NOTE: This was originally published in 2011, updated at the bottom in 2019, taken off line for a number of year and republished now as a reminder to myself and others and will have a 2026 update in the near future.

For years I have let fear dictate my life. It has been a constant chatter of:

“Don’t quit your job–you’ll never find another one”

“Don’t move to a different place, you won’t find work or a place to live”

“Don’t travel, the world is dangerous”

“Work more, have more jobs, make more money..you don’t want to end up broke and homeless do you?”

This and so much more has been the recurring thoughts over the last 20 years.

So, I put my head down, dug in, and proceeded to live the “American dream”: married, 2 kids, house, 2 cars, a job with benefits. Check, check, check.

Note, I really think this is the dream of my parents’ generation. You get married and you stay at a job for 25 years, you retire, if you’re lucky you enjoy a few years of retirement, and then die.

I can’t believe I’ve bought into this lie for so long.

I have always felt an internal struggle.

I knew this wasn’t how I wanted to live, but I allowed fear to hold me back and to whisper in my ear that this was as good as it was ever going to get.

You know the fear gremlin, the one that says “Who do you think you are expecting to live your dream?” “You have a great job/life…why do you think you deserve anything else?” and on and on ad nauseam.

Do you ever feel this way? That you are having a tug of war between “what is expected” and “living your dream”?

I just read a great article by Barrie Davenport that said the things you fear really does not exist.

That “our fears are just stories we tell ourselves.”

We then allow those stories to make us a victim, we have built up the stories in our mind and it has become truth.

That really resonated with me, especially during this time of transition.

A year ago I started toying with an idea.

I paid off bills, I reduced expenses, and I saved money.

Fear was along for the entire ride. Telling me I couldn’t make it happen, telling me I wasn’t good enough, or even worthy of living the life I want.

A couple of weeks ago I finally looked that fear in the eye and told it to get behind me. That I no longer wanted it in my life.

I have lived in its shadow for far too damn long and I am done!

And then I closed my eyes and

jumped

At the end of this month, I am quitting my job and pursuing the things I love: photography, blogging, and travel.

No longer will I allow my life to be dictated to by a corporation. I refuse to continue to be just a cog in their big machine. {{side note: I will be doing freelance work, on my terms, so if you were worried about my financial well being, fear not, I’ve got it covered, but thanks for the concern :)}}

Scared?? You better believe it.

The initial stomach churn of the free fall is in full effect.

The fear starts to eat away at me and I have

to wrestle control from it and

tell it to back the hell off!

Will I make mistakes?? You betcha.

Will I learn from them. I sure will.

Is it a mistake to quit my well paying job in a down economy so that I have more time to truly live my life?

Maybe, but that’s the thing, you don’t know it’s a mistake until you try.

And I’ve decided I would rather live the rest of my life filled with “at least I tried” instead of “what if’s”

It’s taken me a LONG time to get to this point, but that is o.k. I’ve needed all the experiences in my life up to this point to make sure I’m successful in the future, I truly believe that.

One thing I know for certain is that the changes I’m making will create a whole new world for me.

I was once told that I could stand in a boat tied to the dock of life and watch all the other ships pass by.

Always.

Or I could push off from shore and see where the tide takes me.

The choice was mine and I was reminded that boats aren’t built for the harbor, they are built for sailing the seas.

Just like our lives are not meant to be lived in fear, they are meant to be embraced and lived fully; both the width and length of it.

An Update: 8+ Years Later (9.30.2019)

Note: The year before the leap was difficult. Read about recognizing fear and living my best life ever here.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 8+ years since I wrote this post.

What an incredible journey it has been.

It hasn’t always been sunshine and unicorns, but I can tell you it’s ALWAYS been worth it.

I have not once regretted quitting my day job and pursuing a different career path.

Not. Once.

Were their failures along the way? You better believe it. Way too many failures, but that’s ok because at least I tried something new and different.

Those failures and success have led me to live my best life ever and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

Since this post, I’ve traveled to countless places, met incredible people, written two travel books, sent two children off to start their own journeys and have found a place of gratitude and joy I didn’t know was possible.

Would I do it all over again?

Without hesitation.

The thing is though, standing on the cliff, the view can often be foggy. You can’t see the net that is waiting to catch you.

The view of the opportunities that await you are blocked.

It, quite honestly, is a leap of faith.

However, the only thing that is certain is that none of us get out of this alive. We can either go living our dreams and taking chances or we can go sitting on the couch watching life pass us on by.

That’s the thing with leaps of faith. You have to have a whole lotta faith, maybe a backup plan, and a big set of balls.

It’s scary AF, but what a rush. There is no better feeling than to know you tried and succeeded.

Am I saying quit your day job? Heck no! We have to have some way to fund those dreams 🙂

I’m saying follow those dreams, live your best life and do that while taking care of your finances. I’m proof it can be done!

It’s not all playtime here. I work HARD, but it’s worth every ounce of sweat and tears. Find your dream, give it a go. I’m convinced that we’re allowed to have as many dreams as possible. Some of those we may find aren’t a good fit or maybe they aren’t meant to last forever.

Try them on for size, wear them around for a while. When you’re ready, grab ahold of the next dream.

What’s better than looking back on the fabric of your life and seeing it woven with the dreams you lived?

That should be our goal: No Regrets!

Living our best life every, single. day.

