Our Favorite Ways to Experience Fall in Cadillac, MI

Take A Color Driving Tour

Color driving tours are kinda the gold standard when it comes to fall fun and that is no exception in the Cadillac area.

The region has two fall color routes that you don’t want to miss. Each route is a perfect day trip that allows you to explore Cadillac and the greater area to find some of our best hidden gems.

The in-town Cadillac route is an 18-mile loop that takes you around both Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. Did you know we had two lakes in the heart of downtown Cadillac?

Before you begin your fall color drive grab a cup of coffee at one of the many local coffee shops and then start your tour at Cadillac Commons. Drive along the lakes and part of the Manistee National Forest before arriving in “Cadillac West.” There you can visit Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and take a jaunt on the Heritage Nature Trail. The route will loop you back into downtown Cadillac in time for lunch and shopping.

The Around Cadillac color tour loops total about 200 miles. There is both an east and west segment that will wind you to scenic overlooks, beautiful hiking trails, fall canopies, farm markets and boutiques.

The western side of the loop will have you stopping at seven overlooks and take you past a few farms and hiking trails while the eastern loop is focused on the agricultural aspects of the region.

Where To Have Family Fun Down On The Farm

Dick Family Farm in McBain is a centennial dairy farm open on Fridays and Saturdays in October that offers lots of family fun in the fall. Pick out the perfect pumpkin from over 20 varieties, explore the Pure Michigan corn maze, climb the hay bale mountain, play in the corn bin, and pet the animals. Homemade donuts and cider are also available!

Brinks Family Creamery located in McBain is a 4th generation farm, creating premium milk and cheese products directly from the Grade A milk of top quality, registered Holsteins. They also have play areas for kids and animals to pet along with a fully stocked bakery. If that is too far of a trip for you, keep your eyes peeled as they have just opened a frozen yogurt shop in downtown Cadillac, Benny’s Froyo and Mo!

This next stop truly has something for everyone. Maple Leaf Farm and Creamery in Falmouth is an artisan goat milk creamery & farm, take an afternoon to discover their on-site classes and demonstrations, to educational activities and camps, festivals and gift shops, hayrides, wagon rides and more! No shortage of fun on this fully operational farm. This is one of our favorite farms to visit. Throughout the year you’re always welcome to visit the goats, pssss, spring is great for that!

Norman’s Farm in Tustin is a small family owned farm in operation since 1889! You will find a variety of pumpkins, squash, gourds, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes on site. This farm yields not only quality produce and livestock, but also seven generations of agricultural knowledge and ability.

The Hudson Farm in Cadillac features seasonal events and a gift shop cleverly named “Ewe-niquely U”, with plenty of fun activities to explore. Their Fall Festival entertainment includes: feeding & petting farm animals, wagon rides, hay maze, free crafts, pumpkins, hot & cold refreshments and much more!

The mission at 3rd Day Farm in Lake City is clear -“learn, love, & give…REAL food!”. You can visit with the alpacas, baby doll sheep, Lim-flex cattle, chickens, and pigs, tour the greenhouses, or request a fresh salad blend be cut for your dinner.

The Poplar Pines farm in Mesick produces a variety of farm fresh organic duck eggs, chicken eggs, and home baked breads, available on a first come, first serve basis at their seasonal farm stand. Other fall activities on site include a petting zoo, sandbox, playground, and hayrides with cider and donuts!

Hikers on the Hunt for Fall Colors

While Cadillac offers some remarkable driving tours that show off the best color, some prefer to view the scene on foot.

Our favorite hike is at the High Rollway on the Manistee River. Incredible views with an easy walk, pack a picnic and stay awhile. The color views are amazing from here. This article shares more about the high rollaway plus four additional hiking trails to check out!

ORV Fall Trail Fun

Cadillac and the surrounding region has 120 miles of off-road vehicle trails along 10 ORV trail systems, which makes it a great way to get deep in the woods and see fall colors missed by many.

Cadillac also has new wayfinding signs making your adventure in the woods easier to navigate. There are also a number of outfitters in the area to rent an ORV from so you don’t have to own one to get out on the trails.

We went with Bigfoot Epic Adventures, because of course we did, but the Cadillac CVB has a list of rentals listed so you can find the one that works best for your up north adventure.

