Flown in fresh daily the bagels are served up plain, toasted, with or without cream cheese, or even made into a delightful bagel breakfast sandwiches.

There are usually a dozen or more different flavored bagels to pick from and about that many cream cheese choices. The daily bagel choices are listed near the front window so you can see at a glance what’s available. There are also a few breakfast bagel options and, of course, they are very accommodating with requests.

I’ve had the breakfast bagel sandwich a couple times, usually on an everything bagel with bacon, egg, and flavored or plain cream cheese, depending on my mood.

However, they do offer seasonal cream cheeses and I’ve heard that the pumpkin cream cheese is absolutely divine. I need to get back to Wytheville in the fall to experience that.

It’s important to note that Ghetti’s also offers a number of pastries that are made in house and delicious. I’d recommend having a bagel for breakfast and grabbing a pastry for later.

Of course, you have to have coffee with your bagel, and luckily Ghetti’s serves up some of the best with Blackline Coffee. For the hard core coffee drinkers there is 0 Dark 30 coffee which will wake you right up. I prefer Sunday Morning which is a little more tame, but still delicious.

50th Anniversary of the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia 

A momentous occasion awaits in 2024 as Virginia commemorates the 50th anniversary of the historic Carter Family Fold, a musical performance and concert venue located in Hiltons, Virginia dedicated to the preservation and performance of old-time country and bluegrass music and named in honor of the original Carter Family. A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter are among the earliest recording artists in country music and the trio is considered the “First Family of Country Music.” 

Beginning March 23, the Carter Family Fold will host weekly Saturday night concerts featuring some of the best regional country and bluegrass artists leading up to a special “Appalachia Rising” concert on April 27 and a big 50th Anniversary musical event on August 3. 

10th Anniversary of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol, Virginia

10 years ago, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum opened its doors in Bristol, Virginia to showcase the beginnings and evolution of country music and its roots in the Southwest Virginia area. This Smithsonian-affiliated facility showcases the historic 1927 Bristol Sessions, which saw the creation of some of the earliest country music recordings in America when the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers and several other musicians recorded for the first time before gaining prominence.  

The museum will be hosting live music events throughout the year, including the multi-day Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion music festival, which brings together renowned artists from various genres. This year’s festival takes place September 13-15, 2024. 

40th Anniversary of the Floyd Country Store’s Friday Night Jamboree in Floyd, Virginia

In the heart of Floyd, Virginia, the Floyd Country Store commemorates the 40th anniversary of its Friday Night Jamboree. Outdoor Attractions and Parks to Experience in Wytheville

With its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it should be no surprise that outdoor activities, from sight-seeing to fly fishing to mountain biking, are popular here.

A short drive from downtown, Big Walker Lookout is an attraction known for its outstanding views and authentic local charm. The family-owned-and-operated attraction is the oldest and highest private attraction in Virginia.

It features a country store and, at an elevation of 3,405 feet, offers a spectacular view of the Appalachian Mountains and Virginia farmlands.

Several area waterways offer some outstanding options for fly fishing. Cripple Creek, Dry Run and Venick Run are all known as outstanding trout fishing locations. The New River is another favorite for anglers.

The beautiful and unique New River Trail State Park is home to the New River Trail, one of America’s premier rails-to-trails routes. This 57-mile rails-to-trails park runs adjacent to the river and offers a host of recreational opportunities for bikers, horseback riders, canoers and kayakers as well as fishermen. Camping, bikes and canoe rentals are available on site.

Another park landmark, the Historic Shot Tower, tells the history of the surrounding lead mines and how that lead was transformed into ammunition. 

More outdoor adventure can be found at Crystal Springs Recreation Area, located just three miles from downtown Wytheville. The 1,800-acre preserve appeals to both hikers and mountain bikers with its diverse trail options. The mountain bike terrain park has more than a dozen features such as balance beams, a teeter totter and a wooden berm wall. Hiking trails offer easy half-mile options as well as the more challenging seven-mile boundary trail.

Just over the ridge from Crystal Springs is Beagle Ridge Herb Farm. This is Southwest Virginia’s premiere lavender farm, which features 14 themed display gardens and the Flying Flowers butterfly house. 

Where To Eat and Drink in Wytheville

Whether out-and-about or exploring downtown shops, visitors can find a variety of local establishments to satisfy their hunger and thirst.

Just minutes from New River Trail, West Wind Farm Vineyard and Winery is a family farm in a beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain setting. The fourth-generation farm produces and harvests grapes for its annual small batch wine collection and visitors can sample the family-crafted wines, then choose a favorite to complement a charcuterie board made with local cheeses, Virginia peanuts and gourmet pickled veggies from the tasting room shop. 

Downtown, there are plenty more options for wine, beer and more. 

Petals Wine Bar offers evening Sipping Hour specials and more. Customers can choose a bottle from the wall of wine or choose from the variety of craft beers on the menu. Speaking of the menu, gourmet grilled cheese paninis, charcuterie and cheese plates are among the options to enjoy. Check the calendar for workshops, too, pairing an evening of wine with charcuterie creation, wreath-making and more. 

