If you are looking for the one thing that you absolutely MUST do when you visit St. Louis then look no further than the City Museum. This was one of the best highlights of our visit to the city and is one of the places I most look forward to going back to visit. There is so much to see and do you could easily spend an entire day exploring, creating and discovering at the City Museum.
The City Museum is located in a 600,000 square foot former International Shoe  Company building. It is a delightful mix of fun house, surrealistic pavilion, children’s playground, art studio, and architectural wonders made out of fun unique objects.
The museum boasts features such as old chimneys, salvaged bridges, construction cranes, miles of tile, and even two abandoned planes! Started by internationally acclaimed artist, Bob Cassilly, the museum opened to the public in 1997 and has been acclaimed as one of the best museums by both young and old.
The museum consists of three floors, a mezzanine, roof top attractions and outdoor playground. The roof top is definitely a highlight and is only open during the summer.
Climbing through structures, playing piano, watching a circus performance, cutting snowflakes, creating art, and oh so much more happen at the City Museum. Of course, my favorite things was visiting with the snowflake lady. She has created numerous snowflake pattern books. There are no boring snowflakes in the snowflake room. You’ll cut tigers, lions, and bears oh my. There’s guitars and violins and flowers and dragons and so much more. The snowflake lady is AWESOME and so creative.
Each floor of the museum offers something unique and different that you just don’t find at other museums. The second floor there is a shoelace factory and aquarium, the third floor offers the art room, circus, tiny railroad and more. The rooftop has a bus, ferris wheel, giant preying mantis to name a few. The outdoor playground lets you climb high and into an airplane. How cool is that!
