I was born and raised in Cadillac and while growing up here there was not much to do. You basically had like three options, go to the movies, bowling, or do an outdoor activity like swimming, hiking, taking out a four wheeler on the trails, fishing, skiing or snowboarding. You get the gist of it and a lot of people couldn’t afford the fancy outdoor toys including my family.

I spent a lot of time outdoors, hanging out with the neighbors and riding my bike. Thinking back on it, I now realize how few activities Cadillac had compared to the places I’ve lived since. It kind of makes me sad.

After a number of years away, I moved back last year and I’m rediscovering my hometown through fresh eyes and finding that there are so many things to do now compared to a decade ago.

Camping

Cadillac offers great places to camp with a tent or camper, there are even cabin rentals on the lake!

Right between the lakes you have Mitchell State Park that offers many sites as well as some cabins. The benefit of staying at this one is you’re right between two lakes and across the street from Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center. The center offers hiking trails and numerous events throughout the year. This summer you can take a fly fishing seminar in July. Be sure to check out the other numerous activities available this summer. Another benefit of staying at the state park is the accessibility to nearby restaurants, and most importantly, coffee. Also, downtown Cadillac is just on the other side of Lake Cadillac about 10 minutes drive away.

Another campground to check out on the lake is Hemlock Campground. I haven’t stayed at Hemlock, but I’m definitely curious to try it. It looks perfect for campers that like a bit more privacy.

Outdoor Activities

One thing that hasn’t really changed, but has significantly improved is all the outdoor activities you can find in Cadillac year round. During the summer months you’ll find:

Hiking

Fishing

Boating

ATV Trails

Kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding

Disc golfing

Golfing

The Cadillac Area ATV trails are ready to welcome you with updates way signs, 2 trailhead staging areas, and more than 100 miles of mapped scenic ride miles. Don’t have an ATV? No worries, there are a number of rental facilities to help you out.

For those that love biking, you’ll want to ride the 200+ miles of multi-terrain trails. There are trails for families, fat-tire biking, and road biking.

Our personal favorite outdoor activity is kayaking with camping coming in a close second. When I want to get out on the water I tend to drop our kayaks on the Big Manistee River. Local outfitters can fit you with a kayak, canoe, and even a float tube if that is more your style.

If you’re feeling artistic, head over to Up North Arts, where you can take classes on everything from watercolor painting to ukulele strumming. Last year, my mom and I took a Nature Watercolor Journaling class, and I highly recommend it.

The Wexford Conservation District and Lake City-Missaukee County Conservation District both offer affordable classes on outdoor and gardening topics, and while most are held in the fall, winter, and spring, I encourage you to bookmark them for future visits.

Head Out To The Farm

Growing up, I had cornfields, dairy farms, as well as berry and pumpkin patches. But over the years, things have changed, and now visiting a farm is an experience in itself. Here are a few spots to check out:

Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery – Play with baby goats, attend a class, and most importantly, buy some delicious goat cheese.

Double L Farms in Cadillac and Blueberry Hill Harrietta both offer U-Pick blueberries usually starting in mid-July.

3rd Day Farm you can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

Brinks Family Creamery a family dairy farm that creates premium milk and cheese products directly from the registered Holsteins. When you stop in be sure to get some ice cream.

A Little Lavender offers a roadside stand with lavender bundles, steam distilled hydrosol, lotion bars and more.

Cotton Creek Farms is an alpaca farm where you can visit with the alpacas and buy alpaca made goods.

Of course, if you’d like a one-stop shopping experience I highly recommend visiting the Cadillac Farmers Market to find the above products and so much more.

Explore the Live Music Scene

Since moving back I’ve learned there are a number of music venues now in town. I haven’t been to all of them, but they are on my list.

The Greenhouse at the Willow In addition to live music, they also host trivia and music bingo on Wednesday nights. Watch their facebook page for other events like wine tasting, silent disco dance parties, and more.