7 Dogs Brew Pub is the perfect spot to enjoy snacks, burgers or sandwiches and taste the local brews.

Nearby Seven Sisters Brewery has brews of its own. Visitors can enjoy the game hall, live music and fare from a rotating food truck lineup.

Chau’s Corner Bakery has a modest storefront on the outside and a surprising and mouthwatering menu inside. Drawing on her heritage and different places she’s lived, Chau prepares authentic Vietnamese dishes as well as Cajun etouffee and Texas-style tamales and homemade baked goods.

Located in the Bolling Wilson Hotel, Graze On Main  is a favorite restaurant for locals. The menu features craft cocktails and an impressive bourbon list. The Southern inspired dinner menu includes steak, seafood and daily specials. The hotel also has Perch Rooftop Terrace, a favorite spot for enjoying cocktails at sunset.

For a dining experience like no other, a visit to The 1776 Log House Restaurant is in order. Fine dining in an 18th century atmosphere is on the menu at this locally owned treasure. An extensive menu is offered in this exceptional two-story log cabin. Christopher’s Lounge serves craft cocktails and a massive gift shop is overflowing with unique finds.

Where To Find Local Artists and World Class Art

For local art finds, there are several galleries to explore:

• Laurel Creek Pottery is a pottery studio and folk-art gallery featuring the work of artist Laura Abbey. Abbey displays a variety of other artists’ work and hosts demonstrations and hands-on workshops.
• Formato Fine Arts, where owner Lily Formato can often be seen painting in the front windows on Main Street, features exhibits of emerging and established local artists’ work.
• At the Rose Cottage School of Art visitors are invited to connect with their artistic spirit and make unique creations of their own. The school hosts fine art and music classes, paint nights and a slate of creative workshops and camps. Rose Cottage also hosts a variety of visiting artisans’ workshops throughout the year.

For performing arts lovers, Wytheville’s Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre is a must-see experience. The 200-seat, German-themed venue is known for its year-round offerings of Broadway caliber, “all musicals, all the time” entertainment. A four-course, themed, plated meal is served before each performance. 

Visitors will also want to check out the show schedule at downtown’s historic Millwald Theatre.  Built in 1928, the theatre originally boasted Vaudeville and “moving pictures” programming and has been revived as a multipurpose entertainment and education venue.

Ghetti’s Cafe

Get your NY Bagel fix at Ghetti’s. Offering up a variety of bagels from plain to savory and sweet. Additionally, there are a number of flavored cream cheeses on the menu. They serve BlackLine Coffee, which is so good.

This is a great place to grab a quick breakfast to go before heading out to climb the Big Walker Lookout tower.

Grayson Restaurant

This locally owned and operated restaurant offers up home-cooked southern-style meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner as well as great service. The diner totally gives off the vibe of being right at home. And as a great bonus, breakfast is served all day. 

Crossroads Social House

This is a full entertainment complex that not only has great food and drinks, but is also a great spot to burn off some excess energy and have so much fun. This is a great place to kick back, have some great food and bowl and play billiards and darts. There’s also a really nice arcade room to let the kid in you have some fun. 

If you’re in town during a big game, they have two areas complete with large tv’s and comfy seating for small groups you can reserve. Open 7 days a week, Crossroads also features a full-service restaurant and bar with a seasonal outdoor patio area.

Log House 1776 Restaurant

The vibe of the Log House 1776 restaurant is hard to describe with its maze of dining rooms, nooks, crannies, gift shops and resident bunnies and doves. It is one of the oldest remaining structures in Wytheville with portions of the building dating to 1776, its eclectic charm and delicious food make it a must for anyone visiting the area.   

This is easily one of my favorite places to dine when I’m in Wytheville. Be sure the visit the gift shops and gardens before or after dinner.

Skeeter’s World Famous Hot Dogs

Skip the fast food chains and head over to Skeeters Hot Dogs in downtown Wytheville on Main Street. Established in 1925 and considered World Famous, this is one of Virginia’s oldest continuously operating restaurants. 

When you step into Skeeter’s it is a bit like taking a step back in time. To your right is a vintage lunch counter counter that faces the grill and to the left a scattering of tables which are almost always full. This joint is hoppin’ from open to close serving up red dogs, house-made hot dog chili, and coleslaw.

High Plains Barbecue

Specializing in slow-smoked meats and homemade sides, this laid back establishment is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy authentic Southern-style BBQ.

If you’re in Wytheville on a Saturday head over for lunch and grab their brisket burnt ends. Remember, like most great BBQ places once they sell out they sell out so I recommend getting there when they open so you’re not disappointed.

Peking Chinese Restaurant

I love finding a good Chinese restaurant and Peking does not disappoint. Peking has plentiful seating for everyone which is good because this a favorite spot for locals and travelers alike .

This ornately decorated building is adorned with red lanterns & dark woods which gives off a warm vibe. You’ll be warmly greeted by a hostess when you step inside and, with any luck, you’ll be seated at one of the comfortable red leather booths that line the wall. There is a great menu the offers up familiar fare.

Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre

In a town of less than 10,000 you don’t often find a dinner theater, but Wytheville likes keeping things unique and the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre does not disappoint. This family owned and operated German-themed dinner theatre is an all-encompassing entertainment venue producing musicals, plays, concerts, and other special events.

