California may be known as the Sunshine State, but don’t let this name fool you. Some of the best activities to do around this west coast destination can be discovered during the colder winter months.

Whether you want to challenge your snowboarding skills around the majestic Lake Tahoe or plan to explore the beautiful festive lights of San Francisco, there is also something exciting to do in California during winter.

While it may be the colder months, don’t think you will need to pack only your warmest clothing. Instead, include comfortable favorites, including Birkenstock NZ, warm sweaters for the evening, and comfortable hiking boots to prepare you for any weather.

Photo by Dennis Yu on Unsplash

California Weather in December

The weather in California in December varies significantly based on where you go. It is one of the coldest months of the year, with daytime temperatures in southern California reaching mid to high 60s and overnight temperatures dropping to roughly 50 degrees. You will have mostly summer days with the occasional rain shower.

Northern California is slightly cooler, with mid-day temperatures in the low 60s and overnight dipping to the 40s. If you choose to head to the mountains, you will be treated to days in the mid-30s, with snow and overnight temperatures dropping into the teens.

California receives its annual rain from November to April, so be prepared for potential changes in your day should the wet weather dampen your plans. But with so much variety, you won’t be short of alternative options throughout your vacation.

Sequoia National Park

Visiting the Sequoia National Park during winter will make you feel like you have stepped into a storybook. The crowds will have begun to thin, and you can easily find yourself hiking through whimsical winter landscapes without another person in sight.

While some facilities are closed during the winter season, there is still plenty to see and do when you visit. You can stop by the iconic General Sherman Tree, hike the 1.2-mile-long Big Trees Trail, go to the top of Moro Park, and explore the towering Sequoia trees along the Alta Trail. Be sure to check ahead for any road closures and chains required to traverse the icy roads safely.

View of Twin Lakes in Mammoth CA by Terri Wertman

Mammoth Lakes

If you are after California’s ultimate winter vacation spot, look no further than Mammoth Lakes. With easy access to both the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, you won’t be short of adventures to embark on this winter.

Take the ski resort’s ski lift to the highest serviced peak in California for miles of skiing and snowboarding landscapes to challenge yourself and enjoy. Some beginner hiking and snowshoeing trails are also accessible during winter, allowing you to take in the unmatched views of sounding lakes and scenery.

If you want to make the most of your hiking opportunity here, be sure to embark on the Hot Creek Geological Site trail, which has a unique combination of snowy landscapes and steaming geysers similar to those found at Yellowstone National Park.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe, located high in the basin of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is guaranteed to be blanketed in shimmering white snow throughout winter. Visitors can rent cross-country skis to take in the fresh mountain air and breath taking vistas.

If you would prefer something less intensive, there are plenty of activities to fill your day, including outdoor ice skating at Northstar, seeing ice sculptures at Heavenly Mountain Resort, or making your way up the mountain in a gondola for panoramic views.

While skiing and snowboarding at any of the many resorts located around the lake are among the most popular winter activities, curling up in your cozy cabin with a steaming hot chocolate while watching the snow fall is a spectacular alternative.

Christmas in San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the best cities in America, and during the winter season, it is a prime holiday location in California. Throughout the city, there is a month-long Christmas celebration known as the Festival of Light. A collection of talented artists come together to install massive light sculptures and installations in prime locations throughout the city.

There are multiple ways to take in the sights and sounds of this incredible celebration. You can choose to take a self-guided walking tour around the city, board a historic fire engine, or hit the water aboard a Christmas cruise in the bay.

Superlatives try to do Alaska justice by capturing its splendor, but they rarely succeed. Nevertheless, it is part of the Ultimate Alaska Wildlife Safari.

It will lead you further from the busiest tourist paths to experience a true Alaskan forest adventure with the assistance of a few of Alaska’s top ecological guides.

On this safari, you will witness the wolf and grizzly bear-filled tundra in Denali’s innermost, most tranquil region.

During a customized chartered boat tour in the Kenai Fjords, you can approach the glacier’s face up close and search for whales and otters amid the icebergs. Witness enormous brown bears fishing for salmon at the Brooks River’s side in Katmai National Park.