Fall River Floats 

Soak up all that the fall season has left to offer by taking to one of the Cadillac Area’s two magnificent rivers. The Big Manistee River, a wide, smooth flowing river with many great places to get out and enjoy picnics, camping, and fishing; or give the Pine River a try, more narrow, swift and a true challenge. Can’t make a float this fall? No worries, come on up this winter and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with a winter rafting trip on the Pine or nearby East Jordan. It’s our favorite winter activity.

Fall Fishing in Northern Michigan

The section of the Big Manistee River below Tippy Dam is designated a National Scenic River. The changing colors of the leaves and wildlife visible along the river banks as autumn moves into early winter make for a beautiful float. In the fall, the Steelhead are feeding heavily for the onset of winter; you will also find Coho Salmon and Brown Trout. Read more about it here.

While you’re in that area be sure to check out the Little Mac Footbridge on the Manistee River Trail near Hodenpyl Dam.

KISS Fans

One of the most unexpected discoveries in Cadillac is the KISS memorial at Cadillac High School. You can read about the why it exists here, but it’s definitely worth a stop for 70s Rock n Roll fans and all those who appreciate some seriously good hard rock music.

Local fans are excited and looking forward to the next season, but the team immediately loses the first two games. Now, that’s not looking good for the coaches, Dave Brines and Jim Neff, so they came up with a plan.

They were going to play KISS music before practice and before games to energize the players before they headed out on the field and it worked!

But why KISS? Well, assistant coach Jim Neff, a Rock and Roll fan, was put in charge of picking the music and he “chose a new and outrageous band — KISS. They were wild, bold, and loud. Plus, their name invoked an old football credo — Keep It Simple Stupid.”

Who knew KISS could be so inspiring? The coaches took a chance and it worked. The players began dominating the field and won seven games and a conference co-championship.

It wasn’t long before the band heard about their music inspiring a small town football team to go all the way to the playoffs and they instantly adopted the Vikings as their team.

Now, die hard KISS fans are saying, of course it worked, but back in the 70s you can imagine some of the push back the coaches would have received from the community. However, at the end of the day they couldn’t deny that the music worked.

Jim Neff kept in contact with KISS after the winning streak and was the catalyst behind getting the band to come to town to be part of the homecoming parade and perform at the gym. Everyone got into the KISS spirit and local stores probably sold out of makeup as the entire town showed up with faces painted to match KISS.

After the concert the band left town in 70’s rock star fashion via a helicopter from the football field. Iconic move.

The legacy of the band playing in Cadillac has lived on and is a story that continues to be shared by locals and KISS fans alike. Many KISS fans make the pilgrimage to Cadillac to see the KISS monument that stands in front of the football field that started it all.

We are rolling up on the 50th anniversary of this epic event and plans are being put in place to make it a weekend to remember. KISS fans will want to start making plans to visit Cadillac in October 2025. Stay tuned for more information. I’ll share it as it becomes available.

There is no other place in the US where KISS showed up for homecoming and performed a concert for locals. And for that reason a trip to Cadillac is an absolute must for KISS fans.

We’re sharing all the best activities on Mackinac Island plus many of them are FREE! 

Start packing because there are many things to do on Mackinac Island and you won’t want to put it off another summer!

Although, fair warning, the island is busy during the summer months. If you can visit this unique place in the fall during the week it will be a bit quieter.

Grab a ferry in either St. Ignace (in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) or in Mackinaw City (in Michigan’s lower peninsula).  Both offers multiple ferries a day to and from the island.

You’ll want to plan, at a minimum, an entire day trip to the island, but if it’s possible plan at least a 2-day, 1-night visit. I recently stayed for 3-nights and wanted to stay longer.

The island life is definitely for me 😉

Visit Fort Mackinac

Even if you aren’t a history buff you are going to enjoy a visit to this very historical site.

Make a day of it at Fort Mackinac while you learn about life during the early days on the island and the history of the fur trade. Arrive early and ask if you can fire the 9 am canon, have lunch at the tearoom which offers excellent views of downtown Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac.

The island has miles of excellent hiking trails.

The best part? Since you are surrounded by water it’s hard to get lost. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes.In the early summer look for Lady’s Slipper and Trillium in bloom.

Walk past the back entrance to the Fort, take a right on the road that leads to the Fort administrative offices and then veer to the left onto the hiking trails.

You’ll pass the Somewhere In Time Gazebo, follow the path into the woods to the right.

Continue on and you’ll discover a historic marker with a great overlook of the Straits.

Anne’s Tablet is a tribute to author Constance Fenimore Woolson who spent her childhood summers on the island and became a well-known, early 19th-century author.

