for a tasty treat at this ice cream cone shaped building. How fun!

Whiting, Indiana: Mascot Hall of Fame

Seriously, a great place to run off extra energy. This 25,000 square foot facility pays tribute to America’s furry freakish sports ambassadors.

Gary, Indiana: Fusion: Steel Workers and Fairies

Pretty cool sculpture of fairies flying out of a massive molten pot!

Freedom Rock, Menlo, IA

Make a stop at this patriotic rock.

Walcott, IA World’s Largest Truck Stop

This is a great stop to note on your road trip guide.

Plus, you can grab a bite to eat, fill up the car with gas and stretch your legs.

Located at 755 W. Iowa 80 Rd.I-80, Exit 284 Walcott, IA.

If you have some extra time, head over to Winterset, IA and visit the Bridges of Madison County. It’s about 20 minutes south of I-80 and worth the stop if there’s time. A fun stop to see the covered bridges.

Just in case you need a refresher of the awesomeness that is Captain Kirk…I guess instead of a road trip planner, Captain Kirk would have used a space trip planner 😉

NOTE: Riverside, IA is about 25 minutes south of I-80, but for Trekkie fans it’s worth the detour!

York, Nebraska: Marble Museum: World’s Largest Collection

Proof that there is a museum for everything. This one is all about marbles. If you’ve lost yours by this point on the road trip with the family this might be a good place to look for them.

Potter, Nebraska: 24-Hour Duckpin Bowling

Need a stop in the middle of the night. This is just the spot to try your hand at duckpin bowling.

Buford, Wyoming: Smallest Town In America

This used to be the smallest town in America with a population of 1, but that resident left over a decade ago and it’s now considered a ghost town.

Cheyenne, Wyoming: Giant Coffee Pot

Be sure to check out this coffee pot water tower when you stop for gas at Sapp Brothers fuel.

Pine Bluffs, Wyoming: Tee Pee House 

This home is shaped like a giant teepee with smaller teepee surrounding it. Definitely a unique home.

Where to eat in Butler County

Harmony Inn

Have a hauntingly good time at Harmony Inn. They offer up great food, beers on tap, live music, and fantastic ghost stories. Seriously, what’s not to love 😉

Wunderbar Coffee & Crepes

Located in the historic opera hall in Harmony, Wunderbar is roasting up their own coffee beans and creating incredible savory and sweet crepes. It’s, honestly, a great way to start your day in Butler County.

Domenico’s Ristorante

This will fit your need for some really good Italian or indulge in their award-winning pizza. It’s a pretty popular place so if you visit during a busy time be prepared to wait, but it’s totally worth it!

Log Cabin Inn

The Log Cabin Inn is built around a historic cabin that dates back to the early 1800s. Its cozy environment and great food make it a must when visiting the area.

They are cooking up aged Black Angus beef, chops, steaks, fresh seafood, sandwiches, soups & salads. You won’t be able to say no to their homemade desserts and for my friends that enjoy a good cocktail, there is a full-service bar.

Where to explore in Butler County

Stroll Historic Harmony

Harmony has a very interesting back history. The town was founded in 1804 by a group of Harmony Society of German Lutheran Separatists who were seeking religious freedom. In the 19th century, they quickly become America’s most successful communal group.

They called themselves Harmonists and believed that Christ’s return was imminent. (Side note, someday I’ll write a story about my childhood and my religious zealot parents who, throughout my entire childhood and till this day, believe that Christ will be showing up any minute now. It will be a pretty entertaining read)

They resided in Harmony, PA for 1o years before relocating to New Harmony, IN.

The Harmonists, a celibate culture to remain spiritually pure, eventually had no one left to carry on their beliefs or way of life. By 1905 there were only three members remaining and the society dissolved.

The Harmonists community may be extinct but the footprint they left behind is not. The small historic town is fascinating to walk around.

The entire area is historic district and still retains the old architectural character of an old German village. There are more than 50 buildings with 9 of them belonging to the historical society.

Be sure to make your way over to the Harmonite cemetery where no headstones stand and a massive one-ton revolving door guards the entrance to the sacred ground where 100 souls are buried.

Maridon Museum

This is the only museum in the Western Pennsylvania region with a specific focus on Asian Art and Culture coupled with German Meissen porcelain.

Four galleries, full of incredible works of art, make it a very enjoyable museum without being overwhelming. In addition to the galleries, the museum offers many special events and activities that would be well worth attending if you happen to be in the area.

Westpark Alpacas

Be sure to check their website prior to your visit to see if they are hosting any farm days. If they are, its great fun to go out and play with the alpacas. They are so adorable and may just have you trying to figure out how to start your own alpaca farm.

Nautical Nature Boat Tour

A 45 passenger enclosed pontoon boat takes guests on interpretive boat tours on Lake Arthur. You’re able to walk out onto the front deck to enjoy the view or take photos. The guides do a great job sharing the story of the lake, area and wildlife.

Note: I abhor 8-legged critters, seriously, they freak me out, if you have similar feelings please note that a number of them joined us on our cruise. I spent a great deal of time out on the deck where it seemed to be more critter free.

Food Walking Tour in Saxonburg <<–A Must!

Combine two great things: delicious foods + a charming small town complete with historic narration. Honestly, what’s not to love? 100-year-old preserved buildings line the quaint Main St of Saxonburg.

Today restaurants, artists, boutiques and more reside in these buildings and are ready to welcome you to town.