Alaska “less explored” has never been larger, wilder, or more captivating than it is now. You must experience its wildlife in their natural habitat yourself!

Here are only a few of the top Alaskan species, along with where you may view them, as it’s impossible to list all of Alaska’s animals in this post.

Wildlife Safari in Alaska – Alaska’s Wildlife in Their Natural Habitat

Brown bears

Brown bears are considerably bigger and distinct than black bears when placed next to one another. The bigger hump on brown bears’ backs and the more petite form of their ears help to differentiate them from black bears, notwithstanding the reality that both species may vary in color from black to light brown.

Brown bears can be found all around Alaska, and it’s easier to identify their absence than their existence.

They’re not to be found on the territory of the Aleutian Chain, the territories of the Bering Sea, or the areas in the Inside Passage, which is located south of Frederick Bay. Taking an Alaska cruise from Seattle will help you spot brown bears in their natural habitat.

Puffins

One of the most recognizable seabird species in shoreline Alaska is the puffin. The black-and-white-colored webbed toes of the tufted puffin and the horned puffin, two species that can be observed in Alaska, have brilliant orange beaks. Due to their coloration, early mariners referred to them as “sea parrots.”

The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, a facility for the assistance, treatment, and training of wildlife, enables visitors to observe puffins along with other seabirds as they plunge to the bottom within their multi-level habitat for food.

Puffins have been constructed for swimming underwater instead of flying. Near the coast, puffins can be seen in Southcentral Alaska, the Inside Passage, and Southwest Alaska.

Caribou

Being a part of the deer family, caribou resemble their near relatives, the reindeer, in appearance. Caribou are prevalent in the tundra and forests of the Arctic, Southcentral, Interior, and Southwest regions of Alaska.

The region is home to 32 separate herds of caribou comprising 750,000 animals, some of which number over 200,000. The finest places to see caribou are the Denali National Park & Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Moose

In Alaska, moose are among the most prevalent picture subjects, and numerous tourists are shocked by their size. Male moose, sometimes known as bulls, can reach weights of 1,600 pounds and heights of over 6.5 feet at the shoulder.

Infants, known as calves, typically walk within a day after birth despite having awkwardly long, spindly legs. When a baby moose is born, it weighs about 30 pounds, but in a period of time they can gain an additional 300 pounds or more.

The largest population of moose in the world may be found in Alaska, which is known as one of the largest species of the deer group.

They have the greatest number in the Southcentral and Interior areas and encompass the Inside Passage all across and up to the Arctic. They can be observed in towns like Anchorage and Fairbanks despite frequently being sighted in remote places.

Humpback whales

In Alaska, humpback whale sightings are frequent during the summer. Humpback whale “flukes,” or tails, exhibit distinctive designs that allow for the identification of specific whales. In order to graze in Alaska’s rich waters of nutrients during the summer, humpback whales commute there from the warm oceans of Hawaii in the winter.

The South Central, Inside Passage, and Southwest divisions’ shoreline regions are the best areas to look for humpback whales.

Dall Sheep

Dall sheep are identified by their curved horns. Dall sheep males, or “rams,” can develop exceptionally massive racks known as “a treasure trove curls,” which are horns that turn completely around. Dall sheep have horns on their heads, while the females (known as ewes) have smaller horns.

They can easily ascend rocky, challenging terrain because of their agility. Along the Seward Highway south of Anchorage is among the most well-known locations for spotting Dall sheep. They can be seen in many other areas but not typically within proximity to a busy road.

Head off the main path to explore the remote wilderness of Alaska (being one of the best destinations in the world) with some of the best wildlife experts in the country in pursuit of excitement, breathtaking scenery, and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife sightings.

While visiting several of Alaska’s well-known tourist destinations, the wildlife route provides a unique and close-up viewpoint. You will definitely encounter these species while on a wildlife expedition in Alaska.

Sharing 8 tips first time visitors to the Las Vegas Strip should know. If you’ve never been to the Vegas Strip before it can be quite the experience.