Her first published novel, Anne (which is currently FREE on Amazon Kindle), is based on the Island and was published in the late 1800’s.

Visit the Somewhere In Time Movie Locations

It’s a cult classic and fans flock to the island every year to visit the movie locations and attend the Somewhere In Time Festival held at the Grand Hotel.

Located near the Fort Mackinac administrative offices is the gazebo from the movie. A great place to sit a spell.

Enjoy One of the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours

This is a great way to see many of the islands popular sites as well as hear entertaining stories and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride.

You can pick up a carriage tour on Main Street as soon as you get off the ferry.

Visit Fort Holmes

Fort Holmes is part of the Fort Mackinac Historic State Parks and is located on the highest point on the island. It has recently been restored and provides an excellent view of the island.

This is an island favorite. Arch Rock is lovely any time of day but at sunrise, it’s quiet and has a pretty golden glow.

Rainy day? No worries, head over to Mission Point Resort and introduce the kids to classic arcade games and play some video games.

Find Sunset Rock

There is a trail behind the Inn at Stonecliffe that winds its way through the woods and eventually leads you to Sunset Rock.

From here you can see the mighty Mackinac Bridge and watch as the sun sets over the Straits.

On Tuesdays during the summer head over to St. Anne’s church and get your do si do on as your swing your partner round and round on the church deck.

Wawashkamo Golf Course for a History Lesson

Wawashkamo is an interesting blend of history and today.

It is Michigans oldest, unchanged, private nine-hole golf course. It was founded in 1898 and that way you see it today is mostly how it was over a century ago.

This is also the land of the great 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island. This was once a farmer’s field where American soldiers attempted and failed to drive the British from their hill.

When you tee off at the first hole you are teeing off on historic ground.

Paddle the Straits

Great Turtle Kayak Tours offers two locations and many tour options for getting out on the water to explore the Straits of Mackinac.

The first option is to take a tour from the mainland before heading to the island. Go the Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City and enjoy a paddle to the Fort and under the mighty Mackinac Bridge. That is definitely a bucket list item.

Once you are on the island join Great Turtle Kayak Tours for a paddle to famous Mackinac Island landmarks. SUP is also available.

TIP: Be sure to check out the crystal clear waters of the Straits!

Take a Stroll Around Sugar Loaf Rock

This 75-foot tall rock stands strong in the middle of the island. View it from afar to appreciate its beauty and then take a walk around it to appreciate its immense size.

There are approximately 13 fudge shops on Mackinac Island and they all offer free samples of fudge.

Watch the fudge makers twists and flip hot fudge on a marble slab while nibbling on their delightful creations.

This is great to do right before leaving the island so you can find your favorite flavors and take home a couple of tastes of the island for family and friends.

Fudge is the best selling souvenir on the island.  (Start and end at Ryba’s….just sayin’)

If fudge isn’t your thing there is no shortage of ice cream on the island.

Play Golf

There are three golf courses on the island. One at the Grand Hotel with a front and back 9, a historic 9-hole course at Wawashkamo, and an 18-hole putting course at Mission Point.

Discover New Artists 

The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, a part of the Mackinac State Historic Parks is located on Main St. at the east edge of Marquette Park and offers art that is centered around Mackinac Island.

The great lawn at Mission Point is a great kite flying location as is Marquette Park in front of Fort Mackinac.

Go to Church

The Little Stone Church was built of local fieldstones in 1904.

There are stained glass windows in the front of the church that depict the history of Mackinac Island. Stop and read the historical marker for more history when you visit.

This library may have the best waterfront view on the entire island.

A small deck on the back of the library invites you to sit and enjoy a book while watching freighters and ferries pass by.

Be sure to check the used book sale section at the library to buy a book to take home or enjoy while you are there.

See Skull Cave

A small squat-ish style cave that was once believed to be the burial ground for Native Americans and was a hiding spot for a fleeing fur trader.

Today the cave is free of bones and visitors are asked to view the cave from behind the fence and not try to climb inside.

Enjoy A Concert In The Park

Every Thursday at 6:30 PM from June 27- August 22 in Marquette Park you can enjoy music in the great outdoors. No worries if it rains, the concert moves indoors to the Center for the Arts at Mission Point.

Take a Ghost Tour

The Haunts of Mackinac offers a look at the eery side of Mackinac Island with stories of days gone by. The walking tour is around downtown and is an easy pace for all fitness levels.

This annual event is held at the oldest continuously used baseball field in the state. Fort Mackinac Never Sweats will compete against Rochester Grangers at the game in July.