The best way to discover the hidden gems of Saxonburg is with Burgh Bits and Bites food tour. New and old restaurants provide tastes along the tour. You’ll try everything from soup to German meats to coffee (hello!!!) and so much more.

Not to Miss Festivals in Butler County

Living Dead Weekend

This cult classic was filmed over 50 years ago in Evans City. Every year the city throws a party to celebrate the zombie film that started it all. Join the fun, take a location tour, meet celebrities, browse exhibits,  sit in on panel discussions and so much more. Held every October.

Mars New Year Festival 

The New Year on Mars isn’t the same as the New Year on Earth.  Instead, it is celebrated every 687  Earth days and the town of Mars, PA celebrates the planet’s New Year with a big celebration.

A blast off dinner celebrates the actual New Year followed by breakfast the next morning. Then, in May, the town hosts Mars Exploration Celebration Days which is a festival that partners with NASA to bring education and awareness to Mars exploration.

Great fun for the entire family.

The Best Day Trip from Pittsburgh

Outdoor Adventures North of Pittsburgh – Visit a Prairie, Take a Hike

I was in town for a short two-night, three-day press visit.

We crammed as much outdoor fun in as possible considering the first day it stormed.

That didn’t stop us from exploring Jennings Environmental Education Center.

Luckily, the park ranger had a pair of rubber boots I could borrow and I grabbed my umbrella and headed over to the prairie.

Every time I see a prairie my mind goes to the Ingalls Homestead in South Dakota and makes me happy.

Funny how life can be full circle like that and walking around the Jennings prairie brought up a lot of great memories.

Shortly after we ventured into the parks main attraction, the 20-acre prairie ecosystem, the skies opened up and forced us back inside where we waited out the rain while playing in the education center.

Once the deluge of water passed we explored the trails next to the education center.

These trails go through the woods and over to a wetland area complete with an observation deck that is perfect for bird watching.

Later in the year, the famous Blazing Star will be in bloom which will make a visit to Jennings even more spectacular.

A heads up, the park is home to the endangered massasauga rattlesnake. I say that just so you are aware.

The likelihood of actually seeing one is incredibly slim. Stick to the well-maintained trails and you’ll be fine.

Jennings Environmental Education Center is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset.

Outdoor Adventures North of Pittsburgh – SUP at Moraine State Park

Fortunately, the skies cleared the next day and I was able to practice my non-existent SUP skills at Moraine State Park with SurfSUP Adventure Eco Tours.

Last year, I stepped on a paddleboard for the very first time and had a great instructor from Crooked Roots Adventure that gave me the confidence I needed to attempt paddleboarding again.

Getting back on a board for more practice is exactly what I needed and Ian from SurfSUP Adventures was the perfect guide. He quickly whipped our group of nervous novice paddleboarders into shape and had us on the water in no time at all.

We were all a bit concerned about taking a dip in the lake, but Ian assured us the water temps were one degree above refreshing and we’d be fine. Thankfully, we all stayed on our boards during our two-hour adventure.

Sadly, I still haven’t mastered standing up on my board while it wobbles about so I spent my board time on my knees, a perfectly acceptable way to paddleboard, in my opinion.

After everyone had their sea legs under them we were off to explore the narrow passages and coves of Moraine State Park’s Lake Arthur.

We spotted numerous birds, paddled past rock cliffs, floated under a bridge to go explore a beaver dam and on the return watched an Osprey fish for food.

All in all a perfect way to spend a morning north of Pittsburgh, out of the city, one with nature and learning a new skill.

I love that SurfSUP takes photos during adventures and provides FREE digital images! That is unheard of anymore and I love it.

That way I can just enjoy the experience and someone else captures it for me. LOVE.

By the way, when I was back at the shore a friend held my board steady and I was able to stand.

Now I know for next time. Once I was standing everything was great and I’ll definitely master the technique on my next outing.

Even if you have never stood on a paddleboard you will love the SurfSUP experience and Ian’s confidence and instructions will have you gliding across the lake in no time at all.

Outdoor Adventures North of Pittsburgh – Looking for Yeti

Ok, so here’s the thing I know this probably doesn’t really count as an outdoor adventure, but it is a case of finding a Yeti and it does require being outside so I’m just going to leave it right here.

The Snowman shaped shaved ice shop is a one of a kind roadside attraction in Butler County, PA. Chatting with the owner I learned that the Snowman has made its way across the U.S.

It started life in the Southwest (either New Mexico or Arizona) and over the course of many years made its way East where it finally found a permanent home in Pennsylvania (lucky locals).

As you can imagine the Snowman gets a bit beaten up by the elements, but that doesn’t stop it from having great shaved ice treats!

Located on the main drag to Moraine State Park it is a perfect place to cool off during those hot summer days AND you can find Yetis and Unicorns here.

Well, a type of Yeti anyways. This Yeti is a blend of shaved ice in your choice of flavors with vanilla or chocolate ice cream added to the cup. It’s kinda the best of both worlds.

They also have Unicorn ice here, which I have on good authority are epically delicious.

More Adventures, Culture and Fun Ideas in Butler County

WHERE TO EAT NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – North Country Brewery

Of course, you can’t visit an area without checking out the food scene and there are some fantastic options available. No need to deal with city parking or crowds.

Simply head out of Pittsburgh and take your pick of a long list of delightful bites waiting to satisfy your hunger.

For craft beer aficionados a stop at North Country Brewing Company in Slippery Rock is Butler County’s first brewpub and is an absolute must.

Not only do they have great beer (order a flight!), but their food is spot on as well!

Located in a historic building with plenty of seating this is a great place to just hang out with friends and relax a while.