Maybe a little overwhelming at first, but all in all it can be a really good time. Just asked the millions of people that descend up this 4-mile entertainment district every year.

It must be a good time because most make the trip again and again.

If you’ve been to Vegas you’ll know all this already, but if you haven’t it’s worth a read.

8 Tips First Time Visitors Need To Know About The Vegas Strip

#1. Vegas is bright and loud…..all.the.time.

It will give you instant sensory overload. It is all bright, flashy lights and noise. Lots of lights, lots of noise. Thankfully our room at Cesear’s Palace blocked everything out so I could rest my brain and eyes.

#2. Always pack a party dress

You just never know when you’ll be invited to a really cool party. I received an invite to a nightclub, but I didn’t have any nightclub wear with me.

Quite honestly, I don’t even own party clothes….sigh. I live in the middle of nowhere, no fun nightclubs here. Just good ole bars that require jeans and t-shirts.

#3. The Vegas Strip is expensive.

A couple decades ago this was THE place to go for cheap fun, that is no longer the case. It’s a giant resort on steroids, plan your budget accordingly.

#4. Pack comfy shoes.

Distance in Vegas is an illusion. Buildings appear much closer than they really are.

I think it has something to do with the tremendous size of them, but I’m not really sure.

If you don’t have comfy shoes you are going to be miserable because when you visit Vegas you walk a lot!

Example: We could see the Venetian from our room. It looked like it was just 2-3 blocks away. The reality is that it was right around 1 mile. Comfy walking shoes are a must.

#5. This is where music can live forever.

The music shows in Vegas..oh, my, my, my. Music icons are everywhere. From Jimmie Buffet and Pink to Adele and Bruno Mars. Additionally, there are tribute shows for just about any famous musician, past or present.

#6. Prepare for the unexpected.

There was a massive thunderstorm and lots of rain on the last day of our stay. The news was all fired up about flash flood warnings.

The rain just didn’t want to stop. It did, however, stop long enough in the evening for a helicopter flight over the strip, but that is a different post. Note, pack an umbrella for the next visit.

#7. Smoking is still allowed in all the casinos.

The smoke smell wasn’t completely awful, but it was enough to let you know it was there. The casinos must have phenomenal ventilation to keep it from being overwhelming.

#8. Every casino is unique

Each casino has their own unique attraction to get you through the door. Some are free and some you pay for. There are some free shows nightly (Bellagio fountains at night are awesome!) that you won’t want to miss.

Also, the shopping is off the charts in the casinos. High-end brands line the hallways.

TWO MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR VEGAS

Stay midweek. It’s about 50-75% less for hotel rooms during the week.

Two-nights in sin city is plenty, in my opinion. Shorter stay = less expense.

If you have time be sure to check out some of the great places to visit in Utah!

The first thing that pops to mind when we think of Utah are usually images of vast deserts and Mars-like landscapes and not small towns to visit, but there’s a lot more the Beehive State has to offer visitors!

Home to tons of natural landscapes that range from deserts to sky-high mountains, the Beehive State is also home to lots of small towns and villages that are worth visiting.

Many of these small towns are actually gateways to national parks and ski resorts, but they each hold their own charm and are worth lingering a while in, especially for those who are into history, arts, fine dining, and vintage vibes.

Below is a list of amazing small towns to visit in Utah that absolutely need to make it into your itinerary through the state.

9 Of The Best Small Towns to Visit in Utah

Torrey

Torrey is home to only two hundred residents, making this small town more like a village than anything else.

Torrey acts as the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park, but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Aside from exploring Capitol Reef, Torrey is home to a glorious Southwestern charm.

During the summer months, this small town bursts into life as it hosts the Cowboy Music festival!

Moreover, Torrey has plenty of natural destinations worth checking out aside from Capitol Reef, including canyons, verdant forests, and Thousand Lake Mountain, where you’ll find plenty of hiking trails and alpine lakes.

Brigham City

Located on the skirts of the Wellsville Mountains, Brightman City is a quaint alpine locale that homes beautiful historical buildings backdropped by snow-capped peaks.

