Yep, he was really barefoot. My daughter was with me and asked if Amish people wear shoes. I assured her they did when required, but probably prefer to feel to the soil and grass on their feet when they can.

And the guy who met you… really barefoot? WOW! Thanks for sharing this experience! We don't have an Amish community anywhere near where I live! 🙁