I’ve been on the journey of blogging and travel writing for almost 10 years.

I feel a shift and change coming.

I’m not sure what that looks like yet, but I feel more aware of myself and the universe around me to know that something big is going to happen soon.

Maybe another book will start to be penned? Maybe another site beyond StrangerTravelsUSA will be started? Heck, maybe I’m ready to start a new business.

Whatever it is, it’s going to be great and when the opportunity presents itself I know I’ll be ok taking another giant leap of faith.

When it comes to sprucing up the home, there are some fantastic ideas homeowners are sharing with each other. From kitchen spaces to loft conversions, so many plans are executed to perfection. Even when assessing a home’s outdoor setting, dedicated gamers are looking to gamify their gardens.

After all, as far as entertainment options go, gaming is one of the biggest. It should, therefore, come as no surprise to see homeowners everywhere deciding to go with a gaming-inspired garden design. From console favorites like Elden Ring and iconic franchises like the Zelda series to online blackjack games like Touchdown Blackjack and battle royale masterpieces like Fortnite, almost everyone is gaming these days, and there are some special titles to bring into the home.

Of course, not all gamers necessarily want to gamify their gardens, but some do. So, if you’re considering doing the same to your backyard, below are some ways to create a gaming-themed garden.

Focus on layout

First and foremost, you need to assess the layout of your garden to see what could work and what might not. For instance, if you’re keen to add a classic maze as you see in Pac-Man, then it might not work if you don’t have the required space. Likewise, if you want a donkey theme, given your love of Donkey Kong, then you’ll need to ensure you have enough trees. Additionally, do you have the right layout to add colored paving stones that represent game paths? These playful elements can really make or break your design, making it important to focus on the layout of your outside space before embarking on your build.

Consider adding statues of familiar characters

A sure-fire way to bring a gaming theme to your garden is by adding some familiar characters to it. You’ll need to check whether the product you’re interested in is suitable for the outdoors, but if it is, then throwing in some iconic gaming faces into your bushes and on your patio can really go a long way. From a Fallout Dark Horse PVC Ghoul Statue to classic Spider-Man creations, you’ll be filled with potential acquisitions to make here should you decide to adopt this particular approach.

Create a wildlife-friendly space

Some of the most iconic games out there also feature large populations of loveable creatures, including animals. If you want to bring some wildlife into your home, then consider making it inviting for local wildlife to frequent. Bird feeds work, butterfly gardens are lovely, and you even go with a bee hotel.

Add interactive features

To make your gaming-themed garden even more spectacular, you should consider adding some interactive game elements that mirror the real-life offering in the virtual world. You can turn ordinary garden features into playful additions. For instance, some people consider snapping up stepping stones that are based around a particular title. Likewise, you can add a life-sized chessboard or an outdoor bowling alley, while some people even add a mini racing track or a wizard’s chessboard from iconic productions like Harry Potter. There are so many avenues you can go down here.

Don’t forget to update it

In the same way that game updates can transform a title, gardens with a strong gaming theme should also be refreshed from time to time. Don’t be afraid to go with a new gaming theme at certain times of the year, while you could also add the same seasonal events many products have to your garden’s design. For instance, in the summer, you could add a sprinkling of anime art from Genshin Impact, while for Halloween, you might prefer a darker theme from Resident Evil.

When there is an urge to get off the beaten track a bit and shake up travel plans, coming up with
a new destination can be tough. For many, the tropical beach type vacation has been done time
and time again, and that’s because it’s the style of break that’s promoted heavily when you go to
a travel agent. But that’s not for everyone all the time, and finding inspiration to break the tired
old cycle can be tricky.

However, help is at hand, with a look at alternative sources of inspiration that could fuel your
next trip. If you are itching to hop on a plane or a train to go off and find your next adventure,
then you can forget all the boring ways, like visiting the travel agent or sinking countless hours
into internet searches. Why not, instead, use what’s around you to reveal where you should
head?

Getting in the Game

Who doesn’t play games these days? Whether it’s matching gems on your phone, battling it out
online with friends, or spinning the reels at an online casino for a touch of thrill, there’s
inspiration to be had. No need to splash out on a travel agent, either. For instance, on the best
MuchBetter casino platforms or PayPal-friendly sites, you can make small deposits with your
preferred e-wallet or card and try a few themed slots. Many draw on the cultures of Egypt,
Greece, or the jungles of Mexico.
If video games are more your thing, titles like Assassin’s Creed offer stunning recreations of real
cities such as Florence and Venice. You’ll find equally rich settings in Ghost of Tsushima, which
captures the landscapes and architecture of feudal Japan with exceptional attention to detail, or
Red Dead Redemption 2, set across the vivid streets of Saint Denis, inspired by New Orleans.
After experiencing places digitally, it could be worth jumping into them in real life, just to get your
own taste of adventure.

Booking the Date

Most people have to book some time off work to go about their travels, and the calendar can
serve as some great travel inspiration as well. Look up the date when you can travel and then
conduct research about what happened on that particular date in history. This doesn’t have to
be a monumental date like July 4th, for example, because dig deep enough into any date, and
you’ll find plenty of inspiration.

It could be travelling to Boston, Massachusetts on March 10th, matching the date and place
where Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone call, or a visit to Berlin on
November 9th (fall of the Berlin wall) or perhaps a visit to the Bahamas on October 12th, when
Christopher Columbus first arrived there.