You’ll enjoy a three-course meal cooked and plated in our kitchen and served at the table by a dedicated waitstaff. After dinner the show begins. The dinner theatre has a rotating schedule of shows. I’m kind of hoping I can get back for the production of If I Could Turn Back Time, a tribute to the 80s. Yes, please!!!

Graze on Main

Located in the historic Bolling Wilson Hotel, Graze on Main. They are serving up some of the best food with southern twist on some favorites; like pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, and finely prepared steak, daily seafood specials, chicken and salmon.

Offering a casual but elegant dining environment, the décor features wood floors, luxurious fabrics, comfortable seating, unique art, and lighting. You can choose to dine indoors or enjoy the outdoor seating area. If you don’t have time time for dinner be sure to at least grab one of the specialty cocktails at the fabulous bar OR head up to the Perch Rooftop bar to enjoy a cocktail with a view.

Almost everyone traveling from the Midwest to the beaches of the southeast coast will pass through here, but many fail to stop and explore this amazing destination.

I’ve visited Wytheville a couple times now and I keep wanting to go back! There is so much to explore, and the mountain views are incredibly gorgeous.

I’ve put together a list of ten things to do when you visit whether its for a day, a weekend, or a week. After you get a taste of this unique mountain town you’ll want to visit again and again.

17 Absolute MUST Things You Have To Do In Wytheville in Southwest Virginia + Where to Stay

1. Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum

As one of only eight historic sites across the country dedicated to the interpretation of a First Lady, the museum tells the story of Wytheville native Edith Bolling Wilson.

She was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson, and played a pivotal role in the White House at an important moment during World War I.

What you might miss reading on museum placards and why it’s so important to have a docent give the tour is that Edith Bolling Wilson was a badass! 

Widowed fairly young, she took over her husband’s jewelry business and ran it very successfully.

Then, one day, after having tea with the President (arranged through mutual friends), the widowed Ms. Bolling started dating President Wilson. I’m assuming she took some heat for that (cause y’all know people put her on blast even back then).

She was the first female in the DC area to own and operate an electric car and, my favorite fact about her, she drank bourbon daily.

Oh, and she refused the President’s first marriage proposal. I do love stories of independent women. And in some utter cuteness, #relationshipgoals news, while the President was courting her he wrote her daily love letters and sent frequently sent her orchids, her favorite flower. #RelationshipGoals

There’s also some that claim her as America’s first acting female President. It’s believed that she took over many of the behind the scenes tasks to make sure her ailing husband remained stress-free. 

I mean, she’s kind of my new hero and I learned so much about her. A must-visit when you are in Wytheville and is worth an hour of your time.

2. Crossroads Social House

Wytheville’s newest attraction, Crossroads Social House is a family entertainment center with 14 lanes for bowling, a laser tag arena, multiple party rooms, an arcade, a billiards and darts area and a trampoline jump zone.

This is a great place to kick back, have some great food and bowl and play billiards and darts. There’s also a really nice arcade room to let the kid in you have some fun. 

If you’re in town during a big game, they have two areas complete with large tv’s and comfy seating for small groups you can reserve.

Open 7 days a week, Crossroads also features a full-service restaurant and bar with a seasonal outdoor patio area.

3. Thomas J. Boyd Museum 

Honoring Thomas Jefferson Boyd, the “Father of Wytheville,” the Boyd Museum focuses on local history, including local craftsmen, abundant natural resources and the area’s1950 polio epidemic, called the “Summer Without Children.”

There are a couple really interesting, in my opinion, exhibits you’ll want to stop in and see. The first is the above mentioned “Summer Without Children.” It tells the story of the polio epidemic, and the lengths locals went to to ensure the safety of the community.

A story shared with me and one that just intrigues me so much is that of a mom who filled a room in her house, known today as Rock Hall, with sand so the kids could play without being outside It’s said that the family didn’t leave the house for a very extended period and all survived the pandemic.

I have so many questions–where does one find enough sand to fill a room, was she sweeping up sand every day, all day long, did the sand have to be replenished/replaced, how much sand does it actually take to fill a room. I could go on and on. That being said, I love the ingenuity of a mom finding a way to stay sane during a crazy time.

Another exhibit that’s really cool is the indoor beehive. As an avid gardener and wannabe beekeeper, I thought this was fascinating.

And maybe my favorite badass female story from the museum is that of Molly Tynes who we’ve never heard of because, if I had to guess, she’s female. But she’s basically the female version of  Paul Revere.

She rode forty-four miles, on horseback, at night, over four mountains, telling everyone along the way “The Yankees are coming in the morning,” and basically saved the town, railroad, and mines.

Wytheville is full of badass women stories…I love it here!

4. Historic Millwald Theatre 

This 1928 theatre had fallen into some serious disrepair and hadn’t operated as a full-time theater for many years. All that changed when they reopened the fully renovated theater in 2022

The theatre is bringing arts and culture events to the 515-seat auditorium with both live and filmed events. 

From comedians to concerts to classic films and so much more. Definitely try to grab a show while you’re in town.

5. Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre 

In a town of less than 10,000 you don’t often find a dinner theater, but Wytheville likes keeping things unique and the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre does not disappoint.