Aside from exploring the historical goodness at Brightman’s downtown, a must-see attraction nearby is the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, where you can observe hundreds of different bird species, including American White Pelicans during the summer and Tundra Swans in the fall.

Moab

Moab is Utah’s gateway to the desert and a fantastic place to feel Western vibes like you never have before (in fact, it has been the setting of many Western films over the decades!)

Located close to Canyonlands and Arches national parks as well as the lesser-known Dead Horse Point State Park, desert landscapes reign supreme in and around Moab.

Aside from exploring the nearby parks, make sure you linger in Moab for a while in order to experience its foodie scene as well as check out its fabulous museums.

Panguitch

Founded by Mormon pioneers amid towering mountains and idyllic lakes, a visit to Panguitch will make you feel as though you traveled back in time.

During your time here, you’ll get to spend your days walking amid historic red brick buildings, many of which now host antique shops, cozy cafes, local art galleries, and boutique craft stores, making it a dream for those who love all things creative.

Midway

Tucked away in the Wasatch Mountains, Midway is a perfect destination in Utah to visit no matter the time of the year.

During the winter months, Midway is a go-to for winter sports, including cross-country skiing and snowboarding. In fact, the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics was held here!

Summer brings in tons of other activities, including scuba diving in Homestead Resort, boating at Deer Creek Damn, golfing, swimming, fishing, and more!

Kanab

Set right on the Arizona border, Kanab is often nicknamed “Little Hollywood” because it’s been the setting of many movies, including The Lone Ranger, Planet of the Apes, and Stagecoach.

Moreover, Kanab acts as the perfect place to base yourself in order to explore some of Utah’s most beautiful slot canyons, including Buckskin Gulch and The Wave.

Huntsville

Founded during the 19th century by Jefferson Hunt, a member of the American Mormon Battalion, Huntsville is a gorgeous historic small town that sits amid pristine nature.

To the east of Huntsville, you’ll find a rolling valley that turns into glorious red and yellow tones as fall arrives. To the west, you’ll find the Pineview Reservoir, a place where watersports and recreational activities are held almost year-round.

Moreover, Huntsville is also home to the Snowbasin Resort, the oldest ski resort in Utah and a perfect place to head to during the winter months for some serious fun in the snow adventures!

Park City

Located close to Salt Lake City, Park City acts as the perfect getaway for locals and visitors alike.

While the main attractions at Park City are its ski resorts during the winter months, this small alpine town offers a ton of other interesting things for visitors to do year-round, including fine dining, hotels perfect for staycations, hiking trails galore, and tons of classy bars to spend the night in.

Moreover, Park City is also host to the Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant remained isolated until the very end of the 19th century, when a railway was built to connect it with the rest of the country.

Up to today, this small Utah town has managed to preserve its historical vibes, with tons of centuries-old buildings still dotting its streets.

As you explore its downtown, make sure not to miss out on visiting the Blacksmith Shop and Relic Building, where you’ll get to feel as though you traveled back in time to the town’s golden era!

There’s more to South Dakota than just visiting Mount Rushmore. Rapid City, South Dakota has many beautiful places that you can visit and enjoy.

If you love the outdoors then this is the place for you.

Alan and I drove from Michigan to Rapid City, a trip of 1200 miles each way, and worth every mile.

Of course, the journey is part of the fun and we made a few stops along the way, but the goal was to spend as much time in the Rapid City, on the far western part of South Dakota, area as possible.

But First, A Visit To Badlands National Park

Our first stop was Badlands National Park where we took advantage of the opportunity to camp in the park. As soon as we arrived we started spotting wildlife and I was finally able to check the elusive, to me anyways, bighorn sheep, off my wildlife list.

We pitched our tent at Cedar Pass Campground. While this worked for our brief stay it’s not necessarily one I would recommend.

The location is great, but the bathrooms are wretched.

I may be ok with tent camping but bathrooms/pit toilets need to be in decent shape and these did not even come close.