The Venue at the Truckstop: This is one of the larger venues in town and they host some decent sized events and concerts. From cover bands to magic shows and all kinds of entertainment you’ll want to look over the upcoming shows and buy tickets now as they tend to sell out.

Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion: The UpBeat Cadillac Summer Music Series returns at the Pavilion. Starts on 06/19/2025 and runs every Thu through 08/28/2025. Begins at 7:00pm. Bring your own chair and enjoy music with an incredible backdrop.

Coyote Crossing Resort: Every Thursday night throughout the summer they offer Open Mic Night and then on Saturdays they bring in top notch performers.
Shopping and Eating

Cadillac’s charming downtown is a delightful mix of retail shops, restaurants, and coffee spots. Some of our favorites include:

Serendipity and The Bird House: Great for unique finds.

Chunky Bear Coffee: A cozy spot to sip a cup of coffee.

For when you’re feeling hungry, you can stop by Indian Spice, Clam Lake Beer Co., or Mi Mezcal Mexican for a delicious meal.

Gardening Stops You Should Visit This Summer

If you’re into gardening, Cadillac and the surrounding area are home to some great greenhouses and garden centers:

In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to see how academic success could overshadow the importance of physical activity for kids. However, the relationship between sports and academic performance is far more intertwined than one might expect. In fact, engaging in sports can significantly contribute to a child’s cognitive development, emotional health, and social skills, all of which are crucial for academic success.

Here’s how sports help kids excel academically and a look at the top sports to try:

The Cognitive Benefits of Sports

Sports don’t just help kids stay fit—they also enhance brain function, which can lead to improved academic performance. Physical activity stimulates the brain in several ways, including increasing blood flow and releasing endorphins, which are hormones that improve mood and reduce stress. These benefits help children concentrate better in class, retain information more efficiently, and manage their emotions during stressful situations such as exams or presentations.

Improved Focus and Attention

Participating in sports can help improve focus and attention in the classroom. Sports require concentration, strategy, and quick decision-making, all of which are skills that transfer well to academic tasks. Kids who play sports are often better at organizing their thoughts, solving problems, and staying on task. As they practice these skills on the field or court, they naturally carry them over to their schoolwork.

Time Management and Discipline

One of the most valuable lessons learned from sports is the importance of time management. Balancing sports practice with homework, chores, and other responsibilities teaches kids how to prioritize tasks and manage their time effectively. This discipline often extends to their academic life, where they learn to allocate time for studying, complete assignments on time, and avoid procrastination.

Stress Relief and Emotional Balance

Academic pressures can sometimes overwhelm children, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. Sports provide a healthy outlet for releasing pent-up stress and improving emotional well-being. Physical activity helps regulate emotions, boosts self-confidence, and enhances overall mental health. By learning to manage their emotions through sports, kids develop better coping mechanisms, which can help them stay calm and focused during stressful academic situations.

Social Skills and Teamwork

Many sports require teamwork, which helps kids develop important social skills like communication, leadership, and collaboration. Learning how to work as part of a team fosters empathy, problem-solving, and conflict resolution—skills that are valuable in both academic settings and life in general. These skills enhance their ability to work in groups during school projects and engage with peers and teachers in positive ways.

Boosted Self-Esteem and Motivation

Regular participation in sports can help boost a child’s self-esteem. As they improve their skills, win games, or meet personal fitness goals, their sense of achievement fosters confidence. This newfound self-assurance can have a positive impact on their academic performance, as they begin to believe in their abilities and apply that mindset to their schoolwork.

Top Sports to Try for Academic Excellence

Tennis

Tennis is an excellent sport for developing both physical and mental agility. It requires focus, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making. Children who take Chicago tennis lessons learn to anticipate their opponent’s moves, stay focused under pressure, and practice discipline—all of which are useful skills in the classroom. Tennis also provides great cardiovascular benefits, helping to boost brain power and energy levels for better concentration during school hours.