We ordered spinach dip and a hummus plate to share with the table. The hummus had a hit of heat to it and was delicious as was the spinach dip. Seriously, those were long gone by the time our meals arrived.

After indulging in the appetizers I was glad I ordered a salad. Pittsburgh has a thing about putting fries on sandwiches and salads. I’m not opposed to fries, but I took them off my salad and enjoyed them on their own.

Plus, there is incredible woodwork all around the building. Be sure to check out the doors and use the restroom.

I can’t speak to the men’s room but walking into the women is a bit like falling into an Alice in Wonderland scene. LOVE IT.

Just to note, North Country Brewery also owns The Harmony Inn, my favorite haunted restaurant in the area.

WHERE TO EAT NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Browns Country Kitchen

After our paddleboard adventure, we were HUNGRY (what is it about outdoor adventures that amp up the hunger?) so we made our way to Brown’s Country Kitchen.

This is downhome cooking at its best.

A cozy restaurant where you can tell the locals have been visiting and enjoying the food for years.

In addition to an extensive menu with so many great choices (it took me FOREVER to decide), they also have an array of homemade pies and cakes.

Serenity now, I almost caved and forgot all about my “don’t eat sugar” lifestyle. It’s not so much that I don’t like sugar, it’s really the fact that it doesn’t like me and causes me to need a nice long nap after indulging 🙁

Brown’s Country Kitchen hit the spot an everyone walked away happy and full.

WHERE TO EAT NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Juniper Grill

I arrived in Butler County the night before the trip officially began and treated myself to dinner at Juniper Grill based on the recommendation of my hotel (Thanks Best Western Plus Cranberry Township!) and I was not disappointed.

The Avocado Chicken salad may just be the absolute best salad I’ve ever had in my entire life and I have some serious experience with salads.

Little did I know that we would be returning there as part of the press trip and I was thrilled.

I didn’t even bother looking at the menu on my return visit.

I ordered another salad and we also had guacamole (made perfectly and just the way I like it with no cilantro) and a quesadilla to share with the table.

Everything was delicious and the ambiance was perfect.

The bonus is that its an easy 5-minute walk from the hotel to Juniper Grill.

WHERE TO SHOP NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Playthings Etc.

Butler County proved that they can hold their own when it comes to excellent shopping choices. No need to battle the city traffic or drive around in circles looking for parking.

Simply head north and treat yourself to some of the most unique stores in the area, in my opinion.

Playthings Etc. is a family toy and hobby shop that has been dubbed the world’s coolest toy store. After visiting I respectfully and wholeheartedly agree with that designation.

First, the store is shaped like a B52 bomber (or a space ship, depending on how you look at it).

Second, the entry door looks like you are opening a huge vault which I guess you are since you are opening a vault of FUN.

Thirdly, this store has an abundance of unique toys that you’re just not going to find elsewhere.

Plus, many of them are open and waiting for you to give them a try.

If you don’t want to try them the employees are more than happy to demo them for you.

I sat inside this box fan tent and could have spent an hour chilling in there. I’m not sure what was so relaxing about it but it was a total zen moment.

From classic toys to futuristic toys, from hobby products to educational toys, there are toys for everyone.

With over 3,000 toys to choose from, and new toys always arriving, you will find something for everyone.

WHERE TO SHOP NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Appalachian Rock Shop & Jewelry Emporium

Mix your love of rocks from around the world with an eclectic assortment of jewelry at the Appalachian Rock Shop & Jewelry Emporium.

The store is tucked behind a house. Take the well signdriveway leading to it is well signed and there is a large parking lot.

Inside the store you’ll find rocks from around the world, geodes that you can break open, stones to make your own jewelry and a large selection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.

The store has many unique gifts that will have you finishing any upcoming gift buying you need to complete in a snap.

WHERE TO SHOP NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Baldingers Candy

Right down the street from the rock shop is Baldingers Candy and food store.

Talk about being a kid in a candy store. What a fun place to shop. All the candies from my childhood plus more that were new to me.

Additionally, they have a great selection of foods from Pennsylvania AND a massive selection of cookie cutters.

Let’s just say a little bit of everything made its way back to Michigan with me.

WHERE TO STAY NORTH OF PITTSBURGH – Best Western Plus Cranberry Township

If you’re exhausted from your adventures north of Pittsburgh grab a room at the Best Western Plus in Cranberry Township.

The last time I visited Butler County I stayed here as well and really enjoyed it.

The king rooms are spacious with a sitting area, micro, and fridge. The hotel has amenities like great morning breakfast, pool, gym, and comfy lobby area.

The next time I’m in the area I plan on returning to the Best Western Plus.

Here’s what I recommend for a fun weekend getaway. Be sure to take your sense of adventure with you because you might just be surprised by what you find.

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

One of the must-see landmarks in Potter-Tioga is the Pine Creek Gorge, commonly called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Surrounded by about 165,000 acres of Tioga State Forest, the canyon will catch you in awe with its lavish greenery and bathe you with fresh air.

And, if it just so happens to be a bit rainy on the day you visit still go because even in overcast conditions it’s still a gorgeous sight to see.

The breathtaking canyon starts at the south Ansonia along the US Route 6 and it continues at length for about 47 miles. And to enjoy its magnificent views, come to the Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks.

With a depth of 800 ft, these viewpoints offer nature lovers with the most incredible views. Visit these overlooks any time of the year and they will never disappoint.