Asking AI

Although this is dipping your toes into internet research, checking out places where AI thinks is
a good idea for you to go could produce interesting results. Throw some prompts at it with what
type of holiday you are looking for, what adventures you’re looking for, and whether it’s
backpacking, glamping or city hopping, and see what it comes up with.
You can even get it to create an itinerary for you so you don’t miss a thing. This is increasingly
becoming a travel trend, given that we are relying on AI for everything, so let it get creative and
suggest somewhere you may never have thought of.

The Opposite Game

Not the most exciting thing in the world, but we all check the weather. You could play the
opposite game with whatever your weather app is telling you, by completely flipping your local
weather on its head and finding a location that matches the new conditions.
If your local weather is reporting nothing but clear blue skies and high humidity, why not shock
your system and go somewhere cold and arid? You could also do this geographically, because
if you are coming from a big city, plant yourself in a small rural town and enjoy the uniqueness
that those environments bring.

The Travel List

There are endless opportunities for creating a list of creative travel destinations. A lot of people
search for the best beaches in a location, but why not tap into some more random searches?
How about curating a list of the best Ghost Towns, UNESCO creative cities or bizarre
museums? You can really tap into your own passions and pastimes as inspiration for travel lists,
and it can be a great way to plan road trips.

Getting Creative

Travel doesn’t have to be mundane, and sources of inspiration can come from anywhere, such
as a social media snap, reading about a location in a novel, or even just discovering the name
of a city for the first time and deciding to go there on a whim. Creativity is the key to adventure
and fun.

Calling all KISS fans, did you know KISS once rocked in Cadillac, Michigan back in 1975? This fall, we’re turning back the clock and celebrating in true KISS fashion with the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion happening October 9–12, 2025!

A Small Town Meets a Legendary Band

Picture it: small-town Michigan in the early ‘70s. Autumn weekends mean crisp air, changing leaves, and a packed stadium for Viking football. The community rallies behind its team, which just wrapped up a flawless season. Hopes are sky-high until the following year begins with back-to-back losses. Spirits sink, and coaches Dave Brines and Jim Neff know they need something different to fire up their players.

That’s when Jim Neff, the assistant coach with a passion for rock and roll, turns to music. Not just any music, though something bold enough to shake things up. His pick? A rising band called KISS. Their thunderous sound, explosive energy, and in your face style were unlike anything Cadillac had seen before. And as fate would have it, their name lined up perfectly with an old football saying: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

The effect was immediate. The locker room buzzed with adrenaline, the team roared back with new confidence, and Cadillac unknowingly carved its name into KISS history. What started as a coaching experiment soon turned into a legendary connection between a small Michigan town and one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

When KISS finally rolled into Cadillac in 1975, the town went wild. Fans lined the streets to see the band in full makeup, and the players got a once in a lifetime pep boost when the group joined them on the field. Autographs were signed, photos were snapped, and Cadillac suddenly found itself on the national radar, all thanks to a bold rock band and a small-town team looking for a spark.

Experience the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion

Now, fifty years later, Cadillac is ready to celebrate that legendary connection. For four days this October, our little town in Northern Michigan will be filled with KISS spirit, music, stories, and plenty of rock and roll nostalgia. In between the events, you can soak in the fall colors, stroll downtown, or explore the lakes and trails that make Cadillac such a perfect autumn getaway.

Mark your calendars, KISS fans, because this is one reunion you won’t want to miss.

This October, we’re bringing that legendary energy back to life! From downtown displays and museum exhibits to live music, tailgates, and even a KISS-themed drone show, the KISS 50 Cadillac Reunion lets fans experience the spirit of 1975 all over again. Whether you’re reliving the memories or discovering Cadillac’s rock history for the first time, every moment of the weekend is packed with music, fun, and nostalgia.

Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a place where dreams ride the crest of a wave and every street corner hums with a lively beat. It’s a town that’s got it all—glitz that’ll knock your socks off, history that’s tighter than a drum, and a salty seaside charm that hooks you faster than you can say “Boardwalk.”

The Jackpot Sounds team rolled into AC with stars in our eyes, ready to sniff out the best adventures to make your trip sing. Here’s our handpicked list of things to do that’ll have you falling head over heels for this coastal jewel.

1. Roll the Dice at the Casinos

You’d be barking up the wrong tree if you thought you could skip Atlantic City’s casinos. These neon-lit palaces are the city’s lifeblood, pumping out thrills like there’s no tomorrow.

From the high-rolling Borgata to the grand dame Caesars, there’s a spot for every card shark and dreamer. The Jackpot Sounds crew visited and rated Borgata’s poker room as a real feather in the cap—sleek tables, crackling energy, and tournaments that’ll keep you on pins and needles.

Whether you’re spinning slots, dealing blackjack, or betting on roulette, the vibe’s so electric it could light up a firecracker.

A word to the wise: keep your wallet on a short leash, but don’t miss the free show—people-watching here is worth its weight in gold. Try your hand at a game, soak up the buzz, and who knows? You might just hit the jackpot and be grinning like a Cheshire cat.

2. Take a Spin on the Boardwalk

The Atlantic City Boardwalk is a four-mile stretch of pure magic, where history and hustle rub shoulders like old pals. It’s the kind of place where you can kick up your heels and let the good times roll.