Swimming

Swimming is a low-impact sport that provides a full-body workout while improving concentration and focus. The rhythmic nature of swimming helps kids relax and clear their minds, making it an excellent way to reduce stress. St. Paul swim lessons can help children develop strong work ethics, as the sport requires rigorous practice schedules and attention to technique. These qualities help students stay disciplined and motivated in their academic studies.

Soccer

Soccer is a team sport that emphasizes communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. Kids who play soccer learn how to work together to achieve a common goal, which translates into better collaboration in group projects and social situations. The sport also requires quick thinking and adaptability, key traits that help improve cognitive function. Moreover, soccer is great for improving endurance and coordination.

Basketball

Basketball is another team sport that demands attention, quick thinking, and physical fitness. It encourages strategic planning, which boosts a child’s problem-solving and decision-making abilities. The constant movement in basketball also promotes stamina and coordination. Kids who play basketball are often better at multitasking and staying organized, skills that come in handy when managing schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

Martial Arts

Martial arts, such as karate, judo, and taekwondo, are fantastic for developing both physical strength and mental discipline. These sports teach kids self-control, respect, and perseverance, qualities that are crucial for academic success. Martial arts also require intense focus, balance, and self-defense techniques, which can improve attention span and mental clarity. The mental fortitude gained from martial arts often translates into better problem-solving skills in the classroom.

Track and Field

Track and field sports like running, jumping, and throwing improve physical endurance and mental toughness. Kids involved in track and field sports develop a strong work ethic, as success often depends on individual effort. The perseverance required to improve times or distances teaches kids the value of hard work and dedication—important qualities that can help them excel academically.

Golf

Golf is a sport that requires patience, focus, and mental discipline. It challenges kids to think strategically and make calculated decisions. Golf also teaches kids how to manage both successes and failures, which can help build emotional resilience in academic settings. The sport’s emphasis on precision and attention to detail can help kids sharpen their focus in the classroom.

Sports are more than just physical activities—they are tools that can help children develop the skills needed to excel academically. From improved concentration to better time management and emotional resilience, the benefits of sports extend far beyond the field or court. By engaging in sports like tennis and swimming, children learn valuable life skills that set them up for success in the classroom and beyond. Whether it’s tennis, basketball, swimming or other activities, encouraging your child to participate in sports can pave the way for academic excellence and personal growth.

Come with us as we explore the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. We decided to stop here on our way back from Uji.

When you first enter the museum head up to the desk and buy your tickets (we didn’t need to make a reservation, we walked right in, but you’ll want to confirm before your visit). The entrance fee was around $4 USD to visit and included a keepsake sake cup and 3 coins to use in the sake tasting room. I honestly can’t remember if we paid with a card or cash but I want to say they took both.

The first room you make your way through goes over the history of Sake, where it was started for them and what types of Sakes they used to make and do make. It’s really interesting to see how it first began and to where it is now. They do have little info plaques next to items in the case and some of them have English translation. But I think you still get the story without it being in English!

One of the rooms you walk through shows you the process that goes into make Sake and the type of equipment they used historically and use today. They also had videos playing to show you the process.

After you make your way through the museum the last room you will go though is the sake tasting room. Your entrance ticket comes with 3 tastings but if you want to try more after those 3 you can buy more tokens. At the tables they have a sheet with all the Sakes you can try to help you to decide what Sake you want to try first.

There are also Sake professionals in the room that will talk to you about Sake, the flavor profiles, what order to try in and provide suggestions. Our pro was a wealth of information and so interesting to learn from.

Once you’ve decided on your Sakes, go up to the machine, put your coin in, press the button, and fill your cup up.

When you are done sampling the Sake you can stop at the gift shop to pick up your favorite bottles of Sake to take home with you. We bought a few bottles and I appreciated that they had some of the Sake in smaller bottles because its just me drinking it lol.