That is the only downside of camping there though and if you have a self-contained RV you’ll be ok.

The Badlands are incredible and I’m glad we spent a couple of days exploring the area.

You’ll want to stop at the Prairie Dog Village just north of the park entrance on SD-240 and feed the Prairie Dogs.

Buy a bag of peanuts in the store for $1 and have a one of a kind experience.

You’ll also need to swing into Wall, SD, and visit Wall Drugs.

Free water and 5 cent coffee, a T-Rex that will scare the bejesus out of the kids, and so many photos opps you could spend half the day exploring this iconic attraction.

Packing up camp we left the Badlands and wildlife behind and headed to Rapid City.

Here, you’ll find a small-town feel with an abundance of culture and activities.

We spent our time here feeding our need to spend time in the great outdoors.

We’d only been there two days and Alan was already trying to figure out when and how we could make a return trip.

He insists on flying next time.

He’s not as big of a fan of the road trip as I am. 🙂

Here’s what we loved and what you absolutely do not want to miss on your visit to Rapid City, SD.

Visit the Outdoor Campus

This “school” won’t have you learning in the confines of a room with its four corners and walls.

For those who love that outdoors, the Outdoor Campus is for you.

Get hands-on experience in hunting, fishing and other outdoor skills.

A great thing about this campus is the classes are free!

There are more than 1.5 miles of nature trails for you to discover.

There are prairies, wetlands, and streams to explore.

There’s even a 4,600-gallon freshwater aquarium.

Public Art Walk

In downtown Rapid City, there’s also another great way to discover the outdoors of the concrete jungle as well as the nation’s rich history.

Along the streets and sidewalks in the city, you will find life-size bronze statues of American presidents.

So in between, shopping or eating out in the city, you get to learn about men that shaped the nation’s history and their legacy through the “City of Presidents.”

Another outdoor display in the city is the Art Alley located in between 6th and 7th streets.

Get your cameras ready for some brightly colored graffiti murals, pop art, and beautiful artworks of local, as well as visiting artists to Rapid City.

View Wildlife in Custer State Park

We spent an entire day in the area. Custer State Park is about 40 minutes south of Rapid City.

We arrived early in the morning for the best chance of spotting wildlife.

When driving in Custer State Park, instead of the traffic jam you have at home, you might encounter a “Buffalo Jam.”

The park has the largest free-roaming buffalo herds in the country so you would expect to put on your brakes or park your car while you’re surrounded by these buffalos.

Note: Every fall Custer State Park hosts a Buffalo Round-Up event that I’ve heard is fantastic and well worth attending!

Because of the diverse wildlife, this 71, 000-acre State Park and South Dakota have been in the World’s Top 10 Wildlife Destinations.

Some of the many animals that live here include bighorn sheep, antelope, deer, elk, coyote and prairie dogs.

You might also have a close encounter with some “begging” burros. They are adorable.

Drive Needles Highway

We drove the Needles Highway after exploring Custer State Park, so driving South to North. This scenic highway is an absolute must.

High granite “needles” will surround you as you cruise along 14 miles of sharp turns and even low and narrow tunnels including Iron Creek Tunnel and Needles Eye Tunnel.

There are a few turnoff points that allow you to take advantage of the views.

Visit The Presidents at Mount Rushmore

There is plenty of easy parking, thanks to a nice parking ramp, at this National Monument making it an easy walk from the car to the entrance.

The viewing platform is great for a first look at this massive work of art celebrating our founding fathers.

For a closer look take the presidential path to the left of the platform for a different view and a nice walk around the park.

On your way out be sure to stop and buy some ice cream at the concessions and enjoy at one of the many outdoor dining tables.

We bought one small and split it, it’s a nice treat on a hot day.

Explore Wind Cave National Park

Go underground and explore the beautiful formations in Wind Cave National Park, one of the longest and most complex caves in the world.

Aside from stalactites and stalagmites, you will see some honeycomb-like formations called box work, cave popcorn (not to be eaten, of course), and other beautiful features in the cave.

Tours can take about 30 minutes to four hours, depending on the tour you select.

