Submarine Museum

Located in nearby St. Marys, the St. Marys Submarine Museum is the largest museum of its kind in the South and the fifth largest in the country. Featuring nearly 5,000 square feet of exhibits and displays on two floors, visitors will experience history come alive with a wide variety of images, paintings, artifacts, models and rare historical documents, many of which have not been made available to the public until now. Lake Allatoona

Ten minutes from Woodstock are the southeast shores of Lake Allatoona, a 12,000-acre water-sports and fishing paradise encompassing 270 miles of shoreline.

While Allatoona Lake is one of the country’s most frequently visited Army Corps of Engineers lakes (nearly seven million yearly visitors), after the summer peak boating and camping season it’s more peaceful and serene.

Hike to a hidden battlefield or climb a ridge to an 1860s ironworks with a fascinating history.

With its setting on Allatoona, Red Top Mountain State Park is a biking and hiker’s haven with its own unique recreation and programming.

More than 15 miles of trails wind through the forested park, providing opportunities for exercise and nature photography. The gravel-topped, four-mile Iron Hill Trail is open to both hikers and bikers, offering pretty views of the lake’s shoreline.

Hiking and Biking Trails

Walk or rent bicycles and ride the 20 miles of the Greenprints Trail System, a series of multi-use trails along shaded creeks in and around Woodstock.

At Olde Rope Mill Park on the Little River, take the paved and dirt trails around the cotton mill ruins, over a bridge across the river and read the historical markers highlighting the area’s history. The serious mountain bike trails at Olde Rope Mill Park are consistently rated in the top 10 trails in Georgia by Singletracks.com.

One of the most popular mountain bike trails in the U.S. is the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trail System in nearby Canton.

Red Top Mountain State Park is a biking and hiker’s haven with its own unique recreation and programming. Weekly Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, April 20 – December 28, 2024, the Woodstock Farm Fresh Market, located on Market Street in Downtown Woodstock, showcases a variety of locally grown products spanning various cultures. It’s a can’t-miss celebration of fresh food and local love.

Outdoor Music Events

From April through July, the Lantern Series takes place on the Woodstock Arts Event Green in Downtown Woodstock and features world-renowned artists. The series consists of different genres, backgrounds and ideologies. From folk to pop, from jazz to funk, there is great music to be heard!

From May through September, enjoy the Woodstock Summer Concert Series. The 2024 season is a mix of music genres. The hits you’ll hear on the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater stage this year span music eras from the 60s to today. This is a place where nature and vintage cars intermingle to create the world’s largest classic car junkyard and one of the most photogenic stops you’ll ever find.

Located a short jaunt off of I-75 and a little less than an hour north of Atlanta is this under appreciated roadside attraction that appeals to car lovers and photographers everywhere.

Pull up to the nondescript, ramshackle building and enter a colorful, nature-loving world.

Here you will find 6 miles of trails on 34 acres with 4,000+ cars. Beyond the cars, there are a plethora of oddities to be discovered.

The trails hold so much more than cars as you’ll find words of wisdom scratched onto pieces of metal and wood throughout your adventure.

Wander around the grounds and see what treasures you can discover. I only had a short amount of time to visit. I covered as much as I could but I know I missed so much more.

Old cars, trucks, buses, artwork, folk art, and so much more.

This is truly a unique attraction that you won’t want to miss.

1. Visit during cooler months to avoid stifling heat and ticks.
2. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes.
3. Make sure your camera battery is fully charged.
4. If you are a car aficionado or just love finding unique photo opportunities allocate at least 2 hours to your visit.
5. Try to get a lay of the land before wandering around as it can be a bit of a maze once you begin to wander.
6. Old Car City USA is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9a-4p.

Griffin’s architecture is another showstopper, featuring masterpieces by such greats as Neel Reed and Philip Shutze. Take one of the suggested self-guided driving tours that all start from the picturesque clock at the intersection of Hill Street & Solomon Street. One magnificent example is open for guided tours. Completed in 1862, the Greek Revival Bailey-Tebault House and was also used as a Civil War hospital and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Griffin-Spalding Historical Society owns and operates The Bailey-Tebault House where it continues its mission “to preserve and share the history of Griffin and Spalding County and to promote the preservation and use of their historic structures.” Guided tours are available by appointment at least 48 hours in advance; suggested $10 donation per person, or $25 for families, cash or card.