The thick hardwood trees display the canyon beautiful fall hues of red, orange, and yellow. And the evergreen trees keep the view green. Indeed, the glacially-carved canyon is stunning year-round.

Ole Covered Wagon Tour

A bird’s eye view of the Pine Creek Gorge from the famous overlooks is undeniably breathtaking but how about going through the heart of the canyon riding a covered wagon? Why not?

Imagine entering into the wild and listening to the sound of the forest with the clippity-clop of the horses’ hooves. And with much luck, you might even experience a close encounter with indigenous wildlife.

Ole Covered Wagon Tours provides 2-hour trips along the canyon plus interesting historical facts about the area from your guide.

Make your week complete with a meal at the famous Wellsboro Diner. For decades, this old-school American restaurant serves sandwiches and breakfast any time of the day. Surely you’ll never miss your pancakes when you’re in Wellsboro.

They also serve a fantastic lunch and dinner menus. And your sweet tooth will also be satisfied by their desserts made fresh daily in the kitchen.

Don’t forget to try their famous dinner special, the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich served with mashed potatoes and gravy. The diner’s good food also comes with a warm classic ambiance.

Who discovered the Americas? We are taught in elementary school that it was Christopher Columbus, but the more you explore and learn the more you realize what you read in school history books is not so accurate after all.

Christopher Columbus may have never set foot on North American soil, but he is still famous in American history.

The Most Important Columbus Collection on the North American Continent

You don’t even have to be a history enthusiast to appreciate all that is the Boal Mansion & Columbus Chapel.

I’m far from an enthusiast yet I was completely absorbed by the tour guide’s stories and stunned by the works of art.

I mean, honestly, y’all, where else are you going to walk through a European chapel complete with contents that were inherited from the Columbus castle in Spain and moved to Pennsylvania in 1909. Ah. MAZ. ing.

So how did the Columbus Chapel end up in Pennsylvania?

I mentioned it was inherited, but here is how it made the thousands of miles trek to America.

In the 1890s, Colonel Theodore Davis Boal, a fourth generation Boal, went to Europe to study architecture.

There he met and married Mathilde de Lagarde, a descendant of Christopher Columbus.

They inherited the Columbus Chapel, originally part of the Columbus Castle, from her Aunt Victoria Columbus and brought the entire chapel contents from Asturias, Spain to Boalsburg.

Some of the interesting artifacts brought with them include an admiral’s desk which the family said belonged to Christopher Columbus himself.

Another valuable artifact on display are two pieces of the True Cross of Jesus said to have been given by Bishop Leon of Spain to the Columbus family in 1817. It is encased in a small silver cross and on display inside the chapel.

You will also find the Columbus coat of arms which contains symbols that represent the family and a Christopher Columbus family tree starting from the famous explorer and continuing to branch out to include Mathilde’s great uncle.

My absolute, hands down favorite part of the chapel are the Renaissance paintings and religious statues from as early as 1400s to 1700s.

You’ll look at these and for a moment you’ll forget that you are standing in a little chapel in the middle of Pennsylvania instead of the Lourvre or the New York Met.

That alone is worth a visit to the Boal Mansion.

A Doorway To The Past

Just a stone throw from the chapel is a nondescript door that looks like it leads to nowhere special. Step through the doorway and step into the past.

Two Centuries, Nine Generations, & Incredible Stories of the Boal Family

In the Boal Mansion Living Room/Library you will find actual signatures of 5 presidents. You will also learn about the family tree connections of Boal, Columbus and even Napoleon.

The armory has a wide collection of weapons such as swords, rifles, and pistols that were used in the Middle Ages and in World War 1.

The Mansion has the original furnishings, artwork, and artifacts belonging to family members for the last 200 years, but it’s the stories behind the items that will stick in your mind.

When You Visit The Boal Mansion & Columbus Chapel

I walked away feeling completely stunned by what I had learned and impressed by the art and artifacts I saw. This was definitely a memorable walk through history and one I can’t recommend enough.

This is one of those hidden gems that travelers dream about finding. The one of a kind place that is seldom talked about, but leaves you feeling energized and like you have the best travel secret on the planet.

The tour of both the Chapel and mansion usually takes 1 1/2 – 2 hours, Tuesday- Sunday afternoons. Tour and other information can be found on their website.

You may feel the need for a pint or two after your tour to continue to absorb all you learned. There is no better place to do this than at Duffy’s Tavern in Boalswood, constructed in 1819. May as well keep the history vibe going while chatting with friends.

Columbus Chapel & Boal Mansion

You don’t even have to be a history enthusiast to appreciate all that is the Columbus Chapel & Boal Mansion.

The Columbus Chapel is a unique opportunity to walk through a European chapel complete with contents that were inherited from the Columbus castle in Spain and moved to Pennsylvania in 1909.

While the Columbus Chapel offers up the largest collection of Christopher Columbus artifacts in North America the Boal mansion showcases world original furnishings, artworks, weapons, tools and other artifacts that belong to family members from the past.

Palmer Museum of Art

For the artists or those who appreciate art, the Palmer Museum of Art should be on top of your list and admission is free. It has been described as “dramatic and exciting.”

The museum houses more than 8,000 artworks in its eleven galleries.

The museum exhibits a lot of American art but also includes European, Asian and African masterpieces from 16th century to modern artworks.

There are paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, ceramics and other works of art on display. Watch out for various exhibits, programs, and events that you will enjoy.

The museum is open every day except Mondays and some holidays.

Penn State All-Sports Museum

View the great athletic past of the Nittany Lions in various Penn State varsity sports at the Penn State All-Sports Museum.