Stroll past quirky shops hawking everything from T-shirts to trinkets, snag a bag of saltwater taffy from Fralinger’s, and tip your hat to the street performers who’ve got more pizzazz than a barrel of monkeys.

Feeling spry?

Rent a bike or hop in a rolling chair—a rickshaw-like ride that’s as old-school as apple pie. Sip a frosty drink, feel the ocean breeze tickle your skin, and let the Boardwalk’s charm sweep you off your feet.

Day or night, this iconic strip is a sure bet for making memories that stick like glue.

3. Catch a Show That’ll Knock Your Socks Off

Boardwalk Hall is where Atlantic City pulls out all the stops, serving up entertainment that’s hotter than a two-dollar pistol.

This historic gem hosts everything from rock concerts that’ll have you dancing in the aisles to comedy shows that leave you in stitches. You can catch a sold-out gig here and couldn’t stop raving about the killer acoustics and old-world grandeur. It’s like stepping into a time machine with a VIP pass. Check the lineup for big names or offbeat events like boxing matches that pack a punch. Snag tickets early to get the catbird seat, and brace yourself for a night that’ll have you over the moon.

4. Eat Your Heart Out

Atlantic City’s food scene is a smorgasbord that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance. Whether you’re in the mood to paint the town red with a fancy meal or keep it down-to-earth, AC’s got you covered. For a swanky night out, pull up a chair at Old Homestead Steakhouse, where the visitors sink their teeth into a ribeye so tender it melted like butter.

If you’re jonesing for something more laid-back, hightail it to White House Sub Shop, where the cheesesteaks are so legendary they could write their own ticket. And don’t sleep on the seafood—Dock’s Oyster House dishes up clams and crab so fresh they practically swim to your plate.

From hole-in-the-wall joints to high-end haunts, AC’s culinary game is a home run every time.

5. Kick Back on the Beach

When it’s time to take a breather, Atlantic City’s beaches are your ticket to paradise. They’re free, squeaky-clean, and perfect for letting your worries slip away like sand through your fingers.

Spread out a towel, let the waves sing you a lullaby, and soak up the sun till you’re as golden as a pancake. If you’re itching for action, rent a surfboard or paddleboard and ride the waves like a pro. It’s a soul-soothing way to start the day that’ll leave you cool as a cucumber.

Whether you’re building sandcastles or chasing seagulls, the beach is where AC’s magic feels like a warm hug.

6. Climb to New Heights at Absecon Lighthouse

For a taste of history with a side of jaw-dropping views, make a beeline for Absecon Lighthouse. This 1857 beauty is New Jersey’s tallest, and its 228 steps are a small price to pay for a panorama that’ll knock your socks off.

From the top, you’ll see the AC skyline and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out like a painter’s canvas. You’ll love poking around the museum at the base, where stories of shipwrecks and keepers light up the past.

If you’re feeling brave, sign up for an evening tour—those creaky stairs and ghostly tales might just give you goosebumps.

It’s a climb that’s worth its salt, and the selfies alone will make your friends green with envy.

7. Shop and Party at The Quarter

Tucked inside Tropicana, The Quarter is a slice of America’s Playground that’s as lively as a three-ring circus. This indoor maze of shops, bars, and eateries is where you can shop till you drop, sip cocktails that pack a wallop, and dance like nobody’s watching. Browse boutiques for souvenirs that won’t break the bank, knock back a mojito at Cuba Libre, or cut a rug at Boogie Nights, where the disco ball spins faster than gossip.

8. Get Your Adrenaline Fix with Water Sports

If you’ve got a need for speed, Atlantic City’s waters are calling your name. Jet ski rentals, parasailing, and deep-sea fishing are just a hop, skip, and a jump from the shore. Feel free to try your hand at parasailing and couldn’t stop yammering about the bird’s-eye view of the coastline—it’s like flying with the wind in your hair.

Local outfitters make it a breeze to gear up, and whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned pro, the ocean’s playground is a whale of a good time. Just don’t forget the sunscreen, or you’ll be red as a lobster by sundown.

9. Step Back in Time at Steel Pier

Steel Pier is where nostalgia and thrills go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. This amusement park juts out over the ocean, offering rides that’ll have your heart racing faster than a jackrabbit.

From the Ferris wheel’s sky-high views to the slingshot ride that’ll leave you screaming bloody murder, there’s no shortage of fun.

Why Atlantic City Steals the Show

Las Vegas of the East Coast isn’t just a destination—it’s a state of mind. It’s where you can roll the dice on a big win, kick your shoes off on the sand, or belt out a tune at a concert that’s the cat’s meow. Jackpot Sounds fell hard for AC’s mix of old-school soul and modern swagger, and we’re betting our bottom dollar you will too. This town’s got a knack for turning every moment into a story you’ll tell for years, whether you’re chasing thrills or just soaking up the vibe.

So, pack your bags, leave your troubles in the dust, and get ready to paint the town red. Atlantic City’s waiting to show you a whale of a time, and with this guide in your back pocket, you’re in for a trip that’s the whole nine yards. What’s first on your list? Let the good times roll!

I was born and raised in Cadillac and while growing up here there was not much to do. You basically had like three options, go to the movies, bowling, or do an outdoor activity like swimming, hiking, taking out a four wheeler on the trails, fishing, skiing or snowboarding. You get the gist of it and a lot of people couldn’t afford the fancy outdoor toys including my family.