Wine bottle travel bags, less than $10 at Amazon for a pack of 10…well worth it!

Tip: We brought wine bottle travel bags to Japan with us and used them for Sake and other fragile items that we brought home. The bags take very little space on way to Japan. To use, simply insert the bottle in the bag and use the hand pump to inflate with air. Our Sake and other fragile items arrived home perfectly safe!

I would definitely recommend coming to this Sake museum if you have time. We spent about an hour here and that wasn’t rushing.

When you’re done at Gekkeikan Okura if you have time make sure to explore the immediate area. There are a couple Shrine/Temples to visit. We visited the Benzaiten Chokenji Temple before we went to the museum, we did some fortunes as well as getting a goshin for our book. You can also take sightseeing boat tours along the canal that are right by the museum.

Why Vegetarian Side Dishes Are a Must-Have

Cooking can be a lot of fun, especially when you don’t have to stress about complicated recipes. Vegetarian side dishes are simple to make, packed with goodness, and can turn even a basic dinner into something special.

And if you’re juggling schoolwork, sometimes you just need a quick meal without distractions. Just like how you might use a college paper writing service PaperWriter.com to save time on assignments, these easy vegetarian side dishes can help you enjoy great food without extra stress. Plus, pairing them with the right wine can make dinner feel extra fancy, even on a student budget.

Easy and Tasty Vegetarian Side Dishes

Garlic Butter Roasted Carrots

Roasted carrots are a delicious side that brings out their natural sweetness. Toss them in butter, garlic, and a pinch of salt, then roast them until they’re soft and slightly crispy on the edges. This side pairs well with a light Pinot Grigio, which enhances the subtle sweetness of the carrots without overpowering them.

Mashed Potatoes

They’re rich, creamy, and comforting. Just boil potatoes, mash them with butter and milk (or plant-based alternatives), and season with salt and pepper. A glass of Chardonnay pairs well with mashed potatoes, complementing the buttery texture and creamy flavor.

Balsamic Glazed Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts roasted with balsamic vinegar and a little honey are incredibly tasty. The glaze caramelizes in the oven, giving them a sweet and tangy kick. Pair them with a glass of Merlot, which complements the rich, roasted flavors of the dish.

Parmesan Roasted Cauliflower

Cauliflower roasted with parmesan and herbs is a crispy, cheesy delight. This dish has a savory, nutty flavor that pairs wonderfully with a glass of white wine like Viognier, which has a slight floral note that balances out the roasted taste.

Garlic Herb Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes roasted with garlic and herbs are a warm and cozy side dish. Their natural sweetness pairs well with a light-bodied red wine like Grenache, which enhances their rich, earthy taste.

Roasted Zucchini with Parmesan

Simply slice zucchini, toss it with olive oil, sprinkle some parmesan, and bake it until golden. This side dish is light yet full of flavor, making it a perfect match for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which highlights the fresh, slightly nutty taste of the zucchini.

Spicy Roasted Chickpeas

For a crunchy and protein-packed side, roasted chickpeas are a fantastic option. Coat them in olive oil, salt, paprika, and a little chili powder, then bake until crispy. They make a great snack or side dish, and their smoky flavor pairs well with Zinfandel, a red wine that enhances their spice without overpowering their taste.

Honey Glazed Roasted Beets

Beets have a naturally sweet and earthy taste, and roasting them with honey enhances their flavor even more. Slice them thin, drizzle with honey and a little balsamic vinegar, and roast until caramelized. Their rich taste goes well with Pinot Noir..

Crispy Polenta Fries

Polenta fries are a fun and unexpected vegetarian side dish. Simply slice cooked polenta into sticks, bake until crispy, and serve with marinara sauce or garlic aioli. Their crunchy texture pairs nicely with Prosecco, a light and bubbly wine that balances the richness of the fries.

Stuffed Mushrooms

Mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese, herbs, and breadcrumbs make for a decadent side dish. Bake them until golden and creamy, then serve with a glass of Merlot, a smooth and fruity wine that pairs perfectly with the umami flavor of mushrooms.