Founded in 2002, the museum preserves achievements, exciting moments and inspiring stories in Penn State sports history including those of football, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, fencing, gymnastics, boxing, wrestling, and other indoor and outdoor sports.

Visit the two-level museum of Blue and White sports history right across Bryce Jordan Center, in the southwest corner of Beaver Stadium.

Penn State Arboretum

You will fall in love with nature over and over again as you visit the various gardens and groves at the Arboretum of Penn State.

If you’re bringing kids with you, the Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden is a must-visit garden where you can join in activities such as planting and harvesting vegetables.

Rose and Fragrance Garden, as well as Oasis Garden and Lotus Pool, are also great gardens to visit.

There are also groves you can visit and enjoy beautiful trees including the Hosler Oak, the first tree ever planted in the Arboretum. Other interesting attractions include Joel N. Myers Sundial and Margery Enes Smith Soaring Waters Fountain.

Who doesn’t like ice cream? Some of the best ice creams are at Berkey Creamery with more than 70 flavors; you’ll have a lot to choose from.

If you can’t decide, try some of the more popular flavors: apple cobbler crunch, bittersweet mint, vanilla bean, death by chocolate and eggnog.

For the cheese lovers in town, the creamery also makes signature cheeses, spreads and dips, cream cheese, and many different types of cheeses.

You will surely have the quality products you expect as the ice creams and cheeses were made from fresh milk from Penn State cows.

You will find lots of rooms to enjoy your ice cream inside with 80 seats, and more than a hundred more seats outside under the canopy and umbrella tables.

Hike Mount Nittany

Complete your visit to State College with the most popular hike in the area – a hike of Mount Nittany. Enjoy nature and great bird’s eye view of Penn State including Beaver Stadium and the community.

Along the way, you can see various trees and flowers and probably catch a view of some wildlife such as whitetail deer and birds. The hike was strenuous for me.

It’s not long hike in distance but it took us about 45 minutes to make it to the top and another 45 minutes to make it back down. Whew. It might have been a tough hike but it was well worth it and a reminder that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Fort Roberdeau

“Fire Away” at Fort Roberdeau’s 200-acre historical site in Sinking Valley. Also known as The Lead Mine Fort, Fort Roberdeau offers schools field trips that include fun and educational activities.

The original fort built in 1778 was valuable to the American Revolution. Reconstructions were done in the latter part of 1930s and early ‘40s and in the ‘70s.

Now, visitors may enjoy a restored barn and farmhouse, a sinkhole, a trail system, and a 2012 log house. Relive the militia days as you learn cartridge rolling, fire starting, and hands-on Ranger skills training.

Canoe Creek State Park

When you arrive you’re invited to find a hat to wear during your tea. Of course, I had to try on a variety of hats to find the one that looked just right.

Our food was absolutely perfect and the scones mouthwatering delicious. I adore a traditional tea and Pamela’s did not disappoint.

Missing home-style cooking? Come visit Tom and Joe’s Diner and feast on special breakfasts or lunches. A family-owned restaurant since 1933, Tom and Joe’s deliver great foods, energetic atmosphere like no other, and service so memorable, you will come back for more.

I love how stepping into Tom & Joe’s diner is like taking a little step back in time. From the black, white and red decor to the wall box jukeboxes at each table. This is a place loved by locals so you should anticipate there being a bit of a wait if you go during the busy breakfast time.

Gardners Candies & Ice Cream Parlor

What’s not to love about finding a hometown candy shop that also dishes up scoops of frozen goodness?  Gardners has been selling candy since 1897 and is considered by many to have the best chocolate in the world.

They are famous for the Original Peanut Butter peanut butter Meltaway®. It’s creamy, smooth peanut butter that is dipped in rich chocolate. There have been many attempts over the years to duplicate this recipe but none have perfected the Gardners success.

In the back of the store, there are historical displays showing the company through the years and is definitely worth visiting. I loved seeing their display of historic Valentine’s Day candy boxes.

From elk to rock people, unique museums to incredible art, to great coffee to incredible food and a chance to stay overnight in President Theodore Roosevelt train car.

Really, a quick stop won’t be nearly long enough to enjoy Clearfield County PA. Here’s why you’re going to love your visit and what you’re not going to want to miss.

What To See and Do in Clearfield County, PA

ELK VIEWING

Did you know that Pennsylvania is home to the largest free-roaming elk herd in the Northeastern United States?

Elk can be seen year-round in the area, but fall is the best viewing time, in my opinion. The fall colors provide a great backdrop to the elk grazing in the fields.  There are a number of great elk viewing areas starting at the elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette. 

When you leave the visitors center take a right back onto the main road and there are a number of other viewing areas just a short drive away.

Plus, if you make reservations well in advance you can take a wagon ride through the fields as you look for elk.

Go early in the morning just as the sun starts to break across the horizon or early in the evening right before dusk for the best viewing times.

During the fall if you listen closely you’ll hear elk bugle. It is such an unforgettable sound and fun to hear. 

GRICE MUSEUM

The Grice Museum in Clearfield, PA is a classic and antique car museum in addition to having a vast array of wild animal mounts. 

Cars are featured from the early 1900’s to today’s specialty cars.

In addition to the gorgeous cars there is an impressive collection of model cars that line display cases along the walls. 

There are over 70 cars on displays and 100s of mounts.

There are two cars on display in the gift shop that you may have the opportunity to sit in for a photo opp.

ROCK PEOPLE

Drive along Rockton Mountain Hwy and watch for the rock families the live along the road.