I spent a lot of time outdoors, hanging out with the neighbors and riding my bike. Thinking back on it, I now realize how few activities Cadillac had compared to the places I’ve lived since. It kind of makes me sad.

After a number of years away, I moved back last year and I’m rediscovering my hometown through fresh eyes and finding that there are so many things to do now compared to a decade ago.

Right between the lakes you have Mitchell State Park that offers many sites as well as some cabins. The benefit of staying at this one is you’re right between two lakes and across the street from Carl T. Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center. The center offers hiking trails and numerous events throughout the year. This summer you can take a fly fishing seminar in July. Be sure to check out the other numerous activities available this summer. Another benefit of staying at the state park is the accessibility to nearby restaurants, and most importantly, coffee. Also, downtown Cadillac is just on the other side of Lake Cadillac about 10 minutes drive away.

Another campground to check out on the lake is Hemlock Campground. I haven’t stayed at Hemlock, but I’m definitely curious to try it. It looks perfect for campers that like a bit more privacy.

Outdoor Activities

One thing that hasn’t really changed, but has significantly improved is all the outdoor activities you can find in Cadillac year round. During the summer months you’ll find:

Hiking

Fishing

Boating

ATV Trails

Kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding

Disc golfing

Golfing

The Cadillac Area ATV trails are ready to welcome you with updates way signs, 2 trailhead staging areas, and more than 100 miles of mapped scenic ride miles. Don’t have an ATV? No worries, there are a number of rental facilities to help you out.

For those that love biking, you’ll want to ride the 200+ miles of multi-terrain trails. There are trails for families, fat-tire biking, and road biking.

Our personal favorite outdoor activity is kayaking with camping coming in a close second. When I want to get out on the water I tend to drop our kayaks on the Big Manistee River. Local outfitters can fit you with a kayak, canoe, and even a float tube if that is more your style.

Head Out To The Farm

Growing up, I had cornfields, dairy farms, as well as berry and pumpkin patches. But over the years, things have changed, and now visiting a farm is an experience in itself. Here are a few spots to check out:

Maple Leaf Farm & Creamery – Play with baby goats, attend a class, and most importantly, buy some delicious goat cheese.

Brinks Family Creamery a family dairy farm that creates premium milk and cheese products directly from the registered Holsteins. When you stop in be sure to get some ice cream.

A Little Lavender offers a roadside stand with lavender bundles, steam distilled hydrosol, lotion bars and more.

Cotton Creek Farms is an alpaca farm where you can visit with the alpacas and buy alpaca made goods.

Of course, if you’d like a one-stop shopping experience I highly recommend visiting the Cadillac Farmers Market to find the above products and so much more.

Explore the Live Music Scene

Since moving back I’ve learned there are a number of music venues now in town. I haven’t been to all of them, but they are on my list.

The Greenhouse at the Willow In addition to live music, they also host trivia and music bingo on Wednesday nights. From cover bands to magic shows and all kinds of entertainment you’ll want to look over the upcoming shows and buy tickets now as they tend to sell out.

Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion: The UpBeat Cadillac Summer Music Series returns at the Pavilion. Starts on 06/19/2025 and runs every Thu through 08/28/2025. Begins at 7:00pm.
Cadillac’s charming downtown is a delightful mix of retail shops, restaurants, and coffee spots. Some of our favorites include:

Serendipity and The Bird House: Great for unique finds.

For when you’re feeling hungry, you can stop by Indian Spice, Clam Lake Beer Co., or Mi Mezcal Mexican for a delicious meal.

Gardening Stops You Should Visit This Summer

If you’re into gardening, Cadillac and the surrounding area are home to some great greenhouses and garden centers:

Backyard Blossoms Greenhouse: I just discovered this one this year through a facebook post. Located in Tustin just a few miles from US 131 this Amish run greenhouse is simply adorable. Flowers, garden plants and indoor plants are all available as well as other gardening needs. It’s worth a visit just for the vibe. 19418 220th Ave, Tustin. They are open seasonally Monday-Saturday from 10a-6p. On your way to the greenhouse do yourself a favor and stop at the Yoder’s of Tustin store. Their bread and bakery items are top notch. Grab a sandwich if you are there around lunch time. You wont be disappointed. Note, Yoder’s is closed on Thursday and Sunday and only takes cash or check.

During our visit to Kyoto we decided to rent Kimonos to experience a bit of Japanese culture and to explore the Kiyomizu-dera temple area. We made a reservation for Rental Kimono Okamoto located in Kiyomizu.

Note, just about everything in Japan requires a reservation so make sure to book your experience.

What drew me to this kimono rental was the location near the temple and the fact that they offered tall and larger size kimonos! This is important if you’re a size 10 and up or over 5’7″ 🙂 We paid about $45 USD per person for the rentals.

We made an appointment for 9am and from start to finish it took about an hour. First, we picked out our kimono, belt, and purse and, since we opted for a hairstyle, we picked from one of about six styles. Trust me, pay for the hairstyle, it’s so cute and really completes the outfit.

After we had all the components for the kimono we went to the building next door to be dressed. In the entrance of the building we removed our shoes and were given a large tote bag. We then walked upstairs to a ladies only community dressing area.

