I don’t talk about Dylan much here, but he works as a cook at a cafe. He makes excellent food and bakes up scones 3-4 times a week. Of course, I thought his visit would be the perfect opportunity for him to show me how to make scones. Scones really aren’t that difficult to make and only require a few basic ingredients and then whatever special ingredient you would like for the flavor. Of course, you can never go wrong baking with chocolate and baking with M&M’s® is even better.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to the fact that my babies are all grown up. I’m not sure how it happened so quickly, but before I knew it Dylan was graduated from high school and living on his own hours from home and Em was a high school senior. Time sure does fly by when you are having fun.

Luckily, Dylan was able to come home for Thanksgiving this year. Normally, we would have spent the holiday with Alan’s family or my family, but this year, for the first time ever, we spent the holiday at home with just the four of us. It. Was. Fantastic. I have a feeling getting together for all the holidays will soon be coming to an end.  That doesn’t mean that fun get-togethers will stop. I’m sure they will happen at other times of the year. The day doesn’t matter as long as we’re together and we are baking up something delicious.

When I was grocery shopping the other day I couldn’t resist buying some plain and peanut M&M’s®. I knew Dylan would be home for the holiday and together we could think of a tasty treat to make with them. I picked up both plain and peanut so we could have options when we brainstormed about what baked goods to make.

Grate frozen butter into the dry ingredients and mix.

Add M&M’s to mixture.

Ohhhh…isn’t that pretty. I love all the colors.

Add the buttermilk and mix well. If the dough is too dry add a tablespoon of buttermilk.

#bakingideas #shop

This is how the dough should look. A bit crumbly, but sticks together when squeezed.

Mix the dough until all the ingredients are incorporated. Split dough in half. Roll each half into a ball.

Place the ball on a floured surface and flatten into a one inch thick circle. It will be approximately 7 inches across.

Cut the circle into 8 wedges.

Place wedges on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 16-18 minutes. Halfway through the cookie time rotate the cookie sheet.  Let scones cool completely. Drizzle with icing, if desired.