These adorable structures are just the type of happy that I love to see when I road trip. I love their little twig arms they use to wave to those driving by.

A number of the rock families include a pet which, I must say, wins me over every time.

WINKLER GALLERY OF FINE ART

Located in DuBois, PA this gallery is hiding an incredible gem inside. The last surviving toy carousel built in the 1800s in Europe has found a permanent home at the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art. 

Its an incredible work of art and it’s the only place in the U.S. to see this beauty. In addition to the carousel, the museum has a number of full-size carousel animals and a few other pieces of memorabilia. 

The toy carousel is fabulous, but that does not discount the work of the artists that fill the gallery with paintings, sculptures, photography and other pieces of art from all mediums. 

THE DEPOT AT DOLITTLES STATION

Dolittles Station is an entire entertainment complex that you’re going to want to visit. 

From a dinosaur museum and ax throwing to an overnight stay in a presidential train car to great food and a brewery.

The Dinosaur Museum located at the Doolittle Station entertainment complex is a newer Clearfield County museum and it keeps adding dinosaurs and soon dragons! 

In fact, the dragons are so new that they were still under wraps. They are going to be fantastic. 

The museum opened in 2018 and lets kids and kids at heart walk through the jungle and safely encounter dinosaurs that roar and move. 

The exhibit is ever expanding as new dinosaurs and displays are added on a regular basis. 

There is also a room for birthday parties and a gift shop with the most affordable souvenirs I’ve stumbled across.

After you visit the museum be sure to try your hand at ax throwing, the newest addition to the complex. 

In addition to dinosaurs, dragons and ax throwing there is model railroad museum, putt putt golf, and an ice cream parlor!

BILGER’S ROCKS

Get out and hike at Bilger’s Rocks, rock outcroppings 300 MILLION YEARS in the making. These unique rock formations are so much fun to climb through and around. Honestly, I can’t wait to go back and explore Bilger’s Rocks again, hopefully, when the weather is better. 

We visited on a rainy and cold day (note hat and gloves in photos), but it absolutely did not stop us from having a great time. 

Visit the dining room, crawl through rock tunnels, squeeze through formations, and climb them. You can explore the rocks from above and below.

Visit the “ice cave” so named because of how long the ice stays in the cave and crawl through 25 feet of pitch black until you see a crack of light at the opposite end. A great visit for those that love caves. Me, I’ll stay in the light. 

If you need a place to get out and stretch on a long road trip I can’t recommend Bilger’s Rocks enough. It’s a place you just have to see for yourself to truly appreciate. 

The property also provides picnic tables and camping perfect for those that can stay a bit longer.

A word of caution. When exploring from above be sure to watch for crevices in the ground that are easy to fall through.  

BEAVER MARSH TRAIL

There is a lot of great food and drink happening in Clearfield County and if you want to find a place to walk some of it off look no further than the Beaver Marsh Trail.

PARKER DAM STATE PARK

Parker Dam State Park is a great spot to get out and play. You’ll find camping, hiking to scenic views, numerous trails, fishing, and wildlife watching.

We took a hike to the top of Sullivan Mountain and enjoyed the scenic overlooks of Moose Run Valley. The hike is pretty low key except for the last little bit to the summit. However, just take your time and you’ll be fine. It’s totally worth the effort!

You’ll also want to take the trail that rock hops across the river. So much fun!

CLEARFIELD COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Take a step back in time at the Clearfield County Historical Museum. Set in the lovely Kerr House there are three levels of exhibits.

I highly recommend spending a bit of time on each level that showcases different timelines and lifestyles. 

I did stumble across this Santa Claus figure and I’m pretty sure he moves around at night and might always be found in a different location (shudder). I found this guy in an upstairs bedroom in the corner. When you visit see if he’s in the same place.

In addition to the museum there is an extensive genealogy center is an extensive resource for tracing family lines. They also have a number of published books and maps that you might want to add to your own library.

Where To Eat | Drink in Clearfield County, PA

BOXCAR BREW WORKS

This brewery is creating some of the best brews in the area, in my opinion. Plus, they are pairing it with some delicious foods.  Located at Doolittle Station, the brewery is located in, surprise surprise, a train boxcar.

THE STRAWBERRY TREE TEA HOUSE

This is a delightful place for tea. Located in a historic home the tea house offers up afternoon tea that is hearty enough to get you through the day. From savory to sweet the tea house has something that everyone will love. Word to the wise if pumpkin cheesecake is on the menu save room and order it!

The tea house also has an adorable gift shop complete with tea, tea accessories and some home and fashion items. 

LUIGI’S RISTORANTE

The perfect place to find the Italian food you’ve been craving. Luigi’s is a local favorite and once visitors discover this restaurant they return again and again. Proof of the restaurant’s popularity is obvious by the photos and posters that paper the walls. 

AEGIS COFFEE

Coffee shops are kinda my thing so finding independent coffee shops when I travel is always on my to-do list and I was thrilled to find this one.  This coffee shop moved into an old bank and it is awesome! Great coffee with an incredible atmosphere plus a gift shop in the old vault. Love it! 

HOCKMAN CANDY

Located in downtown DuBois this handcrafted candy shop is filled with delightful sweet treats. The chocolate-covered potato chips are the best seller, but the shop also offers a number of other chocolate options. Definitely a must when you visit DuBois.

APPLEWOOD BBQ

Enjoy Southern style BBQ north of the Mason/Dixon Line. Kyler’s Applewood BBQ provides a full menu with all your favorites including ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. Tip a few of our signature cocktails back with some friends at the bar. 