Santa is so busy on Christmas Eve, his visiting hours will end at 3 pm. Bronner’s closes at 4 pm on Christmas Eve.

Please note that many children wish to see Santa on Saturdays and Sundays. Guests should anticipate a wait. 

Visit The Silent Night Memorial Chapel

A exact replica of the Silent Night Memorial Chapel located in Salzburg, Austria. That chapel had been built on the site of the St. Nicholas Church where “Silent Night,” the most well-known Christmas carol, was first sung in 1818. 

When Wally Bronner, founder of Bronner’s, visited in 1976 he became enthralled with the chapel and worked to receive permission to duplicate the chapel.

Bronner’s replica of the chapel was completed in November 1992.

It is open daily during store hours for visitation and meditation.

Grab Lunch or Snack at Bronner’s

The store features a delightful café where visitors can savor hot cocoa, freshly baked cookies, and other tasty goodies.

It’s a great place to rest and recharge before continuing your Bronner’s experience.

Festive Light Display

Drive along 25 Christmas Lane, Bronner’s 1/2-mile long scenic drive each evening starting at dusk and enjoy the glow of over 100,000 outdoor Christmas lights illuminating the grounds.

Here’ you’ll see animated light displays, iconic photo stops and Bronner’s giant outdoor Santa that towers 17 feet and the giant snowman that is 15 feet tall.

Note that the lights turn off at Midnight.

Take A Snowshoe Hike

Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located at Mitchell State Park between Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell, offers Friday night lantern lit hikes from the end of December until the snow melts.

If you don’t have snowshoes, you can borrow a pair from the center to walk the 2.5-mile Heritage Nature Trail. The lantern lit trail leads you through woodlands and marsh.

Beyond the nature center, you’ll find thousands of acres to explore in the Huron-Manistee National Forests. From marked trails to backcountry exploration there is no shortage of space to take a snowshoe hike. 

If you don’t have your own gear you can rent snowshoes at Caberfae Ski Resort, located about 30 minutes west of Cadillac. There are marked trails available to use at the ski resort, the 10-mile MacKenzie Trail that starts at the resort’s base and is a favorite. 

Float the Pine River – Yes, in the Winter

Even in the winter, you can enjoy the rivers near Cadillac. Head over to Pine River Paddlesports and enjoy a leisurely 75-minute float down the river with a guide.

No special equipment needed. Simply suit up in your normal outdoor winter gear, grab 4-5 of your friends and get ready for an amazing adventure.

If you are a very confident paddler and have a lot of experience on the water, you can have a guide float in a kayak alongside your raft.

Otherwise, the guide will join you on the raft and help ensure that everyone safely makes it down the river.

Winter rafting is one of our favorite winter activities. We’ve haven’t floated the Pine River yet, but we’ve been on the Jordan River in East Jordan several times and loved it. 

Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, AND Cross-Country Skiing

There are two places to go downhill skiing in the Cadillac area. About 30 minutes west of Cadillac you’ll find Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort ,and about 25 minutes east of Cadillac you can ski at Missaukee Ski Mountain.

Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort

With ski runs, a ski school, terrain parks, a rental shop, and lodging, Caberfaehas one of the highest vertical drops in Northern Michigan at 485’ vertical feet, 27 runs, 3 peaks, 5 lifts, and night skiing throughout the season. Fun fact – Caberfae is the second oldest ski resort in Michigan (and the first major ski resort in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula) and one of the oldest in the Midwest.

The independently-owned resort has a state-of-the-art snow making operation and has a backcountry terrain area for those who enjoy breaking their own trail. There is also cross country skiing available at the resort.

Caberfae has also updated many of their buildings and amenities include: 

• ski-in/ski-out accessibility
• outdoor heated pool/hot tub
• fire pit
• on-site dining

Caberfae is a great winter hot spot in the Cadillac region at the first signs of snow, through the last 40-degree days in the spring. 

If you’re in the Cadillac area to ski AND snowmobile reserve a cabin across the road at Coyote Crossing Resort. They are a great staging area for snowmobiling, have individual cabins, an on-site restaurant and bar AND it’s a quick 5-minute drive from the slopes.

Missaukee Ski Mountain

The Missaukee Ski Mountain is open on the weekends and all of Christmas break, depending on snow conditions. It offers a bunny mound, beginner runs, intermediate slopes, expert challenge, and moguls galore with 3 tow ropes.