We had worn a thin t-shirt layer which we left on under our kimono and we left our pants on until they got the first skirt layer on us which means we were never naked while being dressed by strangers. Because of the dressing situation we were not allowed to take any photos or videos so hopefully we can aptly describe the process.

As we were being dressed we put our clothes and purse (after removing important items) in the tote bag which was secured in a safe place until our return. The ladies that help you get your kimono on don’t speak much English, but they have translation cards that they show you if they need to share information with you. Honestly, the ladies are so efficient while getting you in the kimono but be prepared that there are many layers to the kimono and they cinch it tight! I kept on joking with my mom that corsets have nothing on Kimonos. About halfway through the kimono dressing we stopped to have our hair done.

Once our hair was styled all fancy, they finished getting the rest of the kimono components on us. The last step is to find a pair of sandals(flip flop style) that fit. We have large feet (size 9/10) so the sandals mostly fit but were a bit short, we made it work.

I can’t recommend this place enough! The ladies working there were so nice and helpful.

This location is so very close to the temple. It was simply a matter of walking down the alleyway to the main street then hanging a left. We then walked, uphill, less than a city block.

There are lots of places to take photos around the temple and we were fortunate to be there during the fall color change to have that added pop of colors. We didn’t walk all the way to the top of the temple because our shoes were not easy to walk in. We decided to play it safe and take photos at the base of the temple and not tempt the gods with the potential for a twisted ankle.

After we were done exploring the temple, we went in search of the matcha cloud cakes I kept on hearing about. As fate, or Japan, would have it, the cloud cakes were located half way down a very steep hill with, guess what, stairs. There is just no escaping the stairs in Japan so the best thing to do is embrace it with good shoes on or, in our case, Zori sandals.

Seating is a bit limited at kumonochi but we made our way up a narrow, steep staircase to the upstairs seating where we enjoyed a tasty cake, matcha tea, and a refreshing fruit drink.

After our matcha break it was back up the hill to the kimono rental to change back into our street clothes. Technically, we had until 6pm before we had to return our Kimonos but between the tightly cinched clothing and the uncomfortable shoes we decided our curiosity about what it’s like to wear a kimono was appeased.

Update 2025-

So we are getting ready for another trip to Japan this July and as I was researching what we wanted to do, I stumbled across this Kimono Shop in Kyoto that I thought I would share.

Rikawafuku has multiple locations in Kyoto, one being in the Kiyomizu area. This shop has gorgeous kimonos to choose from. They can fit up to a 41 inch waist and about 5’.6” height. They do say if you are taller no worries the hem and sleeves just might be a little shorter.

If you have other questions you want answered here are their FQA

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, nature enthusiasts eagerly anticipate an extended escape into the great outdoors. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or new to exploring nature, this weekend offers an excellent chance to immerse yourself in stunning landscapes. It will keep your refreshments chilled and ready when you need a break. Get ready to enjoy the best of what nature offers, with beautiful national parks and scenic trails awaiting your discovery.

Planning your nature getaway

Selecting the ideal destination is key to a fulfilling nature getaway. Whether you’re drawn to the towering peaks, lush woodlands, or sprawling deserts, your choice sets the stage for your adventure. Be sure to pack the essentials for your journey: a reliable backpack, a first aid kit, a map, and plenty of water. Based on your planned activities, you might also need durable hiking boots, a dependable tent, and layers of clothing to adapt to the weather conditions. Don’t leave the house without sunscreen and insect repellent to stay comfortable during your time outdoors. Planning well ensures you can fully enjoy the great outdoors.

Top national parks to visit

The United States is home to some of the most awe-inspiring national parks. Yellowstone National Park is known for its geothermal features and diverse wildlife. If you’re seeking a less crowded experience, consider visiting Congaree National Park in South Carolina, where you can wander among towering trees in the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern U.S. For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, parks like Great Basin National Park in Nevada offer a more peaceful retreat. Here, you can explore ancient bristlecone pines and gaze at the star-filled night sky in one of the darkest places in the country.

Scenic trails to explore

Hiking lovers will find plenty of scenic trails across the country. For breathtaking views, the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park presents an unforgettable experience as it descends into the canyon. Meanwhile, the Appalachian Trail provides a variety of landscapes from Georgia to Maine, with sections suitable for different skill levels.

If you’re traveling with family, consider exploring family-friendly trails like the Hidden Falls Trail in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. This trail is great for all ages and leads to a stunning waterfall, making it a perfect option for families looking to create lasting memories.

Eco-friendly travel tips

When enjoying the great outdoors, it’s vital to adopt eco-friendly practices to help preserve these natural treasures. Following Leave No Trace principles is essential, which includes proper waste disposal, respecting wildlife habitats, and sticking to marked trails to prevent erosion and damage to delicate ecosystems. Opt for eco-friendly gear that minimizes environmental impact. Products like the Omni Breeze natural beige are made with sustainability in mind and offer excellent performance and longevity. Reusable water bottles, solar-powered chargers, and biodegradable toiletries are wise choices that reduce waste and conserve resources. Packing out all trash and recycling whenever possible helps maintain the beauty of natural areas. Avoid single-use plastics by bringing reusable containers and utensils for meals. If you come across litter on your hikes, consider picking it up to leave the environment cleaner than you found.