All the theatre productions are musicals and I’m here for it. The minute I catch wind they are doing a production of Mama Mia I’m buying the tickets and making the drive.

Our four-course meal was served and enjoyed while we relaxed in the comfort of the theatre. Plates were cleared right before the production began.

I’ve been able to see “The Sound of Music” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and loved both.

6. West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard

After a fun packed day take some time to unwind at West Wind Winery Farm & Vineyard.

With award-winning wines, this beautiful fourth-generation family homestead is welcoming and encourages guests to stay away and enjoy a glass or two of wine and the ambiance. 

Absolutely try the Galena Creek Peach wine. It’s the perfect refreshing drink on a hot summer day.

There were also a number of red wines I enjoyed and if I hadn’t flown, I would have taken a number of bottles home with me.

Instead, I just brought home the Galena Creek Peach for a girlfriend’s brunch event.

7. 1870 Octagon Mansion History Museum/Gallery

This right here was another surprising find for me. The construction for this unique building started way back in 1866 by a doctor and was then sold to a minister before completion in 1874.

Side wings were then added to the house in the 1890s by the next owner and is how you’ll see the layout of the house today.

On display is a private life-time collection of John Cushman who started collecting when he was just 5 years old.

The displays are mostly Civil War memorabilia, but there are a few other world conflicts represented.

The different rooms in the mansion each house a specific collection with the most interesting the uniform room. 

While the historical items in the home are interesting and worth the stop it’s the hauntings of the building that seriously caught my attention.

It’s believed that numerous spirits call this mansion home, and you’ll find paranormal investigators in the building almost every weekend. I was able to join a group and I’ll have a story on that soon!

Additionally, the owners, John and Debbie, host “Dinner with a Ghost” events in the mansion dining room. The room is resplendent with decor and table settings complete with a royal table set just for the ghosts.

8. Big Walker Lookout 

It’s a twisty and curvy drive to the top of the mountain and Big Walker Lookout but it’s completely worth it.

The views are incredible from the parking lot, but from the top of the tower they are jaw-dropping stunning.

You used to be able to see five states from the top of the tower and still happens on occasion, but you can definitely see  Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

If it’s an absolute pristine clear day you might be able to see Kentucky and Tennessee as well.

If you visit on a weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy the musical stylings of regional musicians and browse artisans booths. You’ll find artists and musicians there every weekend from May to October.

Absolutely do not leave without getting an ice cream cone.

9. Fort Chiswell Animal Park 

What is one to do when they have a love for animals and want to share that joy with others? Well, they open a park, of course. This interactive animal park is home to animals from six continents, most of who freely roam the abundant 45-acre parcel of land. 

A safari bus slowly moves guests around the property, so they have a chance to see the animals up close and feed them if they’d like.

This is a great opportunity to see animals that you wouldn’t see in the wild in America. I’m not sure I’ll ever make it to Africa to see some of these animals so seeing them here is incredible. 

This is a great family outing. I was on the bus with two families and the young kids were simply thrilled to see, feed, and in some cases, touch these animals.

10. Beagle Ridge Herb Farm 

Love lavender? This is the place for you. Although Beagle Ridge is so much more than just lavender its definitely the star of the show. The lavender gardens are gorgeous and a life goal. 

Beyond the lavender there are a number of display gardens to walk through. Seriously, if my gardens looked half as good as these I’d be thrilled. 

If you want to learn more about growing lavender or even starting a lavender farm this is the place to learn. The farm offers Lavender Academy and teaches everything from growing to selling.

There is no gatekeeping of information, and you’ll walk away with all the knowledge you need to be successful.

11. Bike New River Trail State Park

The New River Trail State Park is a 57.7-mile rail trail and state park, extending from the trail’s northeastern terminus in Pulaski to its southern terminus in Galax.

Stop by the New River State Park campground store in Max Meadows and rent a bike to explore part or all of the New River Trail.

The trail is an easy, scenic pedal along the river.

If you brought your own bike there are a number of places to get on the trail. There is a great online trail map to help you pick part of the trail to explore.

12. Shot Tower

This is a fun piece of history to visit. Located a mile from the New River State Park campground along the trail (an easy 1 mile bike ride) or accessible by car.

“Overlooking the New River, Shot Tower was built more than 200 years ago to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. Guests may ascend the tower, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.”- https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/shot-tower

The shot tower is open every weekend and generally has a docent on site to share the history of the tower.

Try to visit when there is a docent onsite because you will learn so much about the history of the shot tower.

The construction alone is impressive, but whoever figured out how to make ammunition this way is genius.

Admission to the tower is free, however the daily parking fee applies.

13. Wytheville’s Smallest Church

This is a fun roadside attraction stop!

Located alongside I-81/77, it’s located on a service road, but is easy to visit. Most map apps will get you there easy enough.

The 12×16-foot chapel was built by volunteers in 2010.

14. Find the “LOVE” in Wytheville

Virginia is famous for their “LOVE” and Wytheville does not disappoint with three “LOVE” signs. 

The LOVE sign at Big Walker Lookout is one of my faves with its bigfoot cutout and those views!!!