The mountain also has more than five miles of cross-country trails. Snowboarding is also welcome at the Mountain. If you don’t own ski equipment, no worries, the mountain has lots of downhill and cross country ski equipment for you to rent.

If you want to take out your own sleds or tubes, a sledding hill is available for your enjoyment at no cost. When you’ve had enough fun or need to warm up, stop in the lodge which offers a comfortable common area and public restrooms.

Enjoy some hot chocolate, coffee, or soft drink or a bite to eat and head back out to the slopes.

Cross-Country Skiing Cadillac Pathway 

Starting from the Cadillac Pathway trailhead you can choose distances from just over 1 mile to as many as 11 miles. There are varying levels of terrain encompassing easy, intermediate, and advanced.

The trails that are east of Seeley Rd (nearest the trailhead) will offer up easy to intermediate XC ski trails.

Once you cross Seeley Rd and head west the terrain becomes much hillier for the intermediate to advanced skier. There will be something to please the entire family.

We recommend that only XC skiers use the main Cadillac Pathway to preserve the tracks for those two skinny long boards. In perfect conditions, the trails are groomed twice a week.

Ice Skate

The Wexford Civic Center (locally known as “The Wex”) offers Open Skate on most Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm-4pm during the ice skating season (please check ice calendar for possible conflicts). Cost is only $3 per person including skate rental!

Winter Fat Tire Biking

Fat bikers are going to love riding the trails in Cadillac. The Cadillac Pathway Winter Sports Trail Network (WST) is perfect for both activities.

During the winter a 3-foot-wide base is groomed for you to use. During the winter season trails are groomed daily. The trailhead is located at the Cadillac Pathways Seeley Road location. 

You can do the full 11-mile loop or a nice 5-mile loop (aka Polar Bear Loop) that leaves from trailhead and does not cross Seeley Rd.

The terrain on the east side of Seeley Rd. is for beginners and intermediate level. Once you cross Seeley Rd it is for the intermediate to advance level. Nothing too technical just some hefty climbs.

The trails are easy to follow. Simply follow the groomed path. There are trail maps at key intersections.

Keep in mind there are a few spots where the WST crosses the XC ski trail – PLEASE yield to the XC skiers.

Avid cyclists with a competitive streak may want to compete in the 10 and 21 Mile Fat Bike Race Feb. 24 at Cadillac Pathway. In only its second year, this Cadillac’s first and Northern Michigan’s newest fat bike race.

Snowmobiling

The Cadillac area has a regional snowmobile trail network that spreads through the region’s state and National Forest. With more than 200 miles of groomed trails you’re in for a great day of fun in any direction you’d like to go.  

A great place to stop while you’re out is the Boon Country Store for gas and snacks.

If you need to rent a snowmobile, there are 3 outfitters:

• Greater North Powersports & Rentals
• Westside Rec. Rentals 
• K&R Outfitters
  • K&R also offers guided snowmobile tours. 

If you have your own equipment, you can access the National Forest trails from any one of these staging areas:

• Cadillac West Area: 33 Rd*
• White Pine Trail Staging Area off 44 Rd
• Caberfae Area: 13 Rd (off W M55)
• Boon Area: By Boon Grocery (off 25 Mile Road)

Ice Fishing

By January, the winter season should be in full swing, and the ice should be thick enough for fishing.

Ice shanties can be seen dotting the frozen Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Both lakes are known for pike, walleye, bluegill, and crappie. 

By the way, Pilgrim Village is the go-to place for all things ice fishing in the area.

Winter Events

I love that the winter activities in Cadillac aren’t taking place only outside. There are plenty of indoor opportunities as well. 

From Rock Star Bing0 (my fave!) and Trivia Nights to live music and special events. Check out all the happenings here so you don’t miss a thing while in town.

One, not to miss, event in the area is the Midwest Snow Kite Jam, which is an awesome specator sport as well! It’s being held in Cadillac in February 2024

Where To Shop, Dine, and Stay in Downtown Cadillac

Cadillac has a pedestrian-friendly main street with some to the best places to shop and eat. If you have littles you have to check out the nicest toy store, Toy Town and do not leave town without stopped in at the Sweet Shop.

You can find a number of other suggestions of where to shop and dine here. Downtown parking is free!

For lodging, Coyote Crossing is the perfect place to stay for all the outdoor winter sports. Of course, Caberfae Ski Resort also has lodging.

I feel like Michigan is a hidden gem when it comes to fall color tours. The state is often overlooked in lists of “best places to experience fall color” but locals know that color change in Michigan is some of the best in the country.