Consider carpooling or using public transportation to reduce your carbon footprint when traveling to and from your destination. If you’re staying overnight, select eco-friendly accommodations or camp responsibly by choosing established campsites. By making thoughtful decisions and adopting green practices, you contribute to conserving these precious landscapes, ensuring they remain undamaged for future generations to enjoy.

Camping and picnicking tips

Camping offers an immersive way to appreciate nature. Choose a site that reflects your needs and be prepared for weather changes. Store your food correctly to avoid attracting wildlife; a backpack cooler from Cordova Outdoors can help keep your meals fresh and secure.

When planning meals, choose dishes that are easy to make and clean up. Bring reusable utensils and containers to minimize waste, and consider a portable stove or grill for added convenience. Prepping ingredients at home can save time and reduce the amount of packaging you bring into the wilderness.

It’s also wise to bring biodegradable soap and a small basin for washing dishes. Ensure you’re at least 200 feet away from water sources when cleaning up to protect the environment. Pack plenty of napkins or reusable cloths for spills and cleaning. For seating, lightweight folding chairs or a waterproof blanket can make your picnic more comfortable. Consider setting up a slight, portable shade or using a tarp to create a shelter from the sun or unexpected rain.

Finally, always pack out all your trash, including food scraps, to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the camping area. Use designated fire rings for campfires, and ensure the fire is entirely out before leaving. These tips will enhance your camping and picnicking experience while preserving the natural surroundings.

By practicing sustainable habits and being aware of your impact, you contribute to conserving these precious areas. So, pack your gear, grab your map, and set out to experience the serene and majestic beauty that awaits you.

South Africa’s natural world captivates not only with its beauty, but with its rhythm—an unfolding sequence of colors, sounds and movements that shifts from the first light on the savannah to the deep reds of a low-hanging sunset. For those seeking landscapes where wilderness feels close and visceral, the country offers rare opportunities to witness life in its most elemental form. It is a place where travelers are invited to observe, listen and move with the pace of nature.

Exploring this side of the country often begins with one of the many structured routes or guided journeys available. Whether self-driven or arranged through tailored South Africa tour packages, these routes help travelers engage with remote reserves, national parks and coastal ecosystems without missing the nuanced experiences that make the journey memorable. The emphasis is not on rushing from site to site, but on following the quiet thread that connects each wild place to the next.

The ‘wild side’ of South Africa reveals itself in more than dramatic scenery. It emerges in the silence of early morning, the intensity of a predator’s gaze, the sudden lift of a flock from a watering hole. It is a world governed by instinct, shaped by weather and time, and open to anyone willing to travel attentively.

Safari mornings and the rhythm of the bush

Kruger National Park remains one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world. Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, it is home to an immense variety of species, including large predators, herd animals, birds and reptiles. Yet what makes a safari in Kruger exceptional is not just the sightings, but the atmosphere. Mornings often begin in near silence, broken only by the distant call of a francolin or the crackle of a radio announcing a fresh set of tracks.

Game drives offer a chance to witness wildlife behaviours at close range: elephants bathing in riverbeds, lions resting in the grass, or hyenas circling a recent kill. Guides interpret these scenes not simply as isolated events, but as part of a larger ecological story—one that plays out differently with each sunrise.

In private reserves bordering Kruger, the experience can feel even more immersive. Smaller groups, off-road tracking and night drives expand the possibilities for close encounters, while still maintaining ethical wildlife viewing practices

Beyond big game: landscapes of subtle beauty

While large mammals often steal the spotlight, South Africa’s wilderness holds quieter treasures. The semi-arid Karoo stretches wide beneath cloudless skies, offering fossil-rich terrain and silence broken only by wind. In the Western Cape, the fynbos biome—one of the richest floral kingdoms on earth—displays an extraordinary array of plant life, many species found nowhere else.

The Drakensberg mountains, meanwhile, offer a completely different kind of wild. Steeped in mist and scattered with rock art, these peaks invite slower exploration on foot. Hikes through their valleys and escarpments reveal waterfalls, caves and views that stretch far beyond cultivated land. The mountains are not only a refuge for biodiversity, but for reflection—a space where solitude feels expansive rather than remote.

Coastal wilderness and marine encounters

South Africa’s wildness doesn’t stop at the shoreline. Along the country’s coasts, marine life flourishes in cold, nutrient-rich waters. In the Western Cape, travellers can spot southern right whales breaching just offshore or observe African penguins nesting on beaches near Simon’s Town.

The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coastlines add a tropical note, with coral reefs, estuaries and warm-water currents supporting turtles, dolphins and a wealth of fish species. Areas like Sodwana Bay attract divers, while coastal reserves such as iSimangaliso Wetland Park offer a fusion of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, a rare chance to see hippos, leopards and sea creatures in a single day.

For those drawn to quieter encounters, the Wild Coast offers remote beaches, dramatic cliffs and traditional villages where the land meets the Indian Ocean with little interruption. Trails here weave through coastal grasslands and over river mouths, revealing a different rhythm of life, untouched by large-scale development.

Light, sky and the changing day

Perhaps nowhere is South Africa’s wildness more deeply felt than in its light. From the pale gold of morning savannah to the rich copper tones of dusk over the Atlantic, light defines the visual experience of the landscape. In the bush, sunsets come with a quick descent into darkness, where sounds become sharper and outlines blur.