Creative Twists on Classic Side Dishes

If you love traditional side dishes but want to switch things up, here are some creative twists that keep things interesting:

Garlic and Herb Mashed Cauliflower – A low-carb alternative to mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower is creamy, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make. Pair it with Sauvignon Blanc for a light and refreshing contrast.

Cinnamon Roasted Butternut Squash – Roasting butternut squash with cinnamon and nutmeg gives it a cozy, warm flavor. A great match for Riesling, which brings out the natural sweetness of the squash.

Maple Glazed Carrots with Pecans – Adding pecans and a maple glaze gives carrots a crunch and caramelized flavor that pairs well with Pinot Grigio.

Balsamic Roasted Eggplant – Eggplant absorbs flavors beautifully, and roasting it with balsamic and garlic makes it rich and savory. A bold Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with its deep, smoky flavors.

Why Wine Pairing Matters

Pairing the right wine with your food makes a huge difference. The right wine can make a dish taste even better, balancing out the flavors and adding depth. Even if you’re just making a quick side dish, choosing the right wine makes it feel like a complete meal.

The key to good wine pairing is balance. Lighter dishes go well with crisp, fresh wines, while richer dishes match better with fuller-bodied options. If you’re new to wine pairing, start with the basics—white wine for light and fresh dishes, red wine for richer and roasted sides.

Simple Tips for Cooking and Pairing Like a Pro

Keep ingredients simple. Fresh vegetables, herbs, and a little seasoning go a long way.

Balance flavors. If a dish is creamy, pair it with something crisp. If it’s tangy, go for a wine with slight sweetness.

Experiment and have fun! Cooking is about trying new things, and there’s no perfect formula—just what tastes good to you.

Final Thoughts

Vegetarian side dishes are easy, delicious, and perfect for any meal. Whether you’re cooking a full dinner or just need a quick bite, these sides are simple to make and packed with flavor.

Adding the right wine can make even the simplest meal feel special, turning an ordinary dinner into a great experience. So next time you cook, try out one of these sides, pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy!

Making Classic Dishes Vegetarian Can Be Fun

Food is a big part of culture, tradition, and comfort. However, many traditional meals rely on meat for flavor and texture, making the idea of a vegetarian version seem impossible. But with a little creativity, you can transform these classics into something just as satisfying—without using the usual substitutes like tofu or seitan.

The trick to a great vegetarian dish isn’t just removing the meat; it’s about replacing it with something that keeps the original flavors and textures intact. Sometimes, that means using ingredients that are already in your kitchen but in unexpected ways. Think about how carrots, mushrooms, nuts, or even lentils can step in and take over the role of meat in a dish without making it feel like something is missing.

If you’re a student balancing life, classes, and maybe even work, cooking vegetarian meals doesn’t have to be complicated. Plus, while you’re experimenting in the kitchen, you might also be juggling assignments. That’s when an online essay writer for students can come in handy, taking some of the stress off your plate while you focus on cooking something delicious. Now, let’s get into the fun part—turning classic dishes vegetarian in ways you never expected!

Unexpected Ingredients That Mimic Meat Texture

Sunflower Seeds as a Base for Taco Filling

Ground sunflower seeds might sound unusual, but when blended with spices and lightly toasted, they create a crumbly, flavorful taco filling that’s both high in protein and deeply satisfying. Mix them with smoked chipotle, cumin, and a splash of lime juice for a filling that holds up just like seasoned ground beef.

Artichoke Hearts for a Seafood-Style Dish

If you love seafood but want a vegetarian option, artichoke hearts are the secret ingredient. Their slightly briny, tender texture makes them a great swap for crab or fish in dishes like ceviche or fish tacos. Shred them up, toss them with lemon, seaweed flakes, and a little Old Bay seasoning, and they bring all the flavors of the sea—without any actual seafood.