You can go on the easy walking tours or the strenuous ones that include some crawling through some of the low-ceiling parts of the cave.

Drive UTVs in Spearfish Canyon

We had an absolute riot driving a UTV off-road in Spearfish Canyon.

We picked up the UTV and map at Spearfish Canyon Lodge and headed out for a 4-hour adventure.

So much fun and a great new way, to us, to explore the outdoors.

Where to Stay

I’m going to recommend the haunted hotel in town that is also pretty swank.

The historic Alex Johnson is located right downtown within easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and public art.

That is just a sampling of everything there is to do in Rapid City and what we enjoyed on a recent visit.

A visit to a spa is almost always a must during a girlfriends trip and that is how I ended up at Elements of Touch Spa & Resort

(BIG thanks to them and Visit Estes Park for comping our visit–the universe knew I would seriously lose my mind if I didn’t decompress very soon).

How I ended up in Estes Park is a whole other story. A while back I spotted an article about a Tablescape Competition happening in Estes Park, CO.

I know that Tatanisha, my “always up for an adventure” travel partner, rocks at the tablescapes so I dropped the link her way with an off hand “we should consider flying in for this.”

That led to us watching for tickets to Denver (We flew Spirit Airline round trip for $50–yes, this trip was a while ago) and planning a quick girlfriend getaway.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT ELEMENTS OF TOUCH SPA

I have to say, a visit to Elements of Touch Spa & Resort is an absolute MUST. I debated over their various packages and finally settled on the Glacier Meltdown package that includes:

Elements collagen eye treatment

hydrating hair treatment revitalizing scalp massage

Full Body Massage ( approx. 90 min)

Seated Foot Soak and Scrub

Paraffin Hand Polish Dip and Wrap

Exfoliating Back Scrub

I spent two hours in complete BLISS. I may have walked in feeling like a train wreck, but after my treatments I left feeling more refreshed and relaxed then I had in months, maybe the entire year.

This list of Things to do in Roswell, NM comes from my love of all things paranormal and alien! I first went in search of aliens and ufos about five years ago. We were driving from California back to Michigan and I convinced Alan and Em that we should detour to Roswell.

I wanted to see what all the hype was about and if we might, by some random piece of luck, actually see something out of the ordinary. That visit was quick, we were there with just enough time to visit one of the alien attractions before they closed and then we were back on the road.

After my very brief introduction, I knew that Roswell would require me to spend more time discovering its hidden gems. I finally made it back this year and discovered so many reasons why you need to visit Roswell, NM.

Things to do in Roswell, NM

I don’t think people really expect to find anything beyond aliens & ufos in Roswell. That is what usually draws them to town, but it’s the hidden gems that will leave them surprised and wanting to spend more time exploring the area.

Even though this was another quick visit I found so many gems.

We took a full day to discover as much about the city as possible before we had to head back out.

I will find time to visit Roswell when I can stay at least four days and I’m sharing why I’m so focused on that goal.

ROSWELL ART SCENE

This is the absolute last place I thought I would stumble across art museums and galleries full of nationally recognized and up and coming artists.

The art scene in Roswell was one of the most surprising finds during my visit. Who knew, in the middle of nowhere, an oasis of incredible art would exist.

There is no need to fight the crowds or pay the prices of New York City, simply visit Roswell and immerse yourself in their art scene.

The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art offers up 22,000 square feet of exhibit space and regularly has more than 400 pieces of art on display.

Best known for their Artist-in-Residence Program works at the museum are across the spectrum from photographs to sculptures and everything in between.

The works displayed here are all created by previous Artist-in-Residence participants and I think you’ll be impressed by the museum-quality works of art on display. Free to visit.

During a visit, you absolutely must make time to stop at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. The museum is the cultural and educational hub of the community and is spread across 50,000 square feet that include twelve galleries of art and history exhibits, an education center and a planetarium.

Their permanent collection has over 11,000 works of art and historical materials.

These focus on the cultural change in the Southwest. You’ll find the largest and most significant public collection Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd.