15. Chautauqua Festival

Held in June complete with a Hot Air Balloon “glow”, artisan show, festival foods and so much more. w festival.

16. Vintage Baseball Games

Each summer you’ll find community members gather, some to play and some to watch, as vintage baseball is played locally and, in a few cases, in neighboring communities.

It’s interesting to see how baseball started compared to where it is today.

17. Wytheville Farmers Market

Absolutely go to the market! 

Open year round you can grab breakfast, pick up homemade breads, bakery items, jams, salsas and so much more.

Fresh vegetables and fruit vary throughout the growing season. 

TWO UNIQUE PLACES TO STAY IN WYTHEVILLE

Bolling Wilson Hotel

I loved returning to my room each night and climbing into the most comfortable hotel bed ever at this beautiful boutque hotel.

Inn At Foster Falls

If you prefer something a little more secluded head over to the Inn at Foster Falls.

Located within New River Trail State Park, the Inn at Foster Falls is just steps away from the 57-mile New River Trail and the New River.

The original Foster Falls Hotel opened in 1888 by the Foster Falls Mining and Manufacturing Company. While the mining company was in business it served as a post office, store, meeting hall and boarding house.

After the mining company sold the building it was opened as an industrial school for women and eventually the building served as an orphanage until the early 60’s.

Eventually the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation took ownership of the building and began renovations in 2013.

Almost a decade later the building opened as the Inn at Foster Falls.

This 10 room boutique hotel is absolutely delightful. The rooms are simply beautiful and cozy.

Long porches overlook the country side and top notch amenities make this must stay.

Alan made it all the way to the top, I wimped out about 3/4 of the way up, but I did walk across the swinging bridge. Small wins.

The Big Walker Country Store is a craft haven, featuring the work of more than 25 artisans from the region. Stop in and grab a scoop of ice cream and enjoy it on the outdoor deck overlooking the valley below.

Homemade Zoo

When a local carpenter fulfilled his dream of having a zoo, the Fort Chiswell Animal Park was born. From mobile petting zoo to full-blown safari park, the attraction now offers an interactive experience amid a 45-acre setting.

The largest zoo in Southwest Virginia, it is home to more than 200 animals from six continents, including camels, zebra, antelope, and buffalo.

Lavender Academy

Beagle Ridge Herb Farm is Southwest Virgnia’s premiere lavender farm. The farm features 14 themed display gardens as well as the Flying Flowers butterfly house to showcase its herb and perennial collections.

Whatever you call it, the New River Trail is beautiful any time of the year! It is nearly 58 miles long and is one of America’s premier rails-to-trails routes. Foster Falls is located about midway along the trail and is a popular starting point.

Another great trail is located at Crystal Spring Recreational Area. Our 2 mile hike took us about 2 1/2 hours, but we tend to stroll and take our time enjoying the great outdoors.

Snow was lightly falling and for the hundredth time I questioned our sanity for camping in winter-like conditions.

Stony Fork Federal Forest campground is located just a few miles off I-77 and north of Wytheville about 8 miles. It sits in the shadow of Big Walker mountain in a heavily forested area complete with trout creeks.

The one-way paved road crosses Stony Creek numerous times and one area even includes a Flood Warning sign that had me grateful we were experiencing snow and not rain.

Our goal was to find a site that was sheltered from the wind and had a flat, preferably grassy, surface for our tent.  About 3/4 of the way around the loop and near the bathrooms (my requirement) we found the perfect location. 

As we drove through the park we noticed 3 RV campers and the park hosts. The campground had just opened that day and it looked like not many were tempting the cold temps in a tent or an RV.

This was the first camping adventure of the year and we had a load of new camping equipment to test out including a new Coleman tent, cots (we’d always used air mattress in the past), sleeping pads, and a Mr. Heater to keep the chill out of the tent.

Did I mention snow was falling as we arrive and temps were set to dip into the single digits overnight? Plus, the wind was fierce and topping at gusts of 40mph. That kind of cold wind cuts right through you.

Thank goodness we are not strangers to cold weather.

I had no idea that a federal forest campground could be so nice. We’re used to pit toilets and a single source for potable water, also known as drinking water, that the entire campground shares. 

Side note, I have no idea why campgrounds list it as potable water instead of drinking water but now you know that it’s safe to use.

The campground has three types of sites: rustic, electric only, electric and water. We were after an electric site ($26/night) because it’s nice to be able to plug in our gadgets.

We are still considering buying a Jackery Power Station, but those come with a hefty price tag and we’re just not willing to splurge a $1,000 on one yet. Honestly, I’m not sure we ever will. 

In addition to the three types of sites this is the first federal forest I’ve camped at that had flush toilets and free showers! Oh, plus that bathrooms are heated. Totally worth every penny of the nightly fee. 

After finding the perfect site,  we started the task of pitching a brand new tent.

It is marketed as a quick set up tent and honestly only took a few minutes to get the tent set up.

Adding the rainfly and staking down the tent took a bit more time.

We also added an extra tarp to the “porch” area of the tent to cut down some of the wind.

Eventually, we had the tent, cots, sleeping pads, blankets, and heater (Mr. Buddy for the win) all tucked in. 

