The holidays are approaching us quickly which means holiday food, Christmas cookies, Thanksgiving pies and many more delicious foods that are enjoyable going down but don’t help with eating healthy. I know from personal experience that trying to eat healthy throughout the holidays is probably one of the hardest things to do. It’s too easy to cave and indulge in all those tasty treats, but maybe with a few healthy eating tips for the holidays, we can all get through the next two months without gaining any weight.

Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays

Don’t Restrict Yourself–I have found that I do the worst when I try to restrict myself from having anything that does not fit into my idea of healthy eating so I try not to completely ban all foods around me.

Portion Control–Portion Control is probably the biggest and most important tip that I can give you. I try not to rule out foods completely but instead I like to allow myself to have those foods in very small portions. Sometimes even a bite will cure and cravings I might be having.

Make Substitutes–Another great option is to make substitutions for your favorite foods. For example, cauliflower mashed potatoes instead of real potatoes or make a pumpkin pie but omit the crust to cut down on sugar and carbs.

Know When To Stop–Some people like to use the holidays as a “cheat day”. If you are going to take this approach I still recommend limiting yourself. Know when to stop so it doesn’t lead to a snowball effect of bad eating.

Keeping a  healthy eating state of mind is hard enough on a day to day basis let alone when there is a whole bunch of delicious foods surrounding you. These tips usually help me through the holiday season and I hope they are helpful for you as well.