Shredded Beets for a Juicy Burger

Most veggie burgers are either too mushy or too dry, but shredded beets create a texture that mimics a juicy burger patty. When mixed with brown rice, walnuts, and spices, beets add a natural sweetness and deep color that makes these burgers stand out. Sear them in a hot pan for a crisp outer layer, and stack them high with your favorite toppings.

Bringing Out Bold Flavors Without Meat

Use Charred Mushrooms for Smokiness

One of the hardest things to replicate in vegetarian dishes is the smoky, deep flavor that comes from grilling or slow-cooking meat. A great trick is to char mushrooms in a dry pan until they are deep brown and crispy, then deglaze them with soy sauce or balsamic vinegar. This works wonders in fajitas, stir-fries, or even as a topping for pasta.

Enhance Umami with Fermented Foods

Meat dishes often have a rich umami flavor, which can be replicated using fermented ingredients like miso, tamari, or kimchi. Adding a spoonful of miso to soup or sauce gives it a deep, savory taste. Tamari adds an extra punch to roasted vegetables, while kimchi brings a tangy kick to rice bowls and sandwiches.

Caramelized Onions for a Depth of Flavor

Caramelized onions take time, but they add a depth of flavor that can replace the richness of meat in many dishes. Cook them low and slow until they turn golden and jammy, then add them to sandwiches, pasta sauces, or grain bowls for a naturally sweet and savory boost.

Creative Ways to Reinvent Classic Comfort Foods

Turn Sweet Potatoes into a Cheesy, Creamy Pasta Sauce

Instead of using heavy cream, blend roasted sweet potatoes with garlic, nutritional yeast, and a splash of vegetable broth to create a rich, cheesy pasta sauce. It has a creamy texture similar to Alfredo but with a natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with herbs and black pepper.

Carrot “Lox” for a Smoked Salmon Alternative

If you love bagels with smoked salmon, try thinly slicing carrots, marinating them in liquid smoke, soy sauce, and lemon juice, and then baking them until soft and silky. The result is a smoky, savory topping that pairs perfectly with cream cheese, capers, and fresh dill.

Lentils as a Base for Shepherd’s Pie

Instead of ground beef, stewed lentils with mushrooms and red wine make an incredibly rich and hearty filling for shepherd’s pie. The key is to cook them slowly until thick and flavorful, then top with mashed potatoes and bake until golden.

Mashed White Beans as a Creamy Dairy Substitute

A lot of creamy dishes rely on butter, cream, or cheese, but mashed white beans offer a nutritious and smooth alternative without sacrificing richness. By blending cooked cannellini beans with garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice, you get a velvety base that works well in:

Pasta sauces

Creamy soups

Mashed potato alternatives

This method doesn’t just replace dairy—it adds protein and fiber, making meals even more filling and satisfying.

Cabbage Steaks as a Hearty Alternative to Meat Cutlets

For something completely unexpected, thick slices of cabbage roasted or grilled can take on a meaty, juicy quality that’s surprisingly filling. The trick is to:

Cut thick rounds of cabbage to maintain structure.

Marinate them in a smoky, umami-rich sauce with soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, and garlic.

Roast or grill until the edges are crispy and caramelized.

Serve with mashed potatoes, chimichurri sauce, or a creamy tahini dressing for a plant-based steak alternative that’s bold and full of flavor.

Making traditional dishes vegetarian doesn’t mean losing flavor or satisfaction. By using unexpected ingredients and bold flavors, you can create plant-based versions of your favorite meals that are just as comforting and delicious.

Whether you’re swapping sunflower seeds for taco meat or using artichoke hearts for seafood dishes, these creative ideas will change how you think about vegetarian cooking. The best part? You don’t have to follow a strict recipe—experiment, have fun, and find what works for you. Cooking should be enjoyable, and with a little imagination, you can make any dish work in a new, plant-based way!