At night, the country’s remoter areas reveal a different wonder: clear skies, vast constellations and, in some seasons, the sight of the Milky Way stretching horizon to horizon. Stargazing becomes part of the rhythm, a quiet coda to the sensory experience of the day.

Photographers, painters, and writers often speak of South Africa as a place of light and line where the shape of the land and the movement of clouds offer constant inspiration. For travellers, even without a lens or canvas, this elemental beauty imprints itself on memory.

Responsible exploration and lasting impressions

Experiencing South Africa’s wilderness comes with responsibility. Visitors are increasingly aware of the need to travel in ways that support conservation, respect local communities and minimise environmental impact. Many reserves now incorporate local guides, support anti-poaching initiatives or fund habitat restoration efforts.

Engaging with these practices, whether by choosing ethical operators, participating in local conservation talks, or learning about endangered species, adds depth to the journey. It transforms the traveller from spectator to participant in the ongoing story of the land.

South Africa’s wild side is not a fixed place, but a mosaic of living systems. From the highlands to the ocean, from arid plains to tangled forests, it invites those who move through it to witness without intrusion, to listen more than they speak, and to leave a lighter footprint. This kind of travel doesn’t just reveal a destination, it shifts how we see the world.

Mental health is a significant student problem these days, and although stress, academic demands, and social factors receive much attention, we often neglect nutrition as a fundamental contributor. The foods young people consume daily influence more than just their energy levels and physical health. Daily nutrition dramatically impacts their mental processes and their ability to handle life challenges.

This article will explain the impact of poor nutrition on student mental health, provide indicators to monitor it, and demonstrate how dietary modifications can enhance emotional health.

Why Food Matters More Than You Think

When you balance exams with assignments alongside part-time work and maintaining social connections, reaching for quick, affordable, and filling food options is common. Consider foods like instant noodles, energy drinks, and sweets packed with sugar. These quick energy fixes deliver an instant energy boost but usually result in negative consequences.

The brain requires proper nutrients to operate optimally, just as a vehicle needs clean fuel to operate effectively. Vitamins B12 and D and omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and protein are essential nutrients that support optimal brain health. A deficiency in important nutrients leads to symptoms of fatigue and poor mental focus and can also trigger depression or anxiety.

Learners facing poor nutrition experience adverse mental health outcomes, which manifest as low energy levels, concentration issues, and higher anxiety. The academic challenges can further complicate their ability to manage schoolwork, generating additional stress. You can seek help from the best essay service at UKWritings during difficult times. Expert support enables education recipients to handle school responsibilities better while protecting their health. While it’s not a long-term solution, it can be helpful during tough periods when health issues hinder academic performance.

The Link Between Diet and Mood

Have you ever experienced irritability or exhaustion after missing a meal or consuming a sugary snack? There’s a reason for that.

Students who consume processed foods along with sugar and caffeine often face mood swings together with fatigue and mental fog. These foods cause rapid increases in blood sugar levels followed by quick declines. The fluctuating pattern of these dietary choices can make you feel more distressed afterward.

Foods that contain high amounts of fiber, healthy fats, and protein maintain steady energy levels while benefiting brain chemistry. Nutritional choices such as whole grains, fruits, leafy green vegetables, nuts, and fish fall into this category. These foods provide physical health benefits and regulate emotions while reducing stress and improving focus.

Individuals who follow balanced eating patterns show reduced rates of anxiety and depression. Food cannot solve all mental health problems, but it represents a significant component in maintaining mental wellness.

Signs That Nutrition Might Be Affecting Mental Health

The effects of poor nutrition can manifest in ways that are not immediately apparent. Physical signs of unhealthy nutrition include frequent sickness and extreme tiredness, yet many indicators show up as mental or emotional symptoms. This list presents warning signs for students and their supporters to identify nutritional issues.

Trouble concentrating in class or while studying

Persistent tiredness and low energy levels despite adequate sleep.

Increased feelings of sadness, irritability, or hopelessness

Constant cravings for sugar or junk food

Difficulty managing stress or emotions

Dietary factors might cause the combination of these problems, but poor eating habits alongside diet can make nutrition a significant contributing element.

What Students Can Do to Improve Their Diet and Mood

You can improve your well-being without following an ideal diet. Tiny, regular modifications can lead to significant benefits.

The first step toward better nutrition is choosing full meals instead of snacks. Incorporate protein, whole grains, and vegetables into at least two daily meals – swap soda for water or herbal tea. Always have nuts, fruit, or yogurt as healthy alternatives to chips. These basic actions can stabilize your mood while helping you better manage everyday stress.

Don’t underestimate the power of breakfast. Skipping breakfast saves time but frequently results in decreased concentration and negative mood changes. A fast serving of oatmeal or peanut butter toast provides substantial energy.

Explore your campus food programs or grocery cost-saving apps when shopping or cooking becomes challenging because of limited time or budget. Universities are increasingly understanding the significance of mental health and nutrition working together.

Food for Thought: A Better Diet Means a Better Mind

Our society views food primarily as a means to sustain our energy levels. Students find food to be fundamental because it supports their learning process and aids them in growing while handling life’s obstacles. A nutritious diet promotes physical health and mental wellness.

While therapy and stress management play key roles in mental health, they are only part of the whole picture. Proper nutrition provides essential building blocks for brain functionality. Healthy eating should not be seen as a burden but rather as a way to care for yourself.