Apparently I was so hungry when we visited that I forgot to take a photo of my food (SHOCKING, I KNOW!!!). Let’s just say, the food was incredible. I had a piled high pork sandwich that was delish.

Denny’s Beer Barrel & Pub

Home to the world’s largest burger challenges this is a not to be missed restaurant.

We stopped and enjoy a bit of a massive burger, but my main meal was a salad which was quite delicious. 

Where To Stay in Clearfield County, PA

DOOLITTLE STATION TRAIN CARS

DooLittles offers overnight guests a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay in a 1901 Presidential Pullman train car.

The train car sleeps four people comfortably, (can accommodate up to six people) and is equipped with a custom-built shower & bathroom facility attached. It was first built in 1901 and used up until 1952 as the private transport car for the president of the EJ&E railroad. The car is a palace on rails.

Only $200/night and includes a light breakfast.

If the Presidential Pullman is a little more than you need Doolittle’s offers additional refurbished train cars for overnight stays starting at $100/night.

COMFORT SUITES HOTEL – DUBOIS

This is the nicest Comfort Suites I’ve ever stayed in. It is so very lovely. The outside is just beautiful, the rooms are spotless and incredibly comfortable. In addition, the hotel restaurant, the Tannery Bar & Grill, serves up some delicious bites.

Pin Clearfield County to Pinterest

The only downside was that a day wasn’t nearly enough. I need to plan a return trip for a long weekend. I have a feeling Pittsburgh and I could become really great friends.

Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania has 300 steel businesses (hence the name “Steel City”) and 445+ bridges (yes, “City of Bridges”).  

Its industry has kept the city of Pittsburgh strong and it continues to be a great destination for families, couples, and individuals wanting a fun city adventure.

I used a map app on my phone to get around the city and found it easy to navigate. There are plenty of one-way roads and bridges, but if you follow a GPS you’ll be fine.

Parking never seemed to be an issue. I found free street parking and paid lot parking without any problems.

Of course, I visited during March so I suspect that the height of summer would be a different story. The temps during my visit were great and only required a light weight jacket which was perfect.

In 12 hours you can see some great highlights of Pittsburgh. It won’t be everything, but it will give you a good overview and leave you wanting to come back for more.

What To Do In Pittsburgh, PA

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH LEARNING TOWER

Located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh, this National Historic Place is worth the trip to Pittsburgh.

Constructed in Late Gothic Revival it stands at 535 feet tall and is the tallest educational building in the western hemisphere.

Inside you will find 29 Nationality rooms that are constructed and decorated to reflect a school rooms from different nations.

Self guided tours are available and is worth taking the time to explore. It is a lot of fun opening the doors to each nation and seeing what’s inside. Kind of like unwrapping 29 different presents.

All the rooms are great, but the Austrian room is, hands down, my favorite.

THE STRIP

This is one of the best places to shop and eat in Pittsburgh. A historic shopping district between 11th and 33rd along Penn Avenue.

There is a self-guided walking tour available online that takes you to the historic buildings and shares the historic importance.

In the Strip you’ll find street vendors, grocery stores, gift shops, candy stores and, most importantly, great food!

The original Primanti Brothers, famous for their sandwiches, is located here as well as DeLuca’s Diner which is THE place for breakfast. Expect a line at both, especially during the summer months.

NATIONAL AVIARY 

This is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated to birds. Located in Pittsburgh’s historic North Side there are over 500 birds representing 150 species from around the world.

The walk-through exhibits allow visitors an up close look at the birds and even offer interactive programs that allow you to hand feed some of the birds.

The National Aviary is home to one of the largest Eagles I’ve ever seen in my life. Plus, if that wasn’t reason enough to visit, Wookie, a Two-toed Sloth lives in the cloud forest exhibit.

MOUNT WASHINGTON

In my opinion this is one of the best places for great views of the city. From Mount Washington you can view Pittsburgh’s skyline and pick from one of the many great restaurants along Restaurant Row. It’s a win-win situation.

FESTIVALS

 There are so many festivals happening in Pittsburgh. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there are more than 15 festivals. Everything from boat regattas, music events, film & theater events, ethnic celebrations and so much more.

Where To Stay In Pittsburg, PA

During my visit I stayed at Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center which is located near the Learning Tower.

After a fun packed day it was great returning to the Wyndham for a great sleep. Comfy beds and quite rooms were the perfect compliment to our Pittsburgh adventure.

If you’d rather stay on the water, nearby Seven Points Marina, offers an array of fantastic houseboats.

This is the place where you can check “stay in a houseboat” off your bucket list. They are lush and can accommodate 2-8 people depending on which one you rent.

Resort Activities

The Lake Raystown Resort offers up some pretty fantastic activities on site. 

There is a waterpark that features two 380-foot twisting slides, the White Water Innertube Ride, the Atomic Blaster and the Children’s Splash, and Play Pool.

A cruise on the Proud Mary Showboat should definitely be scheduled into your plans. Take a sightseeing, breakfast or one of their dinner cruises. It’s a gentle cruise around the lake with panoramic views of the surrounding area from the top deck.

For those that love geocaches, you’ll find 5 hidden on the property.

Of course, as you would expect, recreational opportunities are abundant here. Boat, jet ski, kayak/SUP, tube, fish (remember to pack your fishing pole), mountain bike, hike, or simply pull up a chair to the lakeshore and enjoy the stillness.

There are boat launches for those that want to bring their own boat or boat rentals are available.

