The Corning Museum of Glass

The museum features the largest collection of glass with galleries of around 50,000 objects and showcasing 3,500 years of glass history. There are various displays of ancient and modern glass artworks.

No wonder the non-profit museum founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works now welcomes about half a million visitors from all over the world.

The Innovation Center is the science and technology glass gallery. In this collection, you will find the glass innovations that have been useful to mankind and have impacted the world including optics, windows and vessels.

There is also the Contemporary Art+Design Wing with beautiful masterpieces from different international glass artists.

Even the Museum’s buildings are a site to behold as the 10-acre campus features glass in its architecture. People liked them so much that it was #136 out of 150 of America’s favorite buildings according to a survey by The American Institute of Architects conducted in 2007.

You’ll see decorations in glass that match the occasion – a Thanksgiving meal with glass turkey and all, or a Christmas tree with glass ornaments. Look for the 20-ton largest pieces of cast glass that were going to be used for a giant telescope but was damaged and was never used.

Find the glass slippers, 2 glass dresses, 15-foot glass tree, a rope with 4.5 million glass beads, ancient Egyptian royal portraits in glass, and many more.

Corning Museum of Glass Demonstrations

Catch the narrated glassworking demonstrations that are performed daily by professional glassworkers. Go to the renovated glass factory building, now the Amphitheater Hot Shop, and be amazed by the show in the 500-seater facility.

They also have a demonstration on glass breaking – yes they break the glass on purpose for this show and you can help break glass with supervision and with protection.

Watch one that showcases how to make prosthetic glass eyeballs. There are hot glass demos, optical fiber demo, and others interesting demonstration.

Corning Museum of Glass Classes

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner of glasswork, there is a class for you at Corning Museum of Glass. Hey, even kids can join in the classes. When you visit, you can take 20-40 minute to Make Your Own Glass project.

You can make anything from a bead to an ornament, a glass flower, a glass snowman, a pendant, a nightlight, a suncatcher, and even a drinking glass.

I made a glass flower which took about 20 minutes total. Note that if you don’t plan on returning to the museum the next day you’ll need to have your project shipped to you.

Group classes are welcome. If you are quite serious and are staying longer, there are one-day classes, weekend classes, one-week, two-week and even 10-week sessions that are once a week. There are classes on glassblowing, flameworking, kiln working, cold working, mold making and mosaic.

The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum has various exhibits regarding Seneca history and culture. There are formal tours that you can join or if you prefer to explore the museum on your own, you can do that as well.

Museum Interpreters are available for any questions you may have about the different exhibits. There are objects on display, photographs, records, artworks and other exhibits that showcase the culture.

Some of the exhibits include sports that Native Americans play including Lacrosse and Snowsnake. There are exhibits of homes that they used to live in like the Long Houses and Log Cabin Room.

There are partially reconstructed long houses and the exhibit will show you where one would sleep, what men and women do in their communities and other information.

Around mid-1700s many already lived in log cabins that are a lot like the ones in British military or American settlers in New York colonies.

There is a permanent exhibit that gives information about the creation of the Kinzua Dam in the 1960s that destroyed Native American communities.

You will see how the people lost their homes and lifestyle; how the Seneca Nation of Indians fought for their homes; and how their loss has affected them.

The Central Gallery features birds and animals including the 8 animals and birds that represent the different clans.

Seneca Iroquois National Museum Collections

If you are a researcher or an artist who works on Seneca-Iroquois topics, this will be your research and art paradise. There are more than 1 million objects in the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum collection.

There are documents, photographs, publications, multi-media productions and other materials related to the Seneca history and culture.

Even if you’re not a researcher or artist, you will also find interesting objects among the collections. There are corn husks dolls, beadwork purses, pottery, antler bone carving and many more.

Seneca Iroquois National Museum Education Tours and Programs

There is a new classroom in the Cultural Center where students in educational tours can ask questions from Cultural Experts. The tours can be catered to different topics that the group may require or prefer.

To make things interesting, there are games, crafts, storytelling and even artifacts that students can touch.

Pulling up to the door a sharply dressed doorman opens my door and welcomes me to the Hotel Elysee. Asking if I need help with luggage I decline (I’m traveling light with only a backpack) and make my way into the elegant lobby.

There is no wait to check in and I find the front desk staff is excited to share details about the hotel. Everything from evening wine service to breakfast and, best of all, an upgrade to a Grand King Suite.