An international print collection that dates from the 16th century to present and includes works by Salvador Dali, Eugene Delacroix, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Louise Nevelson, Pablo Picasso, Georges Roualt, and Fritz Scholder.

Contemporary artist, modernist works, local artist and world-recognized artist.

In addition to its amazing collection of art, the museum hosts a number of events throughout the year that is worth joining. Free to visit.

Reischman Park in the heart of downtown, tucked between a couple of buildings, is a hidden gem full of art and hosts a number of musical events.

It’s also a great place to rest and people watch a while and it’s free to visit.

While you are visiting Main Street stop in at Gallery Main Street Arts. This gallery showcases the work of local artists and covers a wide range of mediums.

Each month the Gallery hosts a guest artist whose work is featured with an opening reception and show.

HIDDEN GEMS IN ROSWELL

“Welcome to Roswell” signs have been designed by local artists and are installed near the city limits from each direction. We stopped at the sign on the north side of town.

I LOVE the cow being picked up by the alien. Each of the four signs are different and if you have the time it definitely worth stopping at each of them.

Leprino Foods, located outside of town, is the world’s largest mozzarella producer in the nation. They process 6 MILLION pounds of milk a day, about a 1/3 of the milk in New Mexico.

Their cheese is made especially for pizzeria and foodservice operators, frozen food manufacturers and private label cheese packages, but there is probably a good chance that if you order a pizza while in Roswell it will use cheese from Leprino.

Roswell Seed is the oldest, continuously family-owned business in New Mexico.

It opened in 1898 before New Mexico was even a state and has been passed down through the generations.

Located on Main Street Roswell Seed offers everything from bulk seeds for your farm to seeds for your personal garden.

They follow modern conservation practices that protect and cares for the land they use.

In addition to seeds, you can find all your modern equipment plus they sell plants, flowers, fertilizers and various greenhouses.

Basically, if you have a garden or farm you’ll want to visit Roswell Seed Company!

GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY IN ROSWELL

An eight-mile walking and biking path runs the full length of town along the river. The path passes through Loveless park, the zoo, golf course, tennis courts and under the railroad.

The perfect way to see Roswell at a slower pace.

Bottomless State Park is high on my list of places to visit. The park offers up incredible milky way photo opportunities as well as nine different hiking trails.

This is definitely one of the top things to do in Roswell, NM if you like the outdoors!

During April an May and in October the area is home to bird migrations. Birders will want to visit Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge for bird spotting.

Plus, in September they host a Dragonfly festival this will be worth checking out.

Get your adrenaline pumping by riding an ATV over 90+ foot sand dunes at Mescalero Sands North Dunes OHV area.

The dune field stretches over more than 610 acres and easily accommodates ATVs, sand rails, and dune buggies.

Other vehicles are advised to stay on the established roads and parking lot only.

If the weather outside is frightful by the end of 2018 you may be able to take advantage of the new aquatic center that is being built. It’s a $20 million investment that will hopefully have some public swim hours.

HAUNTED ROSWELL

Here’s a little tidbit for my friends that are interested in the haunted side of things.

During my research, I learned about old military silos that are said to have some paranormal activity.

Sadly, most of these silos are on private land and you can be arrested for trespassing, but it might be worth a drive by to see if anything “interesting” happens.

ALIENS & UFOs IN ROSWELL

This is what has put and kept Roswell on the map. It’s a part of their history that they can’t seem to escape even if they wanted to.

READ: Searching for UFOs in Roswell

Aliens and UFOs are responsible for one of the largest festivals in the state drawing in thousands of visitors.

Streets are blocked off and everything alien/ufo comes out to play.

In fact, Josh Gates just happened to be in town for the 2017 UFO Festival so you really never know who or what you’ll see.

The UFO Festival takes places at the end of June and if you think you might want to go I HIGHLY recommend booking your hotel room now.

The International UFO Museum and Research Center is the largest of it’s kind in the world.

Read the history of Roswell and other incidents, look and photos and immerse yourself in the otherworldly.