To top it all off, the resort is pet-friendly!

Raystown Lake

Raystown Lake, a 8,000 acre lake, has miles of shoreline that, thankfully, isn’t clogged with mini mansions all fighting for a share of the shore.

Instead you’ll find the lake surrounded by natural beauty.

It’s very seldom you find a lake like this but thanks to the army corps of engineers that is exactly what you’ll get.

In addition to the resort and the marina, the lake has 12 public access areas, picnic areas, beaches, boat launches, campgrounds, trails, hunting, fishing, marina concessions stands and at one end the Raystown dam.

Four Diamond Ranch

At Four Diamond Ranch you can take a nature stroll, play with goats, pick flowers, and shop handcrafted bath and body products. You can even learn to make your own bath and body products with their lotion and potion parties.

Visit on a Friday and take a tour of the farm where you might just be able to snuggle a baby goat and learn more about running a goat farm.

Snuggling baby goats is always fun just be aware that they go poo whenever so you may want to pack a change of clothes or at least have handi wipes on stand-by. Totally worth it though.

Lincoln Caverns

Not far away you’ll find Lincoln Caverns which I visited a couple years back. If you like caves then make plans to visit.

The cave formations are gorgeous. If visiting in the fall they have a haunted cave tour for the Halloween season.

Rockhill Trolley Museum And East Broad Top Railroad

Combine your love for all things rail at this stop in Rockhill Furnace, PA.

During your visit you can admire vintage trolleys, explore railcars, explore America’s industrial past, and take a trolley ride.

While you are there be sure to take a ride of the East Broad Top Railroad which takes you through the scenic countryside.

This is a fun stop for kids and adults alike.

Swigart Automobile Museum

The Swigart museum’s collection contain about 150 cars, of which 30 to 35 are on display at the museum at one time. Cars on display date back to 1896.

One-of-a-kind automobiles include a 1936 Duesenberg 12 cylinder Gentlemen’s Speedster, a 1920 Carroll, and a 1916 Scripps-Booth.

This is the only place in the country where you can see two Tuckers side-by-side, the 1947 “Tin Goose” Prototype and #1013.

In addition to cars, the museum has artwork, antique toys and bikes, as well as vintage clothing, spittoons, license plates, and other auto related items. 

The museum is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through the end of October.

During the winter, while the museum is closed, the museum is busy changing out the cars so that the next time you visit it will be a whole new experience.

Isett Heritage Museum

I wasn’t able to visit the museum on this visit, but I did chat with the museum director and hope to have time to return in the future. 

Isett Heritage Museum is one of the most unique museums in Pennsylvania.  

Mr. Melvin Isett, born in Huntingdon County in 1922, spent his entire lifetime collecting antiques and memorabilia with a dream to open a museum.  In 2001, shortly after Mr. Isett’s retirement, his private collection was opened to the public in a renovated barn on the property.

Now in multiple building, the museum is home to a collection of over forty thousand items from Mr. Isett, his family and donations.

I’m fascinated with the antique camera collection (over 400) and the journals, books, and vintage typewriters on display. 

Greenwood Furnace State Park

Historic Greenwood Furnace State Park protects what is left of the ironmaking community that lived on this land from 1834-1904.

Today, you can explore the 423 acre park, including a six-acre lake, and the surrounding by 80,000-acre block of Rothrock State Forest. 

All the outdoor activities are available including a campground with flush toilets and hot showers. If you’re a camper you know that sometimes those items rank high on the list of amenities. 

Ridenour Overlook And Hawn’s Overlook

Both overlooks are located at the end of Henderson Overlook Road and share a large parking area. 

Hawn’s Overlook is a short jaunt from Ridenour Overlook and the shared parking area. 

Views from Ridenour look towards the north while views are to the south from Hawn’s Overlook. Some consider Hawn’s Overlook one of the best scenic views in the entire site.

It’s definitely worth going and deciding for yourself which is better. 

Honestly, my guess is both offer breathtaking vistas of the valley below.

Where To Eat 

I had the opportunity to try a number of restaurants in the region and recommend the following. It really depends on what you’re in the mood for, but I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these.

The Garden Harvest

A mobile kitchen focused on farm to fork foods. Delish!

Standing Stone Coffee Company

Here’s the deal. I have a complete love affair with coffee. Finding independent coffee shops is always my goal when traveling and Standing Stone Coffee did not disappoint.

Be sure to stop in and grab a cup to go and a bag of beans for back home.

Wildflower Cafe

My friend Liz at Eat, Move, Make and I are ALWAYS on the hunt for the best salads a destination has to offer. I think I found it in Huntingdon at the Wildflower Cafe. 

In addition to offering up a delicious salad they have a really cute gift shop. It’s the perfect stop for lunch, in my opinion.

Muddy Run Tavern

This tavern just moved to a new location and while it wasn’t officially open yet during my visit I can just tell that it is going to be the “go-to” place to hang out and watch a game or visit with friends.  

Lil New York

Well, this was a fun find in Huntingdon. A blend of Latin and Greek cuisine in the middle of Pennsylvania. I’m here for that. 

They are in a tiny location right next to the movie theater, but don’t let that stop you from grabbing some food to go.

Stone Town Cafe & Gallery

Great food in an eclectic setting. Their outside seating area is the perfect place to be on a warm day.

Jenkie’s Joint

Grab lunch and a coffee here when you visit the Rockhill Trolley Museum and East Broad Top Railroad. Great sandwhiches and the iced coffee is a must on a hot summer day.