One of the best places to experience that color change is “up north” in Cadillac. However, you’ll want to make those plans now because the color season is short and usually lasts just a couple weeks.

Based on this map (shown above) it looks like the best time to visit is going to be the last week of September and the first few weeks of October.

Four Epic Ways to Experience a Fall Color Tour in the Greater Cadillac Area

Between the Huron Manistee Forest, farmlands, rivers, and lakes you’ll have numerous opportunities to enjoy fall colors. 6

Plus, a color tour in the Cadillac Area doesn’t mean just sitting in the car and driving down the road. We take it up a notch here and suggest experiencing the colors at a different pace by paddling rivers, hiking trails, and jumping on an ATV from Bigfoot Epic Adventures.

There are 200 miles of fall color to explore here, but after decades of living here, I have the inside scoop on some places that you must visit for the best color tour experience.

FOUR WAYS TO EXPERIENCE FALL COLORS IN THE CADILLAC AREA

1. Follow the map and drive the Eastern and Western Loops.
2. Hike the trails.
3. Paddle the rivers.
4. Go deep in the woods via ATV/Bigfoot Epic Adventures.

BEST PLACES TO HIKE, PADDLE, ATV IN THE CADILLAC AREA

• Silver Creek Pathway: A 4-mile loop trail along the banks of the Pine River. Offers a beautiful canopy of fall color along a well-marked path. #24 on map
• Manistee River High Rollaway: Short trek to an overlook over the Manistee River near Kingsley. So incredible and one of our favorite stops every fall season. (See photo earlier in the post, not tagged on map). You’ll want to google for directions.
• Chippewa Landing: This has been our go-to for 20+ years and is located just north of Cadillac. We recommend getting in the river at Chase Creek which is about a 2-3 hour float back to Chippewa Landing. That leaves plenty of time for other things. (not tagged on map)
• Bigfoot Epic Adventures: Located near Manton, Bigfoot Epic Adventures has plenty of ATVs available for everyone in your party. Ask for suggestions on where to see the best colors and they’ll get you there. The entire area is packed with a variety of trees so you’re sure to see some amazing colors while out exploring. (not tagged on map)

BEST PHOTO/INSTAGRAM SPOTS IN THE CADILLAC AREA

• Little Mac Suspension Bridge: If you only have time for one photo stop make it this one. A 245-foot wooden suspension bridge spans across the Manistee River at the south end of the Hodenpyl Dam and is also part of the North Country Trail. On my map app I enter “Little Mac Foot Bridge” (in Manistee County) and it usually brings up the driving route. This one is an absolute MUST! #18 on map.
• Sherman Hill along M-37: Just south of 10 1/2 Rd, the lookout from M-37 across the Manistee River Basin is spectacular. #16 on map.
• Cooley Bridge and Low Bridge: Along M-55 at the Pine River crossing Walk the boardwalk under the Cooley Bridge and capture the scenic fall color along the Pine River. #21 on map.

BEST PLACES TO EAT ALONG THE COLOR TOUR

• Maple Leaf Farm: It’s all about goats, milk, cheese, soaps, and life on the farm. Visit their Facebook page for the latest events, classes, and products they are currently offering. #5 on the above map.
• 2 The Moon Bakery: If you’re headed out on the Eastern loop grab a coffee and a treat here. Located in Lake City the source the freshest grown and sustainable products to create delicious food and drink. #7 on the above map.
• Coyote Crossings: Grab a bite to eat and plan to make this your hub for your up north adventure. More no this below.

WHERE TO STAY IN CADILLAC, MICHIGAN

You’re going to want to make tracks to Coyote Crossings just west of Cadillac. They offer 10 deluxe cabins, and some are even pet friendly so Fido can join the fun.

Each cabin has two bedrooms with a full bath, living room, kitchen, Wi-Fi, and a patio and can sleep up to 6.

Coyote Crossings makes the perfect hub to your color tour giving you quick access to all four ways to experience fall colors up north.

There is a bar and grill onsite offering up some delicious bites. We’ve never been disappointed by the service or food when we stop in. Plus, there is always a great line up of cold beer on tap.

Keep Coyote Crossings in mind for other seasons as well. Their summer music nights (an absolute must) and, if you love the snow, they are located right along the snowmobile trails making them the perfect spot for winter fun.