The Buddy Heater was LIFE. We brought a 20 pound propane tank with us which we kept on the tent porch and strung the hose through the tent opening.

In addition to the safety measures built into the heater we also brought a carbon monoxide detector. I’m paranoid about things like that.

Next up, finding enough dry wood to get a fire going. We were surprised that we didn’t pass any “firewood for sale” along our drive in.

In northern Michigan about every other house sells firewood on the way to campgrounds. In Virginia, nothing. Luckily, we were able to use fallen wood and found enough that was dry.

After a dinner of a backpacking meal, which wasn’t too bad, we decided to get in the tent and try to warm up.

Listening to the wind howl through the trees I prayed nothing would fall on us overnight and snuggled deep under my blankets and fell asleep.

After surviving the cold night we decided to add a 3rd night onto our adventure.

Yes, it was that much fun and I’m so glad we went through with our cold weather tent camping adventure.

During our visit to the area we were able to take a nice hike at Crystal Springs Recreation Area, check out nearby Hungry Mother State Park, which is interesting in that it hugs a lakeshore along one entire side, and simply enjoy our time relaxing in nature.

We absolutely loved the campground, the quiet and peacefulness of it and it’s proximity to town and Big Walker Lookout. 

Alan made it to the top of the lookout. I, however, wimped out about 3/4th of the way up. My fear of heights won again, but I’m getting closer to conquering it.

A Few Cold Weather Camping Tips

1. Pack warm clothes, including outer gear. Socks and a hat will be your best night time sleeping friend.
2. If possible, bring a heater and a carbon monoxide detector.
3. Plan accordingly. We packed extra blankets and an extra electric heater. I wasn’t taking any chances.
4. Pack some whisky 😉
5. Have fun. Yes, it was cold, but we also had a great time! 

Stony Fork Campground Tips

1. The campground does accept reservations. Try to make one well in advance of your visit. 
2. The bathrooms were clean at the start of the season. I have no idea what it will look like mid-season. I’d pack extra toilet paper just in case. 
3. Take a hike on the campground hiking trail.
4. Pack a fishing pole and dunk a worm. Don’t forget to buy a Virginia fishing license. 
5. Find firewood well in advance of your arrival. Maybe during the season wood will be available for sale at the campground, but plan accordingly.
6. Leave no trace! Clean up after yourself and leave the campsite free of any garbage. There is a dumpster on the way out of the park to dispose of any waste.

Once there find your way to the Octagon Mansion and experience everything from history to hauntings!

Seriously, this was such a surprising and unexpected discovery. Honestly, if this hadn’t been on my press trip schedule I probably wouldn’t have take the time to visit, but, WOW, I’m so very glad I did.

We were slated for a guided historical tour (self-guided is an option as well) that turned into an experience unlike no other.

The owners (you’ll meet them a bit later) are incredible storytellers and the Octagon Mansion and History Museum is definitely a passion project for them.

However, this story really took a turn for me during the tour when I noticed a number of pieces of ghost hunting equipment set up around the house.

Of course, my paranormal loving brain wanted to know exactly what was going on and why the equipment was set out. 

Apparently, the Octagon Mansion is reportedly haunted and most weekends there are paranormal groups in to investigate. Y’all know I’m 100% here for that!!

Because I have no shame, I instantly asked if I might join the investigation that night (<<–100% a job perk).

Luckily, the paranormal investigating group was accommodating and more than happy to have me join them for an investigation.

What was an already great experience at the museum was just getting better and better.

I was beyond thrilled that they said yes! More on them in a little bit.

Before we get into the hauntings I think it’s helpful to have a little history of the house, it’s current owners and what’s happening here now.

A Very Brief History of the Octagon Mansion–if you don’t care about history, (no shade, just sayin’), scroll on down to the ghost stuff 😉

The construction on the house began in 1870 by a Dr. Henry Quincy Adams Boyer (I know, that’s a lot of names…). Anyways, our good doctor started the house and then decided to move a bit further south (next county over) to start a hospital. He sold the home in 1874, before it was completed, to a Rev. Dexter A. Snow.

Rev. Snow remained in the home until the 1890s (and is maybe still there today…..stay tuned) when he sold it to a Mr. James Gleaves. It was Mr. Gleaves that had the side wings added.

Side Note: So, as always, I have questions. The biggest one being how in the world a reverend could afford a mansion back in the late 1800’s. His father was a reverend as well so I don’t think he had a lot of money.  I didn’t do the research to see if  his wife came from money or if the church paid for it. However, the church was built AFTER purchasing the house. Times were different then so maybe the house was really affordable. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter, but just something to thing about.

It remained a private residence through the decades up until the early 1990s where it went through a number of commercial business and then sat mostly empty from 2012 until recently.

Enter the current owners and rescuers of the mansion,  Debbie and John Cushman.

What Is the Octagon Mansion Architecture?

I know very little about architecture so I’m sharing what I found in a history book about the building.

The general overall structure (not including the additions/changes)  is that of an octagon mode 2-story brick house with a semi-circular portico supported by Doric columns.

My interpretation..it’s just a cool freaking building and you’re going to want to go inside and see it up close and personal.

After visiting the Octagon Mansion there are 13 more things you absolutely must see before leaving town.