Walking through the stunning lobby I pass classic European art and period pieces which give the hotel a very glamorous feel.

Making my way under chandeliers and past silk furbished walls I arrive at my room. Stepping inside I’m delighted to find that the term Grand King Suite does not disappoint.

There are 700 square feet of pure luxury including a sitting area, kitchenette, separate bedroom, and bathroom.

This is exactly how one should stay when they visit New York City. I love that there is so much room to move about without feeling claustrophobic

After settling in I make my way to the wine and cheese reception that happens each evening. I’m greeted at the clubroom with an offer of wine.

After selecting an assortment of snacks I take my wine and find a great place to view the room.

 It is full of guests quietly conversing amongst themselves. The atmosphere is relaxing and I could sit here quietly reading a book from one of the many available, but Broadway is calling and I must make my leave.

I’m only one night at the Hotel Elysee so I make the best of it by giving myself permission to sleep in. After having a bit of a restful morning I force my way through my morning routine and back down to the club room to enjoy a continental breakfast.

Coffee is a must to fully get my day going and the Hotel Elysee coffee definitely rates high in my book.

Thankfully there is a 1p.m. checkout so I don’t have to rush to leave the hotel. Eventually, I say my goodbyes knowing that the Hotel Elysee stay will definitely remain a very fond memory of my trip to NYC.

Please welcome Kim Schneider to the blog. We recently stayed at the Library Hotel in NYC. She is sharing that experience with us today.

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library,” said author Jorge Luis Borges. And to check the theory, picture rooms with shelves neatly stacked floor to ceiling with books—thousands of books.

There’d be reading nooks with cushy leather sofas, sun streaming through abundant windows, a blazing fire and coffee—well, wine—close at hand.

Even bedrooms would be themed around books, down to the art on the walls and perhaps a teddy bear reading a fairy tale on the bed.

And if you didn’t even think to envision being handed advance reader copies of the best new fiction and non-fiction releases upon check-in, be happy the staff at the Library Hotel in midtown Manhattan did.

The hotel is all those things and more—a literal heaven for book lovers from the private club-style brick archway entrance to a check-in at a desk backed by a card catalog wall.

Come evening, cocktails like a Tequila Mockingbird and a “Pulitzer” are served by an outdoor poetry patio overlooking the New York Public Library.

Even the rooms on each of the 10 floors are themed, and around the general categories (social sciences, languages, math and science, literature, philosophy and more) of the Dewey Decimal System.

Book 10th floor room 1000.05 (Journalism), and you just may find the “Elements of Style” amid other related books and themed artwork.

Nancy Drew books are likely to reside on the shelves of 800.006 (Mysteries), and those with specialty interests say of dinosaurs (500.005), the paranormal (1100.005) or money (300.005) will find a room theme to fit them—and the particular theme—to perfection.

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, after all, curated the “Love” room, Vera Wang the “fashion design” room. Neil Armstrong, a long-time regular, didn’t pick its décor but was said to prefer the astronomy or biography rooms, and (random fact), before it was even a hotel, the site housed the offices of Theodore Roosevelt.

The sense of a library that even Roosevelt might have once frequented is infused throughout, maybe partly because all of the 6,000 books stocked throughout rooms and nooks are all hardcover and because glassed-in sunrooms, terraces, and windows overlook historic nearby buildings.

Those who don’t want to leave really don’t need to. Breakfast is complementary, cappucino and lattes, fruit and scones offered free all day in sunrooms and nooks.

If you can make yourself leave, the hotel is well positioned for exploring the best of New York City and even for a literary-themed adventure.

Just out the door, along East 41st Street between Park and Fifth avenues, you’ll find “Library Way,” and its walk, a series of bronze plaques celebrating famed literary quotes.

Ponder quotes from authors like Thomas Jefferson “Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe” until you reach the famed lions Patience and Fortitude at the library entrance.

Take a one-hour free tour (11 a.m. And 2 p.m. Monday-Sat, 2 p.m. Sunday) and learn the stories behind the murals that resemble the sky, the football field-sized reading room and even the stuffed animals (stored within) that inspired the actual Winnie the Pooh series.

Then head back, grab a book from the shelf and settle in. As the decorative pillow in each room attests, “Book lovers never go to bed alone.”