WHERE TO SHOP IN DOWNTOWN CADILLAC, MICHIGAN

I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend spending some time in our downtown area. There are several fabulous boutiques, coffee shops and places to eat. Knowing that time is limited here are a few we recommend visiting:

• Chunky Bear Coffee: It has that whole “Friends” vibe going for it as well as excellent coffee. It’s my normal go-to for coffee when I’m in town. Lucky for you, there are a number of other coffee shops as well. I say try them all and find your favorite.
• Sweet Shop: Cadillac’s original handmade candy shop has been creating sweet treats for three generations. You can’t leave without trying a “snowbird.”
• Charming North: I think you’ll be surprised by this well curated boutique. From fashion to home decor, they offer a bit of something for everyone.
• Serendipity: Another local favorite, Serendipity offers a nice selection of women’s clothing, accessories, and gifts. The staff is great at helping you find the perfect item but are also content to let you browse at your leisure.
• The Cozy Company: I love the eclectic collection of items available here. From clothes and leather goods to gift items and home decor. It’s always a treat to step inside and see what’s new.
• Threads North: This is our go to place for outdoor apparel. They have all the great name brand items and maybe even a few that will be new to you. Be sure to stop in to update your outdoor wardrobe!

BONUS STOP FOR BRUNCH AND MORE FALL COLORS

One of the things I adore about small towns is that they are usually hiding a few awesome things, but those are often overlooked because they aren’t located in a “big city.”

Brunch at 876 Baldwin in Baldwin, Michigan is one of those things.

In my opinion, they offer up the best brunch in the northwest region of Michigan with a diverse selection of culinary delights.

The North African Shashuka is my favorite dish to order, and the heat level can be adjusted if spicy isn’t your thing. If you’re more of a sweet breakfast person I’m going to recommend the Brie Stuffed French Toast.

These recommendations are from their summer menu which may change by the time color season rolls around, but hopefully those two options make the cut on the fall menu.

Honestly, this is THE place for an amazing meal to wrap up your weekend. Open on Sunday from 10am-4pm.

Of course, between Cadillac and Baldwin you’ll enjoy gorgeous falls colors during your drive so it’s a win-win situation.

If your idea of a great time with your friends is a day at the spa then a day at the Lakeside Spa and Salon will be paradise for all of you.

These trails offer an unforgettable off-road experience for both novices and seasoned enthusiasts alike.

Northern Michigan ORV trails, plus my bucket list item to spot Bigfoot at least once in my life, led me to jump at the opportunity to go out an explore the Northern Michigan ORV trails with none other than Bigfoot Epic Adventures, a fitting match for my aspirations.

If you’re wondering how to have an adventure on the ORV trails in the Cadillac area keep reading and see how our adventure turned out. 

Luckily, it’s very easy to replicate.

How To Have An ORV Adventure On The Cadillac Area Trails

WHERE TO START YOUR ORV ADVENTURE

We arrive at Bigfoot Epic Adventures bright and early on a Sunday morning ready for this adventure.

Geared up with a helmet and safety goggles we’re shown to the powerful Razr Side by Side we’ll be using for the day.

Once we secured our lunch tote and cooler in the back, we set off to seek Bigfoot while discovering the ORV trails surrounding our hometown.

DRIVING THE CADILLAC AREA ORV TRAILS

The new ORV we are driving easily makes its way through sandy curves and across the sometimes rough terrain.

The tires eat up the dirt like they missed breakfast and lunch and are starving.

Again, we ask ourselves why we don’t own an ORV. 

The answer was pretty clear, cost justification. I travel a lot and wouldn’t be home nearly enough to use it.

However, we’re content with renting, especially now that there is a local outfitter near Cadillac.

Kicking it up a bit on the straight away we race through the forest with no specific destination in mind, but always having an eye out for any movement in the forest (hey, you never know where Bigfoot could be lurking).

RIVER VIEWS ALONG THE TRAILS

Eventually, we slow it down as the terrain changes and we make our way to an incredible overlook of the Manistee River.

We didn’t even know this overlook existed and we’ve lived in the area for decades.

This overlook can be accessed with an SUV or Truck as it’s not very far off the main road, but there are no signs or indications on the main road that it is there, it really is a “if you know you know” spot.

Crossing the main road, we head down a non-vehicle accessible trail that starts out well but narrows down considerably.

It’s easy for the side-by-side though and before we know it, we’re enjoying another great view of the river.

Our small cooler bounces around in the back, but we decide not to have an impromptu picnic at this viewpoint due to our oversight in packing bug spray.