What Is The Octagon Mansion Today?

Today, the Octagon Mansion is owned by John and Debbie Cushman. John has spent a lifetime curating memorabilia and when he met Debbie he moved an entire semi-trailer load of artifacts to Wytheville and the Octagon Mansion History Museum was born.

From Debbie: 

John’s lifetime collection of American history began at age 5.

He was a re-enacter at Gettysburg for 25 years and amassed this collection during that time. It has always been his dream to preserve history, display and share his collection with the public. In doing so, he is also restoring and preserving the Octagon Mansion…..

Hence, The 1870 Octagon Mansion History Museum was born.

After two years of hard work, The museum opened on Memorial Day, May 2021.

The museum is open for public tours on Fridays and Saturdays 12-4pm and private tours by appointment only on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

I’m not sure if Debbie knew what she was getting into when John said he collects military memorabilia, but it appears that she has taken it all in stride and together they have created an incredible place to share their love of history with people.

I greatly appreciate that his private collection is available for others to see. So many times these items get locked away in storage units, but the Cushman’s have graciously, and to great expense to themselves, provided a public home for the items to live.

The majority of the collection may be Civil War history, but there are any number of military conflicts represented. 

Thousands of items adorn the walls, display cases, bookshelves and more. I think there is more to go on display but there simply isn’t room at this time. 

Walking through the house I’m simply stunned by the collection. There is everything from Civil War uniforms, drums, and guns to documents, art work and antiques.

If you are a civil war buff plan on spending some time here because it’s going to take a while to see it all.

Most of the collection is categorized by subject matter. There is a uniform room, a Grand Hall with some very cool maps of the Battle of Gettysburg, a front parlor, a dining room where you can have Dinner With A Ghost and so much more.

The mansion is still undergoing restoration and the owners are slowly but lovingly restoring the building to its original grandeur.

Investigating the Hauntings at the Octagon Mansion

Here’s the part I know a lot of you have been waiting for….

I arrived back at the Octagon Mansion at the appointed 9p.m. start time and was warmly met by members of the Tri-State Paranormal Research Team with their sister group Mid Ohio Valley Ghost Hunters. 

Four members, Amy, William, Michelle, and Valerie, were able to make this trip a couple hours away from their home base for the weekend. 

They were about to take me on a very adventurous night at the museum. I mean, who doesn’t want to be in a museum at night, the artifacts may not have come to life, but there was definitely paranormal activity happening while I was there.

We spent a solid hour talking about their experiences and how long they’ve been investigating. For the record, a long time, 20+ years with 150+ investigation so I’d have to say they know what they’re doing.

The Investigation Begins…

After chatting we decided to move to the front parlor where they capture a lot of activity. They do not provoke and always use kind words and actions while on investigations…that’s just smart investigating, in my opinion.

For the first part of the investigation I just sat quietly in the corner and watched them do their thing. Equipment was set up down the hallways and in various rooms. 

There were 5 of us total. From where I sat I could observe all of them and see/hear the equipment. William showed me how some of the equipment works and what it takes to set it off. Basically energy has to be touching the equipment, whether it’s human or spirit, it only goes off when being touched.

We weren’t in the room for 5-minutes when the rem-pods starts making noises and the motion lights start lighting up. Alrighty then, this is really happening.

The team used audio recorders in an attempt to record voices/sounds and in hopes of getting answers from the other side. 

Eventually I got into the spirit of things and started asking questions and engaging as well.

We had questions, “they” had answers, it was all very interesting, and I’m going to admit a bit shocking. I, personally, have never experienced that level of activity on an investigation before. 

Additionally, these spirits have a sense of humor and  are, without a doubt truthful and maybe lack a bit of tact.

When asked if one of the team members looked pretty in her dress the response was “not really.” We all got a really good laugh out of that one.

At another point in the evening two team members said it felt like a child was sitting on their laps. They felt a weight that was child like and they both spent some time talking with the “child.” During that experience the EMF detectors kept lighting strongly and consistently.

Upon review of the voice recorders when one of the investigators ask “If you are a girl, would you like for me to braid your hair?” As soon as she asked the question, a little girl’s voice was recorded saying “Okay”.

It was interesting watching and experiencing the interactions. I haven’t ever had that much fun on an investigation. The team members like to keep things lighthearted. It was like hanging out with friends, having a good time, paranormal aspect is a fun bonus.

Sadly, around 1a.m. I had to tap out, because I can not hang all night like I used to. 

Audio Recordings, Photos and a Hella Good Story…

A few days later I reached out to Amy to see what they may have discovered when reviewing their evidence. After my departure they had experiences that included a pull on a shirt bottom, a little pinch to the arm, more footsteps, rem-pods and EMFs going off. 

She shared some stories of the adventures they had after I left and I love the humor and fun they bring to investigations.

So that other investigator aren’t influenced by their experiences I’m not going to go into too much detail, but I’m going to share a couple things plus one of my favorite stories from Amy.

Story Time By Amy From the Tri State Paranormal Research Team: 

“Early Saturday morning around 4 am, Valerie, Michelle and myself decided we would go ahead and try to get a little sleep.