This is the place to go if you’ve ever wondered what really happened or perhaps to even answer the question “Are we alone out here?”

That is something that you’ll have to answer for yourself but the museum can definitely help you draw some conclusions.

The museum is currently pretty basic with a few exceptions BUT they have just started a long-term plan to revamp and reconfigure the entire experience to make it more interactive.

I, for one, can’t wait to visit the museum when they are done.

Alien Zone and Area 51 is the place to go for great selfie and photo ops. All the displays, about 20 scenes, are handmade by locals and encourage you to sit, touch, play and take photos.

This is definitely a very kitschy stop on your visit to Roswell.

If you like a bit of the weird, odd or bizarre you’ll definitely want to step inside the Roswell SpaceWalk. “Step into the temporal vortex field of the Paisley-Horvak TVG9000.

See into Roswell’s past. when the future was beginning; then watch the future unfold, becoming a spectacular panorama of outer space viewed from the deck of an alien starship.”

It’s, um, an interesting experience and, honestly, since you’re in Roswell you may as well adopt the “why not” attitude and enjoy all the town has to offer.

Roswell UFO Tours: I wasn’t able to make this tour happen during my visit but I’m very interested in setting this up next time I’m in town.

This is a private tour led by top UFO Researcher, Dennis Balthaser. Mr. Balthaser will take you to over 20 locations around Roswell where you can search out and find your truth about what really happened in Roswell in 1947.

Big D’s Downtown Dive for delicious sandwiches, perfect for lunch.

Two local foods that you’ll want to take home if they are in season are pecans and red or green chilis.

Roswell is well known for all three and you’d be remiss not to take a taste of Roswell back home.

HOW TO GET TO ROSWELL, NM

Of course, you can fly into the local airport and if you are short on time that is probably the best route. There are a number of airlines that service the region.

However, where is the fun in that?

If you have the time a road trip will make you appreciate Roswell a whole lot more.

The town is located pretty much on the way to nowhere.

Getting there by car requires miles and endless miles of a stark, flat desert landscape that leaves you wondering if you’re ever going to get where you’re going or if you’ve passed through a veil and are now in the upside down.

However, the road trip journey is part of the discovery and one that shouldn’t be missed, in my opinion.

There is a certain beauty to the desert landscape, it awakens your senses and makes you see beyond the endless browns and tans.

By the time you arrive in Roswell you are thrilled to be back in civilization, but it also has you looking to the horizon wondering what lays beyond.

WHERE TO STAY IN ROSWELL, NM

We stayed at the Candlewood Suites just north of downtown. I appreciated the kitchenette and the beds were comfy. Location is perfect and is near all your typical brick and mortar retail stores.

All the major hotel brands are represented in town so if you have a preference of one over the other they are most likely there.

WHAT TO SEE BEYOND ROSWELL

If you have a few extra days be sure to check out these, sorta, nearby recommendations.

Find good eats in Albuquerque (200 miles)

Enjoy a getaway to nearby El Paso, Texas (200 miles) Yes, I think it’s worth the drive 😉

LINCOLN (57 miles): Ran by park service, looks like a town complete with the visitors center and general store, still a bullet in the wall that was shot at Billy the Kid.

RUIDOSO (75 miles): Located in the Sierra Blanca mountain range this is a nod to Aspen or the like. It has that ski-town feel and is very fun and welcoming. Definitely worth a visit. You absolutely MUST stop at Sacred Grounds Coffee, this was, by far, our favorite coffee stop during our entire trip.

ALTO (80 miles): Spencer Theater/white modern theater on top of a mesa, filled with Chihuly Glass. Free Tours.

CARLSBAD CAVERNS (96 miles): Hidden beneath the surface are more than 119 caves of all sizes. This is also the summer home of a massive bat population and people travel from all over the world to experience the bat flight as 1,000s of bats exit the cave for their nightly hunt.

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT (133 miles): All the info you need about planning a trip to White Sands can be found here. What I will say is that you definitely need to bring or rent a sled and enjoy time sliding down the small dunes. So. much. fun.