If we stay, we become lunch which is never much fun so off we go to see what else we can find.

BRIDGE CROSSING ALONG THE CADILLAC AREA ORV TRAIL

We decide to head towards Fife Lake and eventually come to an old metal bridge that spans the Manistee River.

The bridge may look a little questionable, but you’ll be fine. Just take your time when getting onto and off the bridge. 

We continue to explore the northern Michigan ORV trails and surrounding scenery.

FAVORITE TRAIL SPOT AND WILDLIFE SPOTTING

Our favorite spots along the trails were always the ones with water views. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to cross and ride along the Manistee River.

Unfortunately, we never spot Bigfoot, but we do see a deer, so we’re calling it a win.

NOT GETTING LOST ON THE TRAILS

Plus, we never got lost (if you know me that’s a huge win!). This was mostly due to the fantastic GPS system on our Razr.

No GPS on your Razr? No worries!  The Cadillac Area Visitor Bureau is installing way finding signs along most of the trail system in the area making it even easier to get out and explore.

Before we know it, hours have passed, and we have to make our way back to the Bigfoot Epic Adventures headquarters to turn in our equipment.

You’d think that a town of around 10k wouldn’t have many options, but Cadillac finally nails it when it comes to providing an excellent caffeine fix. I say finally because as a 30-year resident of this small town it’s taken a VERY long time to have a nice selection of coffee houses in town.

Note, I adore independent coffee shops so that is all I’m sharing here, and they are the ones I highly recommend trying.

Looking for a Central Perk vibe? Want to have a great place to meet friends? Chunky Bear Coffee Roasters in downtown Cadillac is THE place to go.

Seriously, this is the coffee shop I’ve always dreamed of having and now it exists.

From the cozy seating arrangements to the cool vibe and decor, to the amazing coffee options this is the place for you.

Be sure to grab some Chunky Bear roasted coffee and a sweatshirt before you leave and if you really want to treat yourself get a salted caramel cookie to go with your coffee.

Summer Hours – they are open 7 days a week.

Coffee Spot For Work

Owl Eye Coffee Roasters, also in downtown Cadillac, has grown from a small roaster where you could stop in to pick up bags of roasted coffee to a full-service coffee spot.

They opened pre pandemic as the first coffee roaster in town and I’ve not been disappointed with any of their coffee I’ve tried.

Owl Eye is the perfect location for a change of office view for a while. I mean, why work from an office or home when you can work at Owl Eye?

Closed Sunday.

Coffee Spot When Camping

Cadillac is very well known for Mitchell State Park which just underwent a massive renovation to its bathhouses and resurfacing the roadways.

What makes the state park so unique is that it is on Lake Cadillac and right across the road from Lake Mitchell. The lakes are connected by a canal so if you have a boat or a kayak you can easily enjoy both lakes.

What does that have to do with coffee? Well, if you’re camping at Mitchell State Park right across the street at the intersection of M-115 and M-55 you’ll find Michigan Coffee Company.

They also have good sandwiches and baked goods. Open 7 days a week.

Note, if you’re camping and looking for other food/snack ideas be sure to grab a pasty from Mr. Foisies and/or ice cream from Cone Lickers. Both are walkable from campground!

Coffee On The Go

Get your independent coffee fix quickly by visiting one of these drive through locations.

If I’m not mistaken Cadillac Java was one of the very first independent coffee places in town. They started with their location near downtown and expanded to add another drive through coffee joint near Lake Cadillac (aka Cadillac West).

Fun fact, you can also get ice cream at Cadillac Java making it the perfect stop when you have a craving for both.

Both locations are open 7 days a week

We recommend purchasing tickets online, but they are also available at the door. Depending on how busy they are you may have to wait until a time slot is open.

Tour groups shouldn’t be any larger than 10 people unless it’s private.

Speaking of a private group, this would be a fantastic event to share with your group of friends. Invite all your besties to join you and make some epic memories while capturing some great photos.

You’ll find a number of story boards including some of the people behind the scenes, bios about each character, and the who dated whom timeline was pretty epic.

The Friends Experience is so well done and there are hidden gems and fun facts all throughout. 

You’ll really want to take your time and explore each area as you move through.

• • Wednesdays: 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (last entry)
  • Thursdays and Fridays: 12 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (last entry)
  • Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. (last entry)
  • Sundays: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (last entry)
  • Guided Group tickets start at 9:30am on Saturdays and Sundays.

Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Guests 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years old. Children 3 and younger don’t need a ticket when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