Michelle decided to carry some of her equipment down including 2 round black pucks one with “yes” wrote on it, the other with “no” that doesn’t light up but talks.

The “yes” one has different sayings for yes and the “no” button has different forms of no including a mean sounding creepy NO!

She had those gathered in her arms with a few other pieces of equipment. As we neared the stairs, all 3 of us heard a noise behind us as well as footsteps.

We stopped to listen, Michelle on one step, myself at the same top step I was on the last time when the door slammed shut in my face, and Valerie at that door not on the stairs yet.

Michelle took a step to proceed down the stairs when a creepy loud NO! was shouted.

I grabbed the railing with a death grip while simultaneously grabbing Michelle’s shoulder causing her and Valerie to jump.

It only took a few seconds until we were laughing uncontrollably because we realized it was the “no” button Michelle was carrying that went off due to pressing against her chest from carrying everything in her arms.

Someone else thought it was funny as well because we were able to hear with our own ears another voice laugh behind us. I thought for sure William, who was asleep on the couch, was going to be able to collect on my life insurance policy!”

Audio Recordings

There were a number of fantastic audio recordings, but the one I really liked is of a child’s saying “watch your hand” and at the end of the recording someone is whistling which is NOT the investigators. Whoa!

There’s numerous recording of voices and whistling, but not enough room to share all that data here. I’m really thinking there needs to be another story focused on a number of the pieces of evidence.

My Paranormal Experiences at the Octagon Mansion 

My experience at the mansion included hearing “hello Deb” through the spirit box (yikes!!).  Asking questions and getting answers via the spirit box. Hearing voice recordings on the audio recorders, and rem-pods and EMFs lighting up, at times all the things going off together. It was quite spectacular.

Is the Octagon Mansion Haunted?

In my very limited experience and knowledge I would say, without hesitation, that the Octagon House definitely has paranormal activity.

I can’t explain, by modern science, what I heard or felt, but intuitively I know that the mansion holds a lot of energy be it residual and/or intelligent or of multi-dimensions.

However, I don’t believe anything evil lurks there. 

The house is warm and inviting. If you go for an investigation keep it fun and lighthearted and you’ll most likely have your own experiences.

Just like humans want to be around fun people so do spirits. So, go, be the fun the spirits want 🙂

This is what the current owner, Debbie Cushman, shared with me: 

We host paranormal teams from all across the nation most every weekend.

Although many teams have encountered multiple spirits, nothing evil, we believe two resident spirits are the most prominent… the Reverend and Audrey, a young girl we believe to be around 12 yrs old.

This home had never been investigated until John sat down with the previous owners for an investigation.

With typical ghost hunting equipment, within minutes they were approached by this little girl who only asked one question….. “Have you seen my mommy?”

Since then, many teams have also encountered her and that’s how we learned he name… Audrey.

On occasion, she still asks different teams that same question, have you seen my mommy?

Both the Rev and Audrey interact with investigators not to mention other spirits.

Random objects move about the mansion, such as a dinner plate being in Audrey’s room unexplainably, a doll in a different place when left in a room.

Things broken when we return to the mansion when no one had been there.

Who Haunts the Octagon Mansion?

Well, as always, questions like this are up for debate and it comes down to investigators doing their best to assess what is happening and how that correlates to the history of the house. 

The owners are almost positive Rev. Snow decided to stick around as well as a child that they believe is named Audrey (more on the below).

It is also probable that a number of spirits/energy could be attached to the items in the house and we’ll never know who they are.

It’s also been suggested that the mansion is just a place that spirits like to visit. 

I don’t think we’ll ever really know for certain and my opinion on hauntings waver between us being ghosts in someone else’s story and/or a moment in space and time where multiple dimensions overlap and interact and/or strictly what is the accepted definition of a haunting by today’s standards–the energy of a deceased individual that hasn’t crossed over. 

It’s all open for debate and the great thing is there is no wrong answer.

You’re Invited To Dinner With A Ghost at the Octagon Mansion

Dinner With A Ghost Was created in 2007 by John in Goldfield, Nevada aa a way to raise funding for restoration and preservation in the old mining town.

He took his background of 20+ years in marketing and food distribution and combined it with his love of history and affinity of the paranormal…. And Dinner With A Ghost was born.

Mainly hosted in the west until he met, married ( the love of his life) and moved to Virginia.

Then they toured for two years across the nation hosting Dinner With A Ghost at other historic locations raising funds for their preservation.

In 2020, when the pandemic hit, they had to cancel 50 events across the nation due to the travel ban and they traveled no more which, silver lining, gave them time to get the museum completed.

And now, the Octagon Mansion is the home of  Dinner With A Ghost which blends history with a 4-course fine dining experience, and a paranormal investigation into a night of anticipation and wonderment unlike any other.

What Ghost Hunting Equipment Do I Need?

For the most part I use my senses. Hearing, sight, smell, touch, but having equipment does make the investigation a little more fun and interactive. Here are some starter items you can grab from Amazon:

• Elector Magnetic Field Detector aka EMF
• Rem-Pod
• Sprit Box
• 4k Full Spectrum Camcorder with Infrared Night Vision
• Small motion activated light up balls (like shown in the Tri State Paranormal Research Team videos on Facebook, linked above)
